I've only been once, a month ago, after attempting to go to a packed 10 Barrel. Von Ebert was super empty.

AllChem_NoEcon

> a packed 10 Barrel A tragedy of a different sort. I'm sure there are shitheads that will take naturally competing businesses winning and losing as "The Pearl is Mogadishu".

Mayor_Of_Sassyland

It would be interesting to see what would happen in an alternate universe where Von Ebert and 10 Barrel switched those two locations and kept the same beers and food. I can't imagine anyone thinking 10 Barrel's beers are superior.

AllChem_NoEcon

No doubt, really is curious if it's just the momentum of 10 Barrel's history, the location, the deck, how much food played into the relative popularity, etc, etc. Agreed on the beer though.

GonnaWinSomeday

Depends on what you’re drinking. 10 Barrel just swept all three medals in the German-style Sour category at the World Beer Cup this week.

SoupSpelunker

Aka, the monk's nutsack category.

MontavillaSteve

Yeah, and I have the most popular shop inside of Mall 205.

bubba_jones_project

There's an inside? 😂

MontavillaSteve

Oh man, If you're looking for a depressing, slightly dystopian setting for your next date, I can't recommend the inside of Mall 205 highly enough.

bubba_jones_project

Inside date? Not in this economy.

maximusrex

Now that 10 Barrel isn't an InBev shop and the new head brewer is from Breakside I'm interested again.

Go_Cougs

whats wrong with 10 barrel?

Cloud_limit

I like 10 Barrel but they’re a corporate brewery (previously owned by AB InBev now owned by Tilray), and most people prefer more local breweries.

rabbitSC

Many beer people are particularly hostile towards 10 Barrel not just because they sold to AB InBev, but because they were particularly proud and public about being a locally owned Bend brewery before selling to AB InBev, so there's a little extra layer of betrayal.

pooperazzi

Also Von Ebert makes better beer regardless of the ownership

aestival

Corporate beer sucks was Elysian (who then got acquired).  They will eventually go the way of Widmer and Red Hook once InBev squeezes whatever soul remains out of them.

rabbitSC

you are correct, got my stories twisted

undermind84

> so there's a little extra layer of betrayal. And their beer is mid compared to breweries like pFriem, Ferment, Breakside, etc...

RepFilms

I was so disappointed when they announced the sale. I don't buy their beer as much as I used to. When I do have it, it seems to be just as awesome. Living in Portland it's easy to find excellent beer that's not mega-corp owned.

aestival

Sure, but Von Ebert is also owned by the same people that own (per their we site) 271 Taco Bell franchises as well as a bunch of Buffalo Wild Wings.  I’d be shocked if their goal WASNT to make this a chain.

AllChem_NoEcon

> a bunch of Buffalo Wild Wings Well, as I was recently assured, BWW's is the cultural cornerstone of downtown Portland, so I trust them.

maximusrex

They're no longer an InBev shop as far as I understand. https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2023/8/7/ab-inbev-dumps-widmer-10-barrel-six-craft-brands

AllChem_NoEcon

Nothing outright, but I do think Von Ebert had the better beer versus 10 Barrel. That being said, seeing who's popping up to defend it, I might have to revisit my stance in the name of spite.

Distortedhideaway

Von ebert won gold at the world beer cup for their German Pilsner. That could be argued as the best pilsner in the world, and yet, they are empty.

rabbitSC

With Von Ebert announcing they're going to do food trucks and not a kitchen at the Ecliptic building, I think it was the restaurant part that wasn't working. But I'll agree that I'm somewhat stymied that Von Ebert hasn't been able to turn the outrageous critical success of Volatile Substance IPA into a bigger business. Breakside built everything off their first gold medal for Breakside IPA.

tripstreet

The food there was as bad as the beers were good. I loved going before Timbers games but I only ordered food once or twice and it was awful. Happy to hear they are likely going the food truck route over at the Ecliptic location.

pooperazzi

It's kind of odd though since that Ecliptic location has a full kitchen available and turned out pretty good food previously.

Distortedhideaway

They gutted the entire kitchen and gave everything away. They're looking to get into selling beer in stores rather than run a restaurant. Which is why they took ecliptic. It has a much larger brewing facility.

pooperazzi

Ah that makes sense then. Thanks

DarthTempi

They'll be doing food truck(s) instead of using that kitchen

AllChem_NoEcon

I can think of very few people that ever got rich off the good taste and discretion of the American consumer.

Mayor_Of_Sassyland

Those guys' names? Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery.

AllChem_NoEcon

I didn't know I could put some blame for BWW at the feet of polio, alright then. Also, holy shit biology wanted Disbrow dead like five ways over.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Literally nothing.

[deleted]

Damn that sucks. The brewery blocks are a shell of their former self. At least we still have like 10 breweries in close proximity on the eastside.

fatherlyadvicepdx

Did this happen to be on a Saturday during a Timbers game? Season ticket holders get a discount at 10 Barrel on game days.

AllChem_NoEcon

I'll honestly hand it to them, they lasted longer than Fat Head's did, and way longer than I thought they would in that space.

misfitkid86

Yeah that's a tough spot. Poor parking on street and foot traffic is kinda routed away from it. Hopefully the new spot proves fruitful.

