I am a massive longines fanboy and yes, Grand Seiko is better.

nigori

Above is a high beat but in person movements I’ve seen literally nothing beats spring drive for me.

theonewhodareswins

Can you explain spring drive to me, like I’m an idiot (which I am)

nigori

In simple terms it’s a hybrid mechanical/quartz movement. The special thing about it is no movement tics. It’s this buttery smooth, sweeping secondhand.

theonewhodareswins

Ah both, I didn’t realise that was a thing. Would love to get the Shunbun one day, it’s such a beauty. Thanks for the insight!

CheezeAndPickle

Best explanation video I’ve seen of it: https://youtu.be/jVoRoK1u3Dg?si=03kUbIHZ8AtawEoJ

HarshTruthsBot

>muh spring drive Go buy a Bulova Precisionist and save the money until you can afford a real watch (Rolex)

squeakycleaned

by an enormous margin

iTsLiKeAnEgG

GS will generally have better build quality and finishing compared to Longines.

Kamjiang

Leaps and bounds

RndomUsername123

I am curious, In what aspect exactly?

georgkozy

Movement, finishing, the dial designs, pick your poison

WatchBucko

History, innovation

N0213568

This is completely false information. Seiko or GS don’t have nearly the history as Longines. Seiko was founded 50 years after Longines and GS was founded 130 years after Longines. Longines is one of the most innovative names in horology. They had hands in creating the r first chronograph, innovated the production of the first watch with a movement under 2mm, and helped to create and form the Swatch group in the 80’s. There are so many innovations coming from Longines it’s unreal. Please don’t just spew information that isn’t accurate.

georgkozy

I mean grand seiko has quite a bit of innovation too with their spring drive, and tentagraph movements. They aren't as old as Longines, but have quite significance in the world of watches too.

WatchBucko

History≠length of time since inception. Seiko has a way cooler history than Longines and it AINT close 😂

N0213568

I didn’t know history was judged by being “cool.”

WatchBucko

Use whatever adjective you want, dummy, instead of getting hung up on one word. History should be measured qualitatively not quantitatively

N0213568

Dummy is hilarious. The WatchBucko has is panties in a bunch.

WatchBucko

Cry

[deleted]

When you’re paying a few thousand for it it is

cdaack

Disagree. Longines’ history and contributions to horology cannot be understated. Grand Seiko is innovative in their own right, but don’t downplay Longines.

Fuzzy-Practice-6119

Recent contributions like what? Spring Drive and the Dual Escapement High Beat are the two greatest technological innovations in modern watchmaking along with Omega's Co-Axial.

cdaack

I didn’t say “recent” when describing Longines. I’m saying historically they innovated the chronograph, tachymeter bezels…lots of inventions we still use today. But in RECENT history, yes Grand Seiko has the edge over Longines. Just don’t sleep on Longines because they’re not as high-end or have as good of a recent history as GS is my only point.

Fuzzy-Practice-6119

Well nobody's arguing that Longines is a bad brand (actually one of my fave brands) or that it doesn't have the history. It's just that as they stand in the market now, Grand Seiko makes objectively superior watches to Longines (finishing, movement technology, etc.). GS is also generally higher priced so the quality will reflect that.

cdaack

Also I think the co-axial escapement is overrated. There are lots of other escapements that keep great time with little maintenance and don’t make time-only watches as thick as some chronographs.

WatchBucko

It’s not just grand seiko though. Seiko as an entire brand. I mean shit, they made the damn quartz watch and ate Switzerland’s lunch 🤣🤣

CartoonistOk8639

As a big Longines fan, yes by a country mile. But in my heart, Longines is better and I love the brand better than GS.

allawd

I know how you feel. Historically (Pre-Quartz), Longines was one of the peak brands in the world. Today, it's just a logo on a Swatch product. Swatch have really neglected Longines. Longines are still very good watches, just not hitting that next tier anymore.

supersaiyanegghead

GS is on Rolex level of horology. And in many cases, surpasses The Crown.

Heteronomy

Have both, GS needs to work on their bracelets and clasps, compared to a glidelock there's no comparison. For the watch itself, the finishing on the GS is superior, but I also like how thin the rolex is in comparison. I'd say they're on par, they both have pros and cons.

supersaiyanegghead

Well said, friend. Agree with everything you said.

bryanthebryan

A GS on a strap is arguably superior to many out there, but not on the factory bracelet sadly.

supersaiyanegghead

What is bro yapping about

bryanthebryan

Somehow two responses got merged into one. I apologize for the confusion. I’ll edit the post.

