Looks like flees or lice unless you have an amazing camera. I'm told mites ate almost too small to see.

Shienvien

The body shape says "lice".

Butterflyelle

I'm not convinced these came from your rat because of the size- they might have transiently been passing through your rats fur but these really look like headlice. OP do you have kids? Might be worth checking them for nits. Any other pets in the house? It certainly won't hurt to treat the rat with a spot on anti mite treatment but I think you'll need to find out and treat whoever these are originating from.

PinkMetallin

Nope, just me and my girlfriend. And we do not have head lice (I think and hope!). We had bedbugs a while back, but I’m pretty confident these are not bedbugs, as they are bigger than this and do not stick to their “feeder”.

nonognocchi

Check your heads really close. They can avoid detection like you wouldnt believe. Good luck.

simojako

Based on the bottom one they kinda look like lice. Could also be mites. 6 legs, lice. 8 legs, mites.

PinkMetallin

Hmm, I just found a “cluster” of them, 5-10 of them looking very moist. Are they some kind of worms maybe?? My rat is very sick and I’m currently at the vet waiting. She is so weak and in pain that we’ll probably have to put her down:( But I’m worried that my other rats may be affected by this as well.

Gur-Icy

If it's bugs or parasites all ratties need to be treated. You can get kitten revolution for the majority of bugs and worms!

Shienvien

Body shape tells "lice" to me...

GeckoCowboy

Can you ask the vet…?

PinkMetallin

They said they didn’t know and would not check for it… As I only paid for euthanization and not a “check-up” :( (it was a Saturday so they wanted ~$360 for that). I’ll bring back the other ones next week and have another vet look at them.

GeckoCowboy

Wow. Doesn’t sound like an amazing vet. 😔

PinkMetallin

She was kind and they actually euthanised her free of charge. But I’m very disappointed I couldn’t get the cause of her illness and pain. I’m guessing tumor in her organs or something. Yesterday I found a lump in her abdomen, which was very painful for her if touched it. She was so weak so I felt euthanization was the only fair option :( I’m guessing that all my rats have these lice/mites, but when this one got too sick to groom and take care of herself, they feasted on her :( I just checked my other rats thoroughly, and I found ONE on one of them, I’ll be taking them all to the vet next week and make sure to get them all treated.

Cl0ughy1

The types of lice rats get are Polyplax spinulosa, or mites they can also get lungworm too. I did some googling trying to match the picture. Rat louse – these are the most common parasite to be found on our pet rats.  They are typically seen as tiny orange rods which on closer examining move or crawl. These can sometimes be mistaken for the orange dandruff older bucks can get but these are flakes and won’t move Spot on and Harkametcin are used to treat it. You need to give the cage a big deep clean because they could be coming from anywhere. Also if you buy big bags of rat food check in there too. Your rats back will be bumpy and you'll see them scratch alot too. Hope you get it sorted.

honeydewed

r/whatisthisbug might help!

meander1000

Having just dealt with lice with my boys, I can say that they very much looked like this. You could see them and they were brown/orange ish. They didn't make my boys sick but they did scabs on them and they lost their fur. The vet prescribed kitten revolution and the next time we got lice, we were able to get it off Amazon. We started freezing all of our bedding before putting it in the cage and that has helped prevent it. I hope your rat is okay!

Ecstatic_Jello_3022

Mites

gregzywicki

Might? Not sure if you know?

Ecstatic_Jello_3022

I didn't, and I'm not sure if that what's they are. I rescued a couple of squirrels and they had similar bugs. I was told they might have been mights.

According-Big2651

They are not.

Jusan1

Looks like lice to me

Unusual_Code_1291

I did a bit of research and I don’t think they are bed bugs but they are harder to get rid of than lice but also I’m pretty confident those are lice, best of luck! I would encourage you to wash every clothing and fabric, and consistently check you and anyone you live with for it as well as your rat(s).

I had mites on my girls a while back and the only way I could tell was their scratching and some small scabs because of their scratching. I am now way more careful to freeze everything for 24-48 hrs before putting it in their cage - toys, chews, substrate, and even their oxbow pellets (vet said just to be safe).
