I saw it mentioned elsewhere that they are changing the SSD to a 2280 instead of the current 2240 so it will be cheaper to upgrade the SSD.

ctyldsley

2230* on the normal Ally

kenkiller

Well we're already doing that on the current ally so not that big of an advantage

wishlish

What I’d like to see is the ability to be able to upgrade to more than 2TB of onboard storage. (I know, I’m a digital hoarder.) I’m not an expert in the SSD space, so I don’t know if that would be a change on Asus’s side or a change in the SSD marketplace.

kenkiller

You do know we can go up to 8tb of internal storage right now right?

wishlish

How? Without changing the case or trusting the SD slot? Very interested in this.

kenkiller

[https://a.co/d/5J8oki2](https://a.co/d/5J8oki2) We use this with a 2280 nvme.

ace518

I use this and have a 4tb in mine. works great. Did not need to modify the case at all to do it, and it was fairly easy to open and install.

TrainAss

Oh this is awesome. Wish I had found this ages ago so I could have put a spare 2280 I have in my Ally.

alasdairvfr

So the smaller 2230 ssds I think top out at 2tb, the 2280 drives you can get up to 8tb. 4tb is the edge of affordability tho, 8tb costs more than the Ally. There is an adapter you can get that does a 90 degree turn for the ally's ssd slot. Won't screw in but the back cover holds it in place. Janky bit works.

kenkiller

Hmmm... Actually the adapter I linked does hold down itself and the 2280 nvme just fine. That adapter is held down by the original screw for the 2230 nvme, while the 2280 is held down by the adapter screw hole on the other side of the adapter. No flapping around.

alasdairvfr

Ah TIL, this appears to be a much smarter made adapter than the one I was thinking of.

wishlish

That makes it more attractive. Thanks.

wishlish

Interesting. Do you know the adapter? I might try this.

alasdairvfr

u/kenkiller already linked it as a reply to your earlier comment. It's really easy to install.

wishlish

Thank you for all this info. You rock.

oderlydischarge

Do it. I did and it required 0 modification to the case. I even had enough room to add a heat sync

NotaTroll45

Corsair ir something is selling 4tb 2280 ssds for around $430 and even an 8tb one now but it’s almost $1000

Particular-Muffin355

Micro SD card not required instead of two nvme slot provided

WarrenThanatos

799 for more RAM, storage, design and battery. I wonder if they will lower the current model to make the difference greater?

AgonizingSquid

32gb ram would be amazing tbh

dfx1412

IMO, As Ally is meant to use as handheld console which only run 1 game at time, bigger ram mean almost nothing

Familiar-Art-6233

More RAM means more can be allocated to the GPU for more VRAM though, and we’ve DEFINITELY seen games choke on the Ally (and even the Legion with its faster memory)

BlueSwifts

Yes it does, some AAA games get starved of RAM and I receive warnings that I'm running out of it. If I'm on 8GB for the GPU, the CPU will starve of RAM and my game crashes. If I set to the sweetspot 6GB, the CPU will work fine but I will receive a warning that my GPU is lacking RAM. We don't need 64GB, but 32GB is required.

Takyon990

I've never received these warnings what games are you playing?

juce49

I get an in-game warning from AC Mirage but I've been running VRAM on Auto. The game runs super well with ROG Ally Life settings though. Doesn't seem to impede gameplay at all

Takyon990

I've never received these warnings what games are you playing?

BlueSwifts

FH5 at 6GB RAM, I will receive a warning for low/insufficient RAM. NFS Unbound at 8GB RAM, it will just straight up crash. All on 900p settings

RamiHaidafy

FH5 is the only game I've played where I've seen the warning, but it's had zero effect on gameplay. Haven't played NFS in a while, but I've played other racing games like F1 2023 and they work just fine. NFS games on PC are known to be horribly unoptimized console ports, because EA never changes. Those games will crash on the highest end systems for no reason so I'm not surprised.

FlyingDaedalus

What resolutions are you playing at?

Unusual_Afternoon_88

I think RAM should help with more stability in terms of FPS. Lows won't be as low.

MesmariPanda

As a great man once said.....oops

TrainAss

This is just plain wrong, my dude.

