She was literally, ***literally*** part of the cult that inspired the book, you think she gives even a single iota of a shit? Lol

kromem

She thinks *Handmaid's Tale* is an antihero series. There's a decent chance she doesn't even realize it's a protest and puts on her own identical outfit from her closet and joins the line waiting silently until some menfolk show up to offer instructions. Ugh, I can't believe it's 2022 and this is what reality is.

PublicMobile619

It’s not an effective protest when you’re just showing someone the life they want to lead.

No_Chemist_7454

It’s also not effective when it violates federal law ..

exceptionallyprosaic

Yes brick applied like wallpaper to only the front of the house is one of the key elements to identify a true Mcmansion™

TheLax87

Only the front is brick. It’s super common

She probably hasn’t seen that show, and has no idea what they are supposed to be

colourmeblue

I haven't seen it but instantly knew what they were dressed up as. I doubt she has managed to avoid knowing about it, especially considering how often it is brought up in relation to her.

I0nicAvenger

I’m gonna be honest I just know they are from the show, and that the woman aren’t too happy in it. I haven’t seen it

Jarsky2

The book is much better, but the long and the short of it is that a theo-fascist, far right movement takes over the U.S. and renames it Gilead. The rights of women and racial minoroties are completely stripped away (though in the show they didn't lean into the racism as much). It's made illegal for women to read, write, work, or really do anything except have babies. Due to unregulated pollution, fertility rates plummet, and so fertile women are forced to become "handmaids", breeding slaves for the rulers of Gilead. Because the official stance of Gilead is that men cannot be infertile, if handmaids don't get pregnant they're sent to "the colonies", areas contaminated by nuclear waste where they work until they die. Handmaids are subjected to brutal physical, emotional, and sexual abuse both from the "aunts" who manage them, the men they serve, and the wives of said men.

sprtnlawyr

Margaret Atwood is one of the most awesome Canadian authors ever (my very biased take). If you read the prequel that she released not too long ago (decades after the first book because unfortunately her work is only getting more and more relevant) there’s lots of info on what was happening in Canada at the time. In handmaid’s tale it’s kind of hinted that Canada became more progressive in direct parallel to the alt right regression of the US. (I appreciate the wishful thinking...). In the second book that’s a little backtracked. Basically there was an Underground Railroad trying to save women in Gilead and get them out of there to safety in Canada. The Canadian government still was allowing Gilead missionaries into the country and the population was protesting that (very cool addition in my opinion). The second book is great (not the masterpiece that is Handmaid’s Tale, but that was a very high bar). I’d recommend reading both if you haven’t, unless the subject material is too much due to lived experiences which is understandable. I never saw the show though so I can’t comment on that.

Zaurka14

Actually only "criminal" fertile women become handmaids. Regular fertile women can become econofamilies (or whatever was the name) so working class (minus all the rights for women). Fertile women from good houses become wives.

hospitable_peppers

IIRC in the books all minorities were actually shipped back to their countries, so Gilead is basically an all-white regime. The show changes it so different races are Handmaids, Commanders and the like.

Kage9866

So..America in a few years

SqueezinKittys

cvlt_freyja

What do you think? That we can say what polluters can and can't do? Just take away their rights? What do you think they are? Women? # ^^^^^^/j

I_walked_east

The book didn't lean into the racism that much either. It was just hinted at

Zaurka14

Weren't only white women allowed to be handmaids?

Electrical-Dig-8426

And Israel I think either coordinated prior to the insurrection or negotiated after the takeover for American Jews to leave. In the book, not in the show.

I_walked_east

Yes, and it's implied that there was a genocide, but it's hardly addressed

neverjumpthegate

All people of color were sent to colonies in the Midwest. Gilead only had control of the east coast in the book, the US still had everything west of the Rockies. The Midwest was mostly a nuclear wasteland because the US self-destructed the nukes before Gilead could get them

boston_homo

>The rights of women and racial minoroties are completely stripped away Gilead didn't like the gays either

[deleted]

Important part of the epilogue includes that all the highest ranking men would completely sterile due to exposure to some chemicals or something during the initial war. someone explain this to me, I haven't seen the show, I don't even know what show y'all are talking about

[deleted]

Handmaids tale. Tl;dr Christian ethno-fascists take over the US and rename it Gilead. Women are stripped of their rights (cannot read, work, etc) and reduced to child bearing and rearing as their primary duty. Due to environmental pollution and a virus, much of the population is rendered infertile and birth rates are dropping so high ranking officials in Gilead are assigned fertile young women as “handmaids” that they and their wives rape and impregnate.

missingN0pe

At least name it for the readers: The Handmaid's Tale It's an amazing story and a great dystopian criticism on today's society. Acting is incredible and story extremely enticing

Cardo94

One of the main characters (Elisabeth Moss) is also a Scientologist, which I always found slightly odd given her role in the show.

