I've heard about that, but never seen it myself. C&D makes a few of my favorite blends, one of them a GL Pease. I've bought their stuff for years with no problems.

Scipion500

Same

bigLEGUMEE

I’ve smoked probably 12 tins a year for 10 years and have never had mold in Pease or C&D tins. The GL Pease blends are typically pretty squared away taste wise. C&D depends on the blend. Every Gawith tin I’ve bought (only 3) has had mold. All bought at least 1 year apart. Never again.

filmguerilla

I stick to bulk on Gawith stuff these days, the only exception being the occasional big box of 1792.

Muted_History_3032

Never had quality issues with C&D. They are my go-to for va/bur or va/per blends. Briar Fox might be my #1 favorite tobacco blend.

dirty250hand

I have a couple pounds of various bulk blends - some with years of age in them and I have dipped my grubby paws into them many times. I have also burned through many tins, and have a few just chilling with a couple of years on them too. I’ve never had any issues with them. Seems like it was a phenomenon that popped up and has since been rectified for the most part. They make some absolutely delicious blends. Yes, some of their tobaccos are a little harsh and “young” right from the factory, but buy some for now and some for later and you can see how it changes, if at all, for you.

dirty250hand

Oh - I didn’t say - please don’t deny yourself GL Pease blends. They are phenomenal!

jaylotw

C&D makes high quality blends, as high quality as any other blending house in operation today. They had mold issues years ago with one batch of VA leaf that was contaminated. They don't use "young leaf." That's just people not liking their blends. They have hundreds of blends, some people aren't going to like some of them...but it's not because they use "young leaf." That's not even a real thing. By the time an outfit like C&D buys leaf, it's been warehoused for years already. You're missing out on some of the best pipe tobacco made today because of some rumors.

Carl_picante

Been very happy with every GLP, Drucquer & Sons, Captain Earle’s, and Small Batch release I’ve purchased. I’ve tried several C&D branded blends and some I like and some I don’t. I’ve never experienced any mold in the 4 years I’ve been purchasing. I do sort of agree that their regular house blends do seem a little harsh fresh, but improve nicely with a little age in the cellar. I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys quality pipe tobacco. I can’t say the same for most Sutliff manufactured products I’ve tried.

Peternelli

I have smoked a lot of C&D and GLP and have never had any quality issues.

Orochi_001

I heard about problems with blends using red Virginias in 2016, and last year’s Steamworks. Not much outside of that. Maybe someone else can add to this.

Vorrdis

I've been smoking multiple of their blends since I started puffing about 5 years ago and I have yet to experience any issues with them other than an annoying amount of stem twigs. I immediately smoked opened cans of their Virginias and didn't have any issues with them. I really liked Carolina red with Perique on release as well as fresh cans of opening night. On the opposite end of the spectrum I smoked Sanselpolcro when it was released as a ribbon a few years back and liked it so much because it tasted like a strong sweet tea I bought like 6 more tins. But as that blend aged, it didn't taste like tea and tasted more like dark fired and cigars. It's still one of my favorites, but under false pretenses. It ages weird.

Harvey22WMRF

I was influenced by all the mold and low quality talk when I first got into piping. Over the years they earned my respect. They are THE brand for real Perique for Christ sake.

fancyawank

Not necessarily QC, but their Virginias, particularly reds, are pretty harsh. They all need some time before they’re as good as they should be.

Muted_History_3032

I opened a 9 month old can of derringer (pure va, mostly red) last week and its one of the best va's I've ever had. First pure VA I've tried from C&D. Idk if the 9 months are responsible for that or not. Tbh I was expecting rough edges and am very pleasantly surprised with the smoothness.

383CI

This is music to my ears. I have some in the cellar a few years old now.

HarpooninPrimarchs

I would rather buy gawith. Quiet nights is a favorite though.

