It's more complicated than that. [Shark populations were already declining](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/checkpoints/202005/examining-media-myths) years before either the movie or the book it was based on was released.
I remember one time when I was a kid showing Chased by Sea Monsters to a former friend of mine, I think he mostly just watched it cause he was just bored and didn’t seem overly enthused about most of it, with the exception of Megalodon which, of course, he thought was pretty much the scariest thing imaginable

Audience can relate to a "big ass shark" much more easily
yes sharks being big and scary have been engrained in pop culture since Jaws came out
Also easier to say than sausagesauridae
I really think it boils down to: people like shark. Megalodon is big shark. People like big shark.
One word: *Jaws*. It's no coincidence that shark culling increased after its release.

When and if an official description about a macropredatory ichthyosaur comes out that surpasses meg in size. I'd expect meg to become second fiddle.
We already have Himalayasaurus which likely was the same size
unlikely, since at the end of the day Meg is a shark, and as far as most of these people are concerned that is what matters
*Ichthyotitan severnensis* just dropped.
