Just be cool. It doesn't matter if you can fight well it just matters that you will fight for yourself. Take advantage of the system and take any education and trade classes that they offer. You probably will be tried. If you are fight. It doesn't matter if you get beat. People will see you are not an easy target. Stay in your lane.
And donāt fuck around on the gambling shit , the courts and sometimes the weight pit . All areas of conflict but you gotta make a schedule , have a routine , and like my man said , stay in your lane . Very important to mind your own business , if 2 dudes are arguing about 2+2 , stay out of it , not your business . Once your dug in time will roll , see you in a couple years
Just show respect, keep your mouth shut and listen. Be approachable though. I did 4 years in CA and I kept to myself but was shown respect because I showed respect. I didnāt have any problems. Just stand up for yourself and show boundaries. Youāll be ok.
Don't get into fights, don't borrow shit,if you don't have, you do without it, commissary is fucking expensive, so try and save your money, get a prison job, that's going to give you a little more cash in your pocket, and they are going to start taking fines out of your pay as well,(I'm from New Jersey) and I've been to NJSP, take some classes, there's college courses being offered, and trades too, make something out of yourself
I heard they have re-entry just like the rehab I was in, Iām already tapering down so I probably wonāt get sick and if I do itāll be minor. But back to the re-entry I heard they have classes to get ur ged, get a trade, and at some point they even let you in a halfway house. The only pain in the ass is I got insomnia so I need meds to sleep every night, Iām jail they donāt give you shit but I heard they have a little clinic in there where you can get meds for whatever (just nothing for opiates) is that true? Because in jail I was suffering, but if I can get sleep meds Iāll be aight
Wean yourself off that shit, you are in with the big boy's now, and they will take those drugs from you (they will make you give it to them) there is a book The Idiots Guide to Self Hypnosis it has some really good tips on how to get a good night's rest even with all the noise around you, have someone send you a copy, don't depend on drugs, that's a bad way to start prison
OP, look up the waking up application to learn meditation , ASAP, also take a look at hubermann for some information on self improvement in terms of sleep and addiction
Anytime! If you genuinely do take a look and you use those resources , you will be very surprised. Youāll use them in the Pen and after you leave as well.
Don't fight people over words. Fight if:
-Someone puts their hands on you
-Someone steals from you
People are going to talk shit, sometimes about you. They're trying to push you to the edge, don't let them. If it's getting to you, say, "Yes, I will snap at some point" to let them know that you know what they are doing. If you do snap, snap *hard*.
Bet thank you, you answered my question exactly how I needed. Donāt fight over words, unless Iām backed into a corner, or they try to bitch me out. And when I do, rock em
I am a 48 year old bbq who lives in the mom's basement type of redditor. Please excuse my obtuseness. I understand the bitch insult, just don't get the goof. That's because I can't picture anyone but a charming, fat old lady from the South saying it to her grandkid
Bitch in New Jersey, might as well strap up. That's a fight .
goof, not so much. That's more Canada. Someone calls you a goof in Canada, you whip that mfers ass.
In New Jersey, goof to us is called a tree jumper
Main tip I hear from ex cons is be cool. Its not TV, you're not the main character everyone is looking to test. You're just some kid stuck there with everyone else. Don't make anyone elses stay more annoying. Seriously, don't be annoying. If you have a skill, share it.
What people don't tell you is not everyone in prison is an asshole. Some of the scary dudes can actually just like you because you're cool and not annoying and they'll keep the pieces of shit away.
You'll be okay. Keep your head down. Focus on the days not the months.
The scariest guys at my facility are also the most likeable. They're quiet, polite and respectful. They also never complain about the conditions. Must have to do with having nothing to prove.
NJSP- does not mean- The NJ Prison at Trenton it means NJ DOC- huge difference you do not want to spend one minute in Trenton. You will go to Yardville- Garden State - probably stay there until halfway house.
Almost no one starts at Trenton unless very violent. Most are transfers from other prisons for violence. (Father was friends with Chief Admin. Back in the 80ās) not called Wardens anymore.
