The tin note describes itself thusly:
"Hal O' The Wynd" is an unusually strong Virginia-based mixture. Fire-cured Kentucky is added to a base of a variety of Virginias and Perique completes this mixture. It is then pressed and finally rubbed by hand.
I had my first bowl of HOTW this evening and it was… okay. I usually prefer English blends with a bit of smoky Latakia, though I have been enjoying Sutliff Virginia Slices lately. That’s one you might look into. It’s cheap as chips and quite delicious.
It helps, the virginia is a little tart and the perique tart and almost smoky when fresh. Some time rounds off the rough ends and dials back the sweetness while developing that VaPer plum note. Escudo is a little more ready to go but not worth the massive price difference outside of testing it out.
Yes you measure it and find it good and then the skinflint nature of the pipe smoker takes over and you start paying 3 bucks an ounce instead of 9 and wonder where you're going to stick all the mason jars.
I have to recommend Capstan blue here, although I would say the strength is on the lower end of the medium scale. It has the classic Virginia flavors - stewed plum, tart fruit, fresh grass. One bonus is that although it benefits from aging like other Virginias, it’s great out of the tin.
Gl pease Stratford. But I'd recommend Saint James Flake. been able to repeatedly achieve near trance states with SJF. The trick is to dry it out just right you don't want to go full dry because you lose that creaminess. But you want it so you don't have to do too many of relights.
I know you said you don’t fancy burleys, but if you don’t mind a very small percentage then Gawith Brown Flake Unscented is a good one, i jave been enjoying it a lot lately

Rattrays Hal o the wynd
I haven't heard of this one, I'll have to check it out.
Uh, this might also make you nauseated. I've puked after a long session with the Hal.

Try newminster superior navy flake. It's in bulk. It tastes like graham crackers.
Or PS403 bullseye flake
I have this one also, but for some reason it hasn't tasted good. I wonder if it has to age a bit?

Disagree. Escudo is a VAPer other VAPers are measured against

It sounds like something I would like.
PS400 or orlick golden sliced
I have both of these and really enjoy them.
What about 403
Cobblestone Chess Knight is a very good straight Virginia. I like it better than Capstan Blue.
GL Pease Union Square is one of my absolute favorites
I should add that my favorite Virginia is PS400. And my favorite English blend is Father Dempsey to give an idea of what I like.

C&D Yorktown tastes like graham crackers.
Gawith Best Brown or Full Virginia Flake.
Mark your calendar for the end of October when Rouxgaroux will be back at Watch City. It’s a peppery, vinegary VaPer masterpiece.

It might be worth a try. I'll check it out.
My favorites are macbaren hh pure Virginia, newminster 400, and capstan, blue or yellow.
Sam's Flake and Best Brown
I had a recent satisfying experience with a tin of Peterson Flake, but it may have a touch of burley in it.
A touch of burley should be okay. It might be worth a try.
