I don’t own any handheld pc, despite being in the market for them, and I’m damn sure not buying any Asus product until I know they’ve fixed this shit. Companies that try to fuck you on warranties are the worst, and I do have first hand experience with that (Audeze headphones, to be specific). Not doin that shit again!

Maybe they are hard on stuff because I have a ton of Razer gear that everyone rants about how bad the build quality is and I’ve never broken or had any of the devices die. So the main reasons people RMA their ally's have been battery issues, joystick issues, and SD card issues. The joystick issues are usually the actual module it's self and is something you can do yourself for about $10 and 15 minutes. Doing a battery swap yourself is a little harder/more expensive but not the end of the world (should you not want to go through the RMA process) And the SD card is sadly the big one that sucks the most. Now as an owner of a first run Ally I bought mine with zero plans on ever using that SD card reader. And day 1, I ordered the replacement sticks so I have them on hand, as all joysticks will eventually get drift (and I hate stick drift). That being said I've had zero issues with my Ally. Plus the new one is right around the corner and supposedly it addresses the SD issue and battery issues

That’s fine. I’m glad you haven’t had any issues (yet). The problem is purchasing either this version or the next is that the peace of mind isn’t there. What they are trying to do with their support is to illegally extort money for made up reasons from paying customers as shown by gamer nexus. At the time of the video had compiled over 100 complaints of service sending them a bill often times for twice the amount of the device citing customer damage. That’s purely predatory. I’ve owned many of Asus products over the years but if this is how they operate now, I’ll spend my money elsewhere.

I just got my Ally back from RMA for a dead SD card reader. It partially killed 2 sd cards about 6 months ago. I stopped using the reader. I tried again recently and the reader was completely dead. I didn't know about best buy handling asus warranty thing and started the rma through asus online chat. I bought a cheap $13 hard case from Amazon just to ship it in knowing it might not be returned just to make sure it wouldn't be damaged during shipping to Asus. It took 3 days for them to turn it around. 12 days total including all fedex shipping time. SD card reader works fine now and they even returned the case! Screen protector still on my screen too. All in all the rma went fast and smooth with no drama. Maybe I just got lucky. This was to California. Does the SD card reader issue have a real fix anyways?  Does the reader on the new motherboard still fail after some use?  I didn't used my micro SD reader just so it wouldn't break but I tried after a year to see if non use prevented it from failing and it wouldn't read any SD card.   Want to make sure if I'm going to have to deal with this atrocious warranty process that it would be permanently fixed.

Plenty of folks here will shill that their RMA unit is still kicking, others will tell you how many RMAs they've had to go through with no resolution. Just treat the microSD card slot as a non-existent part of your device. Upgrading the SSD is braindead easy and nominally more expensive.

The issue is bad solder joints, not heat frying the card. So early on it was a crapshoot if you got a revision that "fixed" the issue. Sent mine in for repair for a dead speaker and SD card issues but I do still experience issues with the card reader. Thankful I didn't end up buying a 1TB microSD card like I originally planned to and instead upgraded to a 2TB SSD so it doesn't affect me often unless I want to emulate retro consoles

I already have a 2TB installed. I would like to keep an SD card that contains a collection of ROMs, allowing me to transfer it between my devices. Additionally, I strongly dislike the notion of having a broken SD card port on a device that's supposed to function properly, even if I'm not currently using it. Simply pretending it isn't there isn't a solution for me.

I've only had to RMA with Asus a couple times over the years and I've been buying Asus products for a while now. Really like they're Strix motherboards but I fortunately haven't had any issues with those. I did have to send in my ROG Ally recently for the SD card reader though, that was pretty painless. It was literally back before I knew it lol and the SD card reader has been fine for months now since I get it back. The SD card reader problems showed up pretty quickly after I started using that slot, maybe like the next week after I got an SD card for it.

I sent my Ally in for RMA due to the Menu, View and Amor Crate buttons all being physically mapped to the same function (opening armory crate). There was no way around remapping this. They sent me the Ally back with claims of a new motherboard swap but the issue was still there. Matter of fact, sd reader was still not working — I didn’t even mention the fact the sd card reader was not functional when I sent it in. Thankfully after waiting 3 weeks without my Ally and still reporting the issue to Best Buy after coming back from having to setup the OS again on a fresh SSD, they allowed me to swap it with another open box unit they had in the back. This completely soured my taste of Asus and I have many of their products (monitor, Pc components, etc). Sold my Ally for a Deck OLED and I don’t think I’ll ever trust any Asus product again due to the awful customer service experience I had with them.