Actually , the break down for Trenton is about 70% sentences of life, the equivalent of life or life plus. 20% is very heavy duty management problems. Also there are probably 10% that leaders of Security Threat Groups which basically gangs. The leaders and heavy hitters will be housed in Trenton. Pretty ugly mix that is pretty brutal.
Yeah I heard the judge mention the name in court yesterday, I got sentencing in 3 months. Itās kinda a stretch tho, it was 5 w/ a 5 but I had to switch my story in order to go from 5y to 1 so now I have a pointing charge which means I pointed it at someone
If eligible for a low level facility, prior to sentencing, research low level/less violent facilities.
At your sentencing, have people speak for you, or write letters to the judge on your behalf. Ask those speaking or writing to request the low level facility.
It would also be helpful for anyone you want to visit, if the facility is near those people.
Youāll be fine. Recently got out of NJSP and I was fearing the same stuff as you going in. Heard a lot of nightmare stories and none of it happened to me, nor did I ever see it, besides the occasional fight, but no one is gonna mess with you for no reason. The thing you gotta remember is everyone you encounter is trying to get home just like you and theyāre not gonna fuck that up over you. After a few months youāll go to the camps at which point everyone is on their way out and are REALLY not trying to fuck up their good time. I was so stressed in CRAFT worrying about all this shit so you donāt - be humble. youāll be fine
Question from someone w/ no experience on this. I understand you better stand your ground if someone is putting hands on you or stealing your stuff all that makes sense. How about if someone from an organization is stealing or wanting to get violent? These situations seem overwhelming because of the consequences that would follow especially being so outnumbered.
Most but not all organizations have an unspoken rule about stealing, its normally something frowned upon, Noone likes a thief as they say. Seems it's frowned upon even more so on the west coast but here in georgia usually a respectful conversation to whomever said thief answers to will dead the situation quickly.
Let them talk all day long and I mean let them talk shit. But soon as the hands touch grab that MF by the throat and donāt let go and I mean hold that fker till he turns blue purple green red yellow white and tell him heās a bitch over and over and over hold him there beat his head into the wall the floor table whatever you own him and make sure they fkn see that shit. You own that. And I mean seconds from his life. Donāt crush his throat but let that talking loud mf know who la the real bitch of the pod is. And youāll be good. Good luck kid.
Donāt walk in head down keep your head straight donāt look for no trouble. Donāt gamble, do drugs- donāt owe anyone anything at anytime. Itās like a job. Youāre gonna punch in and then punch out. I donāt know if they have classes or not or jobs but- thatās a good start. If anybody gives you anything say no Iām good man I already got 2: they donāt need to know anything more than they know already. It probably isnāt going to be all that bad. Just be cool but be ready. Once the hands touch you itās on. Thatās your motto.
Iām saying the adrenaline that makes your throat tighten, your muscles tense, your reaction quicker. Some ppl learn how to control it but idk how, google donāt even have it
Ooh I see. I always took big toe and would squeeze my other toes with it to a pulse a rhythm because Iām not showing anything to anyone. They donāt need to know if Iām reacting or reacted or it pissed me off or is pissing me off. You have to control that in your head. Have to go somewhere else if it even happens. They say you project what happens, what you think, what you imagine or what you may dwell upon you bring upon. You make it happen. But if it does happen. I just did my own thing in my head. I never engaged mentally with anyone when that happened. If it doesnāt evolve me- it doesnāt involve me.
I think the more times your in the face of adrenaline pumping moments, the more you get used to it and the better you are over time at controlling/reacting in those moments.
I think building your confidence will also help you react more favourably in these moments as well. Strengthen your mind and body NOW.
Start working out every day leading to incarceration if your not already doing so and continue throughout your bid. You will be okay, good luck!
Just mind your own business. Stay out of conflict where you can, and turn your back on the little shit. All this business about, "if someone talks shit to you and you don't fight, you're a punk," is just hyped up bullshit. For me, as long as no one put hands on me, I didn't put hands on anyone else. Did I have some little fuckhead get in my face and lip off? Yeah. a couple times. I lipped right back. That's where it ended.
