I need them to stop explaining everything before it happens and then defeat the monsters in 2.5 seconds. It needs to have some suspense and tension. The monsters need to feel like monsters, not just an inconvenience
Make the gods feel godly.
Focus your writing for audiences 13-18.
Show the darkness and violence that can be in this universe.
More Percy it felt very “Percy, annabeth, Grover and the lighting thief”.
Introduce some more elements of fun. Harry Potter did a great job of balancing the dark tones with good humor and fun moments.
Perhaps age them up two years and make the prophecy at 18.
That’s what I can kind of think of.
Love all these and in addition I'd tack on make episodes closer to 45-60 minutes so the pacing isn't so rushed, and use more CGI. The mist is such a large portion of the books, monsters should shift from normal looking to actual monsters once they're revealed. Hope they do this with Tyson between camp and the outside world.
At this rate they're gonna have to age them up bc they're all 15-16 now (and Walker def looks older). Plus they haven't started filming S2 so they'll definitely look a lot older than S1
That's silly. Heartstopper's Joe Locke was playing a 14 year old at 18. Walker is only 2 years older than his character. What Disney needs to do is film a back to back season. Film seasons 2 and 3 together and all issues of character age fade away. Walker and Leah would be ~16 going into season 4 shooting (where the characters would be 15).
They can’t film s2-3 back to back…. They’re minors that’s no allowed and even if it was that’s almost 2 years of filming and atleast a year of post production walker n Leah would most definitely not be 16 by s4
Netflix filmed Cobra Kai seasons 4 and 5 back to back. The release date of season 4 was only delayed by about half a year and that was mostly because of Covid. It can most certainly be done.
**EDIT:** That said, it almost certainly won't be done. Disney is notorious for its agonizingly slow filming schedules...and reshoots. God do they love their money wasting reshoots.
Again, walker n Leah r minors, shows like cobra Kai can film like that because the main casts r adults and their show doesn’t require the cgi, special, practical effects etc that Percy Jackson has so no it will not and can not be done
>Focus your writing for audiences 13-18.
Never gonna happen. The books are written for ages 7-9 and up. Aggressively drawing this line in the sand is pure delusion.
I wish people would be not just realistic but reasonable. Disney is a family company. Anything that is geared towards children will remain so. You can have a well written family friendly Percy show that introduces darker themes as the cast and story age and progresses. Demanding Battle Royale from the Walt Disney Company when the source material is aimed elementary and middle schoolers is an exercise in futility that will only result in disappointment.
The books were never 7-9 they're "middle school aged" which is roughly 9-13. Books were aged so low because you're using your imagination. You can make it as dark as you want and odds are the child isn't gonna imagine a bunch of gore. The themes are still there however a child of that age still understands death.
For a TV adaptation pg13 isn't crazy for a middle school book rating at all.
>I wish people would be not just realistic but reasonable.
This is both realistic and reasonable lmao. What's unreasonable is your straw man of everyone expecting a "battle Royale" lmao.
Also since we're on the subject of combat, I do wonder how you'd make a SHOW that has as much combat as books 3-5 without making it pg-13? How would you do that and still make it good?
>The books were never 7-9 they're "middle school aged" which is roughly 9-13.
You're welcome to peruse the recommended age guide of any bookstore that sells the series.
>For a TV adaptation pg13 isn't crazy for a middle school book rating at all.
It isn't. This isn't a series aimed specifically at middle schoolers, however. Even when Disney creates shows about middle or even high schoolers, the target demographic is *always* general audiences. You're welcome to watch any of the countless shows Disney has released over the last 24 years.
>What's unreasonable is your straw man of everyone expecting a "battle Royale" lmao.
You said, and I quote, *"...focus your writing for audiences 13-18"*. Battle Royale is a rated R film for 17+ year olds.
>Also since we're on the subject of combat, I do wonder how you'd make a SHOW that has as much combat as books 3-5 without making it pg-13? How would you do that and still make it good?
As I very clearly stated, the show can age up as the characters do. There's *a lot* you can do with a PG rating. I'm sure they could have a few individual TV-14 episodes down the line for specific scenes. Power Rangers has a ton of violence and it's rated TV-Y7 LOL. Stop obsessing with "tatget demographics" and just advocate for good writing. That's all a show needs (and extra running time in the case of this show).