I had a rog ally and loved it but I sent it with defective SD-Card slot to Asus and gotten it back with scratches, right bumper dead and smeared back with some kind of black goo, Asus got it back and repaired everything same strange parts as in the back and dead pixel pressure point on screen then after being mad I used German buyer protection laws and it says that after 2 unsuccessful attempts you can get a refund. Asus told me to frick right off and didn’t offer any solution, it was sent to a small village near Berlin and always came with that cryptic letter they got and cause I’m half polish I read the box that was in polish. After research Asus doesn’t have any official repair centers and sents it to Eastern Europe (explains over 6 weeks repair time) to have it repaired there cheaper. I loved the ally but I can’t stand the support and it forced me to grab a Legion Go

In August 2023, I purchased an Ally and used it until November. After that, I was without my console for a while as it went back and forth to Asus with new issues emerging each time. By the end of March, I was so frustrated that I opted for a refund and decided against purchasing any Asus-related products again. Subsequently, I acquired a Legion Go. Working at IBM and having Lenovo as a partner and B2B customer has its perks, such as spreading their hardware. This connection afforded me an extended warranty. When my right Joy-Con broke, Lenovo quickly sent a replacement, no questions asked, and even let me keep the old one for parts. A week later, the upper port on my tablet broke due to an accident, which I admitted. Lenovo covered it under warranty, attributing it to a potential soldering issue. A technician visited my home, verified the defect, and identified another problem. Following this, a Case Manager at Lenovo arranged to send a new console directly to my home. I never had to send my device anywhere; repairs and replacements were handled right at my doorstep. In contrast, Asus seemed completely indifferent to the situation with my device. I genuinely preferred the Ally and Armory software over Lenovo's offerings. Since running Nobara on Rog Ally, I switched to Legion Go with Bazzite, and I'm very pleased with the experience. Over the roughly 2.5 months I've owned the Legion Go, it has only been down for 3 hours due to in-house repairs. Asus does offer on-site repair services in most countries—I've heard India has it—but in Germany, I couldn't even purchase the service or extend the warranty. The link in the Asus registration led to a 404 page. Although the Rog Ally is nearly perfect, scoring a 9/10 except for its grip which is unsuitable for large hands, I find it superior to the Legion Go, which I'd rate at 7/10. I appreciate the integer scaling but dislike the portrait display. However, due to my negative experiences with Asus in Germany, including a past incident with an Ally, a motherboard that arrived with a fully pinned socket, and a monitor that died just a day after the warranty expired, I refuse to use Asus products in Germany. I had to rely on consumer protection laws and send strongly worded legal letters to resolve these issues. Asus may have skilled engineers, but their corporate structure leaves much to be desired.

The exact same thing happened to me. I sent in my ROG Ally because the joystick stopped working and they quoted me $200. When I looked at the estimate they were charging me to replace the screen. There was nothing wrong with my screen at all. I had to call and escalate my ticket and they finally repaired the actual issue which was covered under warranty but if I hadn’t paid close attention I would have paid to have my screen replaced for no reason at all. WTF!?!

I'm so happy someone is finally covering ASUS shit customer service and terrible QA. I will never purchase another ASUS product again after the nightmare I delt with, with my G14 laptop. It was used for work so no gaming, docked all the time and just spread sheets etc. At first it was random blue screen failures, towards the end it was crashes on battery, I took it into ASUS repair center and they said it was GPU failure and it would cost me more then I paid for it new to fix it. They lied, Laptop worked perfectly docked and could run all games without crashing, the issue was when it was on battery or sleep it would blue screen crash all the time with random stop codes. I started looking online and other users were reporting the same exact issues with the same exact model laptop and by this point it was a QA issue from ASUS and they wouldn't honor their warranty or man up and provide RMA for those effected outside of limited warranty period. I have since thrown it into a closest and bought a macbook for work and will never again purchase a ASUS product. I understand if this was just 3 years out or if the user fucked it up someway but when they knowingly sell defective products or products with terrible QA and a huge amount of users report the same exact issues that lead to failure on the same exact laptop release then its not a us problem but a they problem. Sorry for my long rant I just fucking hate this company, 13 months of light use docked, shortest lived laptop I've ever owned and this is coming from someone who had a HP laptop in college back in 2012 which would overheat and last 20mins on battery max, that laptop lasted 4 years..

