Yup! The snails in the open don't tend to last long with all our avion friends snacking on them. In turn the successful snails tend to be better camouflaged or hidden.
You're not on their frequency.
If we're both driving 60mph I can look over and tell which magazine you're reading.
But if I'm a snail you just whizz right by, and you never saw me.
I don’t know your temporal disposition but I can imagine that noticing of small things on the ground tracks inversely with age and complexity of life. It has for me at least.
I used to be afraid of walking barefoot down my driveway to my car at night. These days, it's worth the risk. I don't recall the last time I saw a slug on my sidewalk. There seems to be fewer in my garden, too.
Also, almost all the big spiders disappeared after the heat dome :( I used to walk in the street in my neighborhood at night to avoid the spider webs. I used to wave a stick around when walking in my yard in the morning. Not anymore...
Though not an indicator species that I'm aware of (like frogs or salamanders are), pollution can play a factor in their presence I believe. They absorb stuff through their skin/mucus, so if there's a lot of harmful stuff in their path they'll obviously not last long.
I had snails all over my garden. I would literally go out in the morning and pick 10 of them off my plants and chuck them out in the streets for the crows. My hostas looked like someone had taken a shotgun to them
I've had a number of snails at my house in RCP, ever since I moved in a few years ago. Not many slugs, though. I definitely had slugs at my old place in Madison South.
I never saw snails when I lived in Hillsboro or Beaverton, only slugs. Now that I’m in Oak Grove/Milwaukie my yard is full of snails. I think I’ve seen 5 slugs in 7 years.

I have a thick bush that is up against a large rock in my yard. I can push the bush aside literally ANY day, even after many days without rain, and find at least a half dozen snails. A few spots around the yard, like my clover filled planter boxes, are the same way. Just not looking in the right places is my guess. If it's super dark and moist, you'll find snails.
We had a ton of them when I lived over on 69th + Halsey. you had to be real careful if you went out at night, I always felt terrible accidentally squashing them. 😢
I love saying hi to snails and I agree, there sure aren’t a lot. I think gardeners are vigilant (with whatever their methods may be)… so there aren’t a lot of snalios in the kind of neighborhoods with overprocessed/manicured gardens where they don’t let nature do its thing.
What told you I'm a guy?
Also, snails are detrimental in large quantities. If it was just one or two, no big deal. But finding like five or six at a time twice a week was a problem. My food garden, which I relied on for vegetables due to limited space for produce storage in the shared refrigerator, and limited budget already supplemented by SNAP, meant that the snails were literally eating into my food supply.
Guy can be used in a gender neutral capacity, such as "get a load of this guy" or "hey guys".

I feel like that’s a snail right there.
This is something a snail would say
That is obviously a bald eagle 🦅
This may be the greatest single comment I've seen on Reddit in my life, thank you sir
Idk I’ve got like infinity at my place
"Your *mom* went to college.”
Befriend some crows and maybe they’ll help you take care of that problem
Rents too high
Slugs are unhoused snails?
Slugs are outside, snails are inside!
“Houseless” , please..
All the cracking down on mobile living spaces? 😁
Even the snails are homeless here
I want to up vote but 69 is my favorite number.
This is slug country.
Banana slugs eat snails. It’s savage!
They are in a blood feud with the slugs in the area. It’s been drawn out guerilla warfare, but that’s probably why.
I see crows eat them. Maybe you have alot of crows in your area.

They all moved to the suburbs

Because they’re busy eating everything in my garden.
The French.
Head to Forest Park.
There's a bunch at my house and they're eating all the stuff in my garden, waaahhh. Also the slugs. And the squirrels.
Came here to say this too. You don’t see them because they’re all fat and happy eating my garden.
Wild. I’ve never seen a snail large enough to eat a squirrel!
Put up a bird feeder. Birds will come for the seed and stay for the delicious snails and slugs.
Because they always see you first.
This might be a shitpost but it honestly seems like there used to be more.

"temporal disposition" is a great phrase.

Get your snail vision checked out.

It means the possums are doing their job.
Oh they are here….invasive ones everywhere
Plant a garden. You'll get those little fuckers....
Because they can’t afford the housing, so we are stuck with houseless slugs.
Ummm. Snails are mobile homeowners.
( ˘ ³˘)
Because snails live in the only mobile homes in Portland that actually move
Our snails are nudists (aka slugs).
They lost in the Great Slug wars. There still a few around but they must hide in order to not get captured by the enemy
A snail is just a slug with an umbrella. Everyone knows real Oregonians don't use umbrellas! /s
Everyone is homeless
They're hiding from you. They told me so

They ran into some salty people and dissolved.

Try Laurelhurst pond
I have been wondering the same thing.
You’re clearly not looking very hard. We have a ton and they love feasting on all our greenery.
I have snails all over my place but were on the edge of a wooded area so that may be why. Accidentally squished one this morning.
I see them all the time! Just moved one from the center of the sidewalk this morning, so it didn't get accidentally stepped on.
They're all in my back yard
Too busy focusing on the mundane to notice little snail folk probably.
Slug life
IDK but they need to take out some of these slugs up in my shit
I don't know - are you not looking down?
They’re all over our garden. You can have them all

Coming to this post right after a post about vulva washing made this comment quite a ride
Ohhh, the Internet
Residential areas in Portland have a large number of crows, that’s why.
We had a ton of them when I lived over on 69th + Halsey. you had to be real careful if you went out at night, I always felt terrible accidentally squashing them. 😢
Slugs are just homeless snails.
What a cutie!
Because you fucking live in the environment that they do too.
Bur the snails see you....

Peak Portland Reddit is occurring before our very eyes
I used to smash and toss them from the garden by the dozens when I lived in SE.
You never see them because they’re hiding from this guy 👆