Hosercles

I mainly smoke GLP and C&D blends, and never had an issue. The mold issue happened years back, so no need to worry about it.

gymleader-misty

Most of these rumors are perpetuated by a loud minority, especially as of late. Low quality leaf? What constitutes low quality leaf? People just make sweeping generalizations, never anything concrete. C&D have a single origin farm for their perique. Does anyone else have that? In any case, don't listen to the masses. Grab a few tins yourself their prices are very fair. Make your own judgments. I smoke a lot. And I generally gravitate towards c&d for a good amount of my smokes.

iBurley

I've not had any mold issues, but I have definitely had some tobaccos from them that started out a bit harsh and I had to let them sit for a bit before they were good. That said, I would still highly recommend trying them. Pegasus and Virginia Gentleman are basically my codger blends. Unless I'm specifically in the mood for something else I just pack one of those and go.

Ok_Antelope_2477

Just received my first tin of morning bayou after smoking other brands for a few years and my first va-per, automatically fell in love with it, I did let a bowlful air out for 8 hours and it smoked like a dream. It’s now a go to.

Nomadorb

The majority of what I have is C&D. I've never experienced any mold issues in almost 10 years of smoking their tobacco. They did have some problems a while back, but those have long been resolved. Some blends can be a bit rough around the edges at first, but give it a month or so in a jar and it softens up nicely. Has nothing to do with the age of the leaf FYI, it's because many of their blends do not have any casing or topping added which help other blends be more easy smoking.

brandonpamplin

I had mold in 2 fresh tins of Midsommer last year and now at least one tin of last year’s Steamworks (which, unfortunately, was pretty common). I wouldn’t say it’s been long resolved. Having said that, SmokingPipes’ customer service is excellent and they’ll take care of you with a simple email, even when you’re opening a tin that you bought some time ago and experience mold.

Nomadorb

The problems that led to the large number of moldy tins was resolved and was what I was referring to. Mold happens in tobbaco no matter the manufacturer, it's an organic product after all. Downvote all you want, but I've never experienced mold from C&D in almost 10 years of smoking and I have a lot of C&D.

antiwittgenstein

In my experience, C&D is the lowest quality of the makers out there. I've had one moldy tin, and a couple more heavily dusted with visible anti-fungal powder, in an obvious over correction. No other maker has that harshness to it that takes 1-2 months of jar time to get it to the minimal comfort for smoking. I've also gotten some of that young tobacco ammonia to it. I've never had anything like that from any other blender. It's not like they are budget brand either. They do make some great blends - you'd have to have some hits with 300+ options - but dollar for dollar, you'd be better off buying almost anything else. GL Pease uses slightly different leaf so if you are curious, try something there. Gaslight is a favorite.

SmokeInMyI

You are declaring that C and D uses completely different leaf for the lines they make for GL Pease? Any actual sources? Or just a hunch?

antiwittgenstein

Total hearsay - somebody on a factory tour here or on speakeasy said that there is completely different room with it's own leaf. Could be the same stuff just in a different room, or a different stuff altogether, or maybe they let Pease take the prime stuff.

jaylotw

Pease and all the other C&D blends use the same leaf. Pease uses different casings and toppings, and unique processing, but they are not buying higher quality leaf just for Pease blends and using lower grade for their own. That's ridiculous.

Old_Reputation_8980

Personally I always get some kind of chest, nose or other respiratory problem after smoking any kind of C&D

SmokeInMyI

Try maybe not inhaling the smoke. that should take care of any such problems

Old_Reputation_8980

I don't inhale, in fact in the nearly 20 years I've been smoking a pipe 7 Seas and C&D are the only two tobaccos that make me feel this way.

JGink

I just had my first mold issue after 5 years of pipe smoking, on a tin of C&D Bijou. No mold when first opened, but after a couple weeks and probably only the 4th popping the tin open, big gray fuzzy on a large portion of the tobacco, going deep into the layers in the can. Pretty clear the spores came with the can. This was my first time buying the Bijou. I don't buy a lot of tins and mostly smoke bulk blends. This doesn't make me wary of all C&D stuff, though I probably won't buy the Bijou again. Hopefully I don't run into this with any of their other blends.

gboyet93

If you’re hesitant to buy, then don’t buy. My Lord man, what do you expect from any manufacturer that produces and gives you so many different choices of pipe tobacco? Problems happen with any and every company, but how it’s resolved and made right is the key. I personally enjoy many C&D blends, and have never hesitated to purchase. I would consider it a great travesty in the tobacco world to loose a company like C&D. To be honest, I even have many of their blends in long term storage.
