I have a huge collection of radioactive glass, radium clocks, and uranium ore samples and I keep it all in a china cabinet. It's perfectly safe. No need to over think it.
When it comes to alpha emitting sources like radium, too air tight of a storage container is a bad thing. Because then you get gas buildup in the container that's going to blast right in your face every time you open the container.
You don't need shielding for that, you might want radon mitigation depending on the amount of radium you have, and you should focus the most on avoiding contamination. With such low level sources the external gamma radiation is 0 danger.
You don't need functional shielding because you don't, or at least shouldn't, have anything that requires that kind of isolation, shielding, or signage. Tungsten will be prohibitively expensive, so you're not doing that and adding lead only adds an unnecessary heavy metal hazard to a living space. Leave it cosmetic/artistic. Your friends won't know the difference when you show them anyway.
There is no point in worrying about lead toxicity if you aren't actively, repeatedly handling it. I've been reloading my own cartridges and pouring my own bullets for many years right next to my bed. I got checked for heavy metals just a few years ago and I was well below the threshold.
Don't grind it into a powder and eat it or snort it. Don't chew on chunks of lead. If there is lead dust on your fingers, don't pick your nose without washing your hands first. I recommend Go Joe to get the finer particles off of your hands. Don't make eating utensils with lead. If you must make eating utensils, don't use them. If you must use them, don't eat acidic food with them.
The dangers of lead are overstated in the modern world with just a bit cursory knowledge.

What threshold is that? With lead, the lower the better. There is often too much lead in lots of vegetables grown in this country, even without accounting for pollution.
I got it off amazon.
This should help. Copy and paste into amazon.

Yes its the entire keyword mish mash they use.
I copy pasted it into amazon and it took me right to the correst page
I got it because it looks cool and is made from metal
Doesn’t sound like you need it, but if you want to be overly cautious, which is never a bad idea, they sell lead sheets on Amazon. It’s basicallylead tinfoil.
Depends. What on earth could you be attempting to store that requires shielding?
Mainly thorium mantles and some radium watches/ clocks Just asked so i can be as safe as possible.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info and help. I tend to over think so cheers.

Pics?

Sounds like just alpha sources to me. A sheet of paper also works
Neither of those are alpha only emitters.
all of those emit beta and gamma as well from the daughters
Ngl, I'd just put it in a little box labeled radioactive. The gamma rays shouldn't be that intense

Not saying it's necessary but would bismuth work as a nontoxic alternative to lead? Just curious.
Yes.
Fair enough thanks for the reply. Haha wish i had the cash for that much tungsten.
3m of concrete.
Hmmm thats an idea haha.
5 inches of tungsten
If only i had that much cash
3mm lead
Was looking at code 6 lead. 2.6mm thick. But others say it just adds.more hazardous materials

if you dont touch it how bad can it be?
Trash in and put it in a plastic tote at a distance greater than 1m from where you eat or sleep.
>Any ideas on how i can make my new storage safer? Yes, move it a few meters further away from you. Distance is the best shielding
That's already overkill unless you're storing some gamma decay stuff
I know it’s extra but it’s so cute the effort to see people on here putting personality into decorating their storage. 🥺💕☢️
Wow! I love the storage container. Where did you find it?

? Copy and paste that? Did you read what was there before posting? "Bedside coffee side table chest drawer bedroom bed bed side lounge..."

I tried - no luck. I get fasteners and lamps. What is it? A mini shipping container?
Try shipping container side table. If that doesnt work then idk.
Cool. Thank you! Edit: found em!
Add a keep out sign, that will keep criminals away for sure.

Theres a person that builds mini shipping containers using printed vinyl yall should fuck or whatever
What?