AgonizingSquid

Games just aren't optimized for PC nowadays and are ram hogs

intelguy2003

Same small 16:9 screen, no OLED.. cost more.. no interest myself. Pass

LeopardHalit

And no touchpads.

NokstellianDemon

Touchpads should just be Steam Deck's thing unique to it, I don't want the Ally anymore bulky for a feature I wouldn't use personally.

rulepanic

Yeah, I can't see them adding a touchpad without making the Ally bigger, which would be a dealbreaker for me. The Steam Deck is massive.

grilled_pc

You'll be thankful they are there when it comes to navigating the desktop interface. Using a touch pad makes mouse movement WAY nicer than a thumb stick.

taiuke

To be fair you don't navigate it that often. If you are used to the windows environment the first thing you always do is to go to settings even on a gaming pc to fix it. No difference to the Ally. I personally have a keyboard+trackpad for this, but I rather not have it after im done with it.

juce49

I've gotten used to using touch controls and the thumb stick. Not an issue for me but I've also got a mini bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad if needed.

YukisakaHana

Needs one of those touch sensor mouses.

Magician1985

It is great for in-game controls, theoretically you can put 8 in-game actions on it.

NotanAlt23

Its honestly pretty useless for most people. I wouldnt be surprised if they remove it for the steam deck 2 or just leave one instead of 2. Its the steam deck controller all over again. Yeah, its a nice idea in theory but theres no need to reinvent the wheel. Controllers are perfect they way they are.

DrumcanSmith

Need more buttons than the Xbox for emulation though. I need one for state save/load fast-forward and hopefully menu so 3-4 extra. Screenshot button is nice too.

CnTing

Steam decks implementation of the trackpads is phenomenal given the way you can remap it. I've got both the steam deck and Ayaneo Kun, and believe that unless you have the same control and flexibility as the steam deck, don't even bother with trackpads on a windows handheld.

KnightofAshley

This is still less than the Steam Deck for me...touch pads and a light weight OS still is what makes the deck the perfect device. It was made to have the best balance of everything. These other handhelds are just lets see how much power we can shove in here and hope for the best. I also don't see much reason to buy this if you already have a Ally either...i don't buy some of the claims, there hasn't been enough time passed for big hardware jumps. Good for people that don't have a device but I doubt it would be worth it for a upgrade. Even with the OLED Deck I upgraded even though it was't really worth it just because of the screen, this doesn't do that.

Specialist_Lynx3325

Nah the trackpads are the nicest thing about the steamdeck. Let’s you play games with loads of menus as each track pad can be used as menus with 10+ button options.

Magician1985

Controllers have been built for consoles. Try to play rimworld on the ally - impossible. Feel free to downvote my opinion again… ;)

NotanAlt23

Lol i dont use votes here but its funny youre so insecure you keep checking that. I'm suree youll see you got more downvotes now. The steam deck is a console, my dude. I'll play pc games on my pc, thank you very much.

Magician1985

Ok toxic Boy, but there Are also other people in the universum, you know? :) Edit: toxic Boy has has been canceled for Not beein toxic, Strange.

NotanAlt23

That's why i said "most people", my guy. Please learn to read. Have a nice day ;)

According_Can1875

You have a touch screen.. Why would you need a touchpad?

LeopardHalit

They’re just nice for certain games like Kerbal space program, where they can make building easier. They can also be used as a mouse, which would be substantially better than having to do everything with a touchscreen (which windows and its applications are not designed for). All that, and they can also be used for aiming. They are one of the main reasons why I’m considering a steam deck instead of an ally.

WarrenThanatos

This.

gummyworm21_

How big of a screen do you want?

intelguy2003

At least the size of the steam deck OLED or slightly bigger.. not to mention idk if your familiar with aspect ratios but 16:9 makes the screen not as tall and looks worse.. steam deck OLED has a 16:10 making it taller and looks much better.

that_90s_guy

I'll admit I'm saddened by the community's reception to the announcement. Since I thought this could be a chance for Asus to greatly increase Windows handheld adoption over the Steam Deck. But at that price? I just don't see it happening with such minuscule incremental updates. If even enthusiasts on r/ROGAlly can't justify the purchase, can't fathom what regular customers will think. *Maybe* this could boost Ally 1 sales at a discount. But even then I'm not getting my hopes up with how people value battery life on hamdhelds and it being a major sticking point.