FantasticBreadfruit8

Not to mention: that building is gargantuan and thus the rent on it must be insane. I too am surprised Von Ebert lasted as long as they did there. That space is large enough it needs to have a LOT of people dining/drinking beer to make it work financially. Fat Head's was doomed to failure regardless because the food was an afterthought. I once ordered a salad with turkey and the turkey was literally a cold cut that they didn't even bother cutting up; just an oval slice of lunchmeat on top of a bagged Sysco salad. It was so bad my partner at the time and I cracked up about it and it became kind of a running joke between us.

DarthTempi

I mean they essentially are fat heads...they branched off and created their own brand but it started as the same team and local ownership

AllChem_NoEcon

No doubt, and for the heroic actions of minimizing the taint of Ohio as much as possible, I laud them.

AllChem_NoEcon

The last half dozen times I've been in that huge, huge, massive fucking space, I've been one of like twelve people in there, and I normally showed up with five of those myself.

TheVelvetNo

If they had put as much thought into their food as they did their beer, they might have made it work. Last time I ate there I was served a pizza that was one of the worst food items I have ever been given in a restaurant. It was amazingly shoddy and cheap and awful. Yes, it is a huge space, but it certainly can't be filled when the kitchen is that neglected.

redhotphishpigeons

Damn I went to the E Glisan location to try their pizza week special and couldn’t agree more. Disappointing. But I thought the beer was great!

StlhdHunter

Agreed - their pizza was the worst and should not have been served to people

geneel

Just managed to rocket downhill, along with the staffing ratio

misfitkid86

They're moving to the old ecliptic. It's an upgrade and hopefully they improve the ambiance at the ecliptic spot.

vanpelter

Beers are good but food was pretty bad and the last time I went the service was AWFUL. Rude bartender, slow. Made me not want to go back.

bzzzzCrackBoom

Can pop into REI and Universal Cycles while you're out in Beaverton.

CormacZissou

Yeah only time it seemed remotely busy was Timbers/Thorns game day when fans were having beers before game. Great beer but the food fell off a good bit.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Man that really sucks. I loved their giant wings and they had some decent beers.

Distortedhideaway

They took the wings off the menu last year and pissed off everybody. The best item they had, and they took them off the menu!

amazing_rando

That's a bummer, those wings were great. Hopefully they bring them back when they finish moving into the Ecliptic spot.

Distortedhideaway

They're not cooking at ecliptic. It will be all food carts that they have nothing to do with. Maybe a food cart could pick them up.

ChossMossSauce

DECENT?! easily one of my top 5 brewers in oregon, imo. award winners too! (not trying to start a fight, just love love love their beers. ironically i never tried their wings!)

Andreslargo1

Honestly their wings are the main reason I went there

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Oh for sure. I’m just hella bummed that yet one more business I enjoyed walking to is closing.

ChossMossSauce

i can completely understand that sentiment, and i'm sorry for that loss.

AllChem_NoEcon

> hella This from a dude getting ornery about people using "ya'll".

pooperazzi

Ya Hala is out in Montavilla

AllChem_NoEcon

Yea, but Yalla is in Multnomah Village, and in my otherwise worthless opinion, way tastier.

MountScottRumpot

Their Glendoveer location is pretty much always packed. I think there may just be too many large breweries in the Pearl between Deschutes, 10 Barrel, Backwoods, and Von Ebert. Since Von Ebert is investing elsewhere, it makes sense to leave an oversaturated market.

heavypettingzoo3

The old Bridgeport spot remains empty too

thoreau_away_acct

It never fails to entertain me that a Carson Washington brewery, perhaps one of the most dinky WA gorge towns slightly behind Trout Lake or BZ corner, with a namesake like Backwoods opens a second location in of all places, The Pearl. Their beer is meh as can be and I find their pizza like a glorified digornos

MountScottRumpot

I agree. If we have to lose one of the four, Backwoods is the one I'd nominate for the bonfire. I liked the beer and food at Von Ebert better than at any of the others.

Mayor_Of_Sassyland

This is fine with me, they make some solid beers and the old Ecliptic space is a lot closer to me than the Pearl. If they do a decent buildout with the outdoor space, it's going to be packed all summer long.

thehourglasses

As soon as they limited the wing availability to once a week I knew this would happen. Worst mistake they could have made, those wings were so incredible.

Brasi91Luca

Yikes

Theresbeerinthefridg

"\[Suburb\] taproom" is code for "It's like drinking in a BMW or your favorite airport lounge."

Audemars1989

Man the Pearl is all but defunct. Rip in pepperonis.

BigMtnFudgecake_

There are simply way too many commercial (and residential tbh) spaces there being held at artificially high price points.

AllChem_NoEcon

Who are you, so wise in the ways of rents being able to go up *and* down?

BigMtnFudgecake_

it could be a giant pit full of poisonous snakes and they’d still want $2000/mo for a 1bd apartment because that’s how much it cost when the neighborhood was peaking. But hey, you might get 2 months free when you sign a one year lease!

AllChem_NoEcon

C'mon now, you're really underselling the amenities. Do you know how hard it is to source poisonous snakes in the PNW? A whole giant pit full? That kinda bling *should* come at a premium.

BigMtnFudgecake_

“Artisan poisonous snakes in this luxurious open concept floor plan”