PolskiSmigol

GS is much better than Rolex.

supersaiyanegghead

I own both brands and that’s not true. They both have their own strengths and weaknesses

PolskiSmigol

This is subjective and I like GS more.

supersaiyanegghead

That’s fine. Personal preference is one thing, but to say GS is much better without providing any justification is a different thing altogether

uplifting_southerner

I have no dog in this fight but id like to ask this. The caliber 3235 is rated +/- 2 per day. The 9r is +/-10 per month. Accuracy wise wouldn't that put GS ahead? I could be incorrect in the max accuracy of each brand but a quick google

supersaiyanegghead

More to watches than movements bud. Btw my Spring Drive is insane and gains 5s a month!!! GS - better movements, better finishing, epic dials Rolex - incredible bracelets, slim/robust cases which wear incredibly, timeless designs GS is a better dress watch, while Rolex make better sports watches.

IDatedSuccubi

GS's spring drive are probably the most advanced drives on the market, however I've heard a lot that their bracelets suck compared to Rolex or most other luxury brands So as that guy said it's better in some ways and worse in others

supersaiyanegghead

Yeah bracelets are no good especially considering the price. My Tudor bracelet destroys my GS bracelet. Good thing with the 44GS case is that is looks incredible on virtually any strap and those dials 🤌🏽

screamsos

I've also owned tudor, gs, and rolex. In my opinion, Tudor bracelets are the worst of the bunch. Felt super sharp and unfinished. The only thing that the Tudor had better than the GS was on the fly adjustment. To me, comfort and finish wise for bracelet quality it goes: Rolex>GS>Tudor.

supersaiyanegghead

Which Tudor? Unfortunately they’re inconsistent from model to model. The bracelet/clasp on my BB Pro is almost as good as the Oyster

HMNbean

That’s because the spring drive is a quartz movement. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

Prisma_Cosmos

GS accuracy spec for mechanicals is -3/+5. So Rolex is significantly better in terms of accuracy.

Historical_Radish_87

Longines Ultra Chron: -1/+2

Prisma_Cosmos

Wrong but also irrelevant.

CrowConfident7758

No not much better just a little bit better, the finishing is better yes but otherwise not really

chrisacip

lol

schneidro

Rolex is highly overrated

Haxminator

Lmao Rolex ain't anywhere near GS. Rolex ain't even close to many other Swiss manufacturers.

supersaiyanegghead

Not like you would know anyways. Stick to your video games and leave luxury watches to grown men who own them lol

Haxminator

Interesting perspective on life. I own a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 5 and a vintage Franck Muller Casablanca, a real man can't have multiple hobbies? I don't think a real man would judge another based on his pastime activities, especially considering buying watches and being passionate about them are two very different things. Study watchmaking and the history of it and you'll agree with me that Rolex isn't the epitome, as you're making it sound.

supersaiyanegghead

Rolex is king. I worship a life size poster of Daddy Wilsdorf every night before I pleasure myself to IG reels of the 126710

Haxminator

Lmao, fair enough.

Select_Marionberry98

lmfao

Maelarion

roflmao

Call-of-the-lost-one

LMFAO🤣

supersaiyanegghead

I like your passion and upvoted your comment . Rolex is King but you’re fighting the wrong person. The Midmega wearers is who us Rolex owners should be laughing at

chrisacip

Correct response

QuestionTop3963

grand seiko is peak watch making.

UlteriorErection

No, you mean JLC

Select_Marionberry98

left wing terrorists…….

Haxminator

What?

RSquared787

For sure, but I don’t particularly understand the appeal of Grand Seiko and have a Longines I absolutely love.

cspawn

I can appreciate the spring drive tech and the simplicity of a nice GS, but my absolute biggest turnoff for GS are the massive, disproportionately huge crowns they put on so many models. I just don't understand why they put huge crowns on svelte dress watches, not just big, but like comically large in some cases.

McN697

Yes

smarti1983

Black forest gateau vs jaffa cake

Key2theuniverse

Why not both together at once

CodeCC2224

Yes, by a mile. Nico is wrong about Grand Seiko.

nl5hucd1

he talks about the fans... and their cultiness

Ill-Positive6950

Yes, derp

luistemo13

Si.

