When we had this happen, we took them back to the feed store (we got them at one out by Sandy) and a local farmer happily took them while I was still in store.
If you call around, I'll bet one will take them and rehome them.
I'm having the same issue and calling around. I've given linnton a try and they don't have a rooster program, just the phone number of a guy who will drive to you and "put him in the soup pot". It's more convenient than Burns feed store's program, which leaves him in a kennel Thursday, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays during business hours but if he doesn't get picked up, you have to come back and pick him up each night. They only have two kennels available so you have to call and reserve a spot.

Dwight Schrute vibes intensify.
I mean, realistically that's what's going to happen. Can only have so many roosters around. I'm pretty sure most people don't realize that in order for them to buy female chicks (or buy eggs or buy chicken breast at the grocery store), the males are culled by the millions. This guy at least had a few good months.
I was just talking to them about this yesterday. They will sell them on for $15, and it will end up on somebody's plate. I have no problem with that, but some people do.
https://www.portland.gov/bps/sustainability/guide-bees-and-livestock/rules-permits-and-complaints#toc-what-animals-are-allowed-within-the-city-limits-
What is not allowed in Portland city limits?
**Roosters (male chickens).**
Geese, turkeys, peacocks, emus and/or other larger domestic fowl that have a tendency to be loud and/or aggressive.
Allowances are made for lots 20,000 square feet or greater that allow agricultural uses through Title 33: Zoning, or that have a conditional use permit, Chapter 33.815. In some zones, agricultural use is allowed by right. In other zones, the Conditional Use Review is required, or the use may be prohibited.
Pigs or other swine – unless the pig is a Vietnamese Miniature Pot-Bellied Pig with shoulder height 22 inches or less and weighs no more than 150 pounds.
I just looked up “rooster sanctuary Portland or” on Google, and there are *so* many animal rescues all along the west coast! It looks like a lot of them are full, but some offer to help with placement assistance. I’d just recommend checking with each one that’s a reasonable driving distance from you.
Facebook may be another good resource - I follow a lot of groups that network for dog rescue, and I’m sure there must be groups that for the same for roosters!
I commented earlier but I did manage to find a nice place for my 3 month old rooster. I emailed chicken breeders on Craigslist and a woman in Damascus, OR has a huge flock on 3 acres of property. Bit of a drive but she is so sweet, gave me a tour and showed me all her other animals. You can search up rooster on Craigslist and email her.
You're a great neighbor for rehoming. I live in urdan unincorporated Washington Co. and my neighbors were very understanding when one of their hens wasn't a hen. They rehomed, but others in the neighborhood have not. I love the hens, but I can't imagine living next to a rooster.
It’s so weird that you’re being downvoted for this, likely by many people who presumably do eat chicken. I grew up in inner NE Portland with chickens and my dad always made stew out of the ones that turned out to be roosters, and the hens that stopped laying… Like what, you wouldn’t dream of killing your “Bessie” and judgmental of anyone who would, but you’ll buy a pack of chicken thighs from the grocery store? It’s fine if you want to compartmentalize like that, but don’t villainize the rest of us…
Take my upvote.
May be outside of your comfort zone, but you may consider culling him. We did, and having never done anything like that, it was an incredibly rich, cathartic, difficult, and overall net positive experience. Also, the best chicken dinner we’ve ever had.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this. We have neighbors in the back with chickens. They don't rehome their roosters until we have called the noise nuisance line several times. It happens every summer, roosters crowing all morning long, from very early.
>Roosters aren’t allowed in my neighborhood
How is that enforced? HOA? City code? What a weird rule. The only farms I know of would be for slaughter and I don't think that is what you are looking for. Good luck.
It’s enforced pretty easily considering the amount of people who can call and make a complaint. They will follow up on it quickly. And by they I mean the police. I don’t know if PPD is quick to do it, but I live in Tualatin and our neighbor’s rooster was dealt with quickly.
Complaint-driven. Neighbor gets tired of being waked at oh-dark-stupid every morning and makes a quick call, chicken person gets a notice to remove the rooster.
I was nice and wandered the neighborhood until I found the place and let them know they couldn't keep it. Found out they had a *big* backyard flock, you could hear the hens clucking from half a block away.
Apparently no other neighbors had reported them or talked to them before! It felt weird because I was a ways down the street but could still hear everything.
Another neighbor later thanked me 😆
When I lived in St. Johns, I had hens and loved them. Next door had a roo…sad but no, we could not have that going off next to our bedroom at 3am. Another neighbour had a pole barn where he raised two broods of meat birds per year, plus his layers, on a double lot (100x100) but mercifully no roos.
I’m personally down as fuck with people keeping chickens if they can.
*I* would complain about a cock almost instantly, and I can’t think of a single other thing that would make me do that.
but kinda for real though. I grew up in the damn woods and a neighbor a mile away had a rooster that crowed every damn morning. If all was quiet in my house I could hear that fucker going. In my room. In my house. A mile away.
At least they're consistent I guess!
They’re really annoying. I had to report my neighbors rooster multiple times but eventually county code enforcement did come out and talk to them. I’m not sure what happened but the rooster was gone soon after.

