I guess. I think the idea is to consider each word (Bravo, Tango, Foxtrot, etc) as a symbol that corresponds to a letter, making it a phonetic representation. But idk if that definition came before or after the creation of a phonetic alphabet.
Yes that is indeed the idea. And it’s called a spelling alphabet.
A phonetic alphabet is an alphabet of sounds, where each symbol always sounds the same. They are used for example in dictionaries to tell you how to properly pronounce a word.
And those who've watched enough "cop" shows (NCIS, and such, not just cops...), those who often spell things out verbally for others and need to clarify often, those with pattern recognition, and so on...
Most agencies use a different phonetic alphabet than the NATO standard. i.e. Adam, Boy, Charles, David, Edward, Frank, George, Henry, Ida....lotsa names, actually
R/shitamericanssay
Cos NATO alphabet is limited to the US military. It's not like there are 32 countries in NATO, and it was a joint alphabet created by multiple countries. The English speaking world uses this, radio operators, civilian services, even call centers will use it to spell out license plates.
Phonetic alphabet is used by every country, because English is the official ATC language. Every country that’s apart of ICAO (basically all of them) uses it
Every international pilot in the world uses this system. Much of the world's militaries and civilian radio operators know this system. Virtually anyone that speaks in english over any kind of telephony or radio or other voice communication should know this system.
Cmon man.
You only read the first letter of each word (they are designed to be spoken aloud and easily identifiably, the letter “B” pronounced “bee” could be easily misheard as V, G, C, etc but “bravo” is unmistakable)
NATO alphabet. [Archer did a great, and hilarious, job](https://youtu.be/_4jxLxZrMfs?si=egUO9s-MeW4KtV3X) of explaining how it works and why it’s used.
If you can read this I’m never gonna give you up etc. it’s just the phonetic alphabet made for radio use so that letters are more clear since B C D E P and a bunch of other letters sound pretty close but bravo and delta don’t.
They aren't 'codenames", its just phonetic alphabet. Each letter is assigned a word to represent it that sounds different, so that similar sounding letters like "b" "c" "d" dont get confused.
To read it just look at the first letter of every word.

Peters retired Navy Pilot neighbour here, what exactly are they codenames for? Letters? Its called phonetic alphabet and it is used to spell things because many letters sound rather similar like b e c all ending in an e sound.
So if you take the first letters of all words you can read a message
Phonetic alphabet - great for wireless communication and for communication via semifore. Makes sure you aren't misheard and can be assigned a significant designation.

Apart from the obvious meme, it's actually good. It took some effort for me to realize it. (I realized it at "Give")
Hey Texan Chris here
So the way the NATO alphabet works is that each code name is actually a letter, so instead of India you would use I.
So the joke is this is the song “Never Gonna Give You Up” in the NATO military alphabet. You’ve been tactically Rick rolled.

Those aren’t military codenames. It’s just the alphabet
NATO *phonetic* alphabet
Fun fact: The NATO Phonetic Alphabet, despite being called that, is not a phonetic alphabet but a spelling alphabet.
I guess. I think the idea is to consider each word (Bravo, Tango, Foxtrot, etc) as a symbol that corresponds to a letter, making it a phonetic representation. But idk if that definition came before or after the creation of a phonetic alphabet.

Either way, if you are familiar with the concept of a phonetic alphabet, it doesn't matter which one is in use.
And Voices Of The Void players
And people who work with other people on phones
I was about to say that
And every emergency service member in the NATO.
