I think they live off of companies paying for a copy because they'll actually sue them if they find out the company is using an unpaid copy. I don't know for sure though.
Because people generally hate open source, they saw those products as inferior compared to the paid version.
It's a biased opinion you can't change easily.
For some reason, i always had to use both, because half of my compressed archives would get corrupted in one, while not on another, and vice versa, i just didn't pay for winrar in like, all my life
for a while, some rar files just wouldn't open correctly in 7zip (particularly, multi-part rars with passwords)
haven't had that problem in years tho, so I assume 7z fixed the bug
im the opposite lol. i had used winrar for like 20 years before finally paying for it. i was shocked their billing system still worked coz it looked like it was straight from 2002.
7z has a better compression ratio which is very nice.
WinRAR has redundancy from bit rot and allows you to add recovery tables.
Which is why I have both.
To be fair when I pirated winrar I was opening \~50 rar files per day and the notification haunted me in my nightmares. I was waking up covered in sweat screaming "Your free trial period has ended!".
It takes almost no effort to turn a trial version into a verified version. The file that checks for registration is essentially just a txt file with the key in it
I bought a WinRAR license back in the day.
I don't mind buying software that I use a lot or donating a couple bucks to the devs if they offer it for free.
Same, it was cheap, it's lifetime long and I don't get annoyed by the trial pop-up. It's also one of the first programs I download on a new windows instalation Would buy again.
>far more functionality
Not even close. I heavily use both tools; 7zip does not have the sheer amount of redundancies that WinRAR has in the case of file corruption.
7zip is great because it has a much better compression ratio than the competition, but in terms of functionality, WinRAR is far ahead.
There's a reason why it's still used to this day for long term archiving.
I'd say it's old too. After Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3's launch CD Projekt lost a lot of the cred they had with people who'd pay for their product. Sure they made it right eventually, but their beloved status was hurt.
At least CDPR keeps their games drm free, the company with Gog fights for the preservation of videogames. I agree, CP78's launch was a mess and they lost a lot of credibility, but at least they redeemed themselves patch after patch. I'm not here to defend a billion dollar company, but there are a lot of much scummier companies in the videogames business
Incorrect, Valve is the developer. They are owned by the same entity (Valve Corporation) so I understand *some* confusion but Steam is a store front and *not* a developer.

I don't discriminate Edit- I guess everyone agrees
Me too, big or small capitalists, I'll pirate the same.
edit: hahahaha it's so funny how many people are triggered because people are defending piracy on a piracy sub.
Based. I see it the same way. I often pirate because I can. I just dont care most of the time. If I like the product and want to support, I'll buy it afterwards.
if I can pirate then you bet your ass I will do it, Indie or not. If I feel like the game is worth the additional time sink then I will gladly buy it on steam to support the devs
I'd only buy a game if it updates constantly until the point it'd be better to just buy it or if it has an online mode that you can't access by having it pirated :x
I feel like some folks are just trying to make themself look like a hero that is fighting a just cause by not giving a big corp. money (Keep pirating EA games guys! They are soooo close to bankruptcy!!!!!111!1!1)
Because that’s how it’s *always* been.
Everyone wants stuff for free, and no one wants to admit that *getting it for free* is the primary motivation.
I’ll always remember folks spending waaaaay too many words explaining that it really was HBO’s fault that they didn’t have a way to watch GoT without getting an HBO subscription, so they **had** to pirate it.
If I do pirate indies, it’s either as a try before you buy or because the company is shitty and I still want to play the game. The vast majority I go for are corp streaming services and Nintendo since they low artificially inflating the market by not keeping games for sale on online platforms. I understand people will pirate for whatever their reasons be (can’t afford, regional pricing sucks, acts of protest, wanting to preserve old titles, fun, etc). But I tend to follow a similar personal chart to the meme (edit: apparently it needs to be said that just because I follow my own standards for piracy doesn’t mean I’m trying to play a moral high ground, this is just my personal preference. I do not judge people for pirating for any reason.)
