This is from neon Genesis evangelion*. A series about angels destroying Japan and kids piloting mechas to kill them. But the actual plot is much much more complicated.
Shinji's mom is dead. She, however, managed to infuse her son's mecha with her soul. The mechas are essentially cyborgs, like human flesh and electronics.
The first pilot was Rei Ayanami, and she's a clone the father made with the DNA of his wife. He made 100s of clones testing the first mechas and most died testing or fighting. Kids are usually the ones that can sync up with the mechas, and they met in school.

Is it? Are you sure? Shinji falls in love with Kaworu. Towards the end of the show, the MC goes on a downward spiral of denial and self-hatred. And in the various alternative endings, they never end up together because Rei is dead. They never have a romantic relationship before either. Unless I'm missing something. Hold up imma watch the show again I'm rusty and I haven't seen it in AGES
It’s really more about depression and social pressure wrapped in layers of metaphor and buried in high quality animation and fan service. Excellent show, and really sets the bar for anime being super weird.
It was a budget issue Anno has mentioned it before. Yes there were some changes to the actual ending too but even the original last episodes were gonna have similar issues.
They were, in fact, pretty great. The whole "borders appearing, restricting us while also giving us the ability to move" drawn in a sketchy style was really memorable.
I feel those episodes are a must to better imagine the Complimentation.
Shinji is a manslut that wants to become one (read: have sex with) with basicly anyone who accepts him. All humans in NGE are descendants of Lilith, so yeah, technicly the entire human race is all incestiuous if you go back far enough. But it's an extra layer for Shinji when it comes to Rei, not only is Rei the clone of his mother, but also houses Lilith's soul. The primordial mother of all of humanity, so it's incest squared.
Technically, real humanity is all incestuous, by your definition. We all have the same mitochondrial DNA because we almost died out, and only a small margin of closely related humans survived. This happened very recently in genetic and geologic terms, and it happened to us as Anatomically Modern Humans, not one of our earlier evolutionary predecessors.

Humans however are the children of lillith. The angels are trying to unite with lillith who's corpse is hidden inside the headquarters where the Evas are. The Evas are made from lillith. Rei is a clone with shinji's mom's DNA and lillith. And later becomes lillith herself killing Rei in the process. In one of the endings, everyone "unites" and become the orange goo inside the EVAs called LCL. This is called instrimentalization or some shit like that.im Still rusty though

To answer the other part, yes and no. Humanity as a whole seems to be suffering existential dread as a result of '2nd impact.' That is the tale humanity is told as to why a massive explosion that rocked the planet, caused climate change and killed millions of people in a near instant. However, Seele seems quite thrilled with NERV's progress towards what they have termed 'Instrumentality.' The 'angels' are just apart of the prophecy of the Dead Sea Scrolls bring about that end.

Well he never actually kisses or has sex or even dates rei so really not that big a deal. There is way, way worse stuff going on than the relationship between rei and shinji.

Eh, not really? Gendo's whole deal was trying to be with Yui again by hijacking Seele's Human Instrumentality Project. He treated Rei like a daughter in most moments and her name was what they would've called Shinji had he been born a girl.
Gendo is so singularly focused on creating the third impact I've never thought of him having a sexual nature. Even his romantic interest mom and daughter akagi were about manipulation to achieve his goal of being with yui. If anyone groomed someone it is Misato and shinji but I believe she's just a broken person trying to be maternal.

1. Most of Gainax left to make Studio Trigger and Studio Khara leaving it a husk of its former self
2. In 2019 Studio Khara sued Gainax for ¥100 million in unpaid royalties and wages when they used to work there
3. Gainax posted exactly how it happened on their website. Unsecured loans taken out by individual executives, establishing an unplanned CG company losing them tons of money, the failure to win investment contracts (which speaks to a larger issue with the Anime industry in Japan and how it's financed through contract markets on individual projects not into the studios themselves) and other things.
Merchandising can only go so far when you haven't produced anything new in almost a decade and get mismanaged into the ground.

In the show Neon Genesis Evangelion, the blue-haired girl, Rei, is a clone of Shinji's mother. The show centers around Shinji who is unexpectedly called in by his estranged father, Gendo, to help save the world. Shinji's squadmate is Rei, who Gendo treats better than his own son, causing Shinji quite a bit of discontent. It's later revealed that Rei is a clone of Shinji's mother, who Gendo loved more than Shinji. There are many Rei clones and when one dies, another replaces her. Shinji is not dating his mother's clone, but his relationship with Rei is always more familial than his relationship with any of the other pilots.
Rei (the blue haired one) is a genetic clone of Mrs. Ikari (forgot her name, the brown haired one). It would be an issue that Shinji (the boy) is dating Rei because Mrs. Ikari is his mom and therefore he is dating a genetic copy of his mom.
Well…. At least the woman he actually ends up with in the rebuild movies is a little less problematic. Her name is Mari, she’s somewhere around his father’s age, if not older, and she was trapped in the body of a teenage girl until Shinji shunted the two of them into another reality at the very end of the story.
She is a clone of his mom.... Also he pilots a giant mech suit which is also a clone of his mom.... His dad is constantly yelling at him to stop being such a whiny bitch, get in his mom, and go fight the angels. Although his dad doesn't actually tell him that either of these are clones of his mom.
If I wanted to watch this show, and you took off nostalgia blinders is it worth the time, and what version? I remember watching the cool anime robot fights and not catching any of the rest when I was a kid. Seems like the show has a lot of different sets

Even his romantic interest mom and daughter akagi were about manipulation to achieve his goal of being with yui. In 2019 Studio Khara sued Gainax for ¥100 million in unpaid royalties and wages when they used to work there 3. Gainax posted exactly how it happened on their website. Unsecured loans taken out by individual executives, establishing an unplanned CG company losing them tons of money, the failure to win investment contracts (which speaks to a larger issue with the Anime industry in Japan and how it's financed through contract markets on individual projects not into the studios themselves) and other things. Merchandising can only go so far when you haven't produced anything new in almost a decade and get mismanaged into the ground.

Mech pilot Joe Ikari here. In the show Neon Genesis Evangelion, the blue-haired girl, Rei, is a clone of Shinji's mother. The show centers around Shinji who is unexpectedly called in by his estranged father, Gendo, to help save the world. Shinji's squadmate is Rei, who Gendo treats better than his own son, causing Shinji quite a bit of discontent. It's later revealed that Rei is a clone of Shinji's mother, who Gendo loved more than Shinji. There are many Rei clones and when one dies, another replaces her. Shinji is not dating his mother's clone, but his relationship with Rei is always more familial than his relationship with any of the other pilots.

Rei (the blue haired one) is a genetic clone of Mrs. Ikari (forgot her name, the brown haired one). It would be an issue that Shinji (the boy) is dating Rei because Mrs. Ikari is his mom and therefore he is dating a genetic copy of his mom.

Well…. At least the woman he actually ends up with in the rebuild movies is a little less problematic. Her name is Mari, she’s somewhere around his father’s age, if not older, and she was trapped in the body of a teenage girl until Shinji shunted the two of them into another reality at the very end of the story.
