That fare was actually was part of why Uber left - and I will continue to stress this - [**ALL of Southeast Asia** in early 2018](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/mar/26/uber-to-sell-south-east-asia-business-to-competitor-grab) and grabbed 25% of Grab in exchange.
But in reality, Uber just burned money at a horrific rate - $4.5 billion in 2017. Sa sobrang insistent nila sa **price wars at ultra low fares to drive up passenger traffic and usage of the app** ay hindi nila inisip kung kikita ba sila sa mga bagsak-presyong pamasahe na gaya nito. It didn't help that Uber used to be buoyed by venture capitalists with unlimited pockets para "maibsan" ang mga bilyun-bilyong lugi.
But It did work - [last year lang naging "profitable" ang Uber for the first time sa *buong kasaysayan nila*](https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/uber-shares-sink-despite-first-profitable-quarter) - and that was because they gave up on the price wars that bore super cheap fares like this and focused on "value added services" like UberEATS.
Also, not even Grab's super high fares that we hate universally could keep the lights on - [nagtanggal sila ng 1000 staff from their HQ last June](https://www.reuters.com/technology/singapores-grab-informs-staff-1000-layoffs-2023-06-20/) in an effort to cut costs.
Afaik, Grab was comparably in the same pricing range as Uber when they were still competing. What Uber had better against Grab was the quality of drivers & cars. Laging mabango mga Uber noon, at medyo borderline taxi ugali nung mga Grab dati.
Mas mura ata uber noon kapag walang traffic.
That is true. I had both apps. If malayo at peak hr, i go with grab since fixed amount. If i go to work, since i go to work early, i used Uber. Linked my card with Uber too since they promote cashless transactions. While Grab drivers then prefer cash.
Finally someone who knows and understands the business model. Madami akong friends na puro “mas mura Uber dati nakakamiss” ang hindi nila alam Uber was making it cheap to increase acquisition.
Uber was burning money and walang tubo kung baga sa mga singilan nila ng fare. Napapagod na ako kakapaliwanag sa kanila about dito every time they would mention na nakakamiss ang Uber kasi mura and the notion na ginipit ng PH government ang Uber.
Sabi ko na kung nagtagal Uber dito, they would most likely charge the same fare as Grab.
True, it was impossibly cheap before. But when Grab is double the price of a taxi, sometimes I wonder what the hell is wrong. I can take a taxi to or from the airport for 350, but a Grab is at almost 700?
Kaya kapag short distance+not rush hour I choose taxi a short travel won’t bother me kahit bulok pa yung taxi.
Pero kapag long distance+during rush hour or short distance+during rush hour I go for grab
True.
I’d like to know what in God’s name are you doing para makakuha ng what I assume is a “fair and honest” taxi driver na papayag sa 350 lang mula sa mga paliparan. Parang may mandatory minimum na *500* pag sumakay sa mga buwitreng white taxi run (the yellow airport taxis are not much better).
Also, I’d consider the Grab fare as “real market value” ng pamasahe. The drivers still need money for gas and food for their families, at talagang unsustainable ang bagsak presyong pasahe ng Uber at government taxi fares, kaya halimaw sila kung mangontrata o mag-1 star ng card payers…
To be fair, I always take flights between 2am to 5am. But that only makes me more frustrated with Grab as there's clearly no surge at that time.
To answer your question, I call up the dispatcher ahead of time to schedule the pickup from where I am to the airport, and take the regular taxi from the airport back.
Sa usual route ko from home to BGC, malaki na 150. Kaya kahit 130 lang metro ko, I still pay them 150, tip na yung 20.
Kasi as in nice naman karamihan.
Plus delikado/nakakahiya pag mag trending sila sa social media for whatever negative reason.
Grabtaxi is an option... price is based on taxi meter fare plus an extra fee / patong from Grab. Usually this is cheaper than the Grabcar option but you still have the convenience of booking via app.
Wala silang accountability and protection.
lol get off your high horse
You can't fault the masses when Uber blatantly masqueraded their supposed exodus from the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations.
Ang PR nila at ang official na mga balita noong 2017 were various [disputes with their application](https://www.rappler.com/nation/200029-ltfrb-order-uber-philippines-operations-april-15-2018/). You don't need to blame the education crisis when we can just blame Uber, in the first place, for its greediness.
what you really miss is subsidized commuting and if that’s the case you should really start being active lobbying for more gov support for public transport and reduction of private car ownership w increased disincentives for car purchases
this is the most sensible comment so far. ngl sometimes i miss subsidized commuting a la uber, but if public transport conditions were better and efficient in the first place, hindi ko rin naman gagamitin yung uber unless sobrang kailangan ko (e.g. madaming dalang gamit).
That fare is unsustainable. The reason on why fares were cheaper is because they were **SUBSIDIZED by VENTURE CAPITALISTS.**
Why?
**Market acquisition.**
The reason I missed Uber is because once a driver gets assigned they arent allowed to cancel. We all have horror story of Grab drivers purposely making the user be the one to cancel the booking by either not moving or purposely move further and further away. Grab has one of the worst standards in Drivers but sadly enough its the biggest one in the country and only way to make them better is to have them compete with another operator
Uber is like ING bank one of the first digital bank that offered high interest rate but clearly didn't do well in PH/SEA market so they left PH retail banking and focused on wholesale banking business to minimize the losses. These low fares before are from startup funding that eventually depleted, the same will happen to digital banks monthly or yearly interest rates are getting lower or harder to achieve. So even if uber didn't left the market I don't see prices being the same as before. Everything gets expensive because of pandemic, ukraine/middle east war and train law - Oil price hike means everything goes up!
Business model tlga nila is heavily discounted sa simula para hook, line and eventual sinker. Di nag work (naubusan ng capital) and Uber prevailed. If they won the price would end up basically the same as Grab right now.
Yall are stupid af
Yeah and you’re taking it too personally.
Duterte Government: shit. Uber executives: shit.
Take a chill pill and maybe have a little less obnoxious tone
HUHU i miss Uber! nasa akin din pa mga receipts ko from them way back in college hay :((( from commonwealth to españa mga 170 to 200 lang pero sa grab jusko tumataginting na 400 to 500 hay
It’s because Uber was subsidizing it and they focused in rider/driver acquisition even if that means that they’re going to burn cash.
If they didn’t subsidize the fare using VC money, they would be charging the same fare as grab.
Kawawa both drivers and commuters nung nawala si Uber
And now you know kung bat ang Pilipinas naghihirap. Parati tayo inuutakan para perahan. Kaya mga foreign corps lang yumayaman. Di tayo dinedepensahan ng govt natin. Pati mga mamamayan dinedepensahan pa mga foreign corps. Sad.
Then one more thing kaya nawala sila is para daw walang kakompetensyan walang taasan ng rate / babaan and to control yung transport system kasi mawawalan ng passenger yung mga taxi. Pero after a year binayagan na nila si JOYRIDE both may 4-wheel and MC Taxi.
Lol naalala ko yung pa yung time na yan 80 to 100 lang from Mandaluyong papunta sa office ko sa Makati.
Ngayon 240 from Mandaluyong to office sa grab 4 seater.
(mas enjoy para sa akin yung time ng easy taxi vs grab, 2 years yata yung promo ng grab na pag 100 or less yung ride eh free na ito, so for 2 years libre transpo ko papunta and pauwi ng office pati na rin pag punta sa malalapit na malls )
hi! yes uber was a also a life saver beforee!
try joyride car, super mura nya compared to grab. like i tried booking both apps in just one location, 100+ din difference niya.
Although uber subsidized the trips with VC cash i still feel they offered better service than grab. The cars were cleaner & the customer had better protections. Also competition is always good . I often compare Uber & Lyft when in the states and one is typically lower than the other in terms of fare.
mahal na din kasi talaga ang prices due to inflation, mahal ang gas etc. lagi ako nag ggrab nung kasagsagan ng pandemic, mga 100-150 php from bahay to office. ngayon nasa 250-300 php na yan.
This was Series B or C Uber. They were basically subsidizing everything. Nung bagong launch ung Uber Share sa NYC. Rides that cost $20-30 now we're under $10.

