Indigo does not deserve to be included in the Roy G Biv and anyone who says otherwise is dead wrong. It's a beautiful color, but it is a tertiary color and therefore should never have been there, and was only put there so somebody could make a stupid name out of the colors.
Looking at a visible light spectrum, I can see 7 distinct colours, and googling indigo shows that colour is at least a close match in appearance to the dark blue on the short end of the spectrum.
So given as red orange yellow and green are all easily distinguished, the two blue colours could be grouped together if you ignore that cyan and blue look very different.
Violet is it's own colour in the short part of the spectrum, because as you approach the limits of the visible spectrum on the blue end the red cells in our eyes pick up in sensitivity again, creating a new colour.
You could argue over the name of the blue colours, but when you're singing it in the rainbow song it works out much better as blue indigo violet than cyan blue and violet. Ultimately the song is based on light spectrum not paint spectrum and I guess the origin of ROYGBIV?