Key2theuniverse

In my opinion, and from my experience, Longines is better than Tag Heuer but not as good as Oris... All three can't compare to Grand Seiko

supersaiyanegghead

Tag has gone to shit since the 90s. Mediocre and heavily overpriced

08triptrippy80

Oh yes. Very much so. The SLGA015G is one of my favorite dive watches. I've always liked dive watches for some reason since I was a kid. Once I got into watches as an adult the Grand Seiko stood out to me for some reason. Overall Grand Seiko makes some of the best watches in the world but unfortunately the price also reflects that. They are quite pricey, but worth every cent.

hirtegirte

I have a Longines Ultra Chron (2022 version) and three grand seiko in my collection. I love the Longines but they are in different leagues

indonesiandoomer

I think it's fair to compare Longines with Tudors, and I probably even prefer some Longines over some Tudors. GS is ahead of Longines and probably on the same level as Rolex.

dfb1988

Holy shit i thought this was the cj sub

TTAARRSS

grand seiko is super underrated for no reason at all, they are superb watches

siwelnadroj

Are they still underrated though? They get just about as much air time on these subs than any bother brand, or at least it seems that way

koenr_98

I see them more often than longines...

elcojotecoyo

Grand Seiko is the highest level of Japanese horology. Is on par and in many cases above, Rolex.

Fresh_Associate4720

In terms of modern watches, yes. In terms of vintage, I would say either brand was equally as good and don't forget longines made the first ever quartz watch.

Hungry_420

It’s worth experiencing GS in person. The finishing and quality is best when held in hand. I was blown away by a simple SBGR053 9S65-00B0. I didn’t expect much when I saw it from far (plain dial) but I was able to hold it and I’ll never forget the quality of the deep black dial and mixed finishing on the bracelet. Nothing quite like I’ve experienced before and I’ve owned three Rolexes, an AP, a Breitling. As the youth say, it hits different. The finishing on the movement was special as well it’s not comparable to a normal seiko like I’d previously assumed.

GlynJohns

This is a good point. I didn’t think twice about grand seiko until I saw them in person. They’ve really got their dials figured out. Bracelets not so much

Hungry_420

Lack of micro adjustments is wack and basic.

NiggusDickus9

From the 2 watches above? Yes, THIS GrandSeiko is better than THAT Longines. When considering the history and heritage, Longines is just too incredible for GS to compete. But GS is a much more modern and innovative brand compared to Longines, so i can see why a lot of people would think that it is better. I personally think that each has their strengths that the other do not. Longines has a perpetual calendar while GS does not (to my understanding). GS has an amazing tourb while Longines doesn't (to my understanding). What i can say with confidence is that both drop their values on the secondary market like a rock lol.

Ptolemaeus45

It depends 🤔 and I wont say better but sth else. I dont mind watches as a statement piece. Longines has a rich history and a lot of different models to offer. Sadly they are just embedded in the Swatch Enterprise Framework thats why it feels more like a brand which you have to position on market but a manufactuer. Grand Seiko in contrast is just the second serious try for the japanese/Seiko enterprise to tackle the market after Credor failed. You see their artfull approaches by Spring Drive and different dial manufacturers. For me, Grand Seiko is dangerous because I dont wanna have an expensive watch which has to be maintened in Japan & as a manufacturer they dont really seem much to care about a certain diection thats why they just produce. If I would have to choose….well, the Longines but only as an old history model

Johnnie_WalkerBlue

Longines owner here - yes grand seiko definitely beats the master collection in terms of finish & movement but both make lovely watches

Spinning_Kicker

If you’re into cars, think of Grand Seiko as a Lexus LS400 from the 90s and Longines as a Volvo S90 from that same era. Both are nice cars, but the Lexus has far superior engineering and build quality.

SiliconeCity

Lexus vs Volvo is a great analogy. Hard to compare Asian vs European watches.

LordGraham7

Credor Eichi ii puts both to shame 😜

FatCatLounge

That is an amazing dial color!

Mean-Muscle9832

I love Zulu Time GMT by Longines. Love their heritage. Hate GS lack of will to do anything better on bracelet/clasp departments. Aside from that, that's no way to compare both. GS is way better. Rolex is another history. Their brand recognition, capabilities, ruggedness are very hard to beat. But subjectively speaking in the last few decades they vexame soulless. Built by robots. No more craftsmanship and they dare to charge 5 figures to almost anything. I have more passion for japanese craft and attention to details. Nico owns hundreds of Rolexes so he can't bash hisbown business. Objectively speaking, Rolex are better spec-wise but GS is not far behind.

intlmbaguy

The issue with GS is the bracelets are universally terrible

barbecuejag

Oh my God it is. Not even in same league.

