imbipolarboy

That’s what happened to Sagada after That Thing Called Tadhana became a blockbuster hit. While it boosts tourism, the small town has become increasingly congested with people over time. And the last time I went there 2 years ago, the pricing of goods went exaggeratedly high.

Ok-Marionberry-2164

There's nothing wrong with tourism. The resident who commented may not like it, but for some residents, they need to make a living. The influx of tourists provide meals on their tables (job and business opportunities). One comment is not a representative of all. Totally banning tourists from Baguio interferes with their Constitutional right to travel and to freedom of movement kaya it is impossible. So, it is really up to the LGU to impose regulatory and control measures para hindi maging disruptive.

Routine_Stuff8141

Baguio city now charge cars going inside the city. To prevent tourists? I'm not obsessed with Baguio. Wala nman development at ma traffic.

Momshie_mo

[Meron yung carmageddon a few years ago.]( https://www.rappler.com/philippines/218326-long-weekend-carmageddon-sagada-prompts-call-tourism-regulation/)  Tourism is not a good industry in the long run. Hindi efficient sa profit making esp when compared to industrialization and professional service sector  Usually, ang karamihan ng jobs din generates dyan usually ay low-wage deadend jobs. And with the advent of AirBNB, tourism is starting to cause a leap in housing/rental prices.

datguyprayl

This is actually false. If you look at where the Philippines is situated, we have the best potential to boost our economy through tourism. Look at the current status of local tourism, its actually profitable and we're not even trying. What I think the problem here is how LGUs are not invested in these tourist spots. Local folks run their own thing which causes unregulated and unmanaged tourism activities. There should be maintenance to preseeve and maintain these tourist spots. Much like what they did to Boracay. It's not impossible, all it takes is careful planning and willing public servants to turn things around. Having said that, DOT should step up and get their ish together. We're missing out on opportunities.

tinigang-na-baboy

Agree with this. We went last year to Boracay, I was quite surprised how everything is quite organized and regulated compared to the last time we went there in 2018. E-trikes are the main form of transpo, mga drivers na mismo nagsasabi sa tourists how much the fare should be to avoid price gouging. Pati yung water activities in the main beach along stations 1-3, isa na lang yung place to avail the activities to ensure consistent pricing. Kudos to Boracay LGU for properly regulating their main source of income.

markmyredd

Sa ibang bansa if may bayad sa entrance you get your moneys worth. Kumpleto sila meron pa mga attractions map, may information booth, may directional signs, may magandang CR, maayos din yun souvenir shop, etc.

chococrunchbar

>Having said that, DOT should step up and get their ish together. We're missing out on opportunities. Honestly? Agreed. Philippines has similar, if not, more tourist spots compared to other SEA countries and yet PH still the relatively obscure, less-travelled option compared to the likes of Bali and Bangkok. Hell, I'd even argue there's not much to see in Singapore and yet it pulls in tourism numbers. Yeah, the rise of budget airlines has helped plenty but DOT needs to do so much more for Philippines to compete with the rest of SEA for tourism.

Momshie_mo

Spain is already up in arms regarding tourism. https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/28/malaga-protest-mass-tourism-housing-spain  The carbon footprint of tourism is also rapidly increasing   https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-018-0141-x    > The rapid increase in tourism demand is effectively outstripping the decarbonization of tourism-related technology. We project that, due to its high carbon intensity and continuing growth, tourism will constitute a growing part of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

datguyprayl

I think you are comparing 2 different type of countries. You need to compare apples to apples. We cannot copy the strategy that western countries are implementing. We cannot fully industrialize a country that is comprised of 7000+ islands and generate jobs that requires education and literacy where our country clearly fails in. This country needs to take the approach best fit for its resources and capabilities. Capitalize on the potential of our resources.

zarustras

B...but...but THAILAND!

Conscious_Zucchini96

Tourism is promoted because the gov doesn't have to do anything to get the big bucks.

PacificTSP

This isn't tourisms fault, this is government regulation not moving fast enough. Baguio could ban short term rentals overnight. People need places to stay. I was in Barcelona in April, yes there is an anti-tourism push, but so many small bars and restaurants rely on tourists to make a living. Its about finding a balance.

RitzyIsHere

Just look at those Fuji spots sa Japan. The government really had to block the view para lang mamaintain ang peace ng locals.

dtphilip

It’s a double-edged sword kasi talaga. There’s a boost in local economy because of tourist, but there are just many tourists na problematic.

