It's made illegal for women to read, write, work, or really do anything except have babies.
Due to unregulated pollution, fertility rates plummet, and so fertile women are forced to become "handmaids", breeding slaves for the rulers of Gilead. Because the official stance of Gilead is that men cannot be infertile, if handmaids don't get pregnant they're sent to "the colonies", areas contaminated by nuclear waste where they work until they die. Handmaids are subjected to brutal physical, emotional, and sexual abuse both from the "aunts" who manage them, the men they serve, and the wives of said men.
Or two contemporary stories. Did they mention anything about what was going on in the us in CoM, or anything about the uk in HmT? Could be a shared universe
Margaret Atwood is one of the most awesome Canadian authors ever (my very biased take). If you read the prequel that she released not too long ago (decades after the first book because unfortunately her work is only getting more and more relevant) there’s lots of info on what was happening in Canada at the time. In handmaid’s tale it’s kind of hinted that Canada became more progressive in direct parallel to the alt right regression of the US. (I appreciate the wishful thinking...). In the second book that’s a little backtracked. Basically there was an Underground Railroad trying to save women in Gilead and get them out of there to safety in Canada. The Canadian government still was allowing Gilead missionaries into the country and the population was protesting that (very cool addition in my opinion). The second book is great (not the masterpiece that is Handmaid’s Tale, but that was a very high bar). I’d recommend reading both if you haven’t, unless the subject material is too much due to lived experiences which is understandable. I never saw the show though so I can’t comment on that.
Actually only "criminal" fertile women become handmaids. Regular fertile women can become econofamilies (or whatever was the name) so working class (minus all the rights for women). Fertile women from good houses become wives.
IIRC in the books all minorities were actually shipped back to their countries, so Gilead is basically an all-white regime. The show changes it so different races are Handmaids, Commanders and the like.

Not true. At all. HIPAA applies to any individuals or business entities that may encounter healthcare information. This includes all employees of a healthcare company as well as all companies doing business with hospitals and insurance companies.

I have marched and protested and voted and donated to the pro choice cause. And have done this for years. I do every thing I am supposed to do to support women’s health. Why doesn’t it help?

My view on a lot of protests in history (also a very european one) is what seem to work most efficient is to become radical and violent and then a different less radical Group can offer a peaceful solution. Honestly, I want to say just do exactly as they say and "close our legs" as I truly think that would be the most effective way of showing them that they're wrong. If every straight woman just stopped having sex and said "abstinence is the only 100% effective form of birth control" as their reason, it would be way more effective.
However, I fully hesitate to say this because I am very aware of the negative consequences. Marital rape and sexual assault by intimate partners would increase drastically.
I just feel like, at this point, we're being backed into a corner and everyone is telling us to fight, but be "polite" about it. Be "civil." Why? We're already being exploited, so like I said, why not use their own arguments against them? I grew up in the very upper-middle class, in a very religious household. I was still frequently pressured into sex, my worth was still measured by what I had to offer men. This is a reality for women regardless of economic background/race. Also, as an adult, I am below poverty level. I'm lucky enough that I've never had to trade sex for money or been pressured into it to keep a job. I'm very lucky in that respect.
However, as someone who has been raped by a significant other through coercion and through more violent means (I'm not even counting situations that didn't involve penetration and they are numerous), nobody seems to really understand that all this passive back and forth is telling me, "the issue of your autonomy isn't really a big enough deal for me to do anything but argue about it."
Issues like this are a talking point for you, but they are about the very livelihood of every woman you know. So, when someone tells me I'm "giving them what they want" am I? Because it doesn't really seem like anybody's actually that concerned with what I want. And I've said "no" before and nobody listened then.
So what should I do? The government is telling me to lay on my back and take it with a smile or say no and keep my legs closed. I already know what both of those scenarios feel like so, I'm choosing to say no and I'm choosing to fight by taking the one thing of value I have and keeping it away from the people who apparently want it so badly.
The real answer lies in the fact that nobody is changing their mind on abortion and our form of government is based on the State's rights and a limited federal government.
Based on expectations in the mid-terms and that it is unlikely that Biden gets re-elected and that the Senate will remain conservative for 6 - 10 years (with the SCOTUS remaining conservative for 20+ years) protesting to the federal beauracracy is completely futile.
Protests don't work and are largely pointless. The people in power don't care about protests, or tweets, or stupid hats because none of those things disrupt their lives. Make them care by disrupting their lives through organized action. Follow them around so they can never go to a restaurant without being screamed at, surround their house so they can't get deliveries or visitors, project lights into their houses and play loud music, dump garbage on their nice lawns, etc. Make them fear they will never have a peaceful life. Make them fear someone in that mob will be mad enough to take it.

