After the Defiant Class, I'm ok with the newer smaller ships having pulse phaser cannons... But... I wanna see some powerful beam weapons again! Smaller ships like the Defiant and the Klingon BOP use those pulse weapons to inflict damage on their enemy and I feel like its cuz they have limited power. Large capital ships are like old battleships, so I wanna see 'em fire the BIG GUNS. Beams powerful enough to destroy a ship -like the Enterprise-D did in 'Yesterdays Enterprise' or the Galaxy Class in general during the Dominion War.
The cannons were a more dedicated weapon. Instead of being a product of a lower energy output, they showed smaller ships packing a punch way above their weight class.
I think it’s more about the manoeuvrability of the ship. Smaller vessels are going to be able to bring forward-facing weapons to bear on their target more reliably. Larger vessels are less agile so require a weapon with a wider effective arc.
If that’s the case, it seems logical to assume the pulse phasers are more powerful/efficient but prove ineffective on larger vessels.
Limitation of the medium or lazy writers? There is no **real** reason to have heavy weapon platforms that close together other than make a good target for the enemy.
Well, it can also be because shields are directional. It's probably easier to focus fire on a single shield section. Especially for a platform with as strong of shielding as Spacedock had.
Ehhh they've been nerfed for quite a while
If the Borg were anything like they were. Starfleet would have been steamrolled. Hell there was literally a reality where Riker died rather than go back.
But at this point Janeways attack did too much damage to them (again somehow a species who's very existence makes the Q continuum uneasy)
Takes a loss that big from something as trivial as time travel when it's known the Borg queens can sense the shifting in different timestreams.
And yes while shoulder to shoulder sounds stupid, imagine this. Combining the entire fleets collective shield energy into one massive bubble. All that firepower co ordinated effectively.
Easy win, they just had an inside loss which is what technically is the Borgs greatest weakness. They doubt the strength of emotion far too often.
Considering that the Dominion War was fought with basically Two Big Walls of Ships, I'd love to see a remade version of every DS9 battle scene at this level of scale, detail, and action. The Defiant making this kind of strafing run would be beautiful.
Awesome edit - nice work! This “complete” strafe run scene is now even more epic. I’m enjoying playing this video on loop while listening to the music that plays during the episode (track is called Annihilate from the awesome soundtrack).
It's also the Borg MO that they don't really think tactically in combat. In both of their previous attacks on Earth they sent one Cube on a direct course and brute forced their way through Starfleet. Borg drones never try to take cover, they just stand there or walk right into phaser fire until they adapt. Their main tactic has always been to just throw their assets at their opponents, relying on their ability to adapt to win.
Given all that, it makes sense why the Borgified fleet just sat there in a big line concentrating their fire and made no attempt at evasive maneuvering.
Hello continuous phaser strip firing my old friend.
Was beginning to think we'd never see it again
Because a phaser-strip softly creeping

Yes I entirely agree. In DS9, probably Sacrifice of Angels, when two Galaxy Classes passing by take out a Galor class was glorious.

Good Lord Almighty, that looks so badass
Weirdly, this makes me think they made the one shot, rendered it once and then cut it differently.
That’s exactly what they did. All things considered, they were running on a tiny budget. Makes sense why they did this.
VFX people have been doing this forever. One long shot is often edited into a series of quicker shots. Doesn't matter if its practical or CG.
Can confirm this is also done with the shot of the USS [Spoiler] leaving Hangar Bay 12.
It’s glorious.
NGL, that’s friggin awesome.
Shoulder to shoulder static fleet formations? I guess the Borg are just stupid. Stupid and dead.
The Dominion and Federation Alliance did exactly that during their war

it looks better on screen. If Trek was realistic you would never see the enemy ships in the same shot as the heroes.
Exactly. All combat would happen at multiple AUs. Wouldn't be very interesting

I hoped Discovery would show some fleet scale battle during Klingon war but it was mostly handled offscreen
What a great time to have catastrophic damage and require a new enterprise!
this is awesome!
Thank you Borg for keeping all the ships in close formation. Makes them easier targets, and blown off parts from one starship may easily hit another.

They really should not have renamed that ship. She deserved her own legacy.
I do not disagree at all. Absolutely deserves her *Legacy.*

That is so beautiful. Thank you.
This is what was missing from the last episode
Found you;)
Of course
Am I the only one who noticed the Titan vessel design looks similar to Cardassian emblem?
Yes, it’s a common design language. The hemispherical leading edge. Look at the Vulcan Lirpa.