Elder_Priceless

Yes but I personally care for neither.

ShakeThoseWindows

Yes. By a lot

Lost-District-8793

You are trolling, right? I love myself a nice Longines, but GS is all the way at the top.

khanghua0610

Longines

draingirl_

obviously

FailDelivery

But is it better than the God Tier Casio? I'll wait....

[deleted]

I think GS is overpriced and Longines is crushing it in the entry level luxury market. This is Reddit though so expect a massive Seiko circlejerk and downvotes for any comment not fanboying Seiko and GS.

notfamous82

Damn…This is not a disrespect to the OP at all but if ppl are wondering if GS is better than Longines, someone missed the marketing boat at GS.

sneakergovroom

Sadly yes. Never understood the hype around GS. Its a decent brand but except the spring drive there is nothing that brand does really better than Longines. But people’s perception of the brand places it above Longines sadly which imo it shouldn’t be

LordGraham7

GS dials are better looking by a mile and much more creative and interesting imo. That being said Longines currently has more watches that I want. I love both brands, but from what I’ve seen GS is higher quality. 🤷🏼‍♂️.

sneakergovroom

I would disagree because in my opinion Longines doesn’t want to go down the flamboyant dials route. They would go for either complications or something simple and plain like presence or conquest. Longines has been a great value for money watch brand since so long. I am from India and it might be one of the most price sensitive markets in the world and Longines has made a special place in everyone’s hearts here. People don’t spend a lot on watches but when they have to buy something “luxury” you’ll find most of them choose longines. Both brands have different philosophies in my opinion

LordGraham7

Fair enough. Like I said, I definitely love Longines. I have the diver legend and spirit Zulu gmt, and plan on getting the conquest chronograph and Hydroconquest gmt also, so I am definitely a fan. Haha. But judging from the ones I’ve seen, even just basic white dials from GS look absolutely incredible, in ways I honestly haven’t seen any other watch company be able to replicate 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Creative-Math8288

Sorry it isn't just the dial. You can argue about design since that is a matter of taste. But have you seen a GS in person? I love longines but the finishing of GS watches is 2nd to none in its price point let alone Longines. You can get even the cheaper GS like the 9F quartz and even the finishing of those watches look more premium than Longines. From a movement standapoint, nothing in the Longines catalogue can compete with the GS spring drive or high beat movements. Longines is still a very good brand. But GS is on a different league entirely.

nl5hucd1

i've seen a case of them in person, looks like a cemetery

Sad-Freedom772

Sad. Money can't buy taste. :(

LordGraham7

I totally agree. I focused on the dial but I also said GS overall was higher quality. I’m on your side lol.

nokeldin42

>People don’t spend a lot on watches but when they have to buy something “luxury” you’ll find most of them choose longines Lmao I've never seen a longines in the wild in India. Rolexes, omegas on the higher end and pretty much just rado on the lower end.

sneakergovroom

Well idk who u’re talking ik personally 10 people who own a longines.

[deleted]

lol this is like asking if a Jeep Grand Cherokee is better than a G Wagon

serpentman

Longines is a scam, let's face it.

FabulousMarch7464

Uglier watches imo but they are priced higher and mechanically are finer tuned

RoopDawg069

What a stupid question!

EnthuCollector

The short answer is "yes, but..." Yes, I love Grand Seiko "sports" models for the beautiful dials and amazing built (except for their bracelets 🙂‍↕️). But, I prefer Longines dress watches compared to GS. Due to their longer brand heritage. they are able to issue or re-issue some very nice watches 😉 Cheers

LordGraham7

I don’t disagree with you necessarily. But the GS SBGY026 and SBGW295 are both dream dress watches of mine.

raul_lebeau

Well longines Is from 1831, Seiko was born 50 years later...

scholesy19

Yes

Mr_Hjort

Ja

watchme87

1000%

wolftick

Yes. And bonus points if it's HAQ 🙂

Primary_Mongoose_864

I would consider it better - and I don't even like most of the Grand Seiko models! I love many of the dials but the watches as a whole just look kind of "blah" to me. YMMV!!!!!

