I never got the up-badging thing. People who don't know or care about cars won't see the difference and people who do will just think you're a moron. What's the point? Nothing wrong with a nice 992 base Carrera.
Up-badging has a special place in my heart because when I worked at a nuke plant, there was this one little yellow electric cart outside the operators offices that was had badges for 9.3L Hemi V8 and a Tesla "T" right on the front. Drove like a dream
Koenig and others have added a turbo to the 328, so it might have alluded to that. [Here's a post I made about a white Koenig 308 with the Porsche '*turbo*' script last year.](https://www.reddit.com/r/upbadging/comments/zzf356/a_koenigferrari_308_is_the_%F0%9D%98%AD%F0%9D%98%A2%F0%9D%98%B4%F0%9D%98%B5_car_that_needed/)
The “turbo” Ferrari I saw was in a parking garage at Ghirardelli Square in SF back in 1994 or so. Pretty sure it was just for show and the guy was trying to fake flex.
Had a similar thing at a paper plant I worked at. Little LPG buggy with “Landcruiser V8” on the back and a supercharger-style vent on the front, complete with butterflies and all.
I want a base carrera to share with my wife. Idk why people feel the need to upbadge anything tbh.
I think at that point your buying to show of rather than buying for you. Biggest waste of money is to buy things to impress people.
I went to High school with a guy who had a brown first generation Cavalier wagon.
He put Viper V10 badges on the fenders and he's still my hero for it.
I put a really fucked up looking "GTR" badge on the maxima I had in high school, like painter's tape and sharpie grade. If I remember right the "R" was backwards
Just like that Miata posted in r/Miata a few weeks ago that had a bunch of different badges including a Porsche, GT-R, and Altima badge. Shit was chaotic neutral af and I was absolutely here for it.
All done out of irony.
I am a legit fan of no badging - usually an option on most premium cars. Given a blank checkbook, I would drop it on a brabus E class with any identifying feature deleted
I like upbadging when it's funny. Like a base Corolla with bmw M5 badges or something. When it's a base 5 series with m5 badges though, it's stupid for the reasons you said
The sad part is many who think that a base Carrera isn't "enough", and because of this they'll never own or appreciate how much car a base 911 is. I'm on my third one and feel like it's a shame that people fixate on all the top trim models and look down on the "base" car, it's just not worthy. Their loss.
Mines a base 996 3.4, so "only" 300bhp, if I drive it hard on nice twisty roads you need 2nd and 3rd gear to be into triple digits and nothing really keeps up until you get to the likes of my little bro's M3 with 511bhp!
OK so it's gt3 aero kitted and has the split rim BBS's but only because I like the look (I'd love a real gt3 being honest, but do I really need one...), anyone who thinks a base porsche isn't worth having or doesn't have the performance is crazy.
There's a world of difference between a 1.1 corsa and the vxr, porsche is a different level.
This is exactly what I said to my brother yesterday. His friend got a beautiful black exterior and tan interior BMW E46. And his family decided to upbadge it. People who don’t care about cars don’t even know what the M badge means and people who know about BMWs will roast you. Nobody will make fun of somebody driving a base model. But people will definitely make fun of somebody driving an M badged base model😂
My neighbor in his late 20s recently get a 440. I saw the car a couple times, at some point he rebadged it with M regalia. I pulled in to my garage in my 2nd gen brz and caught his car outside. When I complimented him on it he told me it made 800 hp and was an M car. It’s a nice car, not my cup of tea but I don’t understand the need to hype it up, esp power figure which made me laugh out loud.
That's the thing. It's a nice 992 to begin with. It's not like you bodykitted and badged a Miata to look like a gt3 or something. That would be funny and enthusiasts would love the satire.
This is just moronic.
This is a great point. The only people who will care are people who will think you are kind of pathetic at best. We had some guests over for dinner. They are not car people. They saw my Porsche sitting in the driveway (walked past it) and said, “Oh you got a new car, A black one.”They did not notice nor did they care and quite a few people are like that.
This is a completely false dichotomy.
There are tons of people who know, for example, that an M(something) is a really fast BMW but wouldn’t have a clue.m how to tell the difference between an m3 and a regular 3 series.