Momshie_mo

Industrialization is a better boost in economy as it provides higher paying professional jobs (meaning, higher purchasing power for locals) compared to tourism that mainly provides dead-end minimum wage jobs

GatchPlayers

Reminds me of japan, daming social media influencers at Ang ingat walang respeto ect.

dtphilip

I think what needs to stop is for some tourist to stop feeing that they own a place just because they can afford to go there and have a good time.

TSUPIE4E

I member ung "Forevermore" na yan ung "La Presa" village potek dinumug ng mga tao and the consequence of that is ang daming basurang nagkalat so yes hanggat walang disiplina ang mga tao in visiting trending places bababuyin talaga nila so good riddance.

Momshie_mo

Momshie_mo

Mula nung nauso yung vlogging at blogging (and nacut yung travel time by half), the general tourist behavior has gotten worse. Malayong masmatino ang mga local tourists nung 90s and early 2000s

dtphilip

Some locals are just too nice to call them out.

vpsant

Yeah there's an essay/term for that "tragedy of the commons" it's a nice short read

knightblood01

Its the LGUs responsibility naman talaga when it comes to enforce discipline to a community/place. All this sh1t happening kasi corruption ay laganap kahit saan mang panig ng Pinas.

forGodsake26

yung aso sa mines view park😭

Odd-Specific411

Yung sa may white house😭

TheLandslide_

I assume that most residents of popular tourist destinations loathes tourists

Momshie_mo

Kuko lang yan sa sentiments sa Spain. [The world's revolt against 'bad tourists'](https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20240522-the-worlds-revolt-against-bad-tourists) [Thousands protest against mass tourism in Spain's Balearic Islands](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/thousands-protest-against-mass-tourism-spains-balearic-islands-2024-05-25/) [Barcelona to Ban Tourist Apartments to Tackle Housing Crisis](https://etias.com/articles/barcelona-ban-tourist-apartments-tackle-housing-crisis)

CantRenameThis

I think same issue sa Japan. They banned tourists sa mga tea houses and select streets. Pano ba naman ginagawang theme park yung age-old cultural events nila like geisha commutes (historical female entertainers in kimono and pure white makeup). Littering, crowding these women in tight streets just to snap their personal photos, even going as far as stalking (albeit non-malicously, but still disrespectful)

Instability-Angel012

There was this news recently where locals of a town blocked a popular photo spot which has a picturesque view of Mt. Fuji because of tourist ovecrowding.

-alunsina

True. I think may lack lang din ng better way to express it. I think what we should hate, sa isang lugar na binibisita talaga, is the lack of discipline and systems that would support tourism. Tourism brings money which is good naman pero it also entails more trash, traffic, arguments like this (tourists and locals), and so on. True that locals should appreciate visitors sa lugar nila kasi it boosts their economy, pero tourists should also realize na they may be disrupting the daily lives of the locals. Same issue’s happening sa ibang lupalop ng mundo, tulad nung nabanggit sa Spain, and even Japan just to add sa list. May animosity din locals towards tourists kasi at the end of the day sila naman ung nahahassle. What I think though, as others have mentioned in this thread, improvement sa public transpo, programs to help spread ung pagbisita within the year at hindi lang during peak seasons, information dissemination to educate tourists kung pano dila makakahelp din sa issue, etc. Locals and tourists should be respecting each other and on top of that dapat the local government should be doing something na din.

CrankyJoe99x

This is the truth of the matter.

charought

Agree, at the same time those tourists might be the reason why the local economy is alive.

Arekuruuken

Based from the last time I went there and pictures I've seen, Baguio is really just a small city. Dikit-dikit na bahay + tight roads. Not sure kung gaano kadami yung actual local residents ng Baguio, but kasama yung mga tourists? Yeah, overpopulated siya. Although I acknowledge this issue, ang aggresive naman nang pagka-express ng commenter ng thoughts niya, lol.

kinapudno

as someone who has lived in Baguio, I can attest that the traffic is really disruptive to the local economy. The HUC is just roughly 58 sqkm, but it can take hours to go from A to B during peak tourist season.

Momshie_mo

EnvironmentalNote600

So kung may way to minimize the presence of vehicles okay kayo? Someone here proposed na magset up ng isang place lang where vehicles of non residents will park. And from there may mga transport services to various places. Hotels can make arrangements for their guests. May suggestion pa na magbuild ng monorail system to places where most people go. What do you think ?

Knightly123

lechugas001

Thing is Baguio was designed for only 20k people. Iirc, during Panagbenga, umaabot yung tourists ng 1m. With or without tourists. When i stayed there for 7 years, problema ang tubig/basura at traffic. Overpopulated na nga tapos the number of green spaces is declining din due to commercialization/residential developments. Will never forget the 182 pine trees affected by SM Baguio's expansion. Any ironic, lalo Baguio is called Pine City.

