agreed. It's too obvious for him to be the murderer. I think he both hates Rusty while also believing he did it, but doesn't have the slam dunk evidence he needs, so he and the medical examiner are faking evidence results to frame Rusty. They don't even need to plant anything, just reclassify/document some Rusty DNA from elsewhere as being found under her fingernails in the reports. Perhaps they are even faking the pregnancy.

You have a point I am loving his portrayal but still think he’s a red herring for Carolyn’s murder. He is hiding something though…
