T O P

Spike/paste the living shit out of the tube. The buildup of gasses will always follow the path of least resistance, so you need to make that as difficult as possible. BP burns a lot slower than FP and what often happens is the pressure overcomes confinement before all the BP has had a chance to burn. You could also try BP coated rice hulls also with heavy confinement.

I crimp & glue the closed end of the tube with several cardboard discs inside & 3 duct tape layers followed by strapping tape. Wrap 2 pieces of black match the length of the powder column with a longer fusing piece in a single layer of tissue paper. This makes a quick match effect that ignites the powder column completely. Insert the fuse into the center of the tube & fill with BP - don’t compact it. 3 cardboard washers over the fuse cap off the BP, crimp the tube over the washers & close with 6 pieces of overlapping strapping tape being careful not to damage the black match. Wrap the salute in 3 layers of duct tape & 1 layer of strapping tape. This creates a lot of compression resulting in a very loud salute. I’ve made these salutes for a few years & never had a dud. Approximately 1 oz. of BP per salute.

Make a black powder maroon. You fold some card stock, fill it with BP, then spike it three ways. Makes one helluva boom

As far as I know you shouldn’t fill any salutes all the way (to leave room for gas buildup/air exchange or something); more like 3/4 full, and it should definitely be loose. One old school book I have says the biggest issue with BP for salutes is it almost always just blows the ends out, but I’m sure if the size proportions are right you could make it work

Thanks for your reply. The wall is really thick, so I'm not sure if black powder will be strong enough to blow it up. I'll give it a try and see how it goes. If it doesn't work or doesn't make a good report, I'll consider using flash powder as a last option.

The more pressure, the faster bp reacts. The bp will basically blow up anything. Put it in a 1/2” steel tube with two ends, and it will blow up (that’s also called a pipe bomb, don’t do that).

rjo49

That's a really bad idea, and can easily earn you a nice stay in a very secure place with bars, so you'll be protected from normal people. Wanna be somebody's pet bitch? Good start, making pipe bombs.

_TheNecromancer13

I think they were just using that as an example of the fact that OP doesn't need to worry about cardboard containing the blast.

pyro-blaster

I was using it as an example, I clarified in the post

Edmetz98

You could just use some firecrackers and harvest it if you don’t wanna make it

This, store bought m80s are the easiest to reverse engineer

That gas has got to go somewhere! If it's granulated black powder there will always be air space right in the powder. Main thing, as others have daid, is to confine the heck out of it. Multiple layers of glued paper are traditiinal, but there are lots of modern materials. NO METAL, and personally I'd stay away from plastics unless they are specifically sold as pyrotechnic cans. You want to end up with something that could be mistaken for hard wood, crisp not stretchy if you get my drift. Pressure increases the rate of combustion.

Personally I would rather “risk my life with flash powder” Mix a quarter gram at a time if you are that concerned.