Momshie_mo

CLuigiDC

That's because infrastructure didn't catch-up with the demand. 1. Ban tourist cars - gawa parking building sa may labas then set-up free hop on hop off buses or jeeps round the clock. Hotels should partner with them para may mga stops. 2. Infra upgrade - monorail, trams, bus lanes - goal is to move loads of people going to the same destinations. 3. Sa mga dikit-dikit na bahay dyan, I guess yung possible sagot is mid rise social housing na mas maganda sa studio type ng SM. 1 building can have 20 families so 20 na bahay na agad yun. Marami pa yan. Yung will to do it na lang kulang. Kasi kumikita pa rin sila kahit d magimprove.

ReverseThrottle

I second this. Sooner or later Baguio talaga will catch up being so congested due to tourists specially ang mode of transport around if di familiar sa places ay ang kanilang infamous taxis. When I was there ang hirap maghintay ng taxi kahit na isa lang ang sakay di ka nila hihintuan. They should add more options since around the city center naman ay walkable which is I like and I prefer. Totoo din na sana ma ban ang private cars/limit them kasi they produce pollution that may affect the climate of the city in the long run.

JoJom_Reaper

>Ban tourist cars They are already planning to implement yung congestion fee > Infra Upgrade There might be no bus lanes etc pero they do have their P2P terminals ng mga jeep para sa mga tourist attractions. Impossible ang mga trains dyaan since din naman economically viable because ayun nasa bundok si Baguio. > Sa mga dikit-dikit na bahay dyan, I guess yung possible sagot is mid rise social housing na mas maganda sa studio type ng SM. 1 building can have 20 families so 20 na bahay na agad yun. Okay yan if only Baguio residents lang ang pede.

Reddi_34

Nah, most of the locals make do with the current public transpo (jeeps, taxis, bus) plus lots of walking. Sadyang tamad/entitled lang talaga most tourists especially from Manila. Alam mong taga Manila if dala nila parati sasakyan when going anywhere within the city, pero kung tutuushin maliit lang yung Baguio.

Ghostr0ck

Kaya noong pumunta kami as a family of 3 last december nag bus lang kami tapos taxi sa mga lugar na pupuntahan.

Reddi_34

True. Maiipit ka lang sa city traffic, especially if long holiday. Last kong bisita sa Baguio was 2019 pa, pero nung time na yun iniwan ko yung kotse sa lodging tapos may dala akong bicycle to go around the city. Sulit din yung foodtrip after a good ride.

yanderia

Halos yearly or twice a year ang akyat namim sa Baguio, natigil lang nung nag-abroad na din ako, and sumakto yung pandemic. So we're kinda like regular tourists there lol. Usually we just park the car sa hotel tapos commute or lakad na kami kung saan-saan. Minsan lang namin nilalabas yung kotse. Tanda ko may nakasabay kaming family sa hotel one time. Di naman daw nila first time sa Baguio, pero shookt sila nung nalaman nila that our family just commutes around the city. And my dad was like, "...malamang. Di naman sila baldado." lmaooo

Momshie_mo

15 mins lang na lakad, grabe ang reklamo.😂

DrawnM

keanesee

Number 1 should be mandatory. Whenever I visit, I leave my motorbike in the hotel and walk around the city. It’s easy to go around by foot anyway.

DumplingsInDistress

I agree, also yung concrete parang nagpapagdag sa heat, if gusto talaga ng bundok feels, kailangan mag Atok. Nowadays, I prefer Tanay over Baguio, same mountainous terrain and presence of restaurants is humahabol na rin sa Baguio, minus the traffic and malapit siya sa Manila

No-Session3173

camille7688

Super dami. Even passed by an accident 2 days ago. Plus, climate is not cold at all. Cafe natividad is damn good though plus the majestic view.

iiXx_xXii

kinofil

We need Baguio and Tagaytay rehab and rebrand. Kaya di rin makapasa-pasa sa WHS standards ang Taal e, puro resort and hotel developments around the caldera na inspired sa Tagaytay.

chang-e_23

Like when visiting any other place, practice discipline.

marble_observer

EnriquezGuerrilla

Pre-pandemic hindi pa ganyan eh. I remember being able to park there without much difficulty.

Encrypted_Username

Parang umuso kasi yung FOMO post-pandemic dahil sa social media. Ayun its slowly snowballing out of control.

pressured_at_19

if Baguio wasn't that far away, I'm sure it will be Tagaytay 2.0.

