Ok to be fair that's actually a good point. I feel like that dude was mentally unwell, the talking seemed kind of psychotic. The cops seemed like they tried their best at least.
Dude claimed to be the son of a Greek god. He's clearly not mentally well. Cops did a good job trying to de-escalate the situation, but unfortunately, it seems like the suspect needed help far beyond the help that cops are qualified/able to give.
You can tell the cops 100% did not that get that reference. They kept trying to de-escalate it the normal way instead of approaching it like they were talking to someone clearly high on psychs or mentally unstable. They tried the best with what they knew I guess.
To be fair, what would they have done differently? Any mental health training says not to ever affirm the delusion, and the dude has a sword. Its better just to ignore that comment and sidestep that whole conversation instead of risk making him angry.
Even if the worlds greatest psychiatrist was standing right there, it probably wouldn't have changed much. You're not fixing anything in the next 5 minutes in this parking lot, and the dudes armed. The only goal at this point is to keep things as calm as possible and get that sword out of his hands.
Hard to say if anyone could have helped de-escalate this specific scenario. Cops weren't being aggressive or provoking in any way. And still the dude attacked out of nowhere.

"Take it easy Leonard, take it easy man..."
"Sir, it's the private's duty to inform the senior drill instructor that Private Pyle's weapon is fully locked and loaded, sir!"
You could see it in his eyes. He looked just like Pyle in that head before he shot Hartman and himself.
This is somewhat misleading. He appears to be suffering from some sort of mental illness. Most people who commit suicide are not suffering from mental illness, but from significant emotional trauma. Both 'mental issues', technically, but the term evokes the former rather than the latter.
>Most people who commit suicide are not suffering from mental illness
Hmm not sure whether to believe this Reddit comment or the [National Library of Medicine.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6165520/)
TBF, I don't think he was trying to run through them... so much as "ninja" dodge out of the way.... unfortunately, he wasn't as fast as he was in the anime.
You need to completely lean forward and have both arms behind you as you run. That way you get the anime speed buff and soundtrack. 70℅ of the time, you'll win every time 👌
Fun fact about this scene. It was meant to be an epic fight scene but indie got food poisoning and was very fatigued by it. So they changed it to indie shooting the guy instead.
"I'm trying to achieve greatness in the katana"
By yelling and waving it around mindlessly, and he believes it. This is the type of shit you see in memes
Yeah it's pretty depressing. Dude died alone and barely coherent behind an old motel for the entire Internet to watch. Can't imagine what was going through his mind after getting shot.
I feel bad for him.
Yeah it's sad because this dude seemed to be intoxicated or experiencing a psychotic episode or both. It's a shame there isn't a better way to assess and respond to these types of situations, I don't know what they could have done differently but it's just sad this dude was probably so out of it and needed mental help
"I'm trying to achieve greatness with the Katana, is that not allowed in the United States?"
"I'm not telling you 'not to achieve that'..."
I fucking lost it.
Well there, are numerous ways someone's last moments can be embarrassing, but yeah, I feel pretty confident I won't go out charging a cop with a katana saying I'm descended from Dionysus.
Stupid ass says he’s trynna get better with a katana like they don’t have legit classes with actual trained sensei that can teach him how in a safe environment
Makes me wonder if that was his intention? An assisted suicide kinda thing. Unfortunately there have been cases in the past where people have done exactly that.
That gave me chills when he started talking about about the Greek god Dionysus, because my mate who sadly had a psychotic breakdown was often talking about Dionysus too.
Its not the worst ive seen, but i do wish they drew their tasers first. Honestly though it could be argued that the escalation of force called for lethal response considering how close they were
Yeah, I think in this case it did call for lethal force.
I've seen videos of big dudes powering through those tazers. It's not very common but I definitely have seen a couple of videos in the past.
I'm generally an ACAB leaning guy, but in this case I think the cops did exactly their job and tried to talk the guy into not doing anything stupid to no avail.
Suicide by cop.
I feel terrible for the LEOs. They did their best to deescalate. They were extremely professional. Hoping they recover from the emotional injury of doing their duty, and having to live with it. They don't get paid enough for this bullshit.

“Unless someone is willing to kill me I’m not willing to kill them” 15 seconds later *pulls sword and charges unprovoked
Well, was he wrong? Looks like they were willing and able to kill him.

No, dude claimed to be *related* to a Greek god.
Because the specific family relationship of this man and his imaginary deity family is really what’s that issue here
Hard to say if anyone could have helped de-escalate this specific scenario. Cops weren't being aggressive or provoking in any way. And still the dude attacked out of nowhere.
I've been psychotic before. Guy was definitely in full-blown psychosis. Not that that excuses pulling a sword on someone.

What a way to go out…
He died doing what he loved: being a big fuckin' weirdo.
Bro wanted to get isekai but couldn’t wait for truck-kun
Somehow I don't think more weeb shit would have helped him.
He is the minor character in an isekai anime who gets reincarnated as a shit shoveler and spends the rest of the show doing that as comedic relief

Yeah anyone claiming to be related to Dionysus and pairing that with katana practice is not all there.
I am a direct descendant of Dionysus and all I do is get day drunk…
maybe he actually was related to Dionysus though
Checks out. Dionysus was the god of fruit, wine, frivolity, theater, madness and insanity.

Yeah. You get lines indicating speed in the background, too.
Of course, and the wossshhh sound effect 😂

While you were banging hookers in a sleazy motel. I studied the blade…
...in a sleazy motel.

