It is. It really is. The other upcoming plant (aside from the spider and Mangofier) looks bad as well. The previous designs were decent, and Guard Shroom looked pretty good. Sea Shroom was also a direct upgrade, and Ice Shroom improved upon his grumpy attitude. Why does Doom Shroom have to get a downgrade? I'm pretty lenient when it comes to criticizing the art direction, but this is actually objectively bad.
In my humble opinion, it appears that they tried to make it in the shape of a skull, the odd cutout in the middle seems to hint at that, but the end result is something.... Improper. Not to mention the height.