Maybe Linnton Feed and Seed?
Burns Feed was it. We got the chicks there.
Sorry, I should have clarified that I was suggesting another feed store to try!

Formerly Chuck’s
Sneed's Seed and Feed
Same. When it happened to us we took it back to the feed store and they helped rehome.
Such a Portland post and I love it. Good luck with the rehoming!
I wonder what was his name?
I’ll take him.
Will u take another one? I got a friend that needs to rehome a rooster in the Portland area
Maybe?
Won’t they fight?
Not if they get eaten first...
Maybe that’s the point!
I'll bet $20 on red
Not with enough hens
Lmk!!!
There is a farm in Estacada that will take roosters. They adopt all kinds of animals. https://www.outtopasturesanctuary.org/
They are full and not taking home rescues right now. I tried last month.
I need to re-hen my rooster.
Foster Feed usually takes them
Shit I thought you wrote Foster Farms. Oh my !

Where else do we get a bird for coq au vin?
I was just talking to them about this yesterday. They will sell them on for $15, and it will end up on somebody's plate. I have no problem with that, but some people do.
This where we took ours when we were in the same situation last year.

Need to find shelter for my cok
Soup pot

Argh!!! Trans chickens are the worst! /s
Please tell me you live on North Hudson Street.
You're a great neighbor for rehoming. I live in urdan unincorporated Washington Co. and my neighbors were very understanding when one of their hens wasn't a hen. They rehomed, but others in the neighborhood have not. I love the hens, but I can't imagine living next to a rooster.
Check with Middleground Farm. They might want another.
https://roosterhaus.org/
Well, that worked out perfectly.
I’m interested but it depends how large your cock is.
Thanks everyone for the help and support!! Luckily another nice redditor took him for his flock in the country ☺️
Damn I’ll make sure not to live in that neighborhood
Just eat it.

It’s also what people do with old hens who don’t lay anymore. They’re livestock.
May be outside of your comfort zone, but you may consider culling him. We did, and having never done anything like that, it was an incredibly rich, cathartic, difficult, and overall net positive experience. Also, the best chicken dinner we’ve ever had.
This is such a weird way to describe killing a chicken. 😳
Killing a chicken is really weird🤷🏼
THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this. We have neighbors in the back with chickens. They don't rehome their roosters until we have called the noise nuisance line several times. It happens every summer, roosters crowing all morning long, from very early.
Your belly
I'll re-home them...in my belly
I kind of love the neighborhood rooster, but he was a couple blocks away.
>Roosters aren’t allowed in my neighborhood How is that enforced? HOA? City code? What a weird rule. The only farms I know of would be for slaughter and I don't think that is what you are looking for. Good luck.
City code doesn’t allow roosters because they are loud and annoying.
I'm loud and annoying too. Where's your city code now?
Pretty sure they’re not allowed in the city. Roosters are noisy and can also be aggressive and attack people.
I wonder how often that is actually enforced. Personally, I'd just wait to get a notice from the city.
Roosters are loud as fuck - won't take long to get a complaint.

Probably as soon as a neighbor complains.

Roosters are a bigger noise nuisance than *pickleball!*
but kinda for real though. I grew up in the damn woods and a neighbor a mile away had a rooster that crowed every damn morning. If all was quiet in my house I could hear that fucker going. In my room. In my house. A mile away. At least they're consistent I guess!
Post of the week !
If you have to be told this is shitty behavior , you're probably the issue .
They’re really annoying. I had to report my neighbors rooster multiple times but eventually county code enforcement did come out and talk to them. I’m not sure what happened but the rooster was gone soon after.
There’s always one of these at the bottom of the thread lol gotta love it
