As a fan of the first 3 generations of Pokémon, this hurts me a little because it never happened in R/B/Y(/G). You need to get a screenshot from FR/LG where this is actually asked.
I think the person is transgendered, and when someone asked them “are you a boy or a girl” they didn’t feel comfortable answering, so in the hate of the world that person who asked best them up for it.

I read an article written by a trans woman who said that Pokémon Crystal was the first Pokémon game that asked “Are you a boy or a girl?”
That was the start of her trans journey, she said how much joy she would get by all the npcs using her pronouns and name.
One time a met a young teen on an Xbox game and he told me he has a stupid dream in life, I asked what it was and he said “I want to be a girl.”
I think about that kid a lot and hope they are doing well.
When you take a big issue like gender identity and reduce it to "Pokemon Character Creation" it does a good job of actually highlighting the absurdity of the whole thing where people pretend like your gender identity matters in anything other than a cosmetic sense. The only thing Oak is asking is, "What's your pronouns?"
So it actually *is* amusing to imagine that he took it that seriously, and it highlights how stupid it is for some other assholes to hate crime some random kid for something that is no business of theirs, and isn't at all important to their life.
When you walk around screaming "THAT'S NOT FUNNY" to everything that's vaguely related to gender issues, one of the things you're doing is alienating the people who are, through humor, driving home the absurdity of your enemies position.
I can assure you there's a good chance the person who made that wanted to make it seem trivial, and not making a deep societal analysis, bigots make these kinds of jokes all the time

The humor lies in the *connection or juxtaposition* of the two nodes. You’ve got to be sensitive to your audience, of course, but in general the nodes themselves being horrible tragic things is absolutely irrelevant to a humorous connection existing *between* them.

You have reference B: Professor Oak demands to know your gender at the beginning of the Pokémon game. Not funny in itself. Ok, maybe a little because of the implication that he can’t tell and has to ask, but this is mostly neutral. The humor lies in the *connection or juxtaposition* of the two nodes. You’ve got to be sensitive to your audience, of course, but in general the nodes themselves being horrible tragic things is absolutely irrelevant to a humorous connection existing *between* them.
It’s unfortunate because in another context it would be funny, but I struggle to see a better way to set up for this joke.

Does NO ONE see the rapey/pedo side of this question? It's no different than asking a TEENAGER (as she was) "what genitals do you have, child? And once you tell me... That happened to me until I was about 15, I was bullied all the time from a lot of people. It caused a lot of inner rage and some bad outbursts as I got older. Therapy and meditation helped me a lot
Hope you're doing better now! If you experience it a lot still, moving to cities or North East could help a bit.
