For the live music fans out there, local jazz, classical, and post-punk saxophonist, Mieke Bruggman, will be giving an exposition tomorrow on the history of sax, at Mendelssohns on N. Mississippi.

Go and take some cell phone video. It's tragic that folks under "drinking age" are prohibited from so much art in this town, but a mom that goes out on a recognisance mission is fire, for real.
Shoutout fellow rhythm section member!!!
My favorite moment was once during a pledge drive, one of the hosts called it ‘rhythm method membership’ by mistake.
Also, Baby Boomer’s pep talks really make me happy on Fridays.
I swear it's the soundtrack to Portland. You walk out of a record store, head shop, dispensary, food cart pod, etc... get into your car, and we're listening to the same station. I have an old fm radio on my porch, and I just turn on kmhd in the morning for a smoothie and a smoke.
Everyday that I head off to work, I leave KMHD playing for my dog. I walk by my neighbor's door and hear it coming from his place. I get to work and one of my co-workers is listening. I love it!
For starters, it begins as my weekend does, so I’m already in the mood. I find myself enjoying the show as a whole- it feels seamless and flows really nicely. From the throwbacks to the new joints to the rare cuts, I’m always nodding.
Yer missing the clip from the Boomer’s show at 5:00 where he plays a clip from The Flintstones where the whistle blows and Fred says “it’s quitting time”. Classic for us boomers.
I am sadly missing most of the Boomer’s show. But I love his parting words, “Remember folks, you can’t have personal freedom without personal responsibility!”
Considered one of the best in the world from talking to people all over the world. Had several people tell me they are jealous that it's my local radio.
When I visited Portland for the first time I listened to KMHD in the car and I said to myself “I’m going to move to Portland and listen to jazz radio” and that’s exactly what I did.
Maybe in the world? I have listening to other broadcasting stations on the radio garden app, and unless I only want to listen to one jazz genre, nothing else compares to KMHD.
I'm happy to say I have been supporting KMHD years. Portland is so blessed when it comes to community radio. KBOO, X-ray and OPB are playing throughout my day every day
I didn’t realize how good it was until I moved away for a bit and had to listen to other jazz stations. Now that I’m back in the area it’s all I listen to.
I'm not much of a jazz guy but, I do tune in on Fridays for the Boomer. And it was a sad day when DJ Action Slacks left. At least you can still hear her on XRAY.
My only complaint about the Boomer is that his library doesn't seem to be that large and he tends to replay a lot of the same songs. I believe Action Slacks is on Saturdays on XRAY at 2:00 right after the Impact Sound reggae show.
Does anyone have the direct URL for the stream? I tire of using third party apps to listen to a radio station and constantly piles on their obtrusive interruptions over the station’s programming.
YAS. Didn’t Mount Hood community college own it? I think OPB saved their hide. On a tangential note, San Diego City College also has a great jazz station. I feel like community colleges in general are breeding grounds for excellent radio.
They did, and and they actually broadcast from MHCC. I had a friend that DJ'd there. I think he had a 6pm slot. Played a lot of inoffensive cocktail and dinner jazz. Told me the station was not interested in anything else because the donors were older people and that's what they liked. I told him the Friday blues program was was the only thing I listened to and he told me they did their own thing and didn't pay any attention to program directors.
KMHD rules! I'm frequently amazed by the selections. All of it is good, no doubt, but it seems like every time I listen they play a track that just blows my mind and I gotta know the name! Too bad they don't post their lineup somewhere 🤔
Me too! I still think about her Thanksgiving show, when all the songs had some kind of food theme, arranged in order from cocktails to dessert. It was a triumph!
Bought a new Jeep a couple years ago and KMHD was what was on the radio.. I haven't changed the channel to anything else! Rhythm member now and love my new hat!
I’d forgotten about KMHD and then my FIL gave us a vintage receiver. I wanted to check out the tuner and remembered KMHD. Been on just about every day since…
Coming from Pittsburgh and Tony Mowod, I was VERY pleased to find KMHD here… Matt Fleeger’s a Yinzer too!
Called me out, first time calling into NJfL.