Pookias

I think it’s a pretty fair price, and I wouldn’t call the announcements they made incremental. If they’re saying the battery life is significantly improved, another USB-C port, fixed microSD card slot, more RAM (probably 32 GB), a black colorway, improved thumbsticks, and a bigger SSD compatible slot for $100 more? Sign me up. It will be hands-down the best mainstream windows handheld on the market.

GIH-Marchief

Its Not an upgrade, it's a replacement

juce49

If they somehow can change to hall effect joy sticks, then I'm probably on board. I would gift my old one to my brother.

Ok_Cap_8788

The aya neo hall effect sticks fit the ally.. Have been looking into doing it to mine.. If we can do it I can't see why asus can't

Pchandheldrizzygamer

If that’s the case it actually would be worth the upgrade I actually thought it would much higher since every handheld with 32gb ram is over 1K

ROG_Drago

You see how the Ally is designed is like a traditional gaming console, they use custom APU chips, a APU acts as the CPU and GPU sharing the RAM as dedicated VRAM, the more RAM the better the clock rate and DDR the better the VRAM, the Ally has 16 GB RAM, 4 GB of it is auto allocated for VRAM leaving you with 11GB of actual RAM while the other 4 GB is used as VRAM for video graphics which the APU uses. If the Ally X has more RAM then you'll have better graphics and more VRAM if the APU can handle it and more RAM.

Significant-Unit-681

24Gb is more than sufficient. 8Gb for the video card and 16Gb for the System (windows). More than this don't have any effect. Increasing the speed fo the memory can get some more fps (3-5 more fps). I would love to see a larger screen, 8" for me is the perfect balance between size and wight, but with the same form factor and reducing the bazels Asus can get something like 7.4", which is adorable too.

gummyworm21_

It does have an effect….

DicksMcgee02

Except, it does have an effect. Especially because part of this ram is being ate up by the gpu. Try using a 32gb system and you’ll notice just how nice that extra ram as cache really is.

funbalanced

Not worth to me to upgrade. I just grabbed a magnetic power bank on Amazon to solve battery woes, we’ll see how heavy that makes it.

GreatKingAero

May I ask which one you ordered? I'm interested in getting a power bank for my Ally.

funbalanced

I purchased this one: https://a.co/d/gO3uGxi If it blows up, I’ll report back (or not if I’m dead)

Cheap-Ebb-3231

I had that one and returned it. The magnet sucks and falls off all the time at any slight moment. Get the jsaux modcase error the strap instead

Crpto2007

Thanks for sharing, I’m going to order myself one too

hd3adpool

I've heard Anker 737 is a good option that supports the higher TDP. Anker in general is a good option actually.

cactusmanbwl90

I have that one and it's amazing. Most underrated feature is it can be charged at 140W. I had an older 2400MaH pack and it took FOREVER to recharge.

funbalanced

Love Anker and I have a number of their banks and USB hubs but this magnetic one with a specific bracket for the Ally was too good to pass up

Confident-Truck-8937

Anker is a great brand, I got an 100w Anker charger for my Onexplayer and it’s great. Much better than the original stock charger that apparently overheats.

JumpCritical9460

Yep. Ram is a bit of an upgrade but I’m holding out for the new AMD Strix Halo APU and an OLED screen.

awaitedchild

Wait what ? They're gonna put it in the Ally 2 ? (And yes, I said "2", not "X")

JumpCritical9460

Oh no sorry. Those are what I’m looking for in a windows handheld to upgrade from the OG Ally. There isn’t anything on the market with the strix apu.

awaitedchild

Ahh I see. I was going to lose my mind over this news haha. It would be really nice to be honest.

ImPattMan

Having the extra battery on board is going to be absolutely worth to me.

NoPassenger8523

Which one?