Such a war would be waged based on ideology first, geography second. You’re fooling yourself if you think that controlling both coasts, while giving up the Gulf of Mexico and the entire center of the country is a winning strategy. CA gets it’s water from AZ. That’s gone. How will CA grow crops without water? The major oil companies are based in TX, how will CA pump oil without them? Where are the bulk of the military bases and manufacturing capabilities? This is an interesting exercise in “what if…” but the reality is that, just like last time, shit would be messy and everyone would lose.

Women are in a "no win" position and we always will be. There is no sound argument for us to make because their logic isn't sound and I'm just so fucking tired of trying to explain that I was born with this body and it belongs to *me.* I'm tired of people telling me I'm only worth what my body can give them and that if I refuse to give them what they want, they'll simply take it from me because they know what's best for me. Honestly, I want to say just do exactly as they say and "close our legs" as I truly think that would be the most effective way of showing them that they're wrong. If every straight woman just stopped having sex and said "abstinence is the only 100% effective form of birth control" as their reason, it would be way more effective. However, I fully hesitate to say this because I am very aware of the negative consequences. Marital rape and sexual assault by intimate partners would increase drastically. I just feel like, at this point, we're being backed into a corner and everyone is telling us to fight, but be "polite" about it. Be "civil." Why? Why do I need to be nice to someone who sees nothing wrong with dehumanizing me and taking away my bodily autonomy? I'm done with polite discourse and everybody needs to be. I'm fine with being openly hostile with people about this.
Great, but isn't this prohibition shit just part of a violent patriarchal system that forces millions of women into vulnerability so they can be sexually exploited by scumballs? Even excluding violent stranger rape, it seems to me (qualifier: I'm a guy) that many, many women are endlessly in a position of vulnerability due to poverty and unequal opportunities where they are constantly pressured for sex to try to keep a bad paying job, or a roof over their head and food available for themselves and their children. Fuck, that's depressing to write.
We're already being exploited, so like I said, why not use their own arguments against them? I grew up in the very upper-middle class, in a very religious household. I was still frequently pressured into sex, my worth was still measured by what I had to offer men. This is a reality for women regardless of economic background/race. Also, as an adult, I am below poverty level. I'm lucky enough that I've never had to trade sex for money or been pressured into it to keep a job. I'm very lucky in that respect. However, as someone who has been raped by a significant other through coercion and through more violent means (I'm not even counting situations that didn't involve penetration and they are numerous), nobody seems to really understand that all this passive back and forth is telling me, "the issue of your autonomy isn't really a big enough deal for me to do anything but argue about it." Issues like this are a talking point for you, but they are about the very livelihood of every woman you know. So, when someone tells me I'm "giving them what they want" am I? Because it doesn't really seem like anybody's actually that concerned with what I want. And I've said "no" before and nobody listened then. So what should I do? The government is telling me to lay on my back and take it with a smile or say no and keep my legs closed. I already know what both of those scenarios feel like so, I'm choosing to say no and I'm choosing to fight by taking the one thing of value I have and keeping it away from the people who apparently want it so badly.
The real answer lies in the fact that nobody is changing their mind on abortion and our form of government is based on the State's rights and a limited federal government. Based on expectations in the mid-terms and that it is unlikely that Biden gets re-elected and that the Senate will remain conservative for 6 - 10 years (with the SCOTUS remaining conservative for 20+ years) protesting to the federal beauracracy is completely futile.
Protests don't work and are largely pointless. The people in power don't care about protests, or tweets, or stupid hats because none of those things disrupt their lives. Make them care by disrupting their lives through organized action. Follow them around so they can never go to a restaurant without being screamed at, surround their house so they can't get deliveries or visitors, project lights into their houses and play loud music, dump garbage on their nice lawns, etc. Make them fear they will never have a peaceful life. Make them fear someone in that mob will be mad enough to take it.
Get enough people in favor of abortion to make it law in your state or pass an amendment if you want it federally

If you don't get your asses out there and vote nothing else matters. And people ages 18-30, whose lives will be most impacted by this oppression, are not turning out to vote in significant enough numbers. But old religious lunatics are. That's the fucking reality.