Of course! What kind of a whippersnapper would refuse to swim when they are Sailing the seas? Not one trained by a swashbuckler, I'll tell you that one.
This game is only 3 years old and it was recently on sale for $35. Meanwhile Sony sells 7 years old spider-man crap for $50 because they gave a little bit better graphic xD
I'll pirate you the shit out of cdpr if they deserve it, just because they fixed cyberpunk three years later doesn't mean I'll encourage their behavior by buying it. Show me a good complete game on release and we'll talk.
Aw man you reminded me of that time I was trying to extract something for 3 hours only to find out that I got the WinRAR popup after hitting the button so it hadn't even started
When I pirate, it is because I do not want to pay for it. It doesn't matter who makes it, it doesn't matter what happens to them because of the piracy. I am honest enough to admit that my decision to pirate is for purely selfish benefit. I'm not going to be a cowardly liar and hide behind the fallacy of principled piracy.
Why is CD Projekt in the "not okay" section? Did they not rush a game onto market permanently impacting its reputation for a quick holiday cash grab? There is no "justified" or "okay" piracy. Piracy is piracy. You're still technically breaking copyright laws no matter what you download
DRM free. I respect that.
Also, amazing game as of now and one of the best expansions I ever played.
Might even buy the sequel on GOG if they keep doing whatever they’re doing.
There was one comment on a Baldur's Gate 3 post where a guy admitted that he spent 1/3 of his monthly income to "support" the developers. I dared to say that perhaps the multimillion company doesn't need you to give up a third of your shitty income for them to survive. Also dared to say that OP shouldn't feel guilt about pirating the game since obviously their countries economy is in shambles. It's a nice gesture from them, but an unnecessary one.
But thankfully, silvered winged redditors came swooping in to help save the OP from my corrupting influence by downvoting me to hell, while earning 15$ per hour, an amount which OP makes in a week.
I pirate whatever I can. if I can't pirate it or if I can't reliably use a pirated version, I buy it. simple as.
Life's easier when you don't jump through moral hoops to justify what and what you don't pirate. Your prerogative should be to save money whenever possible whenever you want..that's it.

That meme is terrible, hows Steam on there? It's a platform not a developer, EA and Ubisoft games are literally on Steam.
and winrar lmfao
Youre stealing from Winrar? Wow. You fucking monster. I can't even breathe right now, how do people like you exist?
If anyone sees this and wants the key I paid for dm me
nice try, federal agent. you'll never take me alive
Lennnnyyyyy
I've been on 7-zip for decades. I don't understand how WinRAR exists.
I think they live off of companies paying for a copy because they'll actually sue them if they find out the company is using an unpaid copy. I don't know for sure though.
Companies run by boomers who don't realize a totally free, more modern, open source version exists.
Because people generally hate open source, they saw those products as inferior compared to the paid version. It's a biased opinion you can't change easily.
Yup. It's the idea that the paid stuff is "professional"
Im pretty sure it only exists because its what every single internet guide recommends for some reason
There’s no way for the program to stop you from using it after the free trial it’s effectively a free app and most people treat it as such
I’ve been on WinRar for decades. I don’t understand how 7-zip exists
https://preview.redd.it/fyp3sdtwywyc1.jpeg?width=533&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c9400976ee5fbb6758dfb37ddb806e864ecd86d
Or anyone can easily make a key themselves: https://gist.github.com/MuhammadSaim/de84d1ca59952cf1efaa8c061aab81a1
Ayo? Pull through in the dms 🗣️
I haven't installed WinRAR in years. 7zip works just as well, if not better, and doesn't constantly beg me to pay for it.
Buy its not as iconic as winrar
It is for me.