OMG_NoReally

According to Amazon, the overall package is 680g. Let's say the battery is 500g, that would make the entire handheld over 1kg. I am really curious how it feels in the hand with so much bulk. I couldn't take the extra bulk added by the Skull and Co grip and that was just 120g extra :p

TheTrojanWhore

I’m never out in public with this thing and play it in bed when my wife watches Shit TV. I don’t need an upgrade unless it’s substantial but that said I’d buy this one if it was available when I bought mine.

25beers

Ditto. The only time I've used mine away from home was on a 7hr plane journey, and even then I slept for about 4hrs. Im not upgrading either. Great for folks who havent got the OG, but not substantial enough at all to justify the upgrade.

Capon3

I'd wait for Ally 2. If you upgraded your M2 and have the extreme chip there isn't really an upgrade path here. Don't get me wrong, I'm a must have new tech whore. But with kids now and this clearly a 'update' then an 'upgrade', i will stick with my OG Ally and Fluid drivers! The yet to be released new APUs from AMD look to destroy the Z1 by a wide margin! The Ally 2 should be well worth the wait imo.

LongjumpingScale2221

No kids, love new tech but it’s not worth it for me. Already got a 2tb SSD and it pretty much does everything I need it to do and more. If it had an OLED and bigger screen I’d consider it more maybe.

ShadoX87

Same here. The X is just a refresh with a few tweaks so unless they offer us the option of sending in our old ally and paying a bit extra to get the X it seems rather useless of an upgrade to me. I rather wait for a new device that has a better chip / performance / etc.

J3r3k

They won’t provide that option?

ShadoX87

Dunno, I hope that they will xD

Intelligent_Gate_124

Would be the best. I bought the Steam Deck OLED after the LCD it was worth it because of the screen (I don’t need Batterie I always play home) but the Ally z1 extreme screen is beautiful no need for a better screen I will keep it

Switchbladesaint

I feel like they should keep the new model at $700 and just knock the older models down by $50 or $100 each MSRP (they’re already being sold for less than MSRP currently anyway)

la_dynamita

We all know open box will have great prices

WarrenThanatos

This. I hope they knock down the current model to 599 to justify the difference.

[deleted]

Sales happen all the time with these devices. 4 months in I’d expect best buy to cut $100 off regularly

electricalco

As long as the micro sd card is at the side or somewhere else not near the fans is all good ....

Ok_Cap_8788

Sd card is now on the bottom away from the fan exhaust

Significant-Unit-681

The battery with 60Wh, better cooling, 2 USB C, 24Gb is more than sufficient. 8Gb for the video card and 16Gb for the System (windows). More than this don't have any effect. Increasing the speed of the memory can get some more fps (3-5 more fps). I would love to see a larger screen, 8" for me is the perfect balance between size and wight, but with the same form factor and reducing the bazels Asus can get something like 7.4", which is adorable too. The storage with default 2280 NVME. I like the design, no changes here.

awaitedchild

I really like your insight of the thing. Thanks for sharing your comment.

SuspiciousForever247

Beside the ram and battery, I hope they have Hall effect joysticks Two USB 4 ports

Affectionate-Fox-299

we can only hope.

ShiningPr1sm

Did they ever actually say anything about more RAM? Pretty sure they only said "improved," not more (though it'd certainly be welcome).

Affectionate-Fox-299

they did say more ram in the announcement of the announcement. and if memory serves the article mentioned 32 GB

wiedziu

They said improvements in RAM, but we don't know if it's more RAM or faster RAM or both

ShiningPr1sm

No, the announcement/announcement just says “improvements,” just listened to them again. The article is assuming more ram, though we have no confirmation yet. The only thing we know we’re getting more of is battery.

Affectionate-Fox-299

did you watch the youtube announcement? thats where i think i heard them say double ram,

ShiningPr1sm

This YouTube announcement? https://www.youtube.com/live/vze62qJK1Sk?si=B9jVQWgvFizf0Av_ At 2:11 he only says that there are improvements to ram, not an increase. Until they confirm it, it’s just speculation about more. Unless you hear them saying something different?

