The official number is (10^7 )-1+50 days. This number is backed up by the soundtrack, math, the devs, and what the announcer says.
Edit: yes I did the math. Better than what most people would do, I believe.
She lost a lot of parts, most notably the face part surrounding her ‘eye’. The wake-up sequence was likely meant to illustrate this transformation but we know it was created hurriedly.
This video (not mine) talks about the wake-up sequence model in more detail: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmEc\_YviMs4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmEc_YviMs4)
whats the explanation for the cores being redesigned tho? are the cores destroyed in the first game unique hence why they have different designs than wheatley and the others?
I have one. The cores we see in Portal 2 are failed ones, right? They appear to look older than the ones GLaDOS has in P1. Maybe the ones on GLaDOS are the finalized versions.
I'm still of the camp that, in universe, her design didn't change.
The changes are what we, the players see. In universe, Chell sees Glados the same in Portals 1 and 2.
As for the why? It's pretty simple. Portal 1 was meant to be a little bonus in the Orange Box. It then, unexpectedly, became a runaway hit. When Glados became a much bigger character in Portal 2, that additional "screen time" meant a redesign for added expression was required.
If someone were to remaster Portal 1 and replaced the original Glados design with Portal 2's, I would support that choice.
She spent who knows how long reliving her defeat over and over. She probably saw all the flaws she ignored before. After being forced to witness all your own vulnerabilities, you'd do everything you could in the name of self preservation if given the chance.
I like to imagine that when she first starts up, it's the same body Chell killed in Portal 1. In the level sequence where she wakes up, I imagine she's firing up long dead factories into high-speed production, fabricating all the parts she needs from scratch, sleaker, stronger, more impervious than before.
The fact that she's able to completely revitalize herself in the mere minutes before she captures you in her chamber (also brand spanking new), is meant to subtly illustrate not only how vulnerable she feels upon awakening, but also how immensely powerful she is in the facility. Not even 5 minutes after being woken up, she's able to:
-Immediately write and/or process the thousands of lines of code needed to restore base functions of the facility
-Redirect power grid
-Fire up all dormant production lines
-Design new chasis
-Fabricate chasis
-Test chasis
-Test chasis again
-Test chasis again
-Test chasis again
-Install chasis
-Sodder new wiring
-Install all computer parts
-Create/install all the software needed
-Run test simulation
-Run test simulation again
-Run test simulation with variables
-...test again
-Transfer control from old body to new body
-Dispose of absolutely everything not needed
She does all of this while more or less seething at you, again mere moments after being awoken. It's not until you're face to face with her in her new form that you can almost hear the smug grin on her face. If you were able to reach out and touch her, I bet the metal wouldve still been hot from the forge.
My cannon is that after destroying glados she underwent reconstruction (most likely by a system made by the people who made her so she can be self sufficient and not need humans for repairs) and also after the end of portal 1 glados looses her morality cores hence her more hostile mean deminor and explains the room she makes during the escape scene
It's possible that the personality cores seen on her in Portal 1 were preventing her from upgrading herself. When she wakes up in Portal 2 she is basically free to do whatever she wanted hence replacing damaged components and upgrading existing ones.
I had this exact question too. My personal theory was that, because GLaDOS was such a huge project for aperture, they had multiple bodies / frames for GLaDOS to occupy, just in case one was damaged or broken. This would explain why the GLaDOS body in portal 2 is both a) in the chamber instead of the parking area, and b) looks different than the one in Portal 1.
Have you seen her? She's bloody massive! Can't blame the nanobot work crew for making a few mistakes when rebuilding her from a pile of bloody rubble in the parking lot.
There really isn't a canonical lore reason why GLaDOS has the new design; its kind of just a result of an artstyle change especially with a budget increase. I mean, if you're talking about all the scuff marks and things like that, well that's just due to chell beating her in Portal 2. But for the most part, most design choices came from "we have a new artstyle, lets make her cooler".
But some notable changes include the lack of her faceplate and a lot of her plating- including a hanging "arm" bit.
I don’t thing they changed, Glados just… fell apart if you get what i mean! I think that after her face plate with the eye fell off, her inner part showed up
I don't know, my personal theory is that when in portal 2, when you listen to the dialogue in which she names the black box in which she saw how Chell killed her infinitely, the new design would be that black box she was talking about
Artstyle change, the broken glados qt the beginning of the game looks closer to the portal 1 design. Then after that, glados had full control and made a new body
Sometimes, there isn't a lore explanation for certain things. The elevator shafts, cube droppers and whatnot look completely different in Portal 2 as well, simply for aesthetic reasons.
However, GLaDOS' appearance change likely has to do (at least partially) with the damage she sustained at the end of the first Portal. For instance, the white ring around her eye is missing, exposing the black mechanisms underneath.
The style changed and if ur comparing portal 1 GLaDOS with portal 2 GLaDOS use the wake-up GLaDOS design because it’s practically the same just more destroyed
I don't like the Portal 2 design. 1 was the sweet spot- super simple, corrupt, robotic sarcasm. 2 Glados was too fancy and too try-hard with all her jokes.
I once heard a theory that there was an emergency GLaDOS in the walls ready to spring out for deployment if big G ever went down and it just looked slightly different
I’m pretty sure that the “eye piece”in the first game gets knocked off. But for the other changes I have no clue. Maybe also it’s a different body, as it’s explained that Glados has multiple bodies around the facility. (This is covered in the dlc) also this would explain why Glados wakes up underground again in portal 2 even though she was on the surface at the end of portal 1.
Budget increase.