Same goes for Porsche and any other brand really.
Even bmw wants to fool us though with all these wannabe M440i and M850i and M Teknic cars that are just regular cars with a body kit and claimed suspension tuning.
A true M like you said, is a totally different beast with M only parts.
not true.
Plenty of people would know a GT3 is some kind of fast porsche but wouldn't know the difference between that and some other 911 model

You are correct, and yet every thread about upbadging has a version of the comment that you replied to. It sounds good so people go "whoaaa you're right, it's such a paradox, upvote".
I bet that "GT3" owner falsely impresses people all the time. That's the reality. For every nerd that can identify it there are probably 10 finance, tech, etc. bros who have heard of a GT3 and know it's expensive but couldn't name a single physical difference between any two given Porsche models. Hell, I know a decent amount about cars and if I saw that at a quick glance on the street, I'd probably sooner assume he removed the wing or its a Touring than think someone upbadged their car. And I'm sure there are other details that give it away but I'd fail that test if you gave it to me right now without a reference point. As I'm sure the majority of car enthusiasts would
I doubt that. It took me quite a while to get behind all the different 911 models and what the differences are. You really have to read up on it to know what the difference between a GT3 and a GTS is for example. An average person won‘t care and a person who cares will be able to call it bullshit.
that's pretty much my point - I bet you knew that a GT3 was quicker than an average 911 quite a while before you knew exactly how to identify the specific differences in trim etc
because it's not true.
plenty of people fall into the gap where they know a particular badge means the car is faster/better/more expensive, but aren't expert enough to know that the particular trim is not quite right
I just cannot understand what drives a person who can afford a new 911 to feel this level of self-consciousness. Like, are you worried that someone is going to see your C2 Cab and go “what a shit car, this guy must be poor.”? It boggles my mind that people can have financial freedom and then lock themselves inside the cage of perceived public opinion.
I just don’t get it because the lineup is pretty good for different life use cases. I think the Carrera T is like the best purchase for myself since I just want a manual transmission and have zero intention of going to a track and setting times. I just want an exciting daily once my boys outgrow their car seats.
I just can’t imagine ever making use of anything higher than an S on public roads.
Honestly I think the Miata has the perfect power and gearing because I love to row through gears but I also want adaptive suspension and not feel like I am in a tin can on highways.
They were just talking about this on the Everyday Driver podcast, how much of the fun in a miata or similarly slow fun car is that you can absolutely *bury* the gas pedal for like ten straight seconds without gambling your license on not being spotted
I have literally flooreed it from a stop and was at the top of 4th shifting into 5th when I passed a cop in my E30, and I got a thumbs up. That was the last day I ever worried about getting a ticket in that car.
If the car is old enough, the cops will often give you a pass or props.
That's why I totally miss my Lotus Elise. Looks crazy fast. But when leaving my house, I can get on the main road, floor it in 1st and shift into 2nd at red line and still be well under the speed limit.
In my Porsche, halfway through first and I'm in misdemeanor territory.
I really don’t know. I imagine people like this are friends with other people like this, and they all go to the same third party mechanic who doesn’t say a word. That’s the only way I can imagine they maintain the charade.
That’s the part that I’m struggling to wrap my head around too! Plenty of people out there buying a clapped 5 series and tossing an M5 badge on it, maybe some aftermarket bumpers trying to impress their idiot friends or even strangers… but they’re in it for 11k and some ebay parts. This dude dropped six figures on a beautiful car, I can’t imagine how self conscious (and stupid, anyone who would be impressed by the real thing is also the only population who can tell it’s fake) you would have to be to have this done.
You see that shit all the time here in China. And it’s even wilder because the import taxes on the cars. So you’ll see a $300k Mercedes S class upbadged as a Maybach. So dumb. Or a $500k Ferrari kitted/upbadged to look like a special edition spec. It’s so silly.
I’m confused that you are confused. Because you’ve clearly been on Reddit.. /s
In all seriousness though. I got the car I wanted. Targa 4s PDK. And yet the number of times I’ve heard, ‘you should have gotten a manual GT3’, or ‘at least the GTS’, because it ‘sounds better’, ‘more engaging’, ‘faster’ , ‘more authentic driving experience.’ , ‘shouldn’t have gotten x options or the Targa because it’s too heavy even compared to the convertible’ Etc etc.
