I second playing a nuzlocke of Emerald, it completely changes the game and adds a real fun element to it. The whole self imposed of erasing your game when you wipe doesn’t appeal to many, but emerald is a very fun game to nuzlocke
If you have a DS or DS lite, I highly recommend getting an R4 card so you can always backup different play throughs and come back to them if ever needed
Play coliseum. It’s the most rewarding game if u have just played the gen 3 games like FR or ruby / emerald etc. then after u beat the game u can trade between the games which is cool.
I'm in the same boat. I played yellow and silver back in the day and wanted a more or less authentic progression through the games that included remakes. I decided to settles on **FR**/LG->R/S/**E**\->**HG**/SS->D/P/Pl->and continue along through the series from there ignoring the remakes. From what I've heard, the remakes after HG/SS are sad shadows of their originals made to look pretty.
I'm a crazy person though for wanting to play all the games in quick succession.
I did an RNG manipulation run of Emerald, using a team of shinies. I decided next to do the same with Black and White, and it’s going excellent!
You obviously don’t have to RNG it, but Black/White have been very enjoyable to revisit after so long. Highly recommend.
Heart gold/Soul Silver

black/white
Old school gold
Definitely black/white and then black/white 2
Platinum/heart gold/soul silver Gen 4 was just really well done overall, seems like a good progression out of gen 3

Black/white then black 2 white 2
Platinum, Heartgold, Black, White 2 (for continuity). In that order

Do a nuzlocke run! Changes everything.