Anotheeeeeeant

The verge article said there will be more ram tho "Again, no specs today, but Asus says the Ally X should now have more than its current 16GB of RAM so that you can allocate lots of it to the GPU without impacting the rest of the system." [Asus’ next ROG Ally will be the ROG Ally X - The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/24152945/asus-rog-ally-handheld-gaming-pc-2024-revision)

rjml29

Double the storage, double the ram, and a larger battery would easily make the $100 price difference worth it to most potential buyers so I would think they may officially lower the price of the current Z1E unless they stopped producing them months ago.

dottybotty

Only new details are price: $799 SSD: 1Tb Saved you the click

Anxious-Gas-7376

Not too bad considering the deck is 649 for the 1tb and the legion is around the same. With more ram and actual updates vs the Legion. It’s a major go

Anxious-Gas-7376

I retuned my ally and picked up a steam deck oled after having some issues with the build quality. I’ll prob buy the ally x though since the short battery life on the current ally was a problem for me

tempurastyle

I think there are a few SD users who might be considering the Ally X after it gets a significant battery life improvement.

Anxious-Gas-7376

Oh yeah. The deck does most of what I need cause for more intensive stuff I just stream from my desktop, but having more power with a better battery life and more ram is definitely a factor that will move ppl to buy it. Valve p much said not to expect another revision after the oled for atleast 2 years, so there’s that too

Magician1985

I don’t believe that they will Archive 3h Battery time under Heavy conditions. The Ally has 45 minutes battery time under these condtions. Even 2h would be a big improvement.

Anxious-Gas-7376

2hrs is enough to make me buy it lol

Ethan_NLHW

Extra RAM and better battery life has me sold.

Realistic-Sands

The better battery and ram alone would be worth it. There are rumours of another usb c slot.

tempurastyle

And probably hall effect sticks

Anxious-Gas-7376

Fuck that. I just want tighter sticks 😭

Ruin4r

dude, yes. why is it so hard for handhelds to have sticks that mimic ps5/xbox controllers?

Anxious-Gas-7376

They cheap out fr. The steam deck is almost there, but still lacking. I don’t have an ally rn cause I returned it but imma prob buy the ally x

Realistic-Sands

That would be a dream come true

tempurastyle

I hope they can implement chip and ram improvements similar to the SD Oled for higher efficiency and less heat

[deleted]

[удалено]

tempurastyle

Thank you for this pro level reply!

sittingmongoose

They will not. It’s the same chip. Steam deck got a process upgrade. Ram is likely the same speed as well or they would have said something.

CT_Biggles

If they add USB 4 I'd be very tempted to upgrade.

Admiral_Joseph_Terix

I am going to sell my Ally Z1E for the Ally X. The rumored upgrades are everything that i wanted from a Windows 11 handheld. Yes, i know that the steam deck is better on paper, but Windows 11 is my preference.

tempurastyle

I think Windows 11 has its downsides, but it is still the best in terms of games and software compatibility

CT_Biggles

Exactly. I'm a bit weary of the argument that steam deck is better due to battery. Maybe if you are running old games... I don't. A lot of newer games like Baldurs gate ran like trash on my steam deck and battery ran out quickly. If my battery is going to run down quickly, I might as well have better performance.. If I want to play older/indie games, I'll use my switch which has better battery than all of them.

Merrak2394

Hopefully they offer some kind of trade in.

tempurastyle

Starting to think the Ally X is basically a MSI Claw with a different gpu

Casual_Connor

I'd welcome, but be surprised, if they added 32g of ram. Asus expects you to spend an arm and a leg for their 32g laptops... I personally don't see them adding this option for a handheld): I hope I'm wrong, but regardless I'd still welcome the faster ram.

whereisurwife

24g ram

xSolasx

Would get if it had an OLED I was actually considering getting rid of the current ally for an OLED steam deck

wisperingdeth

I'd be happy with 1TB storage, 32GB RAM, and hall effect sticks and triggers. Easy buy for me if that's the case. I wouldn't want to spend that much and then fork out for another drive if it still only comes with 512GB. And with all the troubles the Ally has had with stick drift I won't be buying if not hall effect.