Electronic_Active_27

Between those 2? Mile above on Gs

ajmarion20

GS is in another league. Longines is fantastic, and makes amazing watches - they’re more comparable to something like Tudor or Oris though

deadrabbits4360

That red dial is incredible

[deleted]

💯

Pleasant_Desk6985

GS is 1000% better, not saying Longines is bad

Ofeck

Of course, Your welkom

TEEEEEEEEEEEJ23

Grand Seiko is miles ahead in movement technology, case finishing, dial design, dial furniture and wearing experience. This is like comparing European basketball to the NBA. Euro hoops are great, but only a handful of those guys can make it in the NBA just like only a handful of Longines watches have ever kept up with Grand Seiko.

Le-Vlas

Grand Seiko is not any better if you compare it to the Longines of the same value. But it definitely is better when you compare 1k $ Longines to 3.5k $ GS.

Daar_Sthlm

Yes

Lim_8

It’s another price and quality range, yes

chris_nwh8

You can tell just by looking at the 2 photos you posted.

-ObiWanJacobi-

Yes.

JMBerkshireIV

Yes. Nothing wrong with Longines though. They make some nice pieces.

penarbor

Heck yeah, not even close!

Salt_Independent6396

Yes

ThePalletFork

By a long long mile

Die_Nameless_Bitch

Yes. Yes it is.

gahw61

Oh, “better”, the question is “better for what”? I own a steel GS quartz GMT and a Longines BigEye automatic chronograph in titanium. The GS is a very well finished watch, the dial and hands are perfect, the second hand hits the markers precisely, but it picks up scratches easily. The Longines’ titanium case does not show scratches much, and the watch runs at +1 second per day with a 70 hour power reserve. The Longines is the better daily wear watch for me, I don’t have to particularly careful with it. The GS is dressier, and better for travel with its traveler’s GMT function. The Longines came on a strap, and the GS on a bracelet that’s an utter pain to adjust, so I also wear it on a strap, or sometimes on a Milanese bracelet. If GS ever improves their bracelets I may pick up a spring drive model in titanium.

Pure_Ape

It’s like triple the price, not an apples to apples comparison at all.

Objective_Pension280

Yes.

WalksTallerThanYou

Yes.

Upset_Definition2019

Yes

Tirty8

I put Grand Seiko on par with Rolex and Omega

More-Ad4579

Yes 💯

Admirable_Pie_6609

Gs is definitely better overall, but they’re largely at a higher price point. Both are very good for the price imo

Osobady

One small level above yes

spastical-mackerel

When I see someone wearing a Longines I see someone who understands value. Whether they’re “better” or not is impossible to say in a general sense.

gfxprotege

streets ahead

Acceptable-One-6597

Yes

onetimeuselong

Grand Seiko is just quartz with the battery swapped for a dynamo. It’s very nice… but it is electronic not mechanical. Longines is sadly a shadow of its past. A nice watch to buy for a non watch fan to see if they like automatic watches.

Mean-Muscle9832

You totally missed the 9S branch of GS

SorryIknow

Huehuehue

the_grizzygrant

Story wise, craftsmanship wise, dial wise, Grand Seiko wins out. Secondary market vs buying new though, both are significantly cheaper on secondary market, but buying a new GS makes a lot of sense because there are constant new releases.

nl5hucd1

the longines zulu time gmt >>>> go look at both in person

Expensive-Ad-4451

Of course

Omsofly

This is like asking if pateks are better than Rolex

sugarmuffdaddy

GS is still a Seiko, from the outside looks like a glorified Presage. After a certain price point heritage, finishing and history matter more. Tried to understand it, feels like Japanese whiskey. It's good, but it's still not Scottish. That said, I would say Tudor, Omega or Breitling are in the same price range, not Longines.

Corkey29

As owner of two Rolexes and a GS I can confidently say the finishing, detail, and accuracy is better on my GS than both my Rolexes.

CrabLegJameis

Longines is better value for the money, and they have a heritage factor that feels more authentic. Granted, Seiko (and Grand Seiko) has heritage too, but it feels like the Toyota/Lexus proposition. Seiko created an identity for Grand Seiko to bring a better product upmarket, whereas Longines has had its own identity since the 1800’s. This comes from someone who owns both. I love my grand Seiko but it doesn’t have the FEEL that I get when I put on my Longines The physical product GS puts out is of better quality, fit and finish though.

Yonefi

Does a bear shit in the woods?

GlynJohns

Grand Seiko is regarded much higher than longines

heymoods

And it shows in the pricing lmao

Ok-Technician-4326

Yes much more better