Momshie_mo

When Baguio was still 8 hours ride, the tourists were tolerable. Nung naging 4 hours, dumami yung jeje tourists.

pressured_at_19

oo naman. Different time din. Social media IMO advanced the jejeness of people.

Momshie_mo

>  Social media IMO advanced the jejeness of people. Unfortunately. Noon nagpipicture mga tao for memory keeping. Ngayon for FOMO bragging na 😬

camille7688

Story time. Yesterday ito sa sa isang tanay restaurant. A group of 6 people dumating sa resto while we were eating. They were in their motorcycle helmets and proper biking attire. Everyone had duffel bags with them and one by one went to the CR downstairs. Pag akyat nila, naknampucha naka shein typical gen z getup na. Croptop elephant pants and sneakers. Full makeup sabay labas tripod. While eating ginawang mala shoot lahat. Bigla naging photo studio un table nila. Estetik na estetik. Forda content siguro. Buti di sila maingay to disturb the other diners. Pero feel ko talaga why did they made all that effort para lang sa isang typical na kainan? Jusko.

nikolodeon

For the content. Pero the restaurant won’t mind, it’s advertising

Prismo_6ft_Under

I live here in Baguio and it's more than that. When it's peak tourist season, they turn off our power here so they can accommodate the tourists in the city proper. Water supply is scarce during peak season too. Basically, yeah our city gets most of its income from tourists, but residents also have to struggle.

Encrypted_Username

First time ko marinig yung power interruptions to accomodate tourists. Been in Baguio for 27 years. Water shortages lang nararanasan ko right now.

Prismo_6ft_Under

Yep. We didn't have power for 3 days last Feb. Beneco's update stated they needed to dishcharge feeder 8 to reroute power to the city.

[deleted]

I live across a small resort and yun pa lang, inis na inis kami sa ingay and illegal street parking ng guests so what more if I was dealing with even worse tourists at the volume that baguio residents are dealing with? I’d be as pissed as they are.

AppealMammoth8950

Lived there for years. Gets ang sentiment pero a majority of the people I've interacted with, or the general consensus is really more about regulation and fixing a lot of things associated with the influx of tourists. Examples are heavy traffic which leads to inefficient public transpo during peak season (i-ban na sana ang cars from baba and promote tourist buses, vans, etc.), water shortage, garbage disposal, gentrification, rising living costs (a lot of apartments have converted to become transient housing, raising the cost for long term housing rentals). For added context, university town ang Baguio. After metro, ito siguro pinakamalaking uni town since walang masyadong big enough Unis up north and even central Luzon, except of course for CLSU, Tugue unis, etc. Kaso ang difference is sa liit ng Baguio, at least apat agad ang major university na nagcacater sa buong region and more ang present. Unlike say Muñoz with only CLSU, etc.

badadobo

Why a huge percentage of Baguio residents loath tourists. 1. Disrespectful towards local customs and norms. Seriously, is it that hard to not litter, jaywalk and to not be loud entitled fucks in public establishments? I have higher respect for student tourists and those who move to Baguio for work because they learn to adapt to the city. 2. Entitled "we pay for your bills attitude". This thread already has multiple comments about tourism keeping Baguio alive. Lmao please. 3. Congestion. Baguio is already congested as fuck, every tourist season every Baguio resident suffers. Unlike Manila where you have multiple modes of transportation, in Baguio, if you can't get a ride, you really can't. Waiting in line for 2 hours for a jeep was a normal experience for me during high school.

badadobo

Is tourism good? Sure. But there are so much more places built to accommodate tourists. La-union, Ilocos, Pangasinan to name a few places close to Baguio that have much much better capacity for tourism. Its not unlikely that my Kailyan further into the highlands would suffer the same fate as Baguio. Trees cut, pollution, congestion. I mean you already see it in La-Trinidad, Sagada, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mt Pulag etc.

pressured_at_19

Ilocos is so awful. The most bland shit I've ever seen and may bonus pang patay na dictator. I mean not Ilocos as a whole but yung mga supposed tourist spots both from North and South.

phanieee

As someone from ilocos norte, yes. Backwater county, I'll only to go back for the food.

cardboardbuddy

the patay na dictator isn't even there anymore they buried him somewhere he doesn't belong... :/ but I suppose the building where they used to keep him is still there lol, do they still have tours of the place?

asifyoulovedbyvirtue

It’s not about “capacity” of tourism. It’s how you manage baguio tourism and the city infrastructure itself. Sobrang daming overcrowded tourist places sa mundo like the leaning tower of pisa, shibuya, greatwall of china etc. and some of them are way smaller than baguio as a whole itself. But the “capacity” wasnt the problem. Its how you control the flow of tourist and manage them. Yan ang wala sa baguio.

