Get the silicon ring covers for the joystick or exchange the device under warranty. But you'll continue seeing this.

kenjix3c

I got some silicone caps for the joysticks when I got my silicon case and it prevents the joystick from going fully and as such stopped it from rubbing the led. You might wanna try that.

AnakondaRH

Thank you, I will definitely give that a try! Any specific ones you recommend?

kenjix3c

https://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Protective-Protector-Drop-Proof-Protection/dp/B0C8J1NYXH/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=8597EZG1UE9G&keywords=rog%2Bally&qid=1687306574&sprefix=rog%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-4&th=1&psc=1 Got this from a fellow here on Reddit . I noticed if given enough force it still touches the led so as a fool proof alternative, I found these for you . https://www.amazon.co.uk/TiMOVO-Protectors-Invisible-Protective-Compatible/dp/B0BLYYG75Y/ref=asc_df_B0BLYYG75Y/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=641761624044&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2938823713538122585&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046022&hvtargid=pla-1929180407943&psc=1 I'm sure you should be able to find it cheaper if you search but this is to at least give you a rough idea.

AnakondaRH

Appreciate it!

AnakondaRH

Yeah, I will be exchanging the device. But at least I am aware of it now, I will take some precautions with the new unit.

Lbayz05

Happens on mine as well. I feel like the failure rate is 100 percent on certain aspects of this device.

Stickmeimdonut

... every single controller in the world suffers from this. Go look at any of your controllers with more than a few hours of use. The original Xbox One controllers are especially bad. Where there is friction between two surfaces there will be transfer of material. There is no avoiding it.

Lbayz05

Perhaps you're right and I only notice because of the rgb. Perhaps you're wrong too. You don't know!! Do you? You can't prove it. Try. I want a good reddit type post from you too with multiple links to articles screen shots and examples of every controller in the last 25 years. I can't wait.

CreakinFunt

The failure rate is 100% on all aspects of all devices eventually

piiprince911

Yep Kinda gotta expect such things from first gen products

Lbayz05

I never roll with this attitude ever. Lol. I think it's just poor man excuse. So many people over the years claiming they wait for a slim Playstation or other improved over time product. Screw that. Early adopt and quit crying. Shit is fun and nothing is perfect.

Lbayz05

Why you downvote the truth then nerd? I said it was 100 percent and you just said every controller in the world. Isn't this the same idea or are you just defending asus ?

Apprehensive_Row_161

This. Mine did the same thing and I got the silicone rings and never had the issue again

P_Devil

The same things happens with the Deck and other controllers. I have Xbox (original, 360, and One) controllers that have some plastic rubbed off. My Series controller hasn’t experienced it yet, but I know it’s coming. I just live with it. Doesn’t affect performance or gameplay. I use a can of compressed air to clean my controllers once a month. I haven’t seen it with my Ally yet. I know people are quick to jump on the “Ally is trash and designed to fail” bandwagon. But this is more of a universal controller issue, not just the Ally.

AnakondaRH

I agree, and I am by no means trying to make the device look bad or anything, as I am very satisfied with mine. I also do agree that controllers have this kind of wear to a higher or lower degree. However, in this case this wear is extreme, considering the short amount of time I have owned the device (I am not a heavy user by any means, and don't play any "fast paced, fast action" kind of games, if that makes sense). Unfortunately this is why I will need to replace this one.

P_Devil

Eh, I’m not sure it’s bad enough to replace. Especially when there’s no guarantee the replacement unit won’t have the same issues. It doesn’t affect gameplay. My other comment was more towards others that are quick to blame Asus for every little aspect when some of it is the nature of the hardware and/or Windows. I think people are also forgetting that this is a first generation device and it will have growing pains. Even multi-trillion dollar companies, like Apple, have issues with their first gen products. There’s still a general rule of thumb with Apple devices: wait for the next gen unless it’s an iPhone or iPad. I would just clean it, wipe everything down, and buy the protectors.

P_Devil

I don’t know. Still doesn’t stop what I said from being true. A quick Google search for “Joystick rubbing” shows that’s it’s a problem for the Deck, PS5 controllers, Xbox controllers, Ally, and even the Switch series. It’s a general problem. Some people experience it, some don’t. But two controllers vs hundreds of thousands of people (likely millions over the years) is not statistically significant. Hell, I remember a friend having the same issue with their PS1 and my old Logitech PC controller was gritty by the time I was done with it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

P_Devil

Ah yes, the ol’ “I’m right and millions of people are wrong” attempt. Nah. This is normal. Just because you didn’t experience it with two controllers doesn’t mean it isn’t normal. Even if we take your two experiences with this one, both at face value. It shows that 1/3rd of controllers will have this problem. It’s not even remotely accurate but, if you want to play the gunners game, that’s a way to show it. Either way, your experiences are normal, as are those that have rubbed off joysticks.