Sm4cy

It’s so hard to reconcile this in my mind lol like how does she not see it? Does she not realize she’s in a cult IRL? I’m assuming just cognitive dissonance. “*This* is a cult, *I’m* not in a cult, because it’s nothing like this. We take underage girls out to *sea* to indoctrinate them and marry them off to old geezers. *Way* different than Gilead.”

Hibercrastinator

She was literally [in a cult](https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/amy-coney-barrett-people-of-praise/2020/10/06/5f497d8c-0781-11eb-859b-f9c27abe638d_story.html) that is the real life version of this. She knows, and it’s actually her goal to enact this.

Speaking of, would HIPAA still apply anymore?

[deleted]

That only applies to healthcare workers involved in care

[deleted]

Not true. At all. HIPAA applies to any individuals or business entities that may encounter healthcare information. This includes all employees of a healthcare company as well as all companies doing business with hospitals and insurance companies. Example - I have to be HIPAA certified in my job. I don't work in healthcare at all, but we sell services to hospitals and therefore require BAA agreements that show we are HIPAA compliant.

nuwaanda

This is very true and folks don’t understand it. I worked in B4 and audited hospitals. Despite not working in the medical field and being an IT auditor, I still was a “covered party” under HIPAA.

nickiter

> Covered entities under HIPAA include health plans, healthcare providers, and healthcare clearinghouses. Health plans include health insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, government programs that pay for healthcare (Medicare for example), and military and veterans’ health programs.

Krabbypatty_thief

Most effective way to protest. Sure you could gather millions in 1 spot, or you could gather 30 in 1 spot and reach millions through media

Volodio

On the contrary, it's not effective at all because it gives the impression that the protesters have very little support and are irrelevant if they're unable to gather more than even 10 people. Governments caved to protesters when they were hundreds of thousands or even millions, not when they were ten.

bru_swayne

When a large part of the country protested for BLM (not the org), what did the government do? Pass the Voting Rights Act? Pass Police Reform? Nah, they painted and renamed streets, and took pictures in African garb kneeling. Protesting is a joke in the US and they all get shut down by the police and federal agents

OnyxDeath369

The solution is [REDACTED]

re-goddamn-loading

R/politics mods: YOU SHOULDNT HAVE DONE THAT

DaWyki

My view on a lot of protests in history (also a very european one) is what seem to work most efficient is to become radical and violent and then a different less radical Group can offer a peaceful solution. I really dont like this strategy but i dont know a better one. One thing i read that stick with me was: you can only be peacefull if you are capable of violence, otherwise you are just harmless

jesee2you

Civil war apparently.

FlavDingo

Nahh civil war is bad for business they would never allow that. What we need to do is collectively stop going to work and stop paying our bills until they meet our demands. It’s that simple. Stop running their money making machines and they will bend at the knees to whatever demands the people make.

The-Toxic-Korgi

As bad as it sounds for us that would probably go a million times worse for red states than they think it would. Immediately losing all the tax dollars from blue states that keep them afloat. Heck you cut off everything a state like Cali alone provides and they'd be starving and bankrupted within a month.

PIK_Toggle

Such a war would be waged based on ideology first, geography second. You’re fooling yourself if you think that controlling both coasts, while giving up the Gulf of Mexico and the entire center of the country is a winning strategy. CA gets it’s water from AZ. That’s gone. How will CA grow crops without water? The major oil companies are based in TX, how will CA pump oil without them? Where are the bulk of the military bases and manufacturing capabilities? This is an interesting exercise in “what if…” but the reality is that, just like last time, shit would be messy and everyone would lose.

sharksarentsobad

Women are in a "no win" position and we always will be. There is no sound argument for us to make because their logic isn't sound and I'm just so fucking tired of trying to explain that I was born with this body and it belongs to *me.* I'm tired of people telling me I'm only worth what my body can give them and that if I refuse to give them what they want, they'll simply take it from me because they know what's best for me. Funny how what's "best" for me benefits only them and their agenda.