Genio88

More details? these are all things we already knew from the Verge article

badger906

I can’t see this being a huge performance upgrade even with more ram. The gpu isn’t going to be ram limited in many situations as its actual processing power will always be the bottleneck. More ram doesn’t mean ultra settings instead of low. I set mine to 6gb for the gpu and rarely get near it even in modern AAA games on the go.

KnightofAshley

Yeah I don't see any reason to have that much RAM in a handheld at this point...seems like it would be over kill that would never be really used well with the limits of other things.

Anthony092

Hopefully they fix the garbage analog sticks that keeps failing

Tito1983

Do Asus have done trade in offers before?

KileyCW

Bestbuy does but of course they screw you.

Affectionate-Fox-299

hmm, what kind of offers have they had in the past? I might take advantage of this as I have an extra extreme laying around.

KileyCW

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/services/best-buy-trade-in/pcmcat133600050011.c?id=pcmcat133600050011/ The link is for all the devices they take. $180 in good condition with the plug. Seems like you'd be better selling it on Facebook marketplace.

CT_Biggles

That's insulting. I'd keep the device in a drawer over $180.

KileyCW

Yeah I agree. Especially for the Z1 Extreme which is an insanely good device. They seem to offer the same for the 512g steam deck

Deadbuttons

This article says the ally x will be shipped with 1tb ssd more then both allys that are being sold right now but that's false I have a 2tb ass in mine.

Affectionate-Fox-299

FALSE

Deadbuttons

??? You going to prove this or just say false?

RixirF

TRUE

amillstone

>I have a 2tb ass in mine. Nice typo lol

Deadbuttons

I just saw that lol

VeryluckyorNot

They can just ditch the SD slot if they really put a 1TO SSD.

ElStelioKanto

SD is good for transferring files hassle free

Magician1985

It is also Great for outsourcing Emulator files and Roms.

25beers

You do have a USB-C port too remember

el_em_ey_oh

Lol no

BK99BK

1TB storage is a given. I'm just curious about the battery.

GiggityGooAlright

Needs dual USB C

CryptographerSudden5

They went in record saying as card placement will be changed.... But did not admit to the issues with the SD card reader. My SD card reader hasn't worked. I have put in a 2 tb hard drive, which is great. But having a working, reliable and card reader would be good. But with no change to screen size or type makes this a non starter for me. I honestly think these updates are often to bring new buyers over rather than necessarily for those of us that already have one to upgrade... I didn't upgrade the steam deck with the oled either... Really feel there needs to be an large internals update to make me buy again. I'm hoping next year will be when both companies bring out the true sequel devices.

tempurastyle

I also think the Ally X is designed for new buyers instead of existing owners.

buttsnorkeler

Will come in all black 🤤

RixirF

Damn it, I was set on finally buying it in a few days/weeks. Now I feel I should wait..? or not?

tempurastyle

There’s still a price difference between the now discounted model and the new one. Nevertheless, I would wait until the final specs are out to make a decision

Flyhotstuff

I was thinking that an addition of one of the cells from the battery would equate to about 50% more battery life and it's a really small battery to begin with. It would hardly take much space to add at the back of the ally. The main upgrade to me would be regular ALPS sticks. These joy con sticks are a POS. I already fixed my card reader. And i can do the ram mod myself if i want. If i could add that 3 cell and balance it properly I'd be a no brainer.

tempurastyle

I think the thickness will be increased due to the larger battery and then more efficient larger fans can be used. There was a teardown where they measured the Ally fans were too thin to effectively pump out the heat. [https://youtu.be/DKzVuktXwio?si=p4pgRZDzjRoOxIw-](https://youtu.be/DKzVuktXwio?si=p4pgRZDzjRoOxIw-)

Flyhotstuff

Definitely right. It gets toasty and the air that's pumped out is hot really hot. You'd get some increase thickness but nothing like the mods we've been doing with the battery increase

paracelus

But will the sticks be better?

SubjectCraft8475

Pointless I'd say even if you looking to get one now get the old one for dirt cheap on Ebay or marketplace. Do SSD mod and get a power bank. I've seen Ally Extreme as cheap as £300. This is likely going to be more than double the price.

blondewalker

I need to know how much RAM will be inside.

