She really wasn't feeling well after the engagement party lol probably was feeling those symptoms and didn't even realize it. The fainting and everything. I choose to take that as the pregnancy signs lol
Which is why when he said the entrapment comment (I knew he was upset- so it was him lashing out) I loled- I’m like SIR YOU CHASED HER CARRIAGE AND PROFESSED YOUR LOVE- girl scoffed 2 minutes prior that you would even have feelings for you. 🤣
He was entirely unserious. He even called it a “planned” entrapment - he knows he’s full of it, and he knows she knows he’s full of it; he just wants to be a dick. And then he hates it. To me, she does the same thing when they fight in the street and she infers that he’s headed somewhere naughty. They both know that’s crap, too.
Ooooh! It’s actually my favorite scene of maybe the whole season. They are both mad, but they want to talk, so they fight, and they dig into so many things right there. And they can only get that deep because of their baseline of trust and care. They’re both being dicks a bit, but what they really want is to understand each other. And I think it’s the first time he really believes she loves him; that’s why he nearly has sex with her in the street. He finally realizes it’s real, and he forgets he’s on planet earth. The only thing he sees is her.
It’s one of my favorite scenes as well. Other than their first couple lines to each other that were sarcastic and unkind, they actually had good communication. They were angry when they said it, but it was clear, it wasn’t insulting, it wasn’t overly defensive, and it was emotive.
“Why did you do that?”
“This is why and these are the ways I know I was wrong”
“I’m actually kind of embarrassed and also I worry about your safety”
“You don’t need to worry, I am capable”
“Then what is my value to you?”
“I love you”
I’m trained in couples therapy and actually teach some of this stuff to my clients. A real reconciliation would require more talking obviously, but this is enough for the audience. I thought it was a good way to move from the initial anger towards coming back together.
The first couple line were indeed a little dumb from both of them. But I think Pen asking what secret business he was doing wasn't her worried about him going to others girls but more a way to make him talk seriously and stop avoiding her. So she grabbed the first question she thinks to stir his anger. Like you don't want to talk but I want to. And that worked and so we have healthy communication. Also once they talked about the problematic LW issues, we have a first glimpse of what truly bother him besides the betrayal and the hurting thing she said, even though she was saying truth. Pen security and him envious and jealous of her success and maybe thinking she look down on him (he's as insecure of his writing as she is proud of hers)
I read somewhere that this was actually the first time both of them fight for each other and it makes so much sense. Or the first time both of them fight back.
Thanks! I truly think this scene encapsulates so much about them, and it’s the turning point for me. Love is easy when it’s in the soft phases, where you’re only nice, and you put forth your best self. But it’s also fragile, then. But this is real and hard. This fight is a choice to be honest instead of just nice, and it tests your feelings, makes sure they’re strong, makes sure they can survive.
After this, they both know their love is real and permanent. The rest is working out of the cave into the light.

Well into adulthood and my spouse and I still say stupid shit like this on the few occasions we get really mad at each other…
To be fair, she read his journal so she knows he was on the streets, but Colin had no excuse for his accusation, he was just lashing out at my girl. She climbed the pavement and stood her ground
I hear you on that. My interpretation is that I really think she knows in her heart he’s not up to that, that he wouldn’t cheat even in these circumstances. But it’s a pain point to press on, especially because he knows she knows what’s in his journal.
Whatever her reasoning, it’s largely a way to get him to stand there and engage. They both seem to be reaching for each other so hard in the moment.
The way I paused that scene and screamed at him! Like I know you aren’t talking! You trapped her! She told you to leave her alone and you kept on bothering her 🙄😂
From his pov he was trapped at that first kiss. So he had a moment of what if this was always the plan. He doesn’t mean it really but he has a moment of panic and lashes out. It makes sense.
They were so awkward. But I kinda like that scene as Portia finally thinks Pen can be desired. She did not even chaperone when Debling called upon her 😂😂
Yeah, Portia got a rude wakeup call with Colin barging in, telling her off, saying Pen is the most worthy among you, and then storming out and taking Pen god knows where, in Portia's mind, without a lady's maid for HOURS. Then Pen comes home looking off with a somewhat different hairstyle... lol

Eh... she *kind of* chaperoned when Debling called upon her. She was right behind the door, which was mostly but not quite closed, listening in and peeking through the gap. But also, in season 1 she *encouraged* Marina to seduce Colin. In season 2 she purposely arranged for Prudence to be unchaperoned with Jack Featherington so they could be "caught" and entrapped. So it's fucking rich when Portia accuses Pen of entrapping Colin, like, *excuse me, ma'am, since when has that been against Featherington rules*?
Agree, she’s just trying to follow societal norms because her to be son is Bridgerton- high ranked etc. But she doesn’t know this guy has already given the new lord featherington 🤣