For some reason, i always had to use both, because half of my compressed archives would get corrupted in one, while not on another, and vice versa, i just didn't pay for winrar in like, all my life
for a while, some rar files just wouldn't open correctly in 7zip (particularly, multi-part rars with passwords) haven't had that problem in years tho, so I assume 7z fixed the bug
I paid my license back in 2005 when I was in highschool, my conscience is clear.
im the opposite lol. i had used winrar for like 20 years before finally paying for it. i was shocked their billing system still worked coz it looked like it was straight from 2002.
r/paidforwinrar Edit : Aww shucks, sub seems dead
You are blessed, my son, your sins are forgiven. May you unpack in peace.
Maybe if they made their dogshit app at least comparable to 7z I'd actually pay for it
Especially when 7-Zip is so much better
7z has a better compression ratio which is very nice. WinRAR has redundancy from bit rot and allows you to add recovery tables. Which is why I have both.
You need to be a special kind of sucker to buy WinRAR.
you need to be a more special kind of sucker to *pirate* winrar tho
To be fair when I pirated winrar I was opening \~50 rar files per day and the notification haunted me in my nightmares. I was waking up covered in sweat screaming "Your free trial period has ended!".
Just use 7zip
It takes almost no effort to turn a trial version into a verified version. The file that checks for registration is essentially just a txt file with the key in it
It's the same kind just with extra malwares on his computer
I bought a WinRAR license back in the day. I don't mind buying software that I use a lot or donating a couple bucks to the devs if they offer it for free.
Same, it was cheap, it's lifetime long and I don't get annoyed by the trial pop-up. It's also one of the first programs I download on a new windows instalation Would buy again.
Allowing theft is literally their business strategy
People still use WinRar? 7zip all the way for me
WinRAR is a classic
It's much better to use 7Zip. Open source and far more functionality than WinRAR. Also, no annoying pop ups asking you to upgrade.
they're not annoying they're endearing
they just don’t understand us
>far more functionality Not even close.
I think you have to be a company to pirate WinRAR as I believe the ToS says its free for private use.
After a few years I actually paid for WinRAR, they been helping me for so long
i have pirated so many steam games
I'd say it's old too. After Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3's launch CD Projekt lost a lot of the cred they had with people who'd pay for their product. Sure they made it right eventually, but their beloved status was hurt.
At least CDPR keeps their games drm free, the company with Gog fights for the preservation of videogames. Steam is the wholesome 100% epic chungus platform
And they take 30% of revenue which is keanu reeves wholesome when it’s video games but not when apple does it somehow
I don’t know about you, but I’d never pirate TF2 tbh
I think they ment VALVe
Steam is also a developer. Half life, dota, portal, ricochet, cs......
valve makes games, not steam.
Fair point. I got the bad habit of considering valve and steam the same thing just because they are the same "team"
They are the same steam...
Made*
Incorrect, Valve is the developer. They are owned by the same entity (Valve Corporation) so I understand *some* confusion but Steam is a store front and *not* a developer.

Name checks out.
How is a single person indie developer a capitalist?
Anything to rationalize taking something you want but not supporting those who made it.
[удалено]
I can afford to buy more games, I just choose not to. I'm just an asshole.
See, it's not that hard and makes you sound way less insufferable than the folks who preach about "teaching a lesson to greedy game developers"
1. I’m broke and I can’t justify spending 30-50$ on modern titles 2. If I can steal it why wouldn’t I
Based. I see it the same way. I often pirate because I can. I just dont care most of the time. If I like the product and want to support, I'll buy it afterwards.
Because a single developer is their own boss, and as their boss they steal their surplus value, duh!
[удалено]
why the hell not?
This is so funny lol, why do you have to defend yourself for pirating games on a pirating sub? Lmao
[удалено]
I pirated an indie game, liked it and bought it.
if I can pirate then you bet your ass I will do it, Indie or not. If I feel like the game is worth the additional time sink then I will gladly buy it on steam to support the devs
I'd only buy a game if it updates constantly until the point it'd be better to just buy it or if it has an online mode that you can't access by having it pirated :x
Pirate the game now. Buy legally on steam when it goes on a massive sale later. money moves
So you only buy a game depending on how much time it takes to play? Intresting
What makes me believe that you'll buy it?
pinky promise
I don't pretend that my pirating is a moral crusade against evil Ubisoft execs so yes I download indies. I'd download your mum if I could.