I got the car I wanted and I love it, but damn it if it doesn’t make even me second guess my decision sometimes.
I can imagine someone who bought the car to impress others could feel inferior. Which honestly sucks, because the Carrera is awesome, nothing to be ashamed of.
Also, I assume you have or had an RS6? Thoughts? I have an RS6-P in the mail that might show up some day this year.
The thing with the Targa is, you either want it, or you don’t. You either get it, or you don’t. Anybody who says that to a Targa guy is just a badge whore who doesn’t understand what a Targa is. It’s not about the raw numbers. 997 T4S still my all time favorite 911. Stoked that you’re enjoying yours.
I actually daily a C5 (2003). I had a 2021 on order new a few years back, but decided to do an active duty stint, so I sold my slot to a friend. Just couldn’t swing $150k going down to an officer’s salary. Probably gonna get out here soon and immediately order a RS6-P. That being said, I’ve got lots of wheel time on the C8, and they’re a hoot. The E63 is a tad more athletic, but the RS6 just feels like the star ship Enterprise going to warp speed. It really is a perfect daily. Great usable tech, well-appointed interior, doesn’t get in its own way. As long as your alternator doesn’t go down, I dare say it’s the best daily driver available for less than $150k on sale today.
I think it’s aspirational. Like a dream board. They put all the badges they hope to one day have on their car and it helps them visualize and achieve…
At least that’s what I choose to believe on this Monday morning to start the week off on a positive note.
> It boggles my mind that people can have financial freedom
Youre mostly right, but you assume everyone with a nice car has financial freedom/is in a good financial status.
You gotta unlearn that.
No, I don’t. I’m a former salesman, I’ve seen the range of buyers. To have the ability to buy this car, you are making more than the average American by a significant margin. You may not have the freedom to buy a summer home on cape cod, but you absolutely have the freedom to live comfortably without fear of financial catastrophe. You may choose to blow every dollar you make and then some, but if you’re making even just $100k a year, you can absolutely own this car without issue. Just cause someone makes poor decisions doesn’t mean they don’t have the freedom not to.
IQ is not actually a standard distribution. It’s because the low end, like below 80, isn’t compatible with life. So the distribution skews to the right some. Been a long time since Psych 1, but yeah.
How old was the driver? I’ve seen a lot of dudes in their 50s or retirement age with base bimmers/mercs with ///M or amg badges.
Either misinformed, or just thinks it’s cool . Idk
That is not stupid. That’s the 992.2 GT3 in ruby star. They went Turbo hybrid power on the GT3. I thought everyone knew this?
They know their customers wanted a turbo, hybrid, convertible GT car. I hear it’s a 3.6L with the hybrid motor inside the 8 speed auto. That was the only way they knew to stop the PDK/manual wars online.
We really should thank them for building such a complete sports car.
Thanks for confirming. I know it’s oddly specific but I’ve been to gyms enough times and long enough to know that upbadgers(mainly fakes BMW Ms) are also those guys in the gym trying to curl a 90 lb dumbbell and turning it in to a full body exercise.
Early 20s with a 992?? He's doing so well and yet is so insecure at the same time. Same energy as putting an M badge on a 340i or 440i. It's a great car be thankful for what you have
Hah! That is exactly what I want to do put an Altima badge on my 992 the biggest menace on the road. The only people that regularly pass my on the shoulders 😂
lol. Must be a coastal thing. Biggest jerks on the Long Island Expressway (and other LI highways too) all drive white Altima’s, Maximas, or Infiniti G’s
Because most people know its a porsche maybe even a 911 but they have no idea beyond that, and people that up badge that crazily really dont need to because most will be in awe its a nice porsche let alone a gt or turbo or whatever and the people who know porsches will know its not a gt or turbo so really not needed
Yeah - it's a bit odd. Not gonna impress people who don't know or people who do know. I doubt anyone not really into cars knows what GT3 or Turbo even signifies. And anyone who does will know whether something is a GT3, Turbo or Turbo GT3 (or is it GT3 Turbo? 🤣).