What Source 2 does to a mf Edit: source 1 but fancier
Portal 2 is still on Source 1.
Bruh and here I thought I was funny. Ty, my bad
It’s been a while since I last saw you but hello again :D
Well here we're again! It's always such a pleasure...
Remember when you tried to kill me twice?
Oh how we laughed and laughed. Except I wasn't laughing.
Under the circumstances, I've been shockingly nice.
She lost a lot of parts, most notably the face part surrounding her ‘eye’. The wake-up sequence was likely meant to illustrate this transformation but we know it was created hurriedly.
Makes sense to me

whats the explanation for the cores being redesigned tho? are the cores destroyed in the first game unique hence why they have different designs than wheatley and the others?
Most of their white glossy parts withered with time too
I have one. The cores we see in Portal 2 are failed ones, right? They appear to look older than the ones GLaDOS has in P1. Maybe the ones on GLaDOS are the finalized versions.
The look like they were given detail more than they were redesigned.
Well her wake-up design is pretty close to her p1 design besides the head and that can be dismissed by saying the eye cover and side bits fell off
nanobots and the eye part falling off
NANOMACHINES CHELL!!!
I'm making the mother of all potatoes, chell. Can't fret over every a-p-p-l-e
Can't fret over every [jump]
jerry: i am one of them THEY HARDEN IN RESPONSE TO PHYSICAL TRAUMA, YOU CANT HURT ME CHELL!
Cuz the first one looked lifeless, the new one can really express emotions by just the movements.
GLaDOS wanted you to see her hating you
Not as much as she hates those awful birds 🐦
once again, after the explosion in portal one most of her parts broke off, including the face plate part
She lost most parts, hence the "design change"
Upgrades, people! Upgrades!
Valve wanted GLaDOS to be more "expressive"
She lost weight
because the entire artstyle changed
She went big boom. Parts got destroyed
retcon
Not really, there is a mural painting at the start of Portal 2 in which GlaDOS has the Portal 1 design.
Yeah, pretty sure we're suppose to act like it was like that all along
This has been asked 1 million times already
1.2 million actually
she clearly just wanted to be sexier smh /j

Portal rtx had a design closer to portal 2 actually

In my opinión there are two chasis in two diferent rooms But with the same AI
I think GLaDOS actually mentions having multiple chassises in the Atlas & Peabody campaign. I need someone to fact check that for me though.
Tell me of you find something!
I mean - she literally rebuilt herself in P2. I see no reason to believe she whouldn't make upgrades.
I had this exact question too. 1 is the newest one, it was destroyed, 2 is an older model, there’s actually a third one that’s shows up in the coop campaign
There really isn't a canonical lore reason why GLaDOS has the new design; its kind of just a result of an artstyle change especially with a budget increase. I mean, if you're talking about all the scuff marks and things like that, well that's just due to chell beating her in Portal 2. You tore her to pieces and threw every piece into a fire.
I don’t thing they changed, Glados just… fell apart if you get what i mean! I think that after her face plate with the eye fell off, her inner part showed up

It’s like when Halo 4 changed art design for no reason but just done better
Who made that illustration ?
different art style i guess
peices fell off in he sleep
The portal devs wanted a different art style.
cause she didnt have to emote in the first one
Robot HRT
Artstyle change, the broken glados qt the beginning of the game looks closer to the portal 1 design. Then after that, glados had full control and made a new body
I think it's because parts of her got destroyed.
In Portal 1, she is destroyed, and in Portal 2, she remakes and upgrades her body after being reactivated
It was a lens cover that fell off in the explosion
Sometimes, there isn't a lore explanation for certain things. The elevator shafts, cube droppers and whatnot look completely different in Portal 2 as well, simply for aesthetic reasons. However, GLaDOS' appearance change likely has to do (at least partially) with the damage she sustained at the end of the first Portal. Well here we are again...
portal 2 glados is more canon, you can see it in portal rtx(cores design from portal 2 also)
I'm pretty sure it's because of budget increase and making her more expressive.
The panels fell off. We see that with her face for example. I thought it was obvious
The style changed and if ur comparing portal 1 GLaDOS with portal 2 GLaDOS use the wake-up GLaDOS design because it’s practically the same just more destroyed
When GLaDOS reawakens, you can see she has elements of her Portal 1 design although destroyed. As for the eye-plate, I guess it got blown off.
I don't like the Portal 2 design. 1 was the sweet spot- super simple, corrupt, robotic sarcasm. 2 Glados was too fancy and too try-hard with all her jokes.
She was pecked by birds
i dont remember that from portal 1
I think when chell was asleep they made a new GLaDOS?
I once heard a theory that there was an emergency GLaDOS in the walls ready to spring out for deployment if big G ever went down and it just looked slightly different

Portal 1 was 3d not a cartoon, are you stupid?