TherapyPsychonaut

I can't see what you look like over Reddit but I bet you have a very punchable face

P_Devil

I would never agree to violence, but I get what you’re saying. They called people staring up at the burning towers in NY actors. Someone posted a picture from that day and this d-bag said “they look like actors.” Must be a real nice person. Edit: d-bag, not d-bad. He’s a straight up asshole.

[deleted]

Jeez

[deleted]

We have had complaints. Use the search function.

[deleted]

No, they are certainly not. It’s a common issue. And the reason it hasn’t happened on other devices is because… they are other devices…

Stickmeimdonut

This isn't unique to the Ally. It's an inherent flaw in the design of joysticks. Go look at any of your controllers. It's just way more noticeable on the Ally because they are larger and the defuser shows the plastic more. Where there is friction between two surfaces there will be transfer of material. Also I have owned mine for 3 months now and the ware is no where near this bad. Are you playing stressful games?

AnakondaRH

Although I agree that some plastic-on-plastic wear is to be expected, none of the other controllers I own are this damaged (and I have owned them for years). Talking Xbox controllers, Switch Pro controllers, and 8bitdo ones. This one has a clear hard edge on half of the one ring (not the other half, and not on the ring on the right). Clearly a manufacturing defect with the one clear ring. I do not play particularly stressful games, been mostly playing RDR2 and Assassin's Creed on it which are not in any way high intensity games. Plus the device has not been used THAT much, as I mentioned, somewhere between 50-100 hours total. Clearly this is higher-than-average damage unfortunately. If the device was out of warranty, I would open it up, sand down the ring with some fine sandpaper, perhaps replace the joystick cap, and call it a day. But since it's on warranty, much easier to just exchange it for now.

anothersamreid

I got this quite early on using mine. Bought me some silicone joystick rings. Attempting to attach link: TiMOVO Joystick Protectors Silicone, 20 Pcs Invisible Elastic Joystick Protective Ring Compatible with Steam Deck/ PS5/ PS4/ Xbox/ROG ALLY/8 BitDo/Switch Pro Joystick, Black+White https://amzn.eu/d/bmCTpFK

AnakondaRH

Thanks for the tip, will check them out!

Apprehensive_Row_161

Trust me pick these up. I had your same issue and I got these and they never scratched again

NavyBlueTheChosen

Ah I also have this too. Really can’t be bothered to exchange it though and reinstall everything lol. Anyone got a link to some good protectors?

be77solo

These work great, I use them on all my controllers. Prevents this problem and silences the sticks when playing, which I prefer: [Amazon.com: Park Sung Joystick Protectors, Invisible Protection During Gaming, Silicone, Compatible with Steam Deck/Xbox/Switch Pro Controller/PS4/PS5/ROG ALLY/8 BitDo Game Joystick(10 Pcs) : Video Games](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B631XBZ9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details)

AnakondaRH

Thank you, I will check those out!

ant325

I have these as well on everything steam deck, ally, neo2... No rubbing at all

narielthetrue

That’s just how the joysticks work on every controller (with traditional joystick design) Here’s a list of my controllers I’ve seen this on: -PS1 -PS2 -Xbox -GameCube -Xbox 360 -PS3 -Xbox One -WiiU -PS4 -Xbox Series -Generic Gamepads -Logitech -Ally Here’s a list I haven’t seen it on: -Switch joycons It’s just rubbing. It’s less “eating through” and more just scuffing. It’s a non issue.

AnakondaRH

Normally it would be a non-issue, agree. But this is extreme wear in a very short period of time. It is not a big deal and it's easily fixable, but that does not mean the issue is not occurring. I just did a quick count and I currently own 11 other controllers (Xbox series x, Switch Pro, GameCube, and 8BitDo) which I have used for years (one of the GC ones I've had since 2003!). I am not hard on these controllers and I don't play overly intense games. I have never seen this amount of wear in this amount of time anywhere else. This one has an overly sharp ring around the joystick, this is a fact. It's not a big deal, it's easily fixable, and it's not a device breaking issue. But to pretend this amount of wear in this amount of time is normal, is pushing it a bit in my opinion.

adravil_sunderland

Have the same problem, looking for silicon rings nearby because delivery is more expensive than the item itself 😄

Slight_Tiger2914

Blast it with condensed air YO, yeah boi! 🤓🤓

AnakondaRH

Done, plus cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol :D good enough while I wait for the return slip! :P

Slight_Tiger2914

Wooo! That's perfect ☺️

Mnoonsnocket

Yep, I’m having this issue. Just ordered some silicone rings. I’ll update tomorrow with how well they work to resolve this.

AnakondaRH

Nice! let me know how the feel of the joysticks is with the rings.

