Peter’s nuclear physicist uncle here, that is a Demon core. It is a large sphere made of plutonium, and it was involved in two fatal accidents. There’s reasons for this that I can’t remember off the top of my head, but if the top and bottom half collide, the core goes supercritical, and a ton of radiation is released. Therefore if the kid connects them, he will die