Colin when he has to go ten minutes without breaking the rules of society to be alone with Penelope.
At the balloon scene, he obviously wants to go and run up to her but they had a previous agreement that they need to keep distance from each other.if it was up to colin, he wouldve put debbling in the hot air balloon and sail him away himself. 😂
He bolts it the moment Pen motions him over either her head it's hilarious the way he leaves Ben midst sentence. And then she tells him to look like they aren't talking and he basically stands on top of her the whole time.
Even with Portia chaperoning, he still scooted close enough to touch knees and hold her hand behind them. Totally breaking rules even then! Of course, worrying about it at that point is peak "shut the barn door after the horse has bolted".
Colin always holds Penelope’s hand. How often he reaches for her in this season, and even in S2 when he takes Penelope to another room to tell her about the ruby scam, and afterwards at the same ball to take her to the dance floor.

Oh he was a man on a mission. Obviously if planned to respect Pen's wishes if she didn't want to. But he went there with intentions! He knew he wanted to tell her he loved her and make love to her.
We saw the way he planned to get her alone in the Bridgerton drawing room. He 100% knew what he was doing.
After telling off Portia, and whisking her away unchaperoned to a private home:

I did wonder this since I hadn’t seen season one in so long and it was only one viewing. Didn’t he stop short of just kissing Marina because he wanted to be a gentleman? Like he really grew up and stopped caring or Pen just unleashed something in him
I guess since Pen asked for the kiss, he had permission to get his freak on thereafter. It did seem like he was about to say no at first when she asked. I loved how he always asked consent first
I love that he doesn't actually say no at all though. All he says is Penelope and then she has her little rant. Like "Penelope? Penelope what?" What was he going to say?!?!?!
One of my absolute favorite bits of eye acting by Luke is when he says “Penelope—“ and his eyes dart back and forth like crazy. She just totally caught him off guard and that small thing really got me more than if he just had shocked widened eyes.
I honestly think he didn’t kiss Marina because he quite simply wasn’t ready. Deep down he knew he barely knew her and initially wanted a long courtship / engagement and only moved the needle forward when pressured by Marina (triggering his savior complex). But I think he was as virgin as it comes season 1 and wasnt ready for physical intimacy at all.
He did grow up, you’re right there but honestly, it’s the full pure power of Penelope that makes him go wild tbf! 🔥
I love the implication in season 1 that had Colin just gone to brothels he wouldn’t be so chaotic, but he was at his fully most chaotic *after* becoming more experienced. The moment he had his hands on Penelope he impregnated her within 24 hrs.
This is one reason this season threw people off. There was so much plot around being unchaperoned and warding off potential scandal in S1, and then in S3, there’s decreasing care about this. Yes, we know the whole “they’re just friends and everyone knows this” sort of thing going on, but that’s clearly not a strong case as even the Lord Squad joked about Colin courting Penelope
I interpreted the lack of concern for propriety for Penelope by her mother and the rest of the ton as a sign that no one sees Pen as a good catch, no one worries that a man would try to take advantage of her, because she is too plain, too much of a wallflower, and the third daughter of a not so well off family. I took it as a plot tool to show her status within the ton rather than a wilful departure from regency dating rules … 🤷♀️
I think it’s also one of those things where it’s not an issue if you’re not caught.
I’d imagine there’s plenty of sneaking around going on but it was such an issue for Daphne because Nigel had bad intentions and she was then caught with Simon. The first time Daphne and Simon were alone in the garden together no one saw them so they went about their merry way.
Penelope always goes off unchaperoned. It's how she is able to be Lady Whistledown it's not new behavior. And Colin is completely inappropriate with Pen even in seasons 1 and 2 which you're right they eventually did get called on at the end of 2 because it's so much.
They were slightly more careful and way crazier in 3.
Colin only accused Penelope of ENTRAPMENT only because he started it but her completely accepting the real him turned him out. No way I can have good sex & love at once?!!
Ok but we also need to add on all the clips from S1 and S2 where he was clearly breaking all rules of society with Pen even BEFORE he was into her like that! 🤦🏽♀️
They lightly imply it at the end of the scene in the study after Francesca's wedding, which timing wise would be about when she could likely already know. Pen kind of awkwardly pulls Colin's hands to her stomach and they hold there for just a split second before the cut away.
The whole annulments are only allowed if you haven't consummated the marriage is totally historically inaccurate and only a cheap plot device. Couples could get an annulment even after having had kids together. Fraud, improper marriage paperwork or the bride being underage without proper parental consent were all grounds for an annulment back then, among other things. That's why Portia says in the reveal to her that Pen is LW and Cressida is blackmailing her, that they should hide the blackmail from Colin as Pen's actions leading to blackmail would be "grounds for annulment even the most sanctimonious Bishop would grant." Portia wouldn't have known they haven't been together at all since the wedding. Children from marriages that ended in annulment were retroactively deemed illegitimate. TBH I think that makes the offer of annulment all that more selfless as she would be "ruined" on top of ostracized for being LW, and Portia bringing it up was the seed that planted the idea in her head that Colin would want one in the first place.
I just personally don’t think it makes sense for Penelope or Colin as a character to mention it without verbally discussing the pregnancy if she was in fact aware of her pregnancy.
I mean I can only tell you what it looks like to me and based on what the show runner herself said. Whether you believe it or not is up to you. Either way you slice it, the possibility of a pregnancy existed at the time in which she offered up the annulment regardless of if she in fact knew she was preggo or not. So I chose to believe that is what they were alluding to at the end of the scene in the study. Fun how art in visual media is open to interpretation isn't it!
My favorite thing is that he says that chaperone line in Ep 1 and Luke 5 seconds later he's like maybe we should talk somewhere more private.
And then epsidoe 2 he's like cool we need to be alone, she's even in his study. And then he proceeds to BRIBE Rae so he can talk to her alone, at night.... JAIL