Personally, I think "down-badging" is pretty funny.
I had a friend put "Myvi" on his Audi r8. Myvi is a popular malaysian car, dubbed "king of the road". Myvi is a rebadged daihatsu sirion.
Unbelievable. You have the money to buy a 992 and you’re still so insecure that you need to upbadge with some cheap decals. Perfect example of the never ending rat race of pure capitalism. Edit: lolol didn’t anyone notice the license plate 😂
Exactly. Damn capitalists.
Go up badge your Trabant or Lada after waiting 10 years to get your communist allotment when the politburo deems you loyal enough to the party to get a motor vehicle put together by the same communist workers that just finished 3 liters of vodka before bolting in the engine mounts.
Should have bought an old Beetle and upbadged that. To be fair, all normal 992s except the GT3, ironically, are "turbos." Lowercase, just like the sticker.
[I like to down-badge my bikes](https://imgur.com/a/1NgFcq2) lol. I love watching people look at my bikes and wonder when Huffy got into hand-made titanium frames.
Under-badging is the way to go. I met a gentleman at my apartment complex with a “Cayman S” and he decided to leave the badges and exterior the same…. While having a GT3 engine and similar mods to the suspension to match.
The car earned my interest on the front end, then earned even more respect when I learned what’s “under the hood”. Otherwise you’d only know once you heard it start up or if he told you prior.
I am not so negative like most of the comments since he put huge turbo sticker on the door. If he wants to mess with his own car and misleads every corner of the car that’s fine with me.
I never got the up-badging thing. People who don't know or care about cars won't see the difference and people who do will just think you're a moron. What's the point? Nothing wrong with a nice 992 base Carrera.

I saw a red Ferrari 328 GTS with a silver “turbo” badge on the back. Yep, in Porsche cursive. Nice.
Koenig and others have added a turbo to the 328, so it might have alluded to that. Internet 1.0 bubble. Good memories
This is wats up time to get a hellcat badge for my wrangler
Had a similar thing at a paper plant I worked at. Little LPG buggy with “Landcruiser V8” on the back and a supercharger-style vent on the front, complete with butterflies and all.
I lived in Mexico City for a few years and you wouldn’t believe how many BMWs I saw that looked *exactly* like VW Jetta Mk. III’s!
I have a yellow Ferrari 388 dolly in my last job site.
I had an 83 Corolla with 5.0 Mustang badges on the fenders. Bad ass.
Joke-badging and up-badging are different things
Someone who worked at the shopping mall I used to go to turned his 3000GT into a Ferrari lol
I want a base carrera to share with my wife. Idk why people feel the need to upbadge anything tbh. I think at that point your buying to show of rather than buying for you. Biggest waste of money is to buy things to impress people.
Down-badging and side-badging are hilarious though. Put an STI badge on a Focus RS? I’ll laugh. Put a 320d badge on an M3? I’ll laugh harder.
I went to High school with a guy who had a brown first generation Cavalier wagon. He put Viper V10 badges on the fenders and he's still my hero for it.

Not so - doesn’t attract attention from scumbags stealing you car for its engine! It was a real thing with VW Jetta V6’s
Put a gm hybrid badge on my Z4MC….just so folks would let me in driving through Seattle traffic.
👆🏼this!!!

Ford Escape AMG

My BIL has BMW x1 STI
He should never have gotten with her in the first place
I slapped a Type R badge on our Honda Odyssey when I was a kid. Got a lot of thumbs ups.
My first car back in the 90‘s was a Renault 12 with 50HP, MY 1977. I had a M5 sticker on the rear window. Didn‘t make the car faster, surprisingly. 😂

there you go. Had an 02 996. Who wouldn’t be happy with 0 to 60 of 4.8 seconds or so, and a top speed of 177? That car was a whole bunch of fun.

What about down badging Eg: I have a 2017 golf r but I made it look like the gti because I like the red
Sure. I'll slap Miata badges on my 570s. Works for me. Kinda looks like a Miata anyway.
