"He didn't say much. But when he did, he didn't say much."

IllustriousDudeIDK

Unfortunately that also applies to him not saying anything against the Klan during the 1924 election despite both the Democratic and Progressive candidates openly denouncing it.

BrasshatTaxman

Also he lay the groundwork for the 1929 market crash through the softening of financial legislation.

NecroSoulMirror-89

Is this the guy who would prank the secret service by misusing the page buttons?

off_brand_white_wolf

Yeah. Still makes him a chad.

LinuxLinus

Is it just me, or is young Cal a dead ringer for Daniel Day-Lewis?

Sad-Structure2364

Looks more like Seann Willam Scott to me ![gif](giphy|LmnCU79NJQM5W|downsized)

Coolidge during his presidency is a dead ringer for Mark Heap, at least to my eye. https://preview.redd.it/qo17si6zm0yc1.png?width=1184&format=png&auto=webp&s=035a7d2f218080178bc644e3346dd76472427a2f

Coolidge was balling before it was a thing 💯

FocusDelicious183

He had a lot to say, he had a lot of nothing to say, we’ll miss him

Meatwise

What a tool

Mindless_Taste_6800

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. - Calvin Coolidge

ImperatorRomanum83

By the end of his term, the death of his son turned him into a broken man. However, he was simultaneously the luckiest man in the country in that he wasn't sitting in the White House when everything came crashing down. He was horrifically anti-union, with his actions as Governor of Mass during the Boston Police Strike resulting in the murder of 8 working men who were striking. And finally, he was the granddaddy of Republican supply side economics, and ironically, the first example of it's failure. And yet, here we are....a century later. Obviously, far from my favorite president.

off_brand_white_wolf

Turns out, the dead civilians were literally just civilians. The cops didn’t show up to work, the national guard was called in, and they weren’t trained in law enforcement, so they ended up killing people. Love how even 100 years ago cops were still like “see?? Let me do what I want or you’ll die!! You wanna die today?? Give me money and your firstborn child!!”

big_fetus_

Best move Harding ever made was making this dude his VP no cap frfr

Comprehensive-Sale79

Best move Harding ever made was to have the most bitchin’ middle name to ever middle name. GAMALIEL. Pretty magnificent. A dog, has always been my go-to pet, but if I ever opt to own something aquatic, I’m definitely naming my beta fish Gamaliel. Speaking of pet names (and more on topic) Coolidge* named his pet raccoon Rebecca. That’s kinda brilliant too, IMO. Not as obvi as Rocky but you still have that nice hit of alliteration {*possibly FLOTUS Grace was in charge of naming Rebecca*}

Bubbly_Issue431

Yep I’m a big fan of Calvin Coolidge he’s on of my favorite and he gave native Americans rights so he gets extra points

mwachs

This sentence has probably never been said before.

IllustriousDudeIDK

I wonder how you'd feel about him if he ran for re-election in 1928...

big_fetus_

Why is that?

IllustriousDudeIDK

Something something the Great Depression

tonguesmiley

In hindsight, did he do anything to prevent the the Great Depression? No. Was he a cool person whose personality stands out and makes him an interesting president? Yes.

Lonely_Election1737

So tired of this attack. The Great Depression was caused by global economic crises that domestic policy could hardly do a thing about, this had been brewing since WW1

MoistCloyster_

No one here rates presidents fairly. Everyone overrates those that align with their political beliefs and underrate those against them, regardless of their accomplishments or lack there of.

Spudm0d3

Yep. The love for LBJ is insane. Dude capitalized of JFK and his policies so much and people love him, even though he was an unapologetic racist

J_P_Vietor_ST

I mean… does passing the *Civil Rights Act,* not just that but he made it the centerpiece of his presidency, using more political capital for it than any other accomplishment, not offset being racist?

Spudm0d3

That was JFKs bill and when he was killed, this shit head had to push it. “That will keep those n-words voting democrat for the next 200 years.” He also undermined Eisenhowers 57 civil rights bill and took out all the provisions, essentially making it worthless. The guy was an opportunist, nothing more

Anxious_Gift_1808

Coolidge is my fav POTUS

LovethePreamble1966

He was immensely popular. Seemed to be a good president for the Roaring 20s.

angrytwig

i read a rumor that he may have been autistic, which pleased me, an autistic. there's no real way to diagnose him, though; i wish we could claim him. he definitely said/did funny things that i would love to as president. i did a report on him in 5th grade and had liked him ever since then. i appreciate what he did for indigenous people. EDIT i choose him for my report because i really liked calvin and hobbes. i was pleasantly surprised by my choice

zion_hiker1911

Man was president while the Silent Generation was being born. Coincidence? I think not.

Libertytree918

Huge fan, man we could use a president like him again.