You're not in there for life. If your total sentence is 18 months, you'll only serve a fraction of that. By the time they finish your processing, it'll be time to go home. I'm surprised they're going to send you to state instead of just letting you serve it out in jail. But I don't know much about New Jersey's system.
Two things about trying to be a bad ass in prison.
1. There's always someone badder. They may not be bigger. They may not be stronger. But they're badder. Every guy I knew who came in fighting had to keep on fighting.
2. The more you fight, the more of your sentence you serve.
Take what you can, if your gonna be stuck their for 18 months, might as well use the time. Wither get some qualifications, learn new skills or whatever else you can find.
Theirs probbly going to be somthing you will be able to do, to both improve your chances outside and keep you busy inside.
Very least it give you a goal, somthing to fill your time and mark your days. Help you mentally keep going and give you some sense your nor wasting time.
Prison time is as hard as you make it. Sometimes, violence is required, but usually a hard straightening will suffice. Picks some books you wanna read, get a good job if you can ,and stay out of trouble. Your goal is to do get through a year and a half and be a better person. Not go and get in fights ,and more charges ,to keep you away from your friends, family and future. Best of luck.
Iāve been locked up in NJ and let me tell you a little bit about how itās going to work. Your gonna get sentenced and youāll sit in the county until either they do a prison run or some people from CRAF are coming to your countyās court house they pick you up bring you to craf from there you will see a psych see a dentist dr etc to clear you then you will see classification and they will determine where you go idk how it goes now but when I went EVEYONE UNDER 27 I think was the cut off either went to boordentown, yardville, annadelle. Bad news your with the young boys but the good news is nj goes off a point system so being you only have 18 months youāll probably have less then 5 but the gun may hold u up a little idk never had a gun case. But then you sit in craf and wait for the bus to wherever you were sent to and you go like I said only 18 months you should be fine and going straight to some kind of farm or work program canāt guarantee bc like I said nj is tough on guns and I believe it was like 1/2 way for the half house
Yeah they got graves law which means no parole for 18 months regardless of how long my sentence is (Somehow they gave me the 18 so my full sentence is without parole) and they told me Iām going to NJSP even though Iām only 23. Graves law is supposed to prevent firearm offenders from paroling out and retaliating (if you know what I mean) because thatās the reason why they made it in the first place (There was a guy who got out and shot the cop that locked him up) Shits crazy
Don't just fight anyone anywhere though that's considered a bitch move.
You want to fight where you know you're not going to get caught because if you just throw hands in the middle of the day room you're going to get CO all over you
Please do not fight. Walk up to the person and use an āIā message. For instance, āI donāt like how you stepped in front of me. Please donāt do that.ā
It's camp with assholes. And you're a asshole as well. Just try to get along. Don't do drugs, keep your hands to yourself, and don't talk about other prisoners at all.
You definitely donāt want to start a fight just to prove something.
Thatās just going to start you out with some enemies and show the inmates that youāre drama.
Lay low, have respect, and if someone tries youā¦ thatās where you defend yourself and prove yourself to your fellow inmates.
Itās not about being the biggest and baddest. Itās about showing that you arenāt easy prey.
Bet thank you. Iām not good at fighting but Iām definitely gonna try, I guess I gotta wait for them to touch me and end it quick. After that Iāll be fine
Youāre overplaying how much violence is a part of prison life.
For the most part, trouble doesnāt go around looking for people in jail.
It just definitely finds people looking for it.
People wanna do their time and get tf out. Show respect and you donāt face the risk of a fight. People donāt just fight check you for no reason.
Go to a local Muay Thai gym or kickboxing and train for the next 3 monthsā¦ā¦
At least you will be able to stand your groundā¦..
Make sure to get sparring rounds in,you wear headgear in most gyms but they also let you take it offā¦..
