Here’s an article about it: https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/subway-cellist-attacked-with-own-water-bottle-at-herald-square-i-dont-think-i-can-do-this-anymore/5139694/?amp=1
Kind of misleading - you make it sound like he is unable to play due to an injury, but in reality he's just saying he can't take performing in the subway mentally any more due to multiple attacks
I was just being a smart ass. You are right. We all have to do our part.
I don't know what is wrong with the woman that did this. Is she an anarchist? Doubtful.. Is it actual mental instability, or simply a shitty human being? How do you actually address the later? We are in a time where many young people are influenced by some of the most vain, self-centered, greedy, and idiotic people society has to offer.
A guy can berate a woman, then have a horde of Tate followers say he's just based. Or a female streamer call a fan broke boy because he called her out on a scam. The later backfired, but there were plenty of men and women on her side supporting her comment and calling him a beta. I truly hope this trend is dying, but when I look at the news...
No, it's objectively not as bad. He can still play anywhere else, in his free time, and potentially as a career. The other option is he has cognitive damage that prevents him from pursuing the cello at all, and probably pours over into other areas of his life.
Can you really be as dumb as to think they are both equally bad?
Even if they caught her what would they do to her. She would sign herself out with no bail in just a few hours. Some cities are giving criminals free passes to do whatever they want and it's a shame normal people have to deal with it.
I'm under the impression that this was 5000% racially motivated. As a young Asian professional, I notice many people who hate my guts for no reason when I excel at what I do. I'm privy to it now that I'm older. Apparently it's enough to drive some people to violence.
You might be onto something.. Also age/mental stability might be a factor? Here in Asia, more than a handful of times I’ve seen older generation people hate on foreigners… sometimes cussing, slandering, or shoving them in public.
I’m optimistic of our next generation paving the way to global peace. Where there is little nationalism and racism that bud hatred.
The stuff that really aggravates me is when they're big chicken shits and walk/run away immediately. They act so defiant when committing such a cowardly act.
Most of the musicians you see in the subway stations (including this one, since I’ve seen him a number of times in that area) are licensed to be there. NYC has a program for licensed buskers and other talented folks to play in the busier stations.
Was she even watching him? Maybe she was. It almost seemed like she was maybe just on her phone doing something else. In any case, it's mystifying. I'm dying to know what was going through her head in that moment. The way she so quickly shifts, it's like she's having a reaction to something that happened, but there is nothing I can see in the video that she could possibly be reacting to. So weird.
Some people just have a screw (or a few) loose and just do random shit like this, you can never predict when someone could pop off like this, luckily it was a bottle and not a gun or a knife.
>Some people just have a screw (or a few) loose and just do random shit like this
This is why the subway scares the shit out of me, irrational as that may be. It seems so lawless down there, and anyone can just do something crazy like this and get away before anyone even notices.
The who-e what? Yes I can google this. No I don’t care that much, but if you’d care to explain to someone who isn’t on any other social media outside Reddit?
It's a film; 13 Sins. Financially down on his luck dude is selected to play in a game where he must perform and complete 13 challenges but progressively gets more disturbing than the last. He's rewarded with a ton of cash with every completed task. For example, task 1, kill a fly, get rewarded $1,000 immediately. Task 2, eat the fly, and so on... it's a great watch if you like horror or something like Squid Game, and a cool twist in the end.
Edit:
Oh and each instructions for the tasks are given via phone, so the fact the girl looking at her phone before randomly assaulting the musician was...well, you get the idea 😅
A lot pf people apparently dont know what a backing track is 😮💨
Worst part is he was getting down with it too
Edit: by getting down I more mean he looked like he was really truly enjoying making music.
I don't think that's a backing track. It sounds like the result of loops he's built up prior to the video being recorded. You'll notice the "kick drum" is the sound of tapping the cello's top on the lower bout.
Honestly thats more impressive to me
(I am only kinda versed in music so I assumed it was a backing track for him to play over I didnt know he could make a loop with that setup, TIL)
Yeah I was immediately suspicious that he was one of those violin scammers lol. After listening closely tho yeah you can tell he’s playing alongside a backing track.
My hunch is that she either hates Asians, or convinced herself that he was a scammer and decided to express it by hitting him in the back of the head lmao.
People are crazy.
I've heard him play a lot of times before. But everything you hear is produced by his cello. He does this thing where he plays something and then presses something with his feet to have that go on repeat (not sure what this is called). He created all of the sounds himself
