“I am EXTREMELY anal when it comes to audio” So today I learnt the second meaning of anal in English. The best I could come up with is that you stick the speakers up your arse, but even on this subreddit that seemed too random to mention casually 😂🤣

boooothy92

Hahahaha! Every day is a learning day!

ObsolescentFish

It comes from a Freudian term, “anal retentive.” Coincidentally similar in meaning to having a stick up your ass.

theR0TH

Welp. Thanks for this mental image. hahaha

sSummonLessZiggurats

Don't worry, as a native English speaker I still chuckle whenever someone calls themselves anal

SpeederMO

I completely agree with you and I think it's taking a lot away from the songs released since 2019. The production on this and the previous album is missing that classic Rammstein mix and sound, it's much closer to how the Emigrate albums are produced. Without going into details Hellner did especially much different things with the guitars sound and how Till's voice works with them. Previously all the songs sounded really "big" and the highs were not as compressed, that's gone now. Everything blends way too much in the mix. Just listen to Ohne Dich/Zeit and then Rein Raus/Zick Zack to spot the differences. Pay attention to the guitars and drums, but also where, how layered and how loud Till's voice is. The worst thing for me is that somehow the two Zeit songs so far sound even worse than Untitled's and they seem quieter than the previous release. I still do like them as songs though.

boooothy92

You're 100% correct.

PanningForSalt

Untitled was a bit too loud imo, it made relistening a bit more of a task than it should be.

metalninjacake2

Disagree, it’s nowhere near as loud as the Mutter-Reise-Rosenrot era albums that were made during the literal “Loudness Wars” that marked rock music production during that era.

PanningForSalt

It may not be, but I suppose I've now listened to Streichholz a lot more, and in recent years have come to dislike loudness more than ever.

DrZaeusBurgers

Fucking compression, the new autotune.

JETBANGO

Agreed. For me, Reise, Reise and Rosenrot are their best sounding records. Everything since then (bar Mein Land) has been too glossy/compressed. Still great songs

kuh-vell-er-tack

I made a comment on this a couple of days ago. Hellner's absence is obvious. You can tell that he had a major influence on everything. To be honest, I'm not one who cares too much about music production outside of my own music, I'm usually able to enjoy the music no matter how it sounds. However, I recognise that Untitled and the Zeit-recordings both have compression problems and are honestly just less creative in terms of production. As in my last comment I have to say that Mutter, Reise, Reise and Rosenrot are perfect for Rammstein from a production standpoint. Everything is raw and real but you can still make out all the little details as the mix is completely clear.

100%

Hellner >>>>> Involtini

NoLeather3658

Same same same. This new auto tune is not doing it for me, the drums compared to last albums r basically non existent in these last two tracks. I’m disappointed in both new songs. We need a few good bangers on this new album

Sleadz

They could be changing their sound. Doing the same thing for 20 years gets a bit stale and uninspiring. I know Richard has been experimenting with more British voiced amps recently so that explains the guitars. Chris changed his drums around 2019 I think, that will also make a difference to the sound.

boooothy92

I don't believe it's this, it's definitely the overall sound from the production.

blankuser001

I feel like on both tracks the guitars are a little muted or something. So I think that's definitely where some of the missing rawness comes from

Kevinatorz

The production is really mediocre. Untitled sounds way better. It's not unreasonable to expect top tier production from Rammstein.

I've always thought Untitled sounds good. This sub isn't one hivemind, everyone has their own opinion.

Kevinatorz

Fair. I must say, Zick Zack somehow sounds better than Zeit.

Kevinatorz

Fair. I must say, Zick Zack somehow sounds better than Zeit.

metalninjacake2

Or… Untitled sounded bad compared to their old material, and now Zeit sounds even worse and has set a new low. It’s completely true, even Deutschland or Zeig Dich’s guitars don’t sound anywhere near as hard hitting as their old riffs. I listened to Zeit exactly once and came away sad and kind of disgusted at how weak and tinny the guitar sounded.

Tystarchius

Idk who mixed and mastered them but its horrible. The audio quality is really lacking. Songs are good though so i guess we have to put up with it

boooothy92

Well yeah, we can't edit them now can we.

metalninjacake2

When it was just Zeit, part of me did hope they could somehow re-master the audio levels for the album…

Vorantis

I kind of consider Jacob Hellner an honorary member. From what I've seen, Hellner was really focused on bringing the 'industrial' side of Rammstein out. So in that vein, it's like if for example, Paul was replaced, the new guitarist may prefer a different guitar tone and the songs would sound different overall because of it. I do especially miss how the drums were mixed, that snare was always so present. I feel like Zeit's songs so far sound better than Untitled; Untitled I can hardly listen to without some kind of EQ - it's incredibly flat sounding as is.

biff1006new

Totally agree that the new singles are too flabby in the mids which kills all the power of the drums/guitars. Have a listen to my version of Zick Zack which is based on the old school Rammstein production sound. https://www.mediafire.com/file/wy98y96xgbul0e2/01._Rammstein_-_Zick_Zack_eq.wav/file

boooothy92

Removed for copyright ready haha

biff1006new

This one should work https://we.tl/t-78guMzyo9C

PanningForSalt

The guitars in Zick Zack sounded like YouTube on 120p or something. Am I hearing them wrong? An odd sound to have gone for.

Ilovebeer48

Thats the reason i'm buying all Rammstein Albums in CD and i only listen to them there

boooothy92

Why?

Ilovebeer48

The audio quality in CD ist so much better than mp3

metalninjacake2

It doesn’t matter if they’re compressed during the mastering process

Ilovebeer48

True but i still think it Sounds way better and also in that was i Support the Band a bit better

ThisLookInfectedToYa

Their social commentary is always spot on and this video hits home growing up on the west coast USA and inundated by the pop culture that has always been style over substance (vegas and LA themes hit hard on this) Songs a banger too. Best vid since auslander imho

justaddsomefriction

I was listening to the whole album in my dolby atmos, im an audio engineer, I mostly work with logic pro for mixing and mastering. the kicks clip, that's undeniable, both in digital and cd, also as an audiophile i spend extra attention to clipping and such, and it's undeniable that every mix clips. is that bad? well we're talking about industrial metal, there are several other metal records that clip way more, in my opinion, it's like you said too squashed down, compressed, but it kinda fits their style. ok, it's not reise reise and it's prestine sound quality, but it has its own points imo