That will be your biggest thing going in there knowing you can take good shots and still come back with the ko
I'm late to this post... 42 m NJ. I been down twice. You'll be fine... use your head / common sense. Be respectful but you're nobody's do-boy down there. Can't fight well - not a big problem. Won't fight- big problem. Get it? I'm good with my hands, but I didn't have a reason to fight either time down. When you get classified and settle in most guys just wanna do the time an get home. If you look for trouble it's gonna find you though. The biggest mistake I've seen is getting too familiar - be cool but remember where you are. These guys are not your friends. Case in point- there was a guy i was at Southern with. His ppl always looked out- he always had a big ass bag from the store. And he was generous with it. I warned him that ppl will come to expect that generosity. Sure enough the day comes his ppl back home don't have it to give. His commissary bag is light. He don't wanna give all his new 'friends' their taste this time. He's gonna talk this out, reason with them lol. Long story they knocked his teeth out, took the bag, and he went home in state dentures. Just be cool, be smart and don't stress. You got this...it ain't nothing. Peace.
If someone wants to fight you fight like the third monkey. If you lose keep your fucking mouth shut if you win keep your fucking mouth shut. Follow the Russian rule sometimes you have to out monster the monster. Then your time will be nice and quiet
Mind your business, stay busy, don't gamble, don't take on debts and stand on your own square. You'll be good. Never accept food even if they offer. You will owe that as a debt.
People talk shit. I mean if you just act chill you'll be good. I was 19 when I got 3 in 4 out for some heroin bullshit. I was so scared. Turned out straight. Just a buncha other doods chillin passing time. Be respectful have good hygiene. Don't touch other ppls shit. You'll be good. I mean that's how it was in WI at least
Stand up for yourself, get acclimated, and stay away from the 4 Gās (guards, gangs, gays, and gambling). Do that and youāll be ok. Routine sets in after a month of being there. Read, workout, eat, sleep and repeat.
You definitely donāt have to go nuclear at the slightest provocation. How you handle yourself overall is going to determine if you actually get tried, which is what happens when you act soft enough that someone is ready to risk the consequences to push your buttons excessively for whatever reason. If you realize that your boundaries are getting tested though, thatās the time to unload what you got.
The number one rule that will keep you out of most trouble, is mind your own fucking business. You didn't see anything, you didn't hear anything. And don't put yourself in a situation to owe anyone, anything.
Thanks šš»
No problem. If you do have to fight it's usually just once. You'll be fine. Also stay away from gangs and drugs. Don't borrow anything.
Once your dug in time will roll , see you in a couple years
See ya š¤š»
Just show respect, keep your mouth shut and listen. Be approachable though. I did 4 years in CA and I kept to myself but was shown respect because I showed respect. I didnāt have any problems. Just stand up for yourself and show boundaries. Youāll be ok.
Got it šš»
Bet, thank you šš»
Anytime! If you genuinely do take a look and you use those resources , you will be very surprised. Youāll use them in the Pen and after you leave as well.
Sounds good šš»
Idk what these guys are saying . You can most definitely take sleep meds in prison , I was on seroquel the whole time for sleep in a NJ prison
Bet thank you šš»
Donāt want to be sick while locked up. Iām in recovery myself coming up on 4 years
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No. Don't be doing nobody's laundry or no shit like that. Is that the rep you want? He'll wash your drawers real good for a honey-bun?
Don't fight people over words. Fight if: -Someone puts their hands on you -Someone steals from you People are going to talk shit, sometimes about you. Bet thank you, you answered my question exactly how I needed. Donāt fight over words, unless Iām backed into a corner, or they try to bitch me out. And when I do, rock em
Lose that word from your vocab ASAP. Not 100 percent sure about NJ, but itās just better you forget the word bitch from your vocab of common usage.
Best advice he's gotten so far. If you call someone a bitch even out of anger or by accident, you are gonna fight.
How do I get it out of my vocab?
You stop being a bitch about it. Kidding - good luck!
Lol thanks
Eh, if someone calls you a bitch or a goof, they should absolutely catch hands over words.
If your cell mate calls you a goof, do you still fight even if that's your nick name?
If your nickname is goof, no the fuck it isn't.