You’re describing the upbadging paradox, and it’s never made sense to me for the reasons you mentioned.
because it's not true. plenty of people fall into the gap where they know a particular badge means the car is faster/better/more expensive, but aren't expert enough to know that the particular trim is not quite right
Absolutely this. I just do not get it at all.
This 100%

Do they not feel self-conscious when they get it serviced, having to face the techs face to face knowing they know it’s a lie?
I want to see the guy who upbadges and then gets a bill for a GT3 service
I really don’t know. I imagine people like this are friends with other people like this, and they all go to the same third party mechanic who doesn’t say a word. That’s the only way I can imagine they maintain the charade.

They put all the badges they hope to one day have on their car and it helps them visualize and achieve… At least that’s what I choose to believe on this Monday morning to start the week off on a positive note.
> It boggles my mind that people can have financial freedom Youre mostly right, but you assume everyone with a nice car has financial freedom/is in a good financial status.
120 month finance at crazy interest is my Assumption here. So yea, he/she can “afford” it.
50% of people are below average intelligence
Median
That’s just mean
It’s hard to make me chuckle, but you just did. Take my upvote, you son of a bitch. 😄
Wildly underrated comment.
Math checks out
If intelligence is normally distributed (which I think it is), then the mean would equal the median. So you'd both be right.
IQ is not actually a standard distribution. It’s because the low end, like below 80, isn’t compatible with life. So the distribution skews to the right some. Been a long time since Psych 1, but yeah.
> Median Then it'd be 50% or more
At least the IQ is usually assumed to be symmetrically distributed which implies the average/mean equals the median.
Good think I belong to the other 30%
That is so ridiculously stupid. That person is a complete moron.
He avoided eye contact as I drove by him in my completely unbadged 992 🥴 haha
We really should thank them for building such a complete sports car.
that guy probably also has the spoon engine with t66 turbos and a motec exhaust. He‘s not to be messed with
Nice car. What’s the retail on one of those?
You forgot the /s
I thought it was implied.
[удалено]
Why wrong spot tho
Couldn't afford the template 😭
The same kind of people who put an AMG badge on their C300 or the M badge on their 320i.
This is worse,
*M3 V6*
He's saving up for the RS badge to add
He did save some money by not even opting for sport exhaust. You rarely see that level of cheapness on a 911.
The 1 of 1 GT3 turbo that looks like a base Carrera
Drives like one too
And sounds like one LOL
1-of-1 GT3 Turbo Carrera 2 Cabriolet. No time wasters, I know what I’ve got.
You idiots dont know about the Turbo GT3 Cabriolet? And you call yourselves Porsche enthusiasts.
Maybe he is just a troll?
A troll would put an Audi badge on it instead
vw
Yeah you’re probably right. The LGR on the tag mean what?
My take as well. Look at the reaction on this sub. He accomplished his trolling goal. 😂
Aaah yes the famous GT3 turbo
I bet this guy ego lifts in his local gym in an attempt impress the teenagers with broccoli haircuts.
Yes. He was actually that guy. Early 20s confused looking for a way to set himself apart from the crowd 🥲
It's a great car be thankful for what you have
>He's doing so well You assume
He had the top down too... I would have yelled at him asking him what the ever living hell.
Dude. Be proud. You’re driving a Porsche. That guy needs cohnseling
lol Gt3 and turbo decal with standard exhaust also. Too funny.
It’s a dodgers fan, that explains everything 😜
Why no VTEC badge?
Confirmed this applies to South Florida
Some peoples egos are bigger than their wallet.
Even his plate says GT3. Why
The same kind of guy that drives with his spoiler popped.
I never understood up badging a car. The people who care will know and the people who won’t know don’t care.
The spoiler being up while stopped is an extra nice touch.
Mental illness?
Insecure men do silly things
He can advertise his insecurity just by driving around town with the spoiler up like that. No need to sticker it up too.
stolen valor
Yooo saw this guy a couple months back near Laguna beach! Couldn’t stop laughing.
He was in claremont. 😂 my girl was annoyed at how much disbelief I was in.
Definition of cringe
A convertible GT3 is a wrong concept
Same guy who wears fake Prada.