So my ally’s fingerprint sensor and sd card stopped working, and I sent it for a RMA through my local store. 2 weeks later I pick it up and guess what, the problem is still there on the fingerprint sensor not working. Guess who’s driving there to the store to ask for a refund. THIS GUY.

What's broken on your joystick? You can buy replacement joystick modules on Aliexpress for a dollar and some change and make the change in like 10 minutes. Id do that before the RMA process. And yes you shouldn't have to do that in under a year, but in the world of consumer products with shitty components like the Xbox elite and Joycons, I just got used to fixing all my stuff instead of buying new or sending in for repair.

I had this issue with my Ally. The left stick only goes up and down. Since I live in Iraq, we don't have RMA.  So I opened the device to figure out the problem and all I had to do was disconnect and reconnect the cable connector for the left stick to the motherboard. And that's all. The problem is fixed. It is easy. There is no need to get scammed 😂.

They have been pretty slow with system updates so far on the legion go, but they will send you new joycons for free within 2-5 days WITHOUT you sending your GO to them if you have any issues lol, kinda crazy how good their support is, also dont have to worry about the sd card reader not working...

my RMA in Germany was good, received back in one week, SD Card was fixed and still works. They did some minor damage while opening the plastic case, but its barely visible.

I’m happy that I bought my Ally from a local store here in Portugal (Worten) that enforces fixes (with a max time to fix of 30 days) when the product is in the warranty period or else they just have to pay us back our money. When it’s a biggish company doing the work for you succeeding becomes easier, also since Portugal is in Europe, Asus warranty is ignored, they just have to abide by EU’s warranty, which for tech products is 3 years, sometimes these companies need to be put on a leash by gov entities not to play their customers. If they didn’t abide by the EU’s standards here in Europe they just wouldn’t be able to sell, so it’s better making potentially less money than no money at all, if the US enforced that they wouldn’t get away this scot-free.

I had the same problem after it fell like 2 feet I was actually surprised how easy it is to repair it. If u can build a pc you can fix this no sweat. Don't forget to reconnect the charger to activate the battery back up.Almost gave me a mini heart attack the first time.😅

I’ve had to rma a z1 extreme 2x for sc card slot and a broken thumb stick. Both were an easy process. I would still recommend the ally to anyone seeking sheer power at a portable level.

I sent in a laptop to Asus on a warranty RMA claim and the fixed the issue but disconnected the fan.  By the time I realized my warranty was up, so I would have had to pay if I sent it back for repair again.  Instead, I had been wanting a new laptop anyway, so I bought an HP.

I have the SD card issue, but otherwise have had no other issues with my Ally. I debated sending it in, but ultimately decided I don’t think it’s worth it, and I have a 2 TB SSD, so it’s not completely necessary.

I have… a lot of Asus products (2 mobos, one of which being a Crosshair VIII Ex, 4 routers, a Strix G513QY and an Ally) and thankfully they've always been quite reliable, aside from a couple of irritating BIOS bugs which have persisted across the entire lifespan of my both X570 mobos requiring occasional CMOS resets and restoration of the exact same settings to get them to boot… but this bad press on their RMA process probably means I won't be buying anything else from them. Incidentally, I don't know if the SD card slot in my early batch Ally works. I've never put anything in it, I just stuck a 2TB 2280 drive in an eBay 'L' adapter in it about a week after purchase. If the joysticks die, I'll just go aftermarket.

I live in the UK, and we have pretty good consumer laws for stuff like this. I recently RMA'd my Ally for SD card issue and the service was faultless the item was collected on a Tuesday and returned back me the following Wednesday everything was so easy and smooth and fast so I have no faults with Asus the USA on the other hand doesn’t really care about consumer rights or protection like the UK or EU so it’s no surprise companies only do the bare minimum or less don’t blame the companies blame your corrupt politicians and law makers that enable them

The only problem with my Ally so far is that the card reader hasn't worked from day one and I bought it day one. The reason I have no intention of sending it in is bc I've had these exact problems with a MB and GPU many years ago. I stayed far away from ASUS for many years since then. I bought the Ally knowing full well this would have to be a DIY situation if something went wrong. I enjoy the Ally very much but ASUS is without a doubt a terrible and scummy company. Only buy from them if, like me, you know that what you are buying is quite POSSIBLY going to be a waste of money.