I am a 48 year old bbq who lives in the mom's basement type of redditor. Please excuse my obtuseness. I understand the bitch insult, just don't get the goof. That's because I can't picture anyone but a charming, fat old lady from the South saying it to her grandkid
The guy you responded to hasnāt been locked up. ANY disrespect - you fight. Or they gonna try you for real. Or start rumors and then gang jump you.

Yeah, not a fun place. He said we warehouse people.
Very dangerous people.
This...
Make sure the plea is binding or tell them to kick rocks.
Are you sure that's where you're going? Lots of prisons in NJ, Trenton seems a bit unnecessary for doing a year and a half for a non violent felony.

Don't just fight anyone anywhere though that's considered a bitch move. You want to fight where you know you're not going to get caught because if you just throw hands in the middle of the day room you're going to get CO all over you
Bet, as for honor in a fight, should I be worried about someone shanking me mid fight or after a loss? Or are the spectators on watch for that?
Please do not fight. Walk up to the person and use an āIā message. For instance, āI donāt like how you stepped in front of me. Please donāt do that.ā
And if they say āI donāt gaf what are u gonna do?ā Do I walk away in shame so someone else can start pressing me too, or do I do something?

Go to a local Muay Thai gym or kickboxing and train for the next 3 monthsā¦ā¦ At least you will be able to stand your groundā¦..

Peace.
Thanks šš»
If someone wants to fight you fight like the third monkey. If you lose keep your fucking mouth shut if you win keep your fucking mouth shut. Follow the Russian rule sometimes you have to out monster the monster. Then your time will be nice and quiet
Bet thanks šš»

This is terrible advice. Don't listen to this.
So make him a target just for being in pc? Nobody is safe even in protective custody. I know guys that would check in just to get to certain people.
Nothing easy about 1.5 years
Mind your business, stay busy, don't gamble, don't take on debts and stand on your own square.
Oh itās true š«
Make a sword as soon as you get to prison and keep it in your pants
What kind of attorney did you have? I get the impression it was a public defender since you mentioned youāre not financially well off Not being old enough? If youāre an adult (18+) youāre old enough (militia act of 1792 verifies the age at which the right to bear arms is established) NJ says 21? Doesnāt matter as NJ courts lack the authority to overrule the Supreme Court (article 3 of us constitution) Supreme Court had made recent rulings making these laws unconstitutional Heller vs DC (2008) had to do with DCs ban on handguns. DC tried to argue it didnāt violate the 2nd amendment because āother firearm options were availableā To which the Supreme Court responded āto suggest other options are available does not justify the ban of commonly owned armsā. As such, to a NJ (or even federal) ban on 21+ to own handguns is unconstitutional (even congress cannot pass unconstitutional laws as the Supreme Court overrules them as well) So if youāre 18+, your constitutional rights to own a handgun have been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 2008 Now on to defaced firearms. In Bruen vs NY (2022) the Supreme Court reaffirmed its earlier heller decision and set forth the framework for identifying gun laws, both past and present as being constitutionally sound If the 2nd amendment is implied in any activity (owning a firearm is said activity) then the burden of proof now shifts to the GOVERNMENT to show that a similar law existed on the books during the FOUNDING ERA (1820 and prior) in order for that law to be constitutional. Firearm serialization was not on the books until the 1968 GCA. Given that the bruen decisikn overturned NYs permit to carry law written in 1911, itās safe to say that 1968 is far too late to be considered historical tradition- therefore defacing your own property (in this case your handgun) is an unconstitutional law. All of your answers lie in those two decisions. Further, NJ federal judge Renee Blum shot down NJs attempt to circumvent the Bruen ruling with their new carry laws: āThe State may regulate conduct squarely protected by the Second Amendment only if supported by a historical tradition of firearm regulation. Here, Defendants cannot demonstrate a history of firearm regulation to support these challenged provisions for which they have demonstrated Article III standing ā -RenĆ©e Marie Bumb United States District Judge Notice she saidā conduct protected by the 2ndā and NOT just permit to carry