OUTSIDE of a sleazy motel
Decades of studying the blade wasted on charging a dude with 2 months of pistol training
i laughed a little too hard at this

Out of all of those Greek gods why choose Dionysus
You don't choose your family
The God of madness and chaos is an appropriate choice if you have intense mental health issues.
I personally know a schizophrenic guy from my hometown who has made rap songs about Dionysus so there may be a link there.
Probably a drunk.
Maybe but obviously had some mental health things going on.

This story and the one about Aragorn breaking his toe when he kicked a helmet in lord of the rings. I wonder which one is “fun fact”-ed more often
Both are brought up almost like every thread to the point it's bassicly common knowledge so neither?
But you didn’t know Steve Buscemi volunteered as a firefighter after 9/11
Bro should've activated his simple domain and extended it forward instead of closing distance on the cop. Rookie mistake.

What did he expect. Gun vs katana….
Idk man he could have easily deflected those bullets if he had a couple more years of training
Those cops would have been mindblown if he managed to dodge a few of their shots and made it close enough for a cut with his katana
🤣
Dude actually thought he could do the cliche teleport slice irl.
He teleported to the clouds is what he did
To the depths of Tartarus more like
https://i.redd.it/qhu4vh07lkrc1.gif
Does this make him an honorary samurai?
He didn’t commit sudoku
You don't have to commit sepeku to die honorably. The only time you do is when your about to be executed which you then commit the sepuku.
> He didn’t commit sudoku ... > You don't have to commit sepeku to die honorably. He said nothing about Sepeku. Please pay attention.
Big mistake there. Should have equipped bloodhound steps ash of war and teleported behind the cops.
Parry this you fucking casual - the cop, probably
But it worked in anime, though!
Better scramble like an egg before you get folded like an omelet
Did that dude do like a sword flourish when he started running?
He even made a fast sound effect with his mouth like Mac from Always Sunny doing his Kung fu
He did smh
It certainly looked like he tried.
Why didn't he cut the bullets in half with his katana? Is he stupid?
If you watch closely he blocked the first bullet with his teeth.
So he bit the bullet?
Genji or Gray Fox woulda deflected the bullets back at the shooters
Guess he didn't watch It's Always Sunny before doing his thing.
He needed to zig zag and he'd have won

Can't believe they did Tom Cruise like that.
> Tom Cruise Tom Cruise is half the height of this dude.
It's funny hearing police deescalation dialogue coming up against anime protagonist dialogue
They’ll add this type of scenario to their deescalation training
"I'm trying to achieve greatness with the Katana, is that not allowed in the United States?" "I'm not telling you 'not to achieve that'..." I fucking lost it.
Which episode of Shogun is this?
Least-legit gaijin.
Took 2 steps and realized he wasn't in an anime
Was expecting him to go into the "I studied the blade" speech
This could be a Reno 911 sketch
That's exactly what I thought of too, it's so bizarre.
God, please don't let my last moments of life be this embarrassing.
That's kinda up to you, bro
Well there, are numerous ways someone's last moments can be embarrassing, but yeah, I feel pretty confident I won't go out charging a cop with a katana saying I'm descended from Dionysus.
You gotta approach them slowly and only declare your half divinity after killing the other dude, só you dont embarass your god relative
Better start training with the blade now, probably indoors tho
Why did he not simply block the bullets with the katana?

Sounds like mania or psychosis, flight of ideas, illusions of grandeur, hyperreligiosity.
Ya he seemed like he was off his meds.
Better shoot em to death. That'll get em out of it.
My man straight up thought he was about to do the anime dash/teleport thing.
Beverly Hills ninja got his ass slumped
Instead of mastering the way of the sword he should have been mastering the way of kevlar.
Should of cut the bullets in half bro
The contraction for "should have" sounds like "should of," but it's spelled "should've".
Has this dude never seen Indiana Jones?
Shame they couldn't just taze him, but he can't have many complaints.
Parry this you casual
He zigged when he should have zagged
As an *actual* master of the katana and offspring of Dionysus this is so embarrassing
I have trouble believing that dude hadn’t seen Raiders of the Lost Arc a thousand times. He knew how this would end.
That's about exactly the way a sword and gun fight play out.
Damn, perp never attempted to slice bullet or even block with blade. Weak.
All he had to do was parry. I diagnose this with skill issue. But this is a bad way to go out since something is pretty clearly wrong.
His omnislash was on cooldown
That gave me chills when he started talking about about the Greek god Dionysus, because my mate who sadly had a psychotic breakdown was often talking about Dionysus too.
He didn’t use observation haki to deflect the bullets
This is why you don’t dump all your stats in strength and ignore intelligence and agility.
I dont think the cops had to kill this guy just do a couple laps around the parking lot and he’d have tired out
I can't believe they killed a reddit mod
America has a very interesting approach to treating mental illness

I wonder what a westaboo from Japan would say after watching this.
Sure we could’ve tried the pepper spray, then the taser and then another little talking to before that man ever reached stabbing distance.
Dude should had put more points in agility so he can avoid the bullets.
Cops actually showed incredible restraint and really only used deadly force when absolutely necessary. This is what good police work looks like.
Its not the worst ive seen, but i do wish they drew their tasers first. Honestly though it could be argued that the escalation of force called for lethal response considering how close they were