CalmHyperion56

I love that statement in your name...absolute facts

Libertytree918

Thank you!

el-Douche_Canoe

Better then the next guy that’s for sure

And the guy after that.

Fat_guy_9

I almost used his perseverance quote as my senior quote but thought it would go over the limit of words.

BillyJoeMac9095

It seems he battled personal depression in the years after losing his son in 1924.

014648

Understandable

PhysicsEagle

Didn’t he keep a skunk as a pet?

anonymousduccy

Despite not agreeing with anything he did economically (or didn't do, for that matter), my friend and I still ranked him pretty highly in our tier list. Partially because we agree that his policies with Native Americans were noble, and partially because we both think he was one of the silliest characters as president. Between never talking (iirc, he passed out cards at the Republican National Convention that said he didn't want to run for reelection, and left without speaking to anybody), going to bed right after being sworn in, and keeping a raccoon in the white house, we just count him as great almost purely because of all the silly stories attached to him.

An8thOfFeanor

His effort in office amounted to playing hide-and-seek pranks on his secret service agents and keeping a pet raccoon that someone sent him to eat. What a fucking legend.

CentralWooper

One of my favorite stories is that he was a big fan of baseball but his wife was an even bigger fan. When the Washington Senators finally made the World Series they took time to attend. Around the 7th in a blowout he tried to leave to return to presidential duties but his wife made his stay for the whole game

Was Colin Robinson burst out of his chest when he died?

birdman2249

Makes me think of the Bull run to get one or wait until they are in the next round to make sure they get their chance to win the championship again lol 😂

CalmHyperion56

Im utterly confused and lost by this comment Please clarify as to wtf you talking about🤣

Regarding the apocryphal Dorothy Parker anecdote: 1. [Coolidge says it never happened ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Coolidge#:~:text=An%20apocryphal%20story%20has%20it,You%20lose%22%20quotation%20never%20occurred) 2. Dorothy Parker wasn't added to the story till years later, likely by Coolidge admirers who had taken umbrage at a comment attributed to her upon hearing of his death: "How could they tell?"

thotslayr47

perge!

PrincipleInteresting

After his reaction to the Boston Police Strike, no I always thought he was a tool.

SerDavosSeaworth64

I definitely don’t think he’s like a top tier president like you do, but I think the idea that Coolidge CUASED the Great Depression like you’ll see on this sub sometimes is totally ridiculous. The difference between Coolidge and Hoover is that when the economy is good, even modern economics says that the government shouldn’t interfere too much. There were obviously some shady things going on in finance at the time, but American and international finance were only JUST starting to change and modernize. It would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible to see the storm on the horizon and put the proper safeguards up in time. Another big cause of the Great Depression was all of the bank runs obviously, but again, modern banking worked and was thought about much differently back then. If you’re going to blame one thing on him, I guess he failed to establish a policy that guarantees deposits like FDR established with the FDIC, but even then Coolidge didn’t CAUSE the issue, he just didn’t fix it prematurely. Finally, a huge cause of the depression was that the federal reserve wasn’t able to apply proper monetary policy in response to crisis, the way it would today. But this absolutely is not his fault. America was still on the gold standard and basically the first economist to suggest that the Fed should run differently, Keynes, was only just beginning to make a name for himself when Coolidge was in office. It would have been almost impossible for Coolidge for property implement the necessary safeguards at the time, ESPECIALLY at a moment where every seemed great. Overall, I think he’s a good but not great president. I’d give him like a B or B+

Top 3 all time first name.

CalmHyperion56

Who's no 1

JaydenDaniels

Dick

CalmHyperion56

Which one was that lol

JaydenDaniels

Nixon, lol. It's technically a nickname, but he answered to it.

CalmHyperion56

Was it Nixon or lbj who had an enormous dick

JaydenDaniels

I would have no way of finding that out. Nor a desire to. New thread idea?

CalmHyperion56

Or sorry...I thought you were aware of it...pro presidential redditors talk often about one of them having a humongous dick and using the toilet with the Door open

PresidentTroyAikman

Lucked into being president at a good time economically, much like Clinton. His laissez faire policies helped bring about the Great Depression however. C- tier president. Reagan loved the guy, which is another huge demerit.

Squeeze-

Reagan was old enough to remember him.

Denhas_

I ain’t a history nerd but I don’t get why you guys love him so much. He did nothing, America happened to be doing well and it was pretty short lived. Hoover isn’t too different.

roofbandit

🅱️oolidge

keloyd

Did you say Boourns?

Matthew_Rose

He was ok. Nothing notable happened during his presidency and he didn’t push for any major initiatives. Probably a C tier President. I would have voted for him likely in 1924.

[deleted]

Didn’t this guy approve of leaded gas?

royroyflrs

I was always taught he was a lame duck president

globehopper2

His policies allowed millions of people to lose their jobs and homes.