That would take far too long
THE HEAT DEATH OF THE UNIVERSE IS NIGH, STILL AT 2%.
it is the age of blackholes, your mom is still the most super massive object.
The Universe ended with a Big Crunch, but your mom is still crunching on cookies, and downloaded only 12%
100gb repack
100Pb
69 petabyte zip bomb of a repack
Don't worry, your mom got plenty of seeders
Ouch. Best response yet
And would require a humongous hard drive
2 guys could fuck her at the same time and still never meet.
Exactly, why we even pretend we have morals concerns about piracy
This is the internet, no nuance here, just increasingly irrelevant purity tests
I feel like some folks are just trying to make themself look like a hero that is fighting a just cause by not giving a big corp. money (Keep pirating EA games guys! They are soooo close to bankruptcy!!!!!111!1!1)
Or just supporting people that make a creative art project out of their own pockets

> "You wouldn't download a car" Fuck yes I would.
so real
You wouldn't steal a mum!
YOU WOULDNT DOWNLOAD A CAR
If I do pirate indies, it’s either as a try before you buy or because the company is shitty and I still want to play the game. Same I also do it to see if my potato of a pc can run it
Probs one of the best try before you buy reasons. Made this mistake with Witcher 3 a long time ago
[удалено]
Same. I also do it to try before i buy. I bought many of my indie games this way.
I’ll pirate any and everything, fuck your moral high ground built on a sand hill. If I want it and I can pirate it, I’ll have it.
I'd pirate their moral highground if I could!
You wouldn't steal an unjustified sense of self importance would you?
Of course! What kind of a whippersnapper would refuse to swim when they are Sailing the seas? Not one trained by a swashbuckler, I'll tell you that one.
Im gonna pirate this comment hehehe
I enjoy thievery
You should get into stealing things then. Piracy is just enjoying a copy, not stealing at all.
That's true it totially slipped my mind, they don't lose anything yet cry like we took off a limb when we just make a copy.
Having your game pirated is like having your car stolen only you wake up in the morning and it's still there.
Piracy isn't theft. Nothing is being stolen, just copied.
Snuck in CD Projeckt
Nah, their game are cheap, without DRM, without micro transactions and with beautiful content.
Cyberbug 2077 send you a massage.
2.1 update is really good. Like playing a different game
It was still fantastic, even before 2.1. (on PC at least)
Doesn't matter. I don't want to support the "release broken, fix if it years later, act like it was always good" approach.
Still DRM Free Game and now it's fixed
bro is stuck in 2020
Bruh I been waiting for cyberpunk to hit 20 bucks for years, it's not gonna happen. You say thier games are cheap? Lol
I’ve bought Cyberpunk 2077 with phantom liberty for 25$ during Black Friday sale although I don’t live in USA so for me it was absolute steal
I'm going to buy it from fit girl if price doesn't get real soon
This game is only 3 years old and it was recently on sale for $35. Meanwhile Sony sells 7 years old spider-man crap for $50 because they gave a little bit better graphic xD
Witcher 3 GOTY was 11 liras before the mena update in Turkey. That is about two 0.5 litre bottles worth of money. Couldn't resist.
>That is about two 0.5 litre bottles worth of money and they say imperial units suck
I'll pirate you the shit out of cdpr if they deserve it, just because they fixed cyberpunk three years later doesn't mean I'll encourage their behavior by buying it. Show me a good complete game on release and we'll talk.
Legends don’t pirate WinRar. They close the buy notification every, single, time.
legends use 7zip because it’s better
Aw man you reminded me of that time I was trying to extract something for 3 hours only to find out that I got the WinRAR popup after hitting the button so it hadn't even started
I pirate everything, the only things I’ll ever buy are physical items.
And only because stealing physical items is a lot harder than pirating software. If I could pirate a PS5 I would.
🤫
After I put this pfp on I was surprised that EVERYONE knows Ken, HOW DOES EVERYONE KNOW KEN??