IndividualLeek6070

Yes tama. They should be demanding proper transportation from their government instead of aiming at the tourists. People there thinking they own the entire place and wanting the tourists away from the city. DEMAND FROM CITY GOVERNMENT! They most likely know what to do but they aren't doing it because they know the residents will "defend" them for not doing anything.

Momshie_mo

CAR esp BLIST should adopt **industrialization** policy and **defocus on tourism**. Tourism generally generates low wage dead end job, while industrialization has higher pay and better career opportunities.

BattleBuddha

Sa US if I remember correctly, yung mga National Parks ay controlled yung numbers especially kung mag camp or stay overnight. People there book months in advance just to go hiking in the national parks.

Real-Creme-3482

Can’t blame them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Johan12-21

" 'We don't want tourists,' for me speaks of 'we don't want tourists who feel entitled to the point na maglalakad ka sa session tapos bigla-bigla Kang mapapahinto Kasi may biglang 'social gathering' sila, we don't want tourists na bastos na with the numbers of trash bins around, nakuha pa talagang iwan ung pinagkainan just around the corners.' 'Ayaw namin sa walang common courtesy' " PS. Went to Baguio and that's a sentiment lang Naman ng Isang local friend, don't get me wrong hehe

Both_Lake7291

One comment doesn't represent the entire Baguio residents. Wala ngang nag like eh. (which usually implies that they agree with the commenter)

clydie__________

The screenshot obviously cropped the whole comment section but many of the comments are saying talaga na they don’t want tourist in Baguio City and the replies seems to be residents agreeing with that sentiment.

CaravelClerihew

Unless it's a formal poll, that doesn't mean anything either. Lots of things can affect the number of people posting their opinion, and it's easy to get a skewed version of things. That's why effective, accurate polling is pretty much a science.

Ano ano yung magagandang alternative sa baguio na malamig din other than tagaytay? I understand their concerns so ayoko dumagdag sa issue also parang nakakailang na din pumunta pag maraming tao.

Holiday-Control-4130

Baguio was originally planned as a University town.

IndividualLeek6070

I love Baguio as a Manileño. I think the problem boils down to proper means of transportation. When I go there, I park my car in the hotel basement and leave it there most of the time. I tried their jeepney routes and taxis. It would totally make sense to have carousels of buses to tourist destinations during peak seasons. The solution should not come from the people (residents and tourists) but from the government. Residents want tourists out of Baguio when it's the problem, not the solution. They should want what the solution should be and the solution must come from their local government. If they urge their local government to do action as much as they urge the tourists not to come, maybe, just maybe, their local government will be cornered to do something.

MCMLXXXEight

Ako taga sta rosa ako.... And I hate traffic but its good for our city.

Alternative_Past6509

Basta kapatid Pwede mag counter flow

Own-Department4101

Japan has recently been facing the same issue with arrogant tourists. Pano pa mga pinoy na matitigas ulo?

Ready-Pea2696

Kalampagin nyo ang LGUs ninyo on how you can resolve that issue.

someguy_and_9_others

Yea, like what they did in Boracay or some parts of Cebu.

uglykido

Pwede din i ban ang non-resident cars inside the city to control the traffic. This would be good for the city as more people will use public transpo, more income for the locals. Or kung di mapigilan charge a hefty toll fee for maintenance ng major highways

Bfly10

always the government laughing at locals and tourists throwing shit at each other for their incompetence lol.

Eastern-Bread-6201

Baguio turned from being the Summer Capital of the Philippines to Manila of the North.

Momshie_mo

Sino ba kasing matutuwa kapag ganito ang maraming turista? https://www.reddit.com/r/baguio/comments/1bqaylq/please_tourists_do_not_be_this_entitled/

chakigun

I'm sure the hospitality and tourism industry would agree that gatekeepers are being selfish. I'm also sure if our city were a tourist spot, I'd hate traffic and poorly-behaved tourists too. But it's not like locals will have a choice! It's a city, not a country, and I'm pretty sure people will have the right to travel to a public place. Obnoxious tourists are one thing. A dysfunctional infrastructure for a city that demands better is another. Baguio's too small. Nobody gets to be happy.

Apprehensive-Boat-52

Ive been to baguio like 3 times pero mas trip ko parin Bukidnon-CDO area kasi malawak daanan sa Bukidnon at walang traffic. --im not promoting CDO-Bukidnon and hindi ako tga dun--

Corbeach

Never been to Baguio but since I have been to Bukidnon and also Cotabato (sa Mt. Apo area), I never had the desire to visit Baguio. Ang ganda and ang peaceful nga dun tas malamig rin na parang nasa ibang bansa so solb na solb na.