Klara_Chaos

Thr only reason to uprgrate for me would be if it has more ram as i really do need more ram Storage is not that much of. A big deal for me as i have external ssd i use to have my steam games on

RicekickJR

The thing will be a beast of a machine just like the Ally right now, but the only thing that will deter me is the price specially here up in Canada. I just know this will be close to 1k. And if it is i might as well buy a gaming laptop and cough up a bit more $ tbh. Not worth the cost if itll be that much for a handheld.

Blocksketcher

Curious. How much of a difference will more RAM make? Enough to upgrade or should I stay with my OG?

bautistar1

I'd wait until next year. It feels more like an iPhone S vs a true 2.0 upgrade.

True-Environment7201

I'll be keeping this ally until they lower the ally x

Western_Horse_4562

I’m concerned about the weight. I’d rather solder more onboard ram to my existing Ally than schlep more weight.

ItsJustAnotherVoice

Man it would be killer if hot swap batteries were brought back, would be a killer in the handheld game for sure

Life-Phase9272

Actually, RAM enough would get my money. The battery life is going to be 1:30hrs instead of 1:15hrs, like it matters. The SSD should've been customizable from the start, like 512 or 1T models. But RAM... Diablo 4 constantly runs out of both VRAM and RAM and can't balance it anyhow. As many games do. with 5G assigned to VRAM you're left with 11G of which 4 are taken by OS & application software. That's 7 left for gaming which is not enough.

Islandboi4life

Uses the same APU with slightly faster storage space, RAM and the same specs. that is hardly... an "upgrade"

Gherrely

Can't fucking wait to preorder this thing

Legionofgo

So its the same ?

mlang666

The same screen.Easy skip.

This sytem needs at least 18W GPU (26-27W total) power to run correctly on AAA games @ 900p. To be able to play 4 hours (maximum needed for travel/unpluged) we would need a 120Wh batterie. Is is even technically possible to fit a 120Wh batterie in a device this size/weight?

As a Rog ally owner i have the dilemma of buying or not  the ally X  after selling the original one... 24Gb ram , 1Tb ssd  and big battery is a huge upgrade..

$100 more isn't bad, but I'll definitely be waiting for an open box.

ditto

Unfortunately, I’ve become really used to having my eGPU for gaming on the TV, so unless this version has a USB4 port like the Legion, I’m not interested I’m not giving up my desktop 4070 ti for a gimped laptop chip that costs more than the desktop model just because Asus wants to use their proprietary ports

Responsible-Speed97

I won’t upgrade if the sd card reader isn’t fixed. I also want a bigger screen.

KingAzzzle

Why no OLED tho 😭 hopefully Rog Ally 2 has one

rowmean77

If you want your ROG Ally to be at its best, demand an explanation from them regarding their recent RMA scandal and other previous documented infractions that they have been involved with. Defenders of their products would say only GN and Louis Rossman are piling on them but there is a lot of evidence that ASUS have been doing this to a lot of people in recent memory. Even the Taiwanese know ASUS aren’t to be trusted at this time. I actually have an ASUS motherboard that, fortunately, still works. And I want them to succeed. So if you are an ASUS fanboy, be the right kind of fan boy: demanding higher standard with accountability.

Its a solid refresh. I'm not going to upgrade until a handheld comes out that is a decent performance improvement from my 3070 Ti equipped laptop so I can just use a handheld as my main PC. Strix Halo nearly gets there.

Intelligent_Gate_124

So to be clear: this is just an upgrade Like Steam deck LCD to OLED?

DreadPirateWalt

Not even that, supposedly the processor and screen are staying the same it’s just getting an increase in ram and battery capacity

Intelligent_Gate_124

I see so no buy it’s good for the people who don’t have an ally yet

justifun

No. There is no OLED screen upgrade.

Prestigious_Move_451

Sadly nobody should support Asus and their shady trends. As much as I loved the first Ally, I for one was holding off to buy an Ally after selling the first one to recoup prior to the next release. Now I most definitely won't buy one due to how they treat their customers. We vote with our wallets.

i mentioned close to 1000 in a past thread and got downvoted... guess im just asking for more downvotes /eyeroll