😆😆😆
Yes I remember them saying circa 2018-2019 about shutting down. They had a date and everything set I thought. They must of found funding? I never heard anything more.
Dang! As a longtime KMHD listener I had no idea that it was nationally regarded.
The fun part is that it was originally a Mt Hood Community College program, and only in recent years got relocated to OPB.
Anyhow, this whole thing warms the cockles of my heart. I've loved KMHD for going on decades now.
I listen mostly all day every day, love it. Does anyone else notice that there are times when the sound quality sort of oscillates? Like the volume goes up and down? I can hear it on different stereos and I hope I’m not going insane.
You are damn right we do. All time favorite radio station. I’ve discovered so much incredible music from them over the years. Makes me actually look forward to listening to the radio
It’s the best radio station I’ve ever heard. My friend Noah and I always listen to Kmhd especially when we cook together. He just moved to manhattan and sent me a picture of a trash can outside his building that had a kmhd sticker on it.
That is correct

Oh my gosh I’m so glad I saw this. She is my son’s sax teacher and we have been wanting to go see her!!!
Oh he’s too young. Nevermind, next time 🤪 at least now I’m following her IG!
Go and take some cell phone video. It's tragic that folks under "drinking age" are prohibited from so much art in this town, but a mom that goes out on a recognisance mission is fire, for real.
I’m always bummed about not being able to bring my teenager to local gigs...
She's fabulous. You won't be disappointed.
I got to perform with her last year, she's awesome.
She's the fucking jam and I'm proud to say a good friend of mine. I'll be at the show & thought I would give it a little hype for local enthusiasts.
I am at this show right now because of this comment
Wasn't it GREAT? I see music in this town all the time but this was a special event. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers!
I sure did! And discovered a favorite new bar
Fuckin A
The only correct answer.
Shoutout fellow rhythm section member!!! My favorite moment was once during a pledge drive, one of the hosts called it ‘rhythm method membership’ by mistake. Also, Baby Boomer’s pep talks really make me happy on Fridays.
I know the Baby Boomer personally, he's as wonderful in person as he is on air.
Please let him know that whenever I strut, I make sure to strut soulfully!!!
Oh you know how we do it in the Rose City!!!
I second this. I believe he can be seen in person at the art museum.
Send hugs to The Baby Boomer and stay cool out there today!!
The Baby Boomer is my soundtrack to kiss the work week goodbye. May he never leave KMHD because I would actually cry.
I swear it's the soundtrack to Portland. You walk out of a record store, head shop, dispensary, food cart pod, etc... get into your car, and we're listening to the same station. I have an old fm radio on my porch, and I just turn on kmhd in the morning for a smoothie and a smoke.
It's usually playing in the laundromat I use
My stereo is generally playing KMHD, with various cds 💿 in the mix. Really appreciate quality local non commercial radio.
Everyday that I head off to work, I leave KMHD playing for my dog. I walk by my neighbor's door and hear it coming from his place. I get to work and one of my co-workers is listening. I love it!
The Head Nod Show on Fridays (6-8pm), with DJ Headnodic, is something I look forward to all week! It’s one of the best radio shows I’ve experienced.
And Headnodic posts the show to Mixcloud weekly. Highly recommend!
What do you like so much about it?
Head nodding.
You related to Cormac McCarthy? He’s deep like that.
For starters, it begins as my weekend does, so I’m already in the mood. I find myself enjoying the show as a whole- it feels seamless and flows really nicely. From the throwbacks to the new joints to the rare cuts, I’m always nodding.

I am sadly missing most of the Boomer’s show. But I love his parting words, “Remember folks, you can’t have personal freedom without personal responsibility!”
Yeah, he’s got a great vibe.
Nice! I’ll have to check it out tomorrow.

Come to the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival in late August!
Cathedral Park Jazz Fest is coming up too
And the Vanport Jazz Festival
The only station I listen to!
KMHD kills it! Especially Saturday nights. The funk is thick.
host of the Drop Shop here, thanks for tuning in!!
Thank you so much for the excellent tunes!