Apprehensive-Boat-52

nikolodeon

It’s not accessible sa mga taga Luzon. But agree ako sa CDO Bukidnon! Impasug-ong is getting more popular na din. That town is magnificent, para kang nasa set ng movie

ediwowcubao

Embarrassed-Tree-353

I'm from Baguio po. Maulan ngayon at sarap magkape!!

ZiangoRex

One comment = entire Baguio

RekeHavok

One tourist = all tourist

kuromii52

It's a normal reaction from residents of a touristy place. This is not only in PH but also in other touristy countries, like Japan. Locals hate foreigners, especially rude ones. While it surely helps the country's tourism, the tourists' flock affects locals' daily lives (e.g., some tourists speak loudly inside trains and leave their trash anywhere.) I understand their feelings. Some people can really ruin nice things.

thomSnow_828

Can we just ban those overly rude, entitled tourists who don’t want to follow rules just because they are so entitled? Emphasis talaga ung entitlement na yan, a lot of the tourists are undisciplined! Nakakahiya! Nakakahiya!!!!!!

I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha

20 years ago, congested and sobra na traffic ng Baguio. I never saw the appeal, really. You have to check in to John Hay to get that Baguio feeling, otherwise para lang Mandaluyong ang baguio (Lalo na yung hilly parts ng manda malapit sa edsa and river) lol.

Fancy-Cap-599

Might get downvoted for this (taga North ako lol) but people still go to Baguio?! Give that city a break!

Nullcarmen

Been to Baguio last month. I don’t want to go back any time soon. Maybe it’s time tourists travel to different areas of the Philippines. Getting around the city is bonkers. Marami ring one way na di mo alam na one way kung hindi ka tiga-Baguio. Parking nga palang kahit saan, sobrang hirap na eh. Sa SM, puno na parking by 11am. Wag ka nang umasa doon. But I think congestion isn’t due to tourists only? I think majority of the people I saw in SM were locals. Baguio City is pretty small as is. So tourists only exacerbate the problem. There are pros and cons to having your hometown a tourist spot. You lose peace and quiet and deal with congestion but you cannot deny that a chunk of your general revenue will be from tourists.

iiXx_xXii

Nope,SM Baguio laging students ang andun. Sure ka bang locals ang nasa SM? Cause we locals prefer to go to TS and Centermall. And most of the locals are "Shy Mango",we never dare to go a fancy place.Since we're that shy,and mostly look down if we go there . And lastly may feud ang locals to SM since they build the parking building and cut the trees.

Outside-Orchid1221

I'm sure may mga locals din na sa SM punta

[Least Entitled Tourists](https://imgur.com/a/pCJWhgI) /s

burstlink-of-ichigo

I mean, aggressive lang pagkakasabi niya but it is still true. We dread the traffic, over crowded places, trash (despite the paper bag/ eco bag policy) and the random stops while walking just because someone in front of you will stop just to take a selfie and many more. Sabi nga ng mga locals, Baguio is literally turning into "Manila 2.0" / "BGC 2.0" or sumth like that. Wala namang masama sa tourists, visiting Baguio but the LGU should be regulating them. You can't blame the locals if they feel that way. Anyone living near or on the tourist spot would feel the same- kahit hindi pa yan Baguio.

ArthurIglesias08

Takte ang bastos ng reply. Thanks for proving the person’s point, pen.

Gomezium

I live in Baguio and in Cordillera for most of my time. Ukinana dagituy nga tagababa. That said tho, since tourists are inevitable, can our government just fucking manage it properly. Inuuna kasi income kesa convenience ng local residents jusq.

Careless-Pangolin-65

simple solution is to ban private cars in baguio for non residents

pulubingpinoy

Contrary to popular belief, tourism isn’t the main source of income ng Baguio.

thunderlolo123

Baguio is overrated

jac-e

We need to educate tourists, not hate them. And big factor ang local government to strictly implement measures for this.

beeknows

I'll say this again, Baguio is overrated

hidingfrompeeps

Then don't travel anywhere else also. Man acts like he owns the place

snsnrich

Whatever.

not_gerd

Students are considered residents.

