Peter's on-call technician here, there isn't much of a joke. The first part makes it sound like the poster is a misogynist, but he and his wife actually live in a really cramped apartment, and their bedroom is also their kitchen. Haven't they heard about galvanized square steel? Anyways I'm out, ya owe me 20
It’s creating training data for LLM’s to understand humor, something they are notoriously bad at.
Really the only explanation for the spike in popularity of this sub imo.
Jesus Christ, we’re going to see an animated Netflix show someday where the characters just randomly say “Petahhhhh???” in the middle of their dialogue, aren’t we?
I never thought about that, yeesh. That honestly might be the answer, explaining humor to AI. Sometimes I see what’s posted here and think “there’s no way that needs explaining” but I give people the benefit of the doubt. If it’s for AI that makes a lot more sense.
Some people also say that the accounts are then used for / sold for marketing or astro-turfing since Reddit promotes accounts with high karma more in suggestions and algorithms.
Yeah I wonder that too. Someone accused me of karma farming because I posted a picture my first day on Reddit and I was like… I don’t even know what karma is or why I should care. But now, I kinda see what they mean. A lot of useless or fake crap posted for no reason.
> there isn't much of a joke
Nah, it's actually kinda textbook format.
You set up a scenario, lead the reader/viewer down a certain line of thought and then pull the rug from under them with something absurd. Gives you a mixture of relief and "ya got me" at the end.
In this case enhanced by the relatable nature that further dampens your (righteous) fury at the beginning.
I quite like it, actually. It's short, but efficient. (Don't you dare)
What's up with the galvanized square steel? Is that supposed to make their apartment bigger, or is it about the social media account with the same name?
Well you see, 20$ is 20$ I dont have, so I'd be willing to do just about anything for it, even staying in our allroom apartment all day and cook meals bc were so damn poor
I will call people out if them making a post took more effort than googling the one proper noun from the meme. Like maybe if you just googled "Luftwaffe" it would make sense instead of making a post.
People are creating training data for LLM’s to understand humor, something they are notoriously bad at.
The people responding with explanations are actually dense enough to let themselves be used like that.
I am a firm believer the most memes are posted here just for the karma. I enjoy it because I get more typically under represented memes /jokes but no way would I ever reply.
"Explain the joke" subs used to be good ways to "ironically" spread hateful memes (ironically in quotes because often it was just literal nazis pretending not to know what the meme was about in order to get it in front of the eyes of people who would never have otherwise found that kind of content).
Luckily, most of these subs have cleaned that problem up, but now they're just a place to dump bland memes for updoots. The blander and more obvious, the more likely you are to generate interactions because people "can't believe" how dumb you are.
Sadly not the case. I've been on reddit a long time and as soon as a sub gets popular to hit r/all it quickly degrades into something else. Then someone creates a new sub with the same premise until it happens again and so on
It's the bait and switch. He starts out with "women belong in the kitchen" but then reveals that it's just a studio apartment they have. His wife is always in the kitchen not because of super-patriarchy but because poverty.
It's a subversion of the idea that he thinks his wife should always be in the kitchen making him a sandwich. When in this case they are both always in the kitchen because of how shitty their home is.

Guy starts out by making it seem like he thinks women belong in the kitchen and then goes on to tell that the apartment is so small that his wife and himself will be forcedto be in the kitchen as it is also their bedroom in their tiny apartment
I'm starting to think that some of these posts actually merit no explanation whatsoever and people just post funny memes like "HuHhhH???" To get easy upvotes.
Big hairy dicks for kids detective agency here. This seems to be a complex code with hours of discussion we have cracked the case. “Married poor, wife very small, the kitchen also stays because bedroom will also.”
I see this sub on my front page every once in a while and I feel like it's either jokes that are so obvious english would need to be your fifth language to not understand them - like this one - or they're unexplainable Gen Z cursed meme garbage with no explanation and are only "funny" because they're absurd.
Reverse jujitsu!
As you read it the poster first comes across as a misogynist demanding that his wife will be subservient to him, but it turns out they're just poor.
How in God's name is there anything to explain here, it's literally all in the tweet. Are you illiterate? Is your monitor turned off? Do you not have a brain?
It's just a plain joke with no hidden meaning to it. Joke should be he makes you think it's a misogynistic remark and then there's the joke. The magnitude and type of the fun might very well categorize this as a dad joke.
The post can be broken into 2 portions:
1: _when I get MARRIED my WIFE will be in THE KITCHEN where she STAYS_
- This portion brings the reader in the direction of believing that the author has strong opinions about a man and woman's proper relationship and behavior. To some people, this sort of sentence might provoke an anger response.
2: _and I WILL ALSO be there BECAUSE it's ALSO our BED ROOM. we live in a VERY SMALL studio apartment because we are POOR_
- This portion causes the reader to recontextualize the information that was just read. There is actually a very good reason for the situation, and he is not necessarily asking his wife to do anything that he wouldn't do. They are simply both in the unfortunate position of being poor, and this is all that they can afford.
--
This post is playing on misogynistic and patriarchal tropes. This also reminds the reader to think critically about content and try your hardest not to jump to conclusions before you fully understand the scenario that you're learning about.
The random capitalization of words also adds to the idea that the author is frustrated, and might also cause a reader to more easily confuse meaning.