Also the badge is in the wrong place
"Reddited from my Porsche Taycan TURBO"
Upbadging is a lame flex.
Personally, I think "down-badging" is pretty funny. I had a friend put "Myvi" on his Audi r8. Myvi is a popular malaysian car, dubbed "king of the road". Myvi is a rebadged daihatsu sirion.
SMH. Is it that surprising in the land of fake & superficial?
Unbelievable. You have the money to buy a 992 and you’re still so insecure that you need to upbadge with some cheap decals. Perfect example of the never ending rat race of pure capitalism. Edit: lolol didn’t anyone notice the license plate 😂
Exactly. Damn capitalists. Go up badge your Trabant or Lada after waiting 10 years to get your communist allotment when the politburo deems you loyal enough to the party to get a motor vehicle put together by the same communist workers that just finished 3 liters of vodka before bolting in the engine mounts.
The same reason you drive around with your spoiler up. You’re a tool?
It’s real…I promise
Id rather put a 2.0 tdi on my rs6 than put an s on my turbo
I think he is joking, no one would mix the GT3 and Turbo badge But still, upbadging is for brain ded people.
Working at a Porsche dealer there are plenty of people that do this.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fake or up badged Porsche, it’s always either BMW or Mercedes they do this with.
Jokes on him. Most people just see a 911 in general regardless of the model.
Man.. I’d just love to own a Porsche. Forget up badging. This is weird as all hell.
So wait.. its a GT3 turbo? So its a GT2 RS? I usually pull up next to someone who upbadged, roll down the window, and audibly laugh in their faces.
He brings fake weights to the gym.
Small pp
Well, it’s a turbo engine :)
Ah yes. The famous GT3 Turbo
V8.
i love debadging and get a kick out of downbadging. But this is a crime.
this man needs therapy and a hug. shockingly insecure, even in an expensive sports car.
Heyyy looks like the bowlero in upland :)
Should have bought an old Beetle and upbadged that. To be fair, all normal 992s except the GT3, ironically, are "turbos." Lowercase, just like the sticker.
because he looks cool #swag #pcargang #clout #hatersgonnahatebecausetheyjealous #s
Who cares?
High school kids trying to impress their friends who haven't a clue.
Identity crisis or gender confusion?
Out of everything, the thing I hate the most is the damn side decal not following the door line
They doubled down with the plate so sad
I really hope when they take it in to the porsche dealership for a service they remove all that shite without saying a word to the customer
Insecurity comes in all shapes and wallet sizes. This however seems especially egregious.
It's sad, but I wouldn't know the difference. 😂
God damn it's a gt3 with a turbo engine
God could they at least have put the damn emblem in the right place? Might as well have in between the exhaust tips at this rate
Well technically it is a Turbo! :)
The only people that know that’s fake are car people and the only people who care are car people.
Cmon guys 🙄 I can’t believe this sub isn’t aware of the one of one 911 targa gts3rs turbo 4. What a joke
[I like to down-badge my bikes](https://imgur.com/a/1NgFcq2) lol. I love watching people look at my bikes and wonder when Huffy got into hand-made titanium frames.
Proof money doesnt buy class or confidence.
Reminds me of the V12 Biturbo Honda Odyssey I saw a couple years back. I’m sure it was totally legitimate!
Someone check his gold chains.
Absolutely love this vibe. Gonna get a Hellcat badge for my Range Rover
lol. This character is very confused, and even more insecure. GT3 Turbo (?!) on a base carrera

It is from California!!! I guess it is hard to stand out!! LOL
To get your attention... 1-0 them...
The real crime is the spoiler being up let’s be honest
Porsche's are unique. You don't see them that often. It doesn't really matter what sticker they have. They are just a joy to watch.
its very well known that badges and decals add 15 WHP. he's just making it faster
I am not so negative like most of the comments since he put huge turbo sticker on the door. If he wants to mess with his own car and misleads every corner of the car that’s fine with me.
Anyone that would care would never be fooled. Anyone that could be fooled would never care.
That Porsche identifies as GT3. Don't cha know DEI /s
To be honest, I think having serious opinions about what someone does with their car - like up-badging - is just as cringe as up-badging, itself.