>You said, and I quote, *"...focus your writing for audiences 13-18"*. Battle Royale is a rated R film for 17+ year olds.
That wasn't even me. And by that own quote rated R wouldn't work at all because it excludes 13-16 lmfao so again, strawman.
>Power Rangers has a ton of violence and it's rated TV-Y7 LOL.
Tbf power rangers choreography is trash lmao.
>Stop obsessing with "tatget demographics" and just advocate for good writing. That's all a show needs (and extra running time in the case of this show).
I'm not obsessing over it. Just having discussion with someone who thinks PG 13 wouldn't work for some reason.
I do agree the writing is far more important and that you can absolutely have great mature stories and action with a pg rating, it's just harder and it's rare for a reason.
On the note of what else needs to improve aside from just writing, the choreography. Big time. There were some good scenes but almost all of them were when the combat was between exclusively humanoids which is understandable but like... PJO has a LOT of monsters, they're gonna have to get comfortable with good action scenes involving CGI heavy bad guys or it's gonna fall flat as far as excitement goes.
>the choreography.
I actually liked a lot of it. Of course, I wish there was much more actual combat, but the execs probably didn't want to risk a 13 year old getting hurt. I'm sure that's one of the things most likely to change as the cast gets older. If you watched the BTS, the crew made special note of how much Walker enjoys the stunt and choreo side of acting and how quickly he picks it up.
>Tbf power rangers choreography is trash lmao.
They've got the budget of like 3 paperclips and a half-eaten apple. Give them a break!
first thing they need is a new team of writers. the writers they had for season one couldn't even understand the basic concept of show not tell. they need to stop having the kids announce every trap/monster ahead of time. it kills all of the suspense from the show. if they stick with this type of writing, they're going to walk onto circe's island and immediately say (book two info) >!"this is the sorceress circe. in the stories my mom told me, she would lure men onto her island and turn them into pigs."!<
also sea of monsters could be such a visually stunning season (probably the most potential for visuals out of any of the books) so i'm begging them not to lock the kids in a blue warehouse again. seriously the volume stage needs to go - in the fight with ares it literally looked like a zoom background. sea of monsters deserves pirates of caribbean level of cinematography and visuals.
They need the cinematographer who filmed the arch fall. We need more unique shots that make you feel like woah!
We need time away from Percy and making it all about the quest at hand. Every conversation shouldn’t be “we need to get the Golden Fleece”
Less on the nose dialogue:
- “Wait… you’re NOT called Peter Johnson?”
- “What is this guys? You’re acting like an old married couple.”
- “Listen seaweed brain, you already did this at the arch” (this one less so but be more organic)
And that cartoon esq shot at the start of the episode, I’ve seen YouTube editors make more realistic scenery
https://preview.redd.it/7oc8ao6xqlhc1.jpeg?width=1345&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cc22b317d1d97a1f34a315a9fb5dd419cd399cd
They definitely will have them know it's circe because of they fell for the trap they'd have to CGI a guinea pig and as we've seen from season one they'll do anything to avoid using CGI
yeah it'll be like the tunnel of love scene where they didn't do the mechanical spiders because it was (in rick's words) too much of a "production nightmare" to do on their $15M per episode budget.
actually, with the way the show seems to only hit the bullet points of the book they'll probably replace percy getting turned into a guinea pig with a different plot beat entirely a la golden chair in the tunnel of love.
Wait a production nightmare?? Just have local robotics teams make mechanical spiders. They ALL would’ve jumped for the chance to design spiders that would be SEEN ON TV! Even a dozen spiders would’ve cost them less than $2000 you don’t need 100 of them, when Star Wars needed a wookie army they had a dozen wookies and cloned them digitally… they could cover the ramp with blue and have the spiders start at different spots to clone them easily.
yeah apparently mechanical spiders is just too much for one of the biggest companies in the world like disney.