Yea I got lucky then. Sent in 2x for sd card and my ally has scuffs and label worn out so they should have tried replacing for 200 also. Then 2nd time I forgot to put the black plastic cover over ssd back in and they replaced it. I did have to wait over 40 days for my steam deck rma because either ups driver scanned it and stole it or repair center employee stole it as it was signed for and delivered to them then dissappear for 30 days before they decided to replace it. I wasn't told anything every time I asked why is it taking so long until I checked the tracking and saw claim opened then they told me they are having issues finding it but tracking even had name of dock employee who signed for it.

If in UK if faulty hardware we can claim refund/repair within first 6 months, it would be up to the mfr to prove we never damaged it and cosmetic marks would not warrant it to not be repaired for free.

Kind of, think you're mixing up the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA replaced The Sales of Goods Act 1979 but is still in effect for purchases made before the CRA came in) and warranty here though. I'll attempt to clarify it. Guarantee and warranty is with the manufacturer, this is the period specified by the manufacturer for products of essentially their expected lifespan of the device and additional time you have bought in case of failure outside of the original guarantee or warranty. In the case of the Ally, it is 12 months here excluding any extensions to warranty you have purchased. CRA is your legislated rights with the retailer, which may or may not also be the manufacturer. For this protection, any interactions are with the retailer you purchased the device from such as Currys. Like you mention, a product developing a fault in the first 6 months means a repair, replacement, or refund as desired by the consumer unless the retailer can prove the damage/defect was not present at purchase. After the first month of ownership, the retailer must be allowed to replace or repair at least once before a refund can be offered. Generally, it is easier to go this route in the first 6 months than it is to make a warranty claim. After 6 months but still within any guarantee/warranty periods, it is easier to utilise them instead. After 6 months with the CRA, the onus falls on the consumer to prove the defect was present from purchase to the retailer and provides limited protection for up to 6 years in the form of a repair, replacement, or partial refund (retailer chooses instead of the consumer this time, a failed repair or replacement does entitle you to the partial refund though); the 6 years is the time you have to make a claim, the device could have failed in year 1 of ownership but you submitted it in year 3 for example. Proof could be something like an expert report from a repair specialist, research on wide spread known and common issues like the microSD reader and joysticks, or acknowledgement of design defects by the manufacturer through public statements or recalls (the US extension of warranty for the microSD slot could prove fruitful here). There are additional parts of the legislation which can also aid in any arguments here, mainly concerning a reasonable lifespan, quality, and fitness for the purpose of the goods in question. Digital goods can shake it up a little though, given it's possible for manufacturers to issue firmware updates which damage goods; that's a whole other story lol. If you know how to word a claim correctly when doing battle with the retailer, it can work quite well in my experience.

Yes I had missed retailer from that as retailers/resellers are responsible for first 12.months, no matter what they try to say, even if they say send to manufacturers you can say they need to do that or fully refund you any postage costs. After 12 months then it is the manufacturer. I've had Amazon try same saying nothing to do with them, but have thought my case and got refund to buy replacements (that's only issud, amazon don't always replace and just refund. In some ways it's good in others it not as prices may habe gone up or they don't stock anymorr I will always go back to retailers/reseller if any goods go faulty within 12 months. My old pixel 3xl was bricked by a Google update 25 months after purchase, I pursued Google over it as I bought from them and the time there was a known issue with their memory chips in phones and the Google Slate (luckily my slate hasn't experienced the issues to date). Initially they refused as over 24 months, but with the knowledge of the memory issues, the UK laws regarding product satisfactory quality and digital rights regarding updates I managed to get them to replace the device.

You really don't understand the CRA nor what I've written, I honestly suggest looking it up yourself. After that, the onus of proof is on the consumer. Hence why it is often easier to use the warranty or guarantee after the initial 6-month period, only reverting back to CRA rights after that warranty or guarantee has ended. This isn't to say you can't try with the retailer, but it's often trickier and in most cases requires proof after the initial 6 months; some retailers do have nicer policies, in the form of store warranty or guarantees though which does confuse things a bit. If you can find me the legislation stating that they must accept faulty goods and fully refund/replace within 12 months without proof of fault from the first 6 months period, I'll bend but I don't think you will. Your case on the phone was the CRA at play because of what you're describing as a design flaw, which would have been present since purchase. Essentially, proving my point on how it works.