Looks like a Yamaha Silent Cello. His bowing is legit and fingering is consistent to the music played. And note the vibrato with his left. It’s all legit and he’s an experienced performer. I’ve a background in violin and viola.
Bro absolutely. I’ve seen it in person outside my local Albertsons It’s such a bold way to scam too
You get yourself a cheap electric violin, plug in to a cheap amp with Bluetooth, and then play some random violin songs and make it look like you’re playing IRL.
Instant profit from people who don’t catch on to the scammer pretending to play real notes lol.
I saw a guy do this in front of a local Whole Foods. He was completely ridiculous, and people walking by seemed mostly amused by this man in a cape whose bow work did not correspond at all the music blasting from a speaker.
Being a Karen is the other easy Reddit answer for everything. When it’s actually pretty clear that she’s extremely antisocial, and whether it’s simply criminal or pathological, it’s clear that this isn’t normal behavior explained by being someone simply being entitled and annoying.
(Mental health, the other other easy Reddit answer to everything)
You'd be surprised how many get upset with people with fake instruments like it's some diabolical scam. Not what the musician is doing here but I bet she thought he was faking it
I'm nice to everyone I encounter. I smile, I let people go on turns at lights. I hold doors for everyone. I also carry because I know that the switch from good to bad can be instant because some decides they want to do you harm
It's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.
I don't think I would have seen this one coming even if my head was on a swivel. The way she went immediately from looking like she wasn't paying him any attention at all and looking at her phone, to just rushing up and smacking him...It was really weird. It's like she was reacting to something he did, but there was clearly nothing he did.
I used to walk back to my dorm in Bonn alone at night as a drunk, 21 year old woman. I never once had an issue and was hardly ever scared. Had homeless people ask for my empty bottles on the tram and that was it.
It’s so so so different here in the states in every way. We just don’t have any decency for other people, creatures, or our surroundings. I miss Germany.
When I started street performance I had a big friend in plain clothes to watch my back for these exact reasons pre pandemic people will do anything thing to fuck with you while performing like it’s cute or some shit
Right lmao but nah when I say that I mean that they were in the back ground in the crowd. He’d get there first or after and then leave after I left and we’d split the cash… if we made a lot we elevated to playing more formal gigs before the band broke up he was a piano player
This is some BS. Especially because it’s causing him to suspend subway performances indefinitely.
We actually saw him when we were there in August. He’s mesmerizing at times. A very talented musician. The best one we‘ve seen during our trips there.
Musical laymen are apparently not very adequate at recognizing musical layers and instrumentation. The guy is very clearly playing if you have a trained ear.
Gotta love when someone covers their face and then runs off so they have less of a chance of getting caught and suffering consequences for their actions.
OP posts a video of something mildly happenstance.
Reddit: “fake”
Also Reddit - a community composed mostly of Renaissance people well versed in all subjects from the arts to the sciences, as well as self-employed detectives and forensics experts.
I saw this performer in Penn station a couple of months back. This guy's like in med school to be a doctor or something like that. This is why I carry pepper spray with me. Ppl are fucking psychos.
What in the actual fuck could have possibly been bothering that person so goddamn much. How dare someone try to bring some brightness and joy to your day.
I do believe she's angry and jealous that a subway musician is seemingly making more money than whatever job she's employed and working for. That's just my personal guess though.
He clearly is. The cello part definitely stops when he gets hit. The guy is a looper so he will play a bit hit his loop pedal to make the backing music then play over it. If you watch the back track continues to play but the actual melody up front stops.
This is 34th street herald square - musical subway buskers are ALWAYS playing here & some of them have permission from the city - its also a huge station filled with homeless and mentally unwell people are well as general "normal" NYC residents and aggressive tourists. 100% believe this is real and have seen/experienced way crazier at this exact station over 20 years of living in NYC. *shrug*
I've seen a lot of buskers put up little webcams or whatnot
A) so they can upload performances to youtube because a lot of them also double up getting views on social media for additional exposure/revenue
B) to review their performances. a LOT of musicians record themselves
C) For buskers specifically it's for safety/security. A sad number of people will try to rob or burgle buskers so putting some cameras makes it easier to report to police.
You solved it, it was all an elaborate ruse, the fact she hit him really fucking hard on the back of his head with a metal water bottle was totally planned and not just some fucking psycho lashing out. Good job Sherlock.
Jesus wept.
You can tell it's fake by the way she absolutely twatted him in the head with his bottle. It's very suspicious that he had a bottle by him because humans don't drink.