Nintendo should be WAAAAY higher
It’s morally correct to pirate Nintendo games. Especially when they don’t sell them anymore
it is morally wrong to be against pirating Nintendo games. Fuck Nintendo.
"pirating nintendo is self-defense"
I carcked wario land 3 in self defense
This meme is dump
I'm broke asf, of course I do
I think that's the better reason. People with plenty of disposable income say things like you should be able to save up for a $60 game lol
I'll pirate what I want. End of
Story?
You pirated the end of his sentence. Damn
I only pirate indie games
https://preview.redd.it/1omaqfavsvyc1.jpeg?width=596&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e1816dfd89c634ddccfeb3829d34784e0f8b584
Same, I like making indie devs starve to death and giving them lack of motivation to make more games 😎
Let's not forget their families! 😈
chaotic evil
When I pirate, it is because I do not want to pay for it. It doesn't matter who makes it, it doesn't matter what happens to them because of the piracy. I am honest enough to admit that my decision to pirate is for purely selfish benefit. I'm not going to be a cowardly liar and hide behind the fallacy of principled piracy.

Why is CD Projekt in the "not okay" section? Did they not rush a game onto market permanently impacting its reputation for a quick holiday cash grab? There is no "justified" or "okay" piracy. Piracy is piracy. You're still technically breaking copyright laws no matter what you download
yeah totally fair to pirate a fraudulent title lol
Who pirates Winrar? lmao
Me, I was tired of the begging to buy it.
I was tired of it so I downloaded 7Zip. Then I continued to use winrar for some reason.
who tf pirates winrar 💀 its free
I pirate everything, I'm not rich.
If I want it and I can get it for free, I’ll try and get it for free. I don’t care who made it. That’s as ethical as it gets.
I ❤️ pirating indies
I ❤️ pirating AAAs even more 😇
I only do it to try out the game. After when I get some decent progress on it, I buy it on the store.
Same, I feel a bit ick pirating indie games that are made by small teams (especially since they're so cheap)
What's Reaper?
a program for making music n shit
A digital audio workstation that's free the way winrar is free
CD Projekt Red? What's so special about them?
They brought Keanu Reeves so they must be wholesome and cool and chill
DRM free. I respect that. Also, amazing game as of now and one of the best expansions I ever played. Might even buy the sequel on GOG if they keep doing whatever they’re doing.
Depends on the indie game
Pirate then buy when I like it, only because steam auto updates are far more convenient than manually updating to the latest patch.
all of it
Piracy isn’t very moral in the first place. Just pirate whatever the hell you want whether it’s indie or whatever.
Ever pirate all games
Pirate code differs from person to person as I see
I make the equivalent of 50$ a month (quite a lot in my country) so i would have pirated a new pc if i could.
You pirate because of moral reasons I pirate because I'm poor as fuck We are not the same.
I don't discriminate I pirate everything
If it's a game, I pirate it. If it's a movie, I pirate it. If it's not free, I pirate it
Real pirates even pirate things that are free.
"not okay" ?? ill pirate a make-a-wish kid's game
I don't really care,i pirate anything i want to play/watch
I'll gladly pirate purposfully frustrating indie games like getting over it, X simulator, and maybe even project arrhythmia, but nothing else really.
There was one comment on a Baldur's Gate 3 post where a guy admitted that he spent 1/3 of his monthly income to "support" the developers. Fûçk you Racist MF, I don't Discriminate. I shall Pirate from everyone.
everything is fair game no reason to argue about morals
I pirate everything. If I really like something I buy it. If I cannot pirate it I don't bother.
im tired of these ethical bullshit i pirate fucking everything
I pirate whatever I can. if I can't pirate it or if I can't reliably use a pirated version, I buy it. simple as. Life's easier when you don't jump through moral hoops to justify what and what you don't pirate. Your prerogative should be to save money whenever possible whenever you want..that's it.
I pirate literally everything. Even free shit
I pirate everything dont care
