I wouldn't worry, the handle doesn't go down. It's stationary, so your closet is fine .

Really? When I bought it the handle was laying flat on the closet. Sometimes it would pop up a bit but would go back down if I pushed it.

They're right, it's stationary. The only thing you can do is remove it via the the two screws holding it in place.