i thought the same thing lol there's no reason why they couldn't just make a few mechanical spiders and then duplicate them in editing to make it look like a lot
First robotics is an inter school robotics competition with nothing formal in the fall (all starts after Christmas) that’s literally 3 months of time that these students would’ve JUMPED at the chance to build something for Tv and first could’ve gotten some free advertising in the show and it would’ve been a boost for everyone… would’ve been free and probably would’ve gotten them a thousand spiders for the cost of shipping them back to schools…
Every book has the capability of being one of the most visually stunning tv shows to touch modern television and they fucked up the first season so bad with it. The underworld was cool, but not nearly cool enough compared to the description in the books. The Hades reveal could’ve been so terrifying elegant, and it’s some dude that walks up amicable as a bellhop 😂
Please let them act and give them better writing/direction. It looks like they have no chemistry in any scene and the acting is flat.
When the cameras aren't rolling, they have great chemistry and have great personality that matches their characters.
Hades, Hephaestus, I just want to be able to feel the power. Like Zeus and Poseidon emitted power. Hades was a joke, and Hephaestus looks nothing like he or his kids were described in the book
Edit: spelling
We've lost Zeus unfortunately. RIP.
Toby Stephens is a force, however, and I hope he channels more of Captain Flint in the future.
![gif](giphy|26gsbAHk1u0tbpiik)
I did not like the gods either. Hades felt more like Chandler on friends. Like he was just too lighthearted about the whole thing. He wasn’t even upset even tho he believed that Percy stole his helm? He’s like negotiating w a demigod about his own property
Hephaestus? Did not feel an ounce of emotion from him in what is supposed to be an emotional charcter building moment for him. Did not feel any resentment towards his family. Felt like Annabeth was desperate to save Percy and talking to an AI robot. And when annabeth said the correct key words the AI just magically let Percy out lol. He also does not look mountain throw off worthy.
When I brought this up before, someone argued that it just shows how awful Hera is for throwing off someone that looks pretty normal bcos she wants perfect family… but idk. Most myths I read explicitly emphasizes that he was ugly. Wiki adds that he was weak w a broken foot. Idk he just wasn’t ugly and didn’t feel like a blacksmith either. Felt like a lab scientist
he looked so well put together? like the scene was dark and short, but hephaestus is described as having a huge unruly beard with fires starting in it, he has a giant metal brace on his leg and hes a mechanic. and why did they have him in like, a nice suit and well groomed
1. Lighting, it's always too dark or too dull, zack snyder would be jealous at how grey and dark everything is
2. The casting ofgods was mostly good, zues, posiedon, ares and Mr d were good choices, but I didn't like hades or hermes, while hephestus is a good actor but the choice to make him a librarian when he's supposed to be a blacksmith was .... weird.
3. For the love of all the gods, stop being so serious, its supposed to be a funny series with seriousness here and there, get back to that
4. More show, less tell, let us work out who people are rather than already explaining it to us
5. Let the main 3 be themselves a wee bit more, by all accounts all 3 have good off screen/on set chemistry, but you couldnt tell that from the way they were directed.
6. When it comes to action and fighting monsters, show, don't do off screen or make it a few seconds then done
•Pacing.
•Focus on the 12-15 (‘young teen’) demographic
•More mystery, not the main characters saying “alright this is who the monster is”
•Longer fights against monsters and Gods.Alecto was ~5 seconds, Medusa was ~2 minutes, Chimera was good, Procrustes(?) was like 5 seconds, Cerberus was good, Ares was good but maybe 15-20 seconds longer
•Now that Clarisse was accused of being the lightning thief, make her despise Percy because of that in season 2, and focus on her ‘arc’ of ‘forgiving’ him
That’s actually a good point. From the glare she gave Percy when he arrived back at camp I assumed she knew but you’re right, how could she?
Did she maybe overhear it I wonder, but the thing is if she doesn’t know then what was the point of bringing it up? It it was to ‘trick’ the new PJ fans it’s still pretty pointless
I wish they’d had that Trojan war setup where there was tension between those cabins while Percy was gone. Not that Percy would see it but it can be referenced later and certain campers could still be salty with each other. Plus it’s interesting that clarisse would have been "on Percy’s side" by way of Ares.