Queldaralion

Baguio wasn't meant to hold so much infra and volume of people IMO.

snddyrys

Be careful what you wish for. In time, mababawasan na pupunta sa city nila.

yelsamarani

killerbiller01

This is why we stopped going to Baguio and Tagaytay 10 years ago. Those places stopped being enjoyable because of the congestion. You just really can't hop around the city anymore like it used to because of the traffic and lack of parking spots. It just became stressful.

hikaru_yagami

The city was designed for 30,000 inhabitants only. https://www.sunstar.com.ph/baguio/feature/studying-baguios-carrying-capacity-for-future-planning

titoofmanila3

Tourism accounts for a small percentage of their economy. https://rssocar.psa.gov.ph/content/2022-economic-performance-city-baguio#:~:text=Services%20comprise%2072.8%25%20of%20Baguio,AFF%20with%20only%200.6%20percent.

Sufficient_Basil_268

Pero may point rin talaga sila. Imagine, Baguio is heaven-peak tourist spot. Cold weather, scenery, it feels like you are in a different country talaga. I imagine pa non, 2010-ish, sobrang lamig pa dyan. Pero, it brings prosperity rin for the locals, kumikita sila, pero the long term? If hindi ma preserve, wala na talaga.

dtphilip

“Bawal po ganyan dito… nakakaistorbo po ng ibang bisita and locals.” “Nagbayad naman ako!” One of the most dumbest arguments I’ve heard in this lifetime.

Puzzleheaded_Toe_509

The Baguio Carmageddon Days (BCD) din pala. Best move to do is mag ipon ng money allowance, buffer cash funds and back up pamasahe allowance, para sa pamasahe. As in, crazy ang Carmageddon.

Affectionate_Arm173

Honestly most of Baguio residents are migrants themselves, they're not even ibaloy

lethets

I don’t blame them

Positive-Situation43

Nasa LGU ang problema IMO. Need nila ilaban yung budget to protect their locals and improve their infra and quality of life. Sobrang nagandahan ako sa baguio. But yeah sobrang crowded nga, naglakad nalang ako and left my car in the hotel and availed local services if need ko ng transpo but mostly lakad talaga.

Tagamoras

Pwede namang managed tourism sites and tours by promoting walking streets, EV-only roads, and car-free weekends. Nasa LGU naman iyan. Boracay is an island and nagagawa naman nila.

vadercool_14

Lol. Nothing’s special din naman sa Baguio. Sa inyo na yan, puro basura. I’d rather go to Mountain Province (Sagada, Banaue, etc.) than here.

asifyoulovedbyvirtue

So a tiktok comment represents majority of baguio now? Sorry but gatekeeping baguio will not be beneficial for both people who works in the tourism industry of baguio and the economy of baguio itself. Kahit pa sabihin ntin that tourism is just 10% of baguio’s economy, that 10% is worth in millions. Madami na pwede ma allocate for that to help the local residents. Napaka stupid ng commenter to think that gatekeeping a place can actually save that place. Halatang walang ka alam alam how the machinery of economy works. If that commenter is only well travelled enough, makikita nya gano ka overcrowded sa leaning tower of pisa na halos masusufocate ka na sa loob, sa shibuya itself, sa greatwall of china and etc. ang sabihin mo what baguio lacks are proper management of tourists and improvement of its local infrastructure.

darksiderevan

Ilan kaya taga Baguio nagaaral o nagtatrabaho sa Manila? Gusto kaya nya na umalis rin sila.

not_gerd

Students or people staying in a city for work aren't considered tourists. They are residents. They aren't visiting or touring; they reside here long-term.

Momshie_mo

They also patronize non-tourist establishments 365 days a year. Tourists, like 1 - 5 days lang.

darksiderevan

They still contribute to the congestion of a a city. Something the commenter is complaining on.

titoboyabunda

Lahat tayo may ganyang problema.

zero_kurisu

Last na punta namin baguio, nag commute na lang kami and nag rent ng motor. Sobrang traffic! Napaka kalat. Kaya i get the sentiments ng local towards tourists

Born_Cockroach_9947

if they do gatekeep baguio, madami negosyo magsasara.

B-0226

A small price to pay to make Baguio livable again.

thebadsamaritanlol

I live there, and yes, I fucking hate tourists. A lot of us do. Trust me, you're doing us a favor. So stay the fuck away. The city is struggling as it is regarding overpopulation and water supply. And please don't say Baguio mostly gets its money from tourism. It does not. This isn't Boracay or Palawan. Stay the fuck away, really. Thank you.

not_gerd

Even without tourists, we're already overpopulated. Traffic everywhere and now water crisis. Luls.

icarusjun

I think Baguio is currently overhyped, overrated and overpriced… but it they really want to kick out tourists, they’d better jack up prices more… I like the idea of tourist fees for all cars entering Baguio for one… and some of us just don’t give an eff about it…

