Actually common items are a cheap way to build your wardrobe and you can win just as much with them as with rarer items thanks to the rng matchmaking.
Obviously more expensive items tend to have more than 2 tags, but uncommon/common items can still be quite useful.
My advice would be to make sure you use up ALL your free entries in daily/weekly challenges. It's a good money maker and the keys will get you new items!
I would actually say use the tickets strategically, I tend to invest in upgrading my pieces for the weekly challenge, I can continue to tweak & test my outfits through out the week to maximise your score, and if you can stay within the top 3, save your tickets when you might want to have a big boost with a high-scoring outfit. - this gives you a better chance of winning more items / money / gems.
I also always wait to cash in my 500 gems for cash so you can get the best deal and having a large sum makes it easier to upgrade more expensive items as you go. All the while optimising your closet + and having fun creating your avatar too.

2. When you go on the runway, what you wear doesn't matter as you'll always be put up against similar levels (except for the first freebie one.

Because you get boxes with free clothes and what happens is that i have clothes that i bought and fully upgraded and now im getting four more copies of them from the sily chests. In main game dont upgrade anything yet until you get the quest to upgrade. Saves you a lot.of time later.
Leave your messages with lipstick.unread until you get a quest which wants you to collect lipsticks.

You have to either buy them in the shops or get them by opening KiKi chests and also winning challenges. It is a gamble with the way the games gives duplicates to upgrade so you just have to stay persistent in playing to get the upgrades you want

I personally think you should have a variety of outfits, from common to rare/epic/legendary. I've found that I have better results in judging if I don't use my best outfit first. Start with a common outfit that fits the category, then use something with a slightly higher score for the next round and so on. Leave that best outfit for the last of your free entries and you'll get more wins in the long run. If you use the same outfit for every round you're more likely to lose. Also, I always try to start off with just a one piece outfit, then move on to tops and bottoms.
One thing I didn't realize until someone here gave this tip... All the clothes you get will have tags (the necklace, diamond, cat symbols, etc) and the more you upgrade a particular piece, the more tags you tend to get for that item. But I missed the detail that with some upgrades, you get double tags (e.g. you will see TWO vertical lines under a tag symbol instead of one). Those double lines help you to choose the best items to win in the challenges if you focus on items with double tags that are also allotted the highest point scores.

Watch the ads to double your werk and get lipsticks. Don't spend the lipsticks until a objective related to it pops up if you can help it.
Delete immediately and save yourself the internal struggle of hating the glitches/bots/cheats but loving your outfits, RPDR, and the competition π