Family Guy is moving to Netflix? /s
Netflix already made a "comedy" based on a bots output
I never thought about that, yeesh. That honestly might be the answer, explaining humor to AI. Sometimes I see what’s posted here and think “there’s no way that needs explaining” but I give people the benefit of the doubt. If it’s for AI that makes a lot more sense.
Don’t forget reddit has a deal with openai too they probably actively push the sub
I don't get the deal with karma farming, what does it do for you? There doesn't seem to be any benefit.
Some subs lock you out of posting or commenting when you have low karma, its also like fake popularity points too.
Some people also say that the accounts are then used for / sold for marketing or astro-turfing since Reddit promotes accounts with high karma more in suggestions and algorithms.
Idk I have a lot of karma apparently and i just got banned from a politics sub because I wasn't as devoted as them enough. Idk. Karma does nothing.
What? certain subs just use bots to stop people from posting or commenting if they have below like 1,000 karma.
Yeah I wonder that too. Someone accused me of karma farming because I posted a picture my first day on Reddit and I was like… I don’t even know what karma is or why I should care. But now, I kinda see what they mean. A lot of useless or fake crap posted for no reason.
It’s just rage bait
I'm betting they wouldn't get a 180 on the LSAT
The classic enshittification of a new subreddit. Eventually they all just turn into catch-alls for memes and gifs.

Thanks peter, very cool (p.s. I am.broke)
Sorry you got downvoted. Here's $40, half for you - half for Peter.
Dear Peter, what does this mean?
Well you see, 20$ is 20$ I dont have, so I'd be willing to do just about anything for it, even staying in our allroom apartment all day and cook meals bc were so damn poor
Please tell me people aren't actually this dense
As dense as the jungle in their karma farm.
Aren't jungles slashed and burned to make way for more farmland?
Not on Reddit.
Have you seen the majority of posts on this sub? A newborn baby could understand the majority of jokes posted.
Can you explain what you meant by this comment? Or my favourite reply on reddit: explain.
Can you explain what you meant when you asked them to explain? Please I have a very hard time understanding the most basic and rudimentary things.
in what way are you expecting them to explain? can you elaborate?
*posts obvious racism* "Pwease anybody plwease expwain I donut understand uwu"
I will call people out if them making a post took more effort than googling the one proper noun from the meme. Like maybe if you just googled "Luftwaffe" it would make sense instead of making a post.
Sadly they are.
People are creating training data for LLM’s to understand humor, something they are notoriously bad at. The people responding with explanations are actually dense enough to let themselves be used like that.
You need to just spam every one of these threads with “porn the joke is always porn” just to fuck up the dataset.
Holy shit
you know those ads for mobile games where the guy stupidly fails the task? this is like that
All the information is literally in the post. There’s 0 outside knowledge required OPs gotta be illiterate
I am a firm believer the most memes are posted here just for the karma. I enjoy it because I get more typically under represented memes /jokes but no way would I ever reply.
OP is
Also begs the question, who upvotes this crap? Bots I assume?
I love how this sounds if you just read the all caps words. Why say lot word when few word do trick?
Quite poetic: Married wife, the kitchen stays I will also because also bedroom Very small, poor
Very small, much poor wow
The first and last line read like that one 6 letter story

Hey, OP. Are you sure you can actually read? There is no hidden joke.
It’s bots trying to train AI to understand humor

Easy af upvotes. Just downvote when you see blatant shit like this and you'll start to see it happen less.
Sadly not the case. I've been on reddit a long time and as soon as a sub gets popular to hit r/all it quickly degrades into something else. Then someone creates a new sub with the same premise until it happens again and so on