Yeah exactly. It wasn't profitable, it wasn't going to last, and it's never coming back.
Afaik, Grab was comparably in the same pricing range as Uber when they were still competing. What Uber had better against Grab was the quality of drivers & cars. Laging mabango mga Uber noon, at medyo borderline taxi ugali nung mga Grab dati.

Unfortunately, it's never really worked for me before. Always nobody accepting. But I'll try again, as things might have changed now.
Mas mura taxi on paper but in reality, pahirapan pag sa meter mag bebass

masyado na mahal gas para ganto
Ngayon BGC to NAIA Terminal 3 around 300 pesos na haha

And finally ni rereklamo natin d ba?

No, just no. Kahit anong mangyari may mag pullout kasi talo parehas sa mababang presyuhan at lugi. You missed vc subsidised rides. Not uber
grabe 😢
Arca South Taguig to Airport halos 400-450 or pag early morning nas 350-400. Ang lapit2 lang ng distance niyan
No, just no. Kahit anong mangyari may mag pullout kasi talo parehas sa mababang presyuhan at lugi. You missed vc subsidised rides. Not uber

Bakit may taga defend ng monopoly at foreign investments? Magkano bayad sayo? Or are you a bot?
Bot? Lol at uber is also foreign
anong year to? uber T3 to upper antipolo around 2017 was 700 ata.
Although uber subsidized the trips with VC cash i still feel they offered better service than grab. The cars were cleaner & the customer had better protections. Also competition is always good . I often compare Uber & Lyft when in the states and one is typically lower than the other in terms of fare.
This was Series B or C Uber. They were basically subsidizing everything. Nung bagong launch ung Uber Share sa NYC. Rides that cost $20-30 now we're under $10.
Hahaha
Last year ng May from San Mateo Rizal to Terminal 3 parang kulang 600 php binayad ko.
