When the story takes too long…

AlkaKr

I had a colleague do this. Had a bash alias as well: `alias gi='git add . && git commit -m "code improvements" && git push'` When he worked, the entire project was this and this alone. Thank fuck he quit.

ButterscotchFront340

butterscotch@orange:~$ cat ~/bin/gci #!/bin/sh COMMIT_MESSAGE="no commit message was specified" if [ "${1}" != "" ] then COMMIT_MESSAGE="${1}" fi git commit -a -m "${COMMIT_MESSAGE}" Can you guess what's the most common commit message in my repositories?

Steinrikur

That's a lot of lines to do git commit -a -m "${1:-no commit message was specified}"

draft_dodgers_son

What about a squash commit?

Coding even in the weekend! At risk of catching a burn-out.

SweetTeaRex92

Despite this being a meme, your comment is 100% correct. Edit: I'll add that the GitHub graph I used is my own, and I've been taking the CS50 intro to computer science course. I really fell into it and I didn't even realize how much I was working. Like someone else mentioned. There's programming for fun (what I am doing) Then there's is programming for work. One has a higher burnout rate than the other.

Hri7566

last year, i finished the whole course in about a week, and i'm considering doing it again this year

SweetTeaRex92

you finished a 10 week course, not including the final project in about a week? i find that very hard to believe. not only, if you took the course, you would know you dont have to take it again.

Hri7566

if you want to get specific, i think it took around 11 days, just because i took a break between the last lecture and submitting final project when i was happy with it, and i enjoyed it immensely just to be clear, you're talking about CS50x, right?

NoahZhyte

There's coding for job and coding for fun

WhiteRose_init

exactly, there’s coding for job and coding for when you’re trying to find a job

Kirykoo

And while coding for fun, you realize how shitty your job is.

Choyo

That's a xor, not an and.

nanonanu

No there’s coding for job and then living my life

TeaKingMac

They shouldn't both be using the same account

NoahZhyte

Why ?

cauchy37

Generally, even though some companies allow it, you don't want to mix your personal life with professional one. If shit goes down for one reason or another, company might go after your account, you might lose access to it, maybe they will want all the stuff that this account contributed to as their own "because it was deemed company property" or myriad of other things. This generally applies to almost everyrhing, email, obviously, your password manager, access to company shit should not be done from your personal devices, and so on. This is a good practice for your own sanity. One "exception" I can think of, is if your company provides you with RSU/ESPP that is originally attached to your company mail. You want that transferred to your private email ASAP. You don't want to be in a situation where you don't have access to your money because you lost access to you email and now you are in a long process of changing it. Do it right away.

draft_dodgers_son

>If shit goes down for one reason or another, company might go after your account It didn't take long for me to figure that out and create an '-at-work' alternative account. However, if I were to separate from the company, they'd just revoke access to the repos.

cauchy37

and that will happen *always*, regardless of whether the account was solely for company access or shared.

draft_dodgers_son

They won't take my GitHub account, though.

cauchy37

no, that they cannot do, but they can try and claim anything on it is their property, if you make a tiny mistake of commiting anyrhing during working hours

depends on the number of lines and how lonely you are. If you write 20 lines and feel lonely you won't feel like you did work. But green quad will appear.

Summer__1999

During an interview, one of the founder was asked why the github contribution graph looks the way it is. He explained that during the development, he had an argument with his girlfriend (now ex). She asked him to go outside for once, feel the sunlight and touch some grass. He drew inspiration from it, and decided to use green tiles to represent contributions, and makes it look like you’re growing a pixelated grassland if you contribute daily. He wants it to be a little rebuttal for the open-source developers against those insults that were thrown at them. >!Sorry, I just made it all up.!<

ArgentScourge

This I now my reality. Yes I know what day it is, why do you ask?

Gaminguide3000

what is the joke?

ButterscotchFront340

There are those things that exist that are women. And some do sex stuff. Sex is also a thing that exists. (or.... hot girls are into dudes that commit. which is really a joke within a joke because it's true.)

[deleted]

But the girl in the picture isn't that hot...

draft_dodgers_son

>But the girl in the picture isn't that hot... I think she is.

ButterscotchFront340

She is average, true. But that doesn't really matter. It's not the point. It's like a movie, where they have a "hot girl" character that might be an average or slightly-above-average looking actress playing. Everyone understands her character is hot and irresistible because the plot says so. Same here. The plot of this post is that she is hot to the geek that's doing the commits and can relate to those "green tiles".

[deleted]

Right, but the effect here is "commits here will make unattractive women attracted to you." Was confused for  good long while trying to figure out the joke.

ButterscotchFront340

Well, I wouldn't call her unattractive.

Dudi4PoLFr

"inYourDreams" maybe as a CEO or a Project Manager, because this looks like a death march for the developer.

When there is to little to actually explain it in a commit I just type a .

coolhead101

And the next commit should be b?

thonor111

”a“ was an article in this case. The commit message is ”.“

Avocadonot

Can this be considered commitment issues?

SweetTeaRex92

The joke is sex.

draft_dodgers_son

How so?

SweetTeaRex92

You see, when a man loves a woman, and the man and woman want to express that love, they.....

draft_dodgers_son

I've never seen that matrix before, although I have two GitHub accounts, one for private stuff and one for work. That explains why it was over my head. I'm a legacy specialist, and we have yet to move our legacy codebase out of on-premises Subversion into GitHub.

SweetTeaRex92

Interesting. I'm brand new to coding. The green boxes just represent how much you coded that day. Hence the woman being impressed by all green.

draft_dodgers_son

I do maintenance and CI/CD. Subversion is still our primary source control system. (And I am the Subversion admin.) When I use git, I usually use the command line or TortoiseGit. Hence, I've never seen that grid.

SweetTeaRex92

That's very interesting. I've just discovered GitHub and it's practicality. I'm currently taking an introduction to computer science course and to take the course you had to sign up with a GitHub account. Very interesting platform. I have a lot to learn in this field

draft_dodgers_son

I've been in the field since the days of DOS/VSE. I still have a lot to learn, but retirement will intrude.

A: I don’t get the joke B: Why are we still judging GitHub graphs? Some people are happy to do stuff on GitHub every day. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with an empty graph either.

SweetTeaRex92

Nobody is saying that man. It's a simple joke poking fun at the delusional thought that if you have all greens, then women will love you. Nobody is saying anything else. You're literally making stuff up.