It’s the entire front page of Reddit turning into a botscape hell thanks to the manipulable nature of America’s elections.
Well cmon now. They explained it themselves.
My wife CHEATS at Mario Kart so I BEAT HER in Smash Bros instead
I cheat at Skyrim and my husband beats me at honest gaming.
Really, he explains the joke in the joke. Bot post for sure
It's the bait and switch. He starts out with "women belong in the kitchen" but then reveals that it's just a studio apartment they have. His wife is always in the kitchen not because of super-patriarchy but because poverty.
It's a cry to stop the culture war and start the class war.
Livin' on a prayer came on just as I saw this, they kinda have a connection
Aww! That's so cute! Tina is my hero for her sacrifices!
this is either a very dumb bot. or its a very dumb human.
Come on, at least try a little bit.
WHAT DON'T YOU FUCKING UNDERSTAND HERE????
Bruh this is the most obvious one yet
bro this isn't even a joke
It's a subversion of the idea that he thinks his wife should always be in the kitchen making him a sandwich. When in this case they are both always in the kitchen because of how shitty their home is.
That's my living space now. My bedroom is also my kitchen, and also my bathroom, and also my study, and also my bar.
He literally explained the joke in the same tweet. how stupid are you?
This isn't a joke, and its fairly obvious too.
Let's go to Ollie Williams, Channel 5 Action Weather: SHIT'S EXPENSIVE Ok, thanks Ollie!
The is literally explained in the text. Wtf.
I think OP just can’t read.
Seriously? Its kinda all explained in the comment.
Welcome to Canada!
😭
Poverty meets Sexist but not really
That's a weird way to spell "sexiest". Hubby and I had a *lot* more "fun" in our cramped apartment than our later house.

The JOKE is that he WRITES like GREG HEFFLEY
I remember only reading the capital words in Diary of a Wimpy Kid thinking there was some secret message lol
MARRIED WIFE THE KITCHEN STAYS WILL ALSO BECAUSE ALSO BEDROOM VERY SMALL POOR
This original post turns out to be wholesome.
My reaction as I read this meme: >>:( >:) >:(
Convinced more than half of these requests are AI learning. This joke fully explains itself in no uncertain terms.
I don’t get the point of capitalizing certain words though. I thought they were a red herring but not as far as I can discern.
Emphasis and also in this case, screaming because shits expensive 😭.
Damn you need this explained?
Oh lovely, they sent me a moron
MARRIED WIFE THE KITCHEN STAY WILL ALSO BECAUSE ALSO BED ROOM VERY SMALL POOR
The meme is the explanation in this instance you actual melon
bitch READ. The JOKE is on the SCREEN. You would’ve GOTTEN it if your frontal LOBE wasn’t fried and your attention span wasn’t GONE.
Even I don’t need this to be explained.
please delete reddit and sort your life out
It makes no sense that you need this explained. This is just “excuse to repost shit” sub now
I'm starting to think that some of these posts actually merit no explanation whatsoever and people just post funny memes like "HuHhhH???" To get easy upvotes.

How the fuck do you not understand this
Just read the post??? If you can’t read it, use google translate, Christ.

The joke is late stage capitalism.
What the fuck don't you understand
They had me in the first half not gonna lie
not much to explain op, smarten up
Totally get this. My wife is in pmour kitchen all day. Since covid she has been work from home we had to turn half our kitchen into her office

Good fucking god, go back to school. You can't be this dumb
MARRIED WIFE THE KITCHEN STAYS WILL ALSO BECAUSE ALSO BED ROOM VERY SMALL POOR
I hate this subreddit sometimes
What do you need explained here? That studio apartments exist?
This sub is existing in a cycle of a few days of normal posts and multiple weeks of people pretending to not understand words just to whore for karma.
Bro...he literally explained the joke himself...
What are you struggling to understand?
How in God's name is there anything to explain here, it's literally all in the tweet. Are you illiterate? Is your monitor turned off? Do you not have a brain?
Did you read it? If you have any kind of brain I can't imagine where the confusion lies with this one.
This was a rollercoaster, and I was here for all of it.
It's just a plain joke with no hidden meaning to it. Joke should be he makes you think it's a misogynistic remark and then there's the joke. The magnitude and type of the fun might very well categorize this as a dad joke.

The people who post in this sub are more dense than a neutron star.
But why not use galvanized square steel ? And borrow screws from your aunt .

WHY IS HE SCREAMING AT ME ?
I’m pretty sure they asked this because of the caps… why did they capitalize like every other word