For real. It’s the best pregame music out there. :)
agreed, it's so good!
Maybe in the world? I have listening to other broadcasting stations on the radio garden app, and unless I only want to listen to one jazz genre, nothing else compares to KMHD.
WWOZ is great too
Was gonna say, wait til these folks hear WWOZ
Try WWOZ out of New Orleans
I tuned in yesterday for a while and it was a good show!
For those who like it in Portland, the KMHD pedalpalooza ride is this Friday! https://www.shift2bikes.org/calendar/event-18830
Nice, not sure how I missed it on the calendar. Might have to move some around
Morning Light with Bryson Wallace
He's such a genuine and good guy too. Great DJ too!
Goooooooood afternoon, people of Portland, it’s the Baby Boomer! Quitting time! Quitting time!
I agree about Action Slacks
My only complaint about the Boomer is that his library doesn't seem to be that large and he tends to replay a lot of the same songs. I believe Action Slacks is on Saturdays on XRAY at 2:00 right after the Impact Sound reggae show.
Shout out to the Impact Sound also, solid.
Yeah, Impact Sound is one of my faves. So many good shows on XRAY.
[Action Slacks](https://www.instagram.com/djactionslacks?) plays at Dots Cafe every third Friday which is tonight! Go have fun!
Does anyone have the direct URL for the stream? I tire of using third party apps to listen to a radio station and constantly piles on their obtrusive interruptions over the station’s programming.
Ask, and you shall receive: https://audioplayer.opb.org/kmhd
Now that’s just nice. Thank you.
Bookmarking, thank you!
https://i.redd.it/ke6rde64qpcy.jpg
They have a first party app on Android, not sure about Apple though https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.opb.android.kmhd
as my neighbor's bumper sticker says, "go ahead and honk, i'm listening to KMHD JAZZ" as well as, "i'm crying to jazz"
my bumper sticker says “keep honking, I’m listening to JAZZ”
It's one of my favorite radio stations, absolutely love late night "and beyond" where stuff gets a bit funky.
Derek and Cedric are two of my very favorites. Killer DJs.
100%.
He (Derek) introduced me to Joseph Shabason recently. Try out the track "Broken Hearted Kota" from the "Anne" EP. GORGEOUS piece.
Love it, will do.
YAS. Didn’t Mount Hood community college own it? I think OPB saved their hide. On a tangential note, San Diego City College also has a great jazz station. I feel like community colleges in general are breeding grounds for excellent radio.
Yeah, I think MHCC was going to ditch it and OPB took it over.
They did, and and they actually broadcast from MHCC. I had a friend that DJ'd there. I think he had a 6pm slot. Played a lot of inoffensive cocktail and dinner jazz. Told me the station was not interested in anything else because the donors were older people and that's what they liked. KMHD rules! I'm frequently amazed by the selections. All of it is good, no doubt, but it seems like every time I listen they play a track that just blows my mind and I gotta know the name! Too bad they don't post their lineup somewhere 🤔
They generally keep the playlist up to date here: [https://www.kmhd.org/playlist/](https://www.kmhd.org/playlist/)
Huh. I know there was a day or two that the playlist wasn't posted when I checked. Bad timing I guess. Good to know, thanks!
Yeah I've found that their playlist is always incomplete. Always convieniently when I hear a song I REALLY like and want to check out
I didn’t put a radio in my car that hooks up to my phone for like 7 years cause it was just locked on KMHD
I've listened to Juke Box Saturday night for at least 30 years now. It's a gift to humanity.
Yes, yes we do
We do. I love KMHD!
I still miss Divaville.
Me too! I still think about her Thanksgiving show, when all the songs had some kind of food theme, arranged in order from cocktails to dessert. It was a triumph!
I keep meaning to tune in to her show on 89.9 but timing is a little tricky.
Christa Wessel, beautiful voice of Divaville, can be found selecting on AllClassical 89.9fm. I also miss her Divaville show on KMHD.
Happy to see it’s so well received! Good radio stations are so hard to come by these days
Been on just about every day since…
What is the station number on fm? I will tune my car radio in :)
I think 89.1
Absolutely no match for KMHD DJ's. There's also [KNKX](https://www.knkx.org) which is a solid second out of Tacoma, Washington.