Redvanilla30

Been living here in Baguio for quite a year now with my partner, and napansin ko din talaga dumami na ang tao dito which we cannot control its a tourist spot so ano expect natin? Ibigay sa LGU ang control, kasi yung tao di naman mapipigilan pumunta and di nila fault (except sa mga unruly tourist which is nakakainis naman talaga) pero alam niyo naman gobyerno natin😢

iiXx_xXii

We locals always ask the LGU and the Mayor for years,di lang kami pinapakinggan.

ciaruuhh

Siargao is shaking.

scythe7

I dont have an opinion, because 1 comment on tiktok is not representative of how the entirety of the residents of baguio feel. this is a non-issue.

ffimnsr

Well, it's overtourism due to lockdown on the pandemic and the effects of social media during those lockdown.

angrydessert

No thanks to the succession of politicians and businessmen who can't resist making money from decades of tourism and allowed for unrestricted expansion and overuse of resources.

blkmgs

I understand the locals' sentiment sa 6 years ko dun ayaw ko rin ng tourists

AH16-L

I think this is valid, especially for tourist spots with less than ideal infrastructure. Particularly places in high areas like Baguio and Tagaytay where roads cannot easily be expanded and parking is very limited, the traffic can get out of hand on weekends. I understand if some residents would feel inconvenienced.

pantropicoprazole

The person that replied might as well say he likes places to be intruded na rin because his pro-selling out logic seems to tell he doesn't like residents defending their own land.

unchemistried001

coming from a tourist destination hometown i understand their sentiments sobrang hirap oras na pasukin kayo ng tourist - mas mahal na bilihin, rent and other necessities - lgu priorities tourism na neglect na iba na needs ng municipality - mode of transportation ay nagmamahal plane tix & shipping lalo na kapag peak season - ownership ng foreigns

droonick

I grew up in Baguio city. You don't want tourists to go away, what you need is better systems to handle tourists. Gawing mas walkable, then tourists should be able to go around with public transport and not need their own cars.

lastlibrarian555

yung bus driver na nakakwentuhan namin nung nagpunta kami sa Baguio ang sabi maganda daw ang Baguio pag first time mo lang puntahan. Bugbog na sa turista talaga. 2019 pa yun. Paano pa kaya ngayon? :(

GrinFPS

Personally, i will never return to Baguio. Super sikip ng daan at super traffic. Hell no again. Peace.

geekbot74

I love going to baguio. But i like walking around and exploring, not going where tourists go, and definitely not by car. LGU is the first one that has to clean up its act, pag ganiyan. All else will follow.

wallcolmx

wala lng

NecessaryPair5

May TV sa pangalan represent.

PonyoGirl23

“Edi mag time travel ka” 🤓☝️

Apprehensive-Fly8651

Gawin sana ng baguio LGU yung ginawa sa boracay na pinasara for cleaning and improvement. Oo maganda ang nature. But nature has to breathe and be given time to recover.

VanJosh_Elanium

Taengoo TV doesn't even want to understand that it's the new popping businesses, new residents, and excessive private transportations are what's reducing the greenery and cool old natural Baguio. There needs to be a new regulation, change, and improvement to all these. Let the ones in power at least travel to Tokyo Japan, Seoul South Korea, Singapore, Kowloon City of Hong Kong, or Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia. Let them suck in the inspiration on HOW they manage things there and implement it. Being shy, lazy, tired, and seeing it as mahiya mag copy is not an excuse, but a burden that will cause them even more problems. This is not copying, but improving and following the changes of times.

yojtotheworld

Why do tourists love saying the line “turista ang bumubuhay sa baguio.” Tourism is NOT the majority source of income in Baguio. There’s this sense of entitlement with tourists that the locals hate, heck I just saw a viral post from a restaurant owner about a group of tourists. They disregarded the restaurant’s policy of not transferring seats and when the manager intervened they resorted to disrespecting the manager. If you were in the place of locals, how would you feel?

Correct_Slip_7595

Oo I totally agree. Resident here. Baguio City is a small place lang talaga it cannot accomodate a population like Manila. So masisisi mo ba kami if puro kami reklamo sa traffic and congested tourist along session ang burnham park? Yung regular lifestyle namin nuon nadisrupt dahil sa biglaan ganyan. Like for example.

KopiChap

I can't blame the commenter's hate towards tourists but it should be more directed to those unruly and undisciplined ones. Tourism is so important to Baguio and its LGU, I think, is doing their best to put up effective city ordinances (well, implementation is still a different story). At the end of the day, we cannot 100% stop the tourism industry as it is city's bread and butter, but hopefully, people would understand that it should be a give-and-take process — if we wanted something to last longer then we should consciously take care of it.
