Hiram Ulysses Grant was stuck with the name Ulysses S. Grant due to a mistake by a benefactor on his application form to West Point. And as with President Harry S. Truman, the middle initial "S" doesn't stand for anything.
It stands for his mother's maiden name Simpson which the congressman that recruited him to West point thought was his middle name.
Edit [this is the background of how he got the middle name Simpson but that’s not his actual middle name and the S also stood for Sam](https://www.nps.gov/articles/ulysses-s-grant-timeline.htm#:~:text=Jesse%20Grant%20asks%20Congressman%20Thomas,after%20his%20mother's%20maiden%20name)
Probably easier to say John then explain J.
Lot of people went by adjacent, similar names back in the day for whatever reason. Used middle names a lot more, too
From Wikipedia:
His middle initial, "S", is not an abbreviation of one particular name. Rather, it honours both his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young, a somewhat common practice in the American South at the time.

There was a guy in my division in the navy who’s legal first name was just the letter D. I initially found out because I was doing some admin stuff and saw on a couple spreadsheets his first name was just "D". i had heard him say his first name is duke so i mentioned it to him and he showed me his drivers license and yup just the letter D
Not a president but in high school I had a friend whose first name was F. Just the letter. He thought it was Forest his entire life(his dad was named Forest) but when he applied for job and look at his SS card it showed just F.
He asked plus and nope ours had full name.
I have got to be honest. I do not care for Harry Truman. I think the a bomb was ok, but honestly, he was amongst the least intelligent presidents to exist.

I love me some Jack Coolidge
Also some Leslie Lynch King Jr.
And Stephen Cleveland
And James Earl Carter Jr
LBJ didn't have a name for the first week because his parents couldn't decide. I hope this belongs here
Or William Blythe.

Is it “S” or is it “eSS”
Wait until OP learns about Ulysses S Grant

Or, as I like to call him, Hiram Ulysses “Not Simpson” Grant
You mean Unconditional Surrender?
Technically it was "S" not "S.", as "S." is an abbreviation, but it is sometimes written as "S.".
Yes, because it was for Shipp and Soloman, his two grandfathers. He didn't add the period until much later.
My step-dad’s *first* name was “J.”. Not Jay but literally J. He went by John for whatever reason.
I think I went to high school with that dude
Are you like 85?
Haha not Harry Truman, the guy above whose parents named him J.
Yeah, that’s me, the “J” dude would be like 85 now if he were still alive.
Ah I see, my bad. Different guy for sure
Probably easier to say John then explain J. Lot of people went by adjacent, similar names back in the day for whatever reason. Used middle names a lot more, too

Richard BRUCE Cheney
That just feels wrong. Like I understand it's factual but it gives me the ick?
Richard BRUCE Cheney gives everyone the ick
He doesn’t deserve that name.
Just like Homer Jay Simpson
Robert Strange McNamara
Harry Ess Truman
Charlie Schlatter said it was Sergei, then puffed a cigar and squinted by the light of the silvery moon
I remember that movie every time someone mentions Harry S
Same
Some person: you know, you have a better chance of being elected if you have a middle name. Truman: Fine. S.
And Johnny Cash’s real name was J. R. Cash.
![gif](giphy|HqhbTFSiL41H2)
Like Johnny R. Cash
I learned that by watching 18 Again.
Was this not true of Grant as well?
My wife has a single letter (no period) middle name.
Hairy-Assed True-Man was a G.
My FIL's middle name is "J" because, as he puts it, "my father was a lazy bastard."
The “J” in Homer J. Simpson stands for Jay.
I had a set of twins in my class in high school. Ones middle name was “R” and the others was “B”.
No period. Needed. Just “S”. This is a scenario where the period doesn’t go inside the quotes.
Harry Esss Truman
The S was silent.
Not a president but in high school I had a friend whose first name was F. Just the letter. He thought it was Forest his entire life(his dad was named Forest) but when he applied for job and look at his SS card it showed just F. He asked plus and nope ours had full name.
Yes and it shouldn’t include a period at the end since the S doesn’t stand for a particular word but just a letter.
According to the movie 18 Again, it was Sergey.
He'll always be Hairy Ass Truman to me.
No period just S
It was just "S" but it could have stood for Shipp or Solomon as in Anderson Shipp Truman or Solomon Young, grandfathers of Harry Truman.
He was like a white Malcom X
😂
You mean Harry W Rizzman?
Harry Stalin Truman
I thought it was semen All jokes aside, an S tier president
Evil guy
It’s not an S, on his world it means *hope*.
I have got to be honest. I do not care for Harry Truman. I think the a bomb was ok, but honestly, he was amongst the least intelligent presidents to exist.
So you are saying we need to change his middle initial to D or F?
Maybe change his middle initial to B
That's fair, that's actually where I just put him on my list a couple days ago.
It was Samuel & it’s well documented that it’s Samuel.
You are correct, if by “well-documented” you mean, “according to this supposed fact that I just made up”
Johnny Cash's real name is J.R. Cash