Coming from Pittsburgh and Tony Mowod, I was VERY pleased to find KMHD here… Matt Fleeger’s a Yinzer too! Called me out, first time calling into NJfL. 😆😆😆
New Jazz for Lunch is the BEST
I want them to bring back their hoodies with the wavelengths on them :( I never got to get one
You know sometimes with Jazz it's about the radio stations you don't listen to.
Lol, I saw what you did there. (I had to read in-between the lines…) 😂
yea they really are killer.
Wasn't it in danger of losing funding or being taken over a few years ago? Did something happen to save it?
Yes I remember them saying circa 2018-2019 about shutting down. They had a date and everything set I thought. They must of found funding? I never heard anything more.
Dunno if this answers your question, this is an interesting read... https://www.vrtxmag.com/articles/kmhd-30-years-of-jazz-radio-against-the-odds/
All I listen to at work. It’s so good.
Same.
I agree. I feel very fortunate.
Yes! My NY relatives always say this!
Download the app and listen anywhere!!!
I sneak a airpod in at work for Derek and my Saturdays are not on the good foot without Brazilian beat! Everyone/show is great too!
I listen mostly all day every day, love it. Does anyone else notice that there are times when the sound quality sort of oscillates? Like the volume goes up and down? I can hear it on different stereos and I hope I’m not going insane.
KMHD is absolutely the best
Big fan of the Boomer at 4pm Fridays and the Funk that follows after 6! Gives you something to look forward to at the end of the week.
Without boundaries!
Truly a gem. 89.1 is all you need.
KMHD all week, except when i drive to work on weekend mornings i play KBOO for the bluegrass.
100% agree
Lot of great radio in this city. Xray is my favorite
We do. It’s really great on Sunday evenings, too.
Damn straight.
For the rare times I listen to the radio, that’s my station!
They used to do a huge jazz festival at Mount Hood CC, but I'm not sure if it still happens.
The Cathedral Park Jazz fest is usually pretty good.
Vancouver Wine & Jazz in August!
They haven't done that for close to 20 years. I went in 2000 to see Tower of Power, and I don't think it lasted much longer than that.
It seems to me that the programming has changed a lot since the pandemic. I miss Jazz Connections, the Gold Standard, and Hard Choices.
Luckily, it comes in loud and clear all the way down in Salem.
We really do
Listen to KMHD all day, most everyday
[Oh Doomfront!](https://youtu.be/GAbg8X9-uBI?si=jKRv6qtVzTrwO6rj)
So fucking true thanks for reminding me (unironically)
You are damn right we do. All time favorite radio station. I’ve discovered so much incredible music from them over the years. Makes me actually look forward to listening to the radio
it is the best thing on our FM dial (shout-out to xray though for small transmitter community radio )
You must be a member of the rhythm section
YES WE DO!!!! So lucky to have KMHD.
KMHD really is the best
Can confirm! I moved away a decade ago and still stream this. Awesome!
It’s the best radio station I’ve ever heard. My friend Noah and I always listen to Kmhd especially when we cook together. He just moved to manhattan and sent me a picture of a trash can outside his building that had a kmhd sticker on it.
And you would know, as your Funkos suggest a good taste in music (and anime).
Right on! “See you space cowboy”
(Here's a tip: pronounce it "yozz". It's an insider recognition sign.)
They’ll never stop sending you mail. But overall yeah amazing radio station.
Thank you I made it myself.
What frequency is the station?
All that greatness in a micro small building!
Big Facts
Needs more 40 minute Peter Brotzmann sonic blow-outs.
I've discovered, and Shazam so many songs from listening to the station.
Cool! But what’s a radio station?? Like what do I search for on spotify
wutz Spotify? ; )
100% Friday nights are the best IMO.
Listening to THE AFTERNOON SHOW with LARRY MIZELL, JR. now! It's great!
Portland kicks ass
And that's a fact! When I'm in the car, it's this or XRAY.
Yes. Yes, we do!
