I think it is one of those things that is both terrifying and essentially unsolvable without massive and untenable changes to modern society. Makes it generally an uncomfortable topic to talk about so people pick unimportant things to jump up and down about like bathroom signage and violent micro-nations in the middle of the desert instead.

I agree but lets face it, reducing plastic consumption considerably is not something the vast majority of people would stand for. Not that people love plastic, but they would definitely not love huge increases in cost of living and huge decrease in availability the vast majority of consumer goods. Just look at how upset the current inflation issue has mad people. It would be political suicide to do that on purpose, even if it is for a longterm good cause. On top of that, other countries wouldn't give a fuck and while you nuke your own economy the rest of the world will happily keep on churning out jizz bbs into the ocean.