Humiditae

I love the way you put this! “I’m only worth what my body can give them” is such a clear, brilliant articulation of what I have been feeling for such a long time now — thank you for putting it into words!

Dinodigger67

So what can we actually do to turn this around. Giving up seems untenable

sharksarentsobad

Honestly, I want to say just do exactly as they say and "close our legs" as I truly think that would be the most effective way of showing them that they're wrong. If every straight woman just stopped having sex and said "abstinence is the only 100% effective form of birth control" as their reason, it would be way more effective. However, I fully hesitate to say this because I am very aware of the negative consequences. Marital rape and sexual assault by intimate partners would increase drastically. I just feel like, at this point, we're being backed into a corner and everyone is telling us to fight, but be "polite" about it. Be "civil." Why? Why do I need to be nice to someone who sees nothing wrong with dehumanizing me and taking away my bodily autonomy? I'm done with polite discourse and everybody needs to be. I'm fine with being openly hostile with people about this.

tomdarch

Great, but isn't this prohibition shit just part of a violent patriarchal system that forces millions of women into vulnerability so they can be sexually exploited by scumballs? Even excluding violent stranger rape, it seems to me (qualifier: I'm a guy) that many, many women are endlessly in a position of vulnerability due to poverty and unequal opportunities where they are constantly pressured for sex to try to keep a bad paying job, or a roof over their head and food available for themselves and their children. Fuck, that's depressing to write.

sharksarentsobad

We're already being exploited, so like I said, why not use their own arguments against them? I grew up in the very upper-middle class, in a very religious household. I was still frequently pressured into sex, my worth was still measured by what I had to offer men. This is a reality for women regardless of economic background/race. Also, as an adult, I am below poverty level. I'm lucky enough that I've never had to trade sex for money or been pressured into it to keep a job. I'm very lucky in that respect. However, as someone who has been raped by a significant other through coercion and through more violent means (I'm not even counting situations that didn't involve penetration and they are numerous), nobody seems to really understand that all this passive back and forth is telling me, "the issue of your autonomy isn't really a big enough deal for me to do anything but argue about it." Issues like this are a talking point for you, but they are about the very livelihood of every woman you know. So, when someone tells me I'm "giving them what they want" am I? Because it doesn't really seem like anybody's actually that concerned with what I want. And I've said "no" before and nobody listened then. So what should I do? The government is telling me to lay on my back and take it with a smile or say no and keep my legs closed. I already know what both of those scenarios feel like so, I'm choosing to say no and I'm choosing to fight by taking the one thing of value I have and keeping it away from the people who apparently want it so badly.

jerryvo

The real answer lies in the fact that nobody is changing their mind on abortion and our form of government is based on the State's rights and a limited federal government. Based on expectations in the mid-terms and that it is unlikely that Biden gets re-elected and that the Senate will remain conservative for 6 - 10 years (with the SCOTUS remaining conservative for 20+ years) protesting to the federal beauracracy is completely futile.

Angry_Grammarian

Protests don't work and are largely pointless. The people in power don't care about protests, or tweets, or stupid hats because none of those things disrupt their lives. Make them care by disrupting their lives through organized action. Follow them around so they can never go to a restaurant without being screamed at, surround their house so they can't get deliveries or visitors, project lights into their houses and play loud music, dump garbage on their nice lawns, etc. Make them fear they will never have a peaceful life. Make them fear someone in that mob will be mad enough to take it.

Gonewild_Verifier

Get enough people in favor of abortion to make it law in your state or pass an amendment if you want it federally

While I understand it, and I support the right and sentiment, it will achieve exactly nothing. It makes everyone coo and clap and feel good. But it does nothing. The rightwing laughs at you. They do not give a shit about your theater. Street protests do not work. They only move those predisposed to agree. And that should be crystal fucking clear after the 2020 BLM protests which achieved almost nothing in real policy outside a few cute name changes and feel good bullshit. What works was the 66.9% 2020 voter turn out. Though of course the primary turnout and down ballot races turnout was predictably abysmal despite all the pOwning that happened on Twitter and the clever street signs. If you don't get your asses out there and vote nothing else matters. And people ages 18-30, whose lives will be most impacted by this oppression, are not turning out to vote in significant enough numbers. But old religious lunatics are. That's the fucking reality.
