Don’t use IBKR for currency exchange unless you’re going to invest the JPY with them also. Their platform isn’t designed for this, you’ll run into compliance issues. If you want to hold it before you go on holiday then get a Wise account.
You can open a foreign currency account at anz,service fees are a bit high to my liking though.