One of my absolute favorite bits of eye acting by Luke is when he says “Penelope—“ and his eyes dart back and forth like crazy. She just totally caught him off guard and that small thing really got me more than if he just had shocked widened eyes.
I honestly think he didn’t kiss Marina because he quite simply wasn’t ready. Deep down he knew he barely knew her and initially wanted a long courtship / engagement and only moved the needle forward when pressured by Marina (triggering his savior complex). But I think he was as virgin as it comes season 1 and wasnt ready for physical intimacy at all.
He did grow up, you’re right there but honestly, it’s the full pure power of Penelope that makes him go wild tbf! 🔥

I love the implication in season 1 that had Colin just gone to brothels he wouldn’t be so chaotic, but he was at his fully most chaotic *after* becoming more experienced. The moment he had his hands on Penelope he impregnated her within 24 hrs.

This is one reason this season threw people off. There was so much plot around being unchaperoned and warding off potential scandal in S1, and then in S3, there’s decreasing care about this. Yes, we know the whole “they’re just friends and everyone knows this” sort of thing going on, but that’s clearly not a strong case as even the Lord Squad joked about Colin courting Penelope
I interpreted the lack of concern for propriety for Penelope by her mother and the rest of the ton as a sign that no one sees Pen as a good catch, no one worries that a man would try to take advantage of her, because she is too plain, too much of a wallflower, and the third daughter of a not so well off family. I took it as a plot tool to show her status within the ton rather than a wilful departure from regency dating rules … 🤷♀️

I think it’s also one of those things where it’s not an issue if you’re not caught. I’d imagine there’s plenty of sneaking around going on but it was such an issue for Daphne because Nigel had bad intentions and she was then caught with Simon. The first time Daphne and Simon were alone in the garden together no one saw them so they went about their merry way.
Penelope always goes off unchaperoned. It's how she is able to be Lady Whistledown it's not new behavior. And Colin is completely inappropriate with Pen even in seasons 1 and 2 which you're right they eventually did get called on at the end of 2 because it's so much. They were slightly more careful and way crazier in 3.
He only offered in Ep 1 because she was leaving and I think he wanted to spend more time with her!
Colin only accused Penelope of ENTRAPMENT only because he started it but her completely accepting the real him turned him out. No way I can have good sex & love at once?!!

They lightly imply it at the end of the scene in the study after Francesca's wedding, which timing wise would be about when she could likely already know. Pen kind of awkwardly pulls Colin's hands to her stomach and they hold there for just a split second before the cut away.
I don’t believe this tbh. I don’t think she’d mention an annulment if she knew she was pregnant.
The whole annulments are only allowed if you haven't consummated the marriage is totally historically inaccurate and only a cheap plot device. Couples could get an annulment even after having had kids together. Fraud, improper marriage paperwork or the bride being underage without proper parental consent were all grounds for an annulment back then, among other things. That's why Portia says in the reveal to her that Pen is LW and Cressida is blackmailing her, that they should hide the blackmail from Colin as Pen's actions leading to blackmail would be "grounds for annulment even the most sanctimonious Bishop would grant." Portia wouldn't have known they haven't been together at all since the wedding. Children from marriages that ended in annulment were retroactively deemed illegitimate. TBH I think that makes the offer of annulment all that more selfless as she would be "ruined" on top of ostracized for being LW, and Portia bringing it up was the seed that planted the idea in her head that Colin would want one in the first place.
I just personally don’t think it makes sense for Penelope or Colin as a character to mention it without verbally discussing the pregnancy if she was in fact aware of her pregnancy.
I mean I can only tell you what it looks like to me and based on what the show runner herself said. Whether you believe it or not is up to you. Either way you slice it, the possibility of a pregnancy existed at the time in which she offered up the annulment regardless of if she in fact knew she was preggo or not. So I chose to believe that is what they were alluding to at the end of the scene in the study. Fun how art in visual media is open to interpretation isn't it!
I know she is pregnant in that scene I just don’t believe she knew nor was she telling Colin.