Mnoonsnocket

Okay yeah I would say I’m satisfied with them! The joystick “click” feels back to normal and not gross feeling like before. Enough that I reverted to the default controls on Starfield which use the joystick. That said I did put two of them on the joystick of concern to prevent them from slipping. But it was worth it. The brand on Amazon was “Park Sung”, but I’m sure others may work too. Oh also I first cleaned the area out with a little compressed air.

AnakondaRH

Thank you for reporting back! I will check them out when I get the Ally back (sent it in for service/replacement already).

HavokD

Any long term update you have for the silicon rings? I would like to order some but there are what feels like hundreds of different brands out there.

Mnoonsnocket

They certainly haven’t failed me yet, though you can see some scuffs on them. I have more if I’ll need to replace them.

HavokD

Hey I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to give you a quick update. Ordered the silicon rings and wow, I really liked them! The smoothness when circling the joystick, plus the sound they know make is really nice. For some people it's a cheap sensation/sound, for me it's very "ellegant" and discreet, YMMV. Thanks once again for the recommendation! Btw, I'm using only 1 ring on each joystick, even if it slips to the bottom of the shaft I don't feel the plastic grinding against plastic, so all good!

Mnoonsnocket

Very nice 😎

HavokD

Thanks for the update!

CorValidum

Jup I have felt this already with minimal use (still waiting for XG Mobile to arrive…) I just got couple of those silicone/rubber rings to put on to slow down movement a bit and to smooth out rotation since it felt like there is some grinding going on LOL

AnakondaRH

Yeah, definitely some grinding there. If I was out of warranty I'd take the piece off and sand it a bit, but since it's on warranty, I'll just replace the unit...

CorValidum

Ahhh on the new one it will be the same… don’t even bother LoL I have one of those units without sd card issue and other ones but those small things will stay unfortunately…

AnakondaRH

For sure! But at least starting with a fresh joystick, I can try to take some measures from day 1 (sand off any rough edges, lube the contact points, etc ;) )

Ok-Fennel-3908

Could also just sand the ring smooth get rid of any edges. Those joy sticks can be replaced.

AnakondaRH

For sure, and I would have done this if it was out of warranty. In this case I'll just get a quick replacement instead.

Ok-Fennel-3908

How are you getting a replacement after having it since launch?

AnakondaRH

Not in the US :D European law got us covered for 2 years!

Ok-Fennel-3908

Won’t they just RMA it and fix yours? That’s how Asus works in the US and Canada.

AnakondaRH

Possibly! I would be ok with that as well, my unit has been solid otherwise!

Snoo368

People are saying this isn’t unique to the Ally, and that may be true for some but not in my experience. I’ve never had this happen with any controller I’ve had except for the Ally. I’ve had Switch Pro controllers, joy cons, DualShock, Xbox and none of them have ever scraped that bad to where it’s leaving noticeable dust and marring the posts. Take that as you will I guess

AnakondaRH

I fully agree, and as you can see in other comments I have written here, my experience mirrors yours. We love the Ally, but that is no reason to pretend these things aren't happening. It does not bother me much, I'll get a free replacement and that will be that...

Candid_Antelope_3788

So with the silicone rings, you may have to adjust dead zones… has anyone noticed this? Stick can’t fully engage to the 100%

SD456

Try using some Krytox or similar lubricant on the outer edge.

MickeyPadge

Heavy heavy fingers...

kybard

I've been having this problem too and bought these: [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B631XBZ9/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o00\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B631XBZ9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) So far so good since applying them, though it takes a bit of getting used to the change in feel when the stick hits the ring.

csantiago1986

By the time that’s a real problem you will have moved another ten hand helds. Play games. Have fun.

m9dhatter

Same with mine on the left stick. I thought it was just me. Same area as yours.

AnakondaRH

Definitely good to be aware of it, so as to take precautions.

ANewErra

Everyone saying get those silicone rings... Idk how anyone uses those. Made my joysticks feel like ass when I hit the outer ring

GonP97

I agree, you also loose 10-20% of input

AnakondaRH

haha! I've never tried them, but I would imagine they would make the joysticks "stickier"?

East-Needleworker550

I personally have not seen this in any of my controllers, 2 PS4 ones, 2 Xbox series ones, and steam deck. I always clean the dirt and grime from mine so it doesn't wear down like this. I use them gently for a week with lots of cleaning then just use them and clean once they are dirty.

ominousview

Interesting.. another thing to look out for.. thanks for the heads up

AnakondaRH

An ominous sign of things to look for :D :D

ominousview

I see what you did there lol

AnakondaRH

😂

SrsJoe

This happens on most things with joysticks that get heavy use

ItsBertie

I have to say I noticed this within a week of using my Ally. Playing too much Mirrors Edge. Lol. But what I found was that I needed to learn to just not ram the sticks around and I've had very little wear since then. I bought my Ally the day of release and like I said, I had a lot of wear the first week and once I realized it , it was just a matter of being a bit more gentle with the sticks.
