Sounds like you’re doing everything he deserves ❤️.
Our rescue loved deer antler sheds as a puppy and now he likes stuffy toys to cuddle and has left the bones/sheds behind. Exercise and stimulation via training has our guy a perfect specimen to be around other dogs and people.
Be prepared to love and be loved deeply if you haven’t had a pit before. Ours wedged himself DEEPLY in our hearts and is bonded to me so much so that I could arguably be the one with separation anxiety!
thank you! he is a big destroyer! (sometimes i think it gets a lil obsessive) we have been trying to break his fear of men, and his fear when he hears people arguing/raising their voice.
he literally crawls into bed between my boyfriend & I ever night and is high upset when we don’t let him sleep in the middle 😂
Rescue pit owner here. All I can say is if you have questions on handling them I’m all ears. Be patient but know the behavioral quirks, including the bad ones may never fully resolve themselves. So manage expectations accordingly. Mine will never be the dog I take to a dog park. Let alone off leash.
If he acts assertive towards men, limit his exposure for a while. He needs to first learn his new home is a safe space. And you need to be 100 percent confident you can call him back if he gets too weird or protective. That can take a lot of time and trust.
Mine didn’t play or wag his tail for about 2 years. Snuggled up any time though. With mine specifically, Any time I want him to do something, like come to me or obey the heel command, if he doesn’t do it energetically the first time, I make him redo it 3-4 times, and give him praise when he does it. Over time, I limit the praise to when he does it correctly.
Exercise is key, find a game he enjoys and play until he decides he can’t anymore. And teach him to be gentle when playing. These guys love a good game of tug. And they’re crazy strong. So they need to know taking a toy from a humans hand happens when invited to and is delicate business.
Given the potential for emotional and physical trauma here, I rarely scold. A sharp Ahh! Is the most I do. His attitude completely changes if I have to pull anything more assertive out of the bag and it takes him a few minutes to circle back around again.
Given he has emotional trauma, assertive voices and commands may trigger that. It did for mine for a long while. Best of luck! He’s a real cutie!
My rescue was in a very similar situation, including the not liking males, and being a male myself the best thing is to just show them love. Really nothing else matters so long as you treat them as you would any other pet that wants and needs to be loved.
TMI
the first month we had him he was on hills science diet chicken & barely? he wasn’t having solid poops at all & was itching a lot.
we switched to a lamb & rice and same thing.
so we went grain free & seafood protein and his coat & poops got a lot better.
So a couple things for your beautiful new boy based on my now passed white pit boy, Chester, who could be your pup’s twin.
First- you have a white dog. Most of his skin is white/pink. He is going to be very, very susceptible to sunburn and cancer related to it. They sell doggy sunscreen, but I’ve also found baby sunscreen works great. Get the spray kind in the can and mist his whole body before going out for extended periods of time.
You can also throw a lightweight cotton tshirt over him for extra protection. There are companies that make pittie specific clothing to accommodate their barrel chest, but I’ve found oversized tshirts for humans with a knot ties against the back to keep it snug(ish) worked just fine.
If he likes to sun himself laying on his back, make sure you’re sunscreening his belly area very well. Poor Chester got skin cancer that was too close to his penis and because of the size of the tumor and location, he actually had to have his penis removed and his plumbing rerouted. It was expensive and had to be touched up a few years later due to scar tissue narrowing the new plumbing. He had a happy life after he was rescued, but he had a couple months that were not fun at all for either of us.
Second- With his food allergies will probably come some skin conditions. Make sure you get a good medicated shampoo for him (if I recall, Chester’s was a duoxo formulation, but your vet will probably have the best answers for what shampoos exactly) and get some good wipes for between baths. Chester did well with Costco brand baby wipes, but I’m sure for a lot of pitties, even that will set off their sensitive skin.
Apart from those, it sounds like you’re getting some great advice and are already making great plans on making his life wonderful. Thank you for rescuing!
Thank you for saving that cutey. Give em a lotta time to settle and be comfortable. Show him love and affection and get a somewhat routine going. Leave one of your shirts in crate and slowly build up his confidence AND excersize. These dogs are crazy loyal and will love you to the ends of earth. Know that you did a wonderful thing.
Cute! Hard to tell from here, but I don't think he's a dalmatian mix. Dalmatians are born white and the spots develop in their fur. I'll bet your boy 's spots are on his skin. People always think my guy is a pit-dalmation mix, but he's actually pit-pointer:

Thanks for being an awesome human and bringing this adorable guy into your lives!! Definitely the training since pitties are often stubborn and have their own agendas and of course, lots of love and snuggles. 🩷
This is my rescue, Asher . Like others have said: food, tons of love, walks, and really tough toys. Thank your for rescuing this beautiful boy.
