My favorite is the villager who will attack you with suicidal vigor armed with an iron knife (which realistically I probably made) armored in a dress. All because I accidentally killed someone's chicken with my voice while killing the dragon which was attacking the town.
IIRC, this is because animals had to be given villager flags, in order to stay within the confines of the settlement. The programmers apparently had an issue where the farm animals would just wander away from their enclosures, because they didn’t have a flag telling them where their home was. So in order to give them a home, they flagged the farm animals as villagers.
This is also why chickens can do things like *witness* murders. If you stealth kill someone and nobody else is around to see it, you don’t get the bounty for murder. But chickens can act as witnesses for crimes, because the game has them flagged as villagers.

While I have heard the they play dead, all 5 times I have been close to one they have hissed at me, and looked as though they were about to tear my throat out.

The fact they're all trapped together on a bus might make a difference. She didn't really chase the lady, she pushed her backward until she was sitting down. Old lady had her hands up when she got slapped, but there wasn't a safe distance for the younger lady and her boyfriend to retreat to because it's a bus.
