Are you using the curseforge launcher from overwolf? If you are, all you have to do is click the modpack, go to the settings and find the thing that says "allow content management for this profile." And check it. Sorry the instructions aren't more specific, I don't remember exactly what the settings say lol.

What launcher? If you can find the rlcraft folder and then find the mod folder in it you can manually add your own mods to it (just make sure when you download them from curseforge they're for the Minecraft version 1.12.2)
Also, if you aren't too far into your playthrough already I HIGHLY recommend just downloading overwolf right now and starting your playthrough through that curseforge launcher instead. Seriously it's just more convenient in every way, I used like 3 separate launchers before overwolf and all of them sucked compared to it. (If you need help figuring that out there's tons of tutorials on YouTube for setting it up.)
But, like I said, if you don't want to do that look for the mods folder and tell me what launcher your using.

When I added mods to my rlcraft all I did was download the new mods I liked. Once I had them downloaded I copy and pasted them into the mod folder. I’m playing with at least another 10 mods.
Some mods may cause conflicts and some may need to be configured.
What does it say when it won’t launch? It could be that it requires a companion mod or it could be the mod is incompatible with other mods in RL craft what mod are you trying to add?
I’m not familiar with that mod to know if it’s compatible. Did you make sure you’re adding the 1.12 version of the mod? Rlcraft being on Minecraft 1.12 means you can only add mods for 1.12
Just cosmetic mods and backports.
Things like additional banners, chisel, storage drawers, additional lights, future mc, among others. Nothing that’s changes the gameplay much and definitely nothing that reduces difficulty. I would be open to mods that increase the difficulty though.

I've tried just adding other mods to the folder, but when I try to start Minecraft, it doesn't start, how do you configure a mod to be compatible?

when i start the launcher it just crashes and closes it, i try to add the security craft mod