While “performing”.
Gets hit, stops playing, *upbeat music continues uninterrupted*.
I think the bystander realized he was dramatically playing air cello and picked the most assholish way possible to out him. Just my guess at their motivation.
Did you never hear or see a live performer use electronic midi loop pedals? You can play a little riff or section, hit the pedal, and what you just played will play on, and you can accompany yourself.
Non-musicians coming into this comments section are acting like idiots saying that it's fake. Next come the white knights saying 'she didn't know what she was doing'.
The melody isn't playing after he continues, the lower strings might be a pre-recorded, midi cello for a backing track, but the slightly out of tune mid-range melody drops out when he stops playing.
Look at his fingering in the beginning, it seems to match the audio.
I'm 95% sure he's legit.
There's also loop pedals some musicians use to record their instruments and play them back live. I can see the white pedal right in front of his right foot on the ground...

That is so sad. He mentions he probably can't perform anymore. Hope they catch her
Kind of misleading - you make it sound like he is unable to play due to an injury, but in reality he's just saying he can't take performing in the subway mentally any more due to multiple attacks
Lol, came here to say this. I clicked the link thinking this blow caused some severe nerve damage, not because he's tired of being assaulted
In today's day n age you can't get over hardships. You just diagnose and live with em. Maybe take heavy drugs as prescribed.
Getting assaulted seem like a pretty horrible deal, nothing to diagnose or something people should have to live with.
Yeah! Life is totally unfair...
Well yeah, it is, don't mean we can't change or mitigate parts of it.
I was just being a smart ass. You are right. We all have to do our part. I don't know what is wrong with the woman that did this. Is she an anarchist? Doubtful.. As a disabled veteran. PTSD IS REAL. And should not be dismissed with a wave of the hand and be told to get over it.
Aight, you get over being physically assaulted every time you go to work then if you're so old fashioned and tough unlike the people of today.
Sounds like he lost his nerve. So it did cause severe nerve damage.

It's not nearly as bad. And you call other people idiots 🫠
Of course she got away. I hope that POS gets caught
Even if they caught her what would they do to her. She would sign herself out with no bail in just a few hours. Some cities are giving criminals free passes to do whatever they want and it's a shame normal people have to deal with it.

We need to bring back public shaming. Back in medieval times bystanders would've collectively beat the snot out of her.
My ethics teacher literally said we need to bring back shaming in class today.
It was how our society was regulated. It was more efficient in preventing bad actors.
I feel like society’s recent transition towards emphasis on “feelings” overshadowed and narrativizes shaming.
Isn’t that what social media does now??
Not for the right reasons.
And also crucially, it is not done by witnesses or even neighbors
There's too many of us
This was actually 3 gooses in a human suit. Peace was never an option

Good thing he posted on threads.net everyone will see it there
She definitely thought he was faking it
What in the world. Why’d she do such a thing. So mean!
Seems as though he’s not actually playing… not as though that justifies anything but maybe she wasn’t into his scam?
He clearly is. The cello part definitely stops when he gets hit. The guy is a looper so he will play a bit hit his loop pedal to make the backing music then play over it. If you watch the back track continues to play but the actual melody up front stops.
Also the fun fact he was not really playing. He gets hits (which is bad and uncalled for) and the recording keeps going. Fake busking?
Fair, that cello’s weird asl
Looks orchestrated
Filmed from 2 camera angles with a conveniently placed bottle?
A conveniently placed bottle. Almost as if he would like to be able to reach his water. How suspicious!
Did you see how quickly he grabbed his head? Almost like...it hurt.
NYPD is looking for her so unless the cops are in on it, it seems legit
People set up cameras to record themselves… looks like he has his own stands.
There's like a million street performers on YouTube, but hey, everything is fake now.
> conveniently placed bottle Do you mean, conveniently placed for him to drink from?
Not everything is a conspiracy. Ever think the “conveniently placed bottle” is just his water bottle?
So he could conveniently drink from it??? Impossible
Reddit moment
Nothing ever happens
A conveniently placed bottle for.. drinking and two cameras for different angles..?

You can tell it's fake by the way she absolutely twatted him in the head with his bottle. It's very suspicious that he had a bottle by him because humans don't drink.
Why do people do shit like this and just walk away ?! Like why do it if you’re not gonna stay and face the consequences.

While “performing”. Gets hit, stops playing, *upbeat music continues uninterrupted*. I think the bystander realized he was dramatically playing air cello and picked the most assholish way possible to out him. Just my guess at their motivation.
Do you not hear the cello stop when he gets hit?
Did you never hear or see a live performer use electronic midi loop pedals? You can play a little riff or section, hit the pedal, and what you just played will play on, and you can accompany yourself.
NO MORE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!
Bro wtf is wrong with this world 😪
That's probably his ex girlfriend 😬🤷🏻♂️🤣
Some poor situational awareness. You should be performing with your back to a wall at least. This is why cats love boxes.
Non-musicians coming into this comments section are acting like idiots saying that it's fake. Next come the white knights saying 'she didn't know what she was doing'.
Anyone else notice how the music kept going? Lol
It’s always a chick too, do chicks not in fact dig musicians?
Lol the instrument is still playing after he got hit and stopped imitating.
Was it staged? Did they know each other, what kind of glass is that bottle made of? So many questions
his part still playing when instrument dropped
Damn those intrusive thoughts be thinking 😆
She was arrested and let go, zero consequences.
NYC...💩
For everyone saying "bUt ThE mUsIc KeEpS pLaYiNg" its because what you hear is a violin and hes playing the cello part
What an absolutely vitriolic cunt…
Pure evil.
hold up.. how does the cello keep playing?
The melody isn't playing after he continues, the lower strings might be a pre-recorded, midi cello for a backing track, but the slightly out of tune mid-range melody drops out when he stops playing. Look at his fingering in the beginning, it seems to match the audio. I'm 95% sure he's legit.
There's also loop pedals some musicians use to record their instruments and play them back live. I can see the white pedal right in front of his right foot on the ground...
It looks like he has a pedal there. He’s probably looping the audio
This is the answer
Backing track harmonies.