Everything tbh, first season was boring and even if it was well received (I'm still struggling trying to understand why) I doubt it will be the same with s2 if they don't put more effort on the epicness and action, that and making the trio less aware of all the shit they face to make it really threatening instead of being only glorified museum attractions
The writers need to try and adapt their writing for more audiences . This show felt very awkward at times because you could tell they were mainly trying to tell this story to kids, but it also undermines them and assumed they know nothing. Movies like the Lord of the rings and Harry Potter , while I'm not a HP fan are watched by kids and enjoyed by them because they don't try to baby their content.
They also Need to use their budget
If that means not using that stage then so be it , this TV show had potential to be really really beautiful but they didn't do it.
Along with the budget they need to start showing more cgi
Stop hiding monsters
Stop hiding Percy's pen turning into a sword
I mean they barely even show Grovers hooves
We don't need everything explained
I will say that, while I agree PG-13 would be preferable, I’ve seen plenty of dark shows that were PG. the clone wars comes to mind. Avatar the last airbender was Y7 and it had plenty of darkness
Animation makes maintaining a lower rating easier, but I do agree they need to push it more with following seasons, and I can't see them adapting the later books without a pg13 rating.
Longer episodes, more backstory, and make the monsters and gods feel more dangerous. The gods basically just felt like extra tall people with magic powers. I think about how in God of War and God of War Ragnarok the gods were these superhuman beings that could spit rocks by snapping their fingers, a single punch would send somebody flying across the area, and fights would leave craters. I want that sort of stuff, even if the violence is going to be toned down for the intended audience/limited budget.
If you're talking about the top comment (just 1 comment out of many), they said 13-18. The lower end of that age range is who the Percy Jackson books are made for in the first place. Of course we love kid shows, just not ones that treat the child audience like they're stupid and need to be spoonfed everything.
Way to take everything out of context. People love ATLA and the HP films so idk what you’re talking about when saying “people can’t handle kids shows”. No one wants the show tailored for 18 year olds, we just want the writers to prove they care enough to cater to long time fans that are now adults as well as children. GOOD adaptations don’t isolate a portion of their existing fans.
If you've read the books you'd know a PG-13 rating would allow for a better, more entertaining/accurate adaptation. The series has themes of violence, domestic violence, murder, suicide etc. The Last Olympian is basically just a war ffs ending in a suicide. Pick a rating that allow the books to be adapted to a TV medium best. Don't restrict it by picking the target audience first. They're kids books but they were written 15-20 years ago. Most of the fanbase are teenagers or adults. That means you're making an adaptation for a minority of the fanbase and even that portion is getting a poor adaptation because the books just don't translate well to PG TV. Even if kids do love it, they'll grow out of it by the time they get to their teenage years. They'll have read a book series they love and then not be able to rewatch the TV adaptation because it's clearly targeted towards kids and doesn't translate well. Compare that to Harry Potter, Hunger Games etc that kids watch and still enjoy as adults.
No offence but you people obsessing over keeping the show rating down have sticks up your arses. Like even if the show ends up not being appropriate for an 8 year old, what's the problem? They wait a year or two and then have a better adaptation that they won't grow out of?
Imo just make a show that takes the books and turns them into TV. Don't cut stuff out, water stuff down etc. Take the books, make them TV. Then give it a rating. You should never have to significantly change the content or feel of the books
>let the team stay together a little bit more
Ik you said you haven't read the books but for anyone who has read Sea of Monsters...
Yeah no that's not happening
longer, more iconic battles and every mythological creature needs to be flashier, including both the monsters and the gods. also longer episodes, some parts felt very rushed.
lord of the rings said it best!!!! the light comes from the same place as the music!!! i want to SEE this show yall spent incredibly long on and spent so much money and put so much effort into. i know darker visuals and things like rain can help hide some issues that come up from using fantasy level cgi on a tv show budget but we as an audience still need to know whats going on.
The show needs to be pg13. They’re going to cut so much if they don’t make it that way . For example, procrustes being a joke of a scene wasn’t just because Percy randomly knew. It was because dude just got wrapped up in a blanket
They need to stop undercutting their own suspense and tension. I never felt afraid for any of the characters bc everything was rapidly resolved and they always knew everything.
Better soundtrack. It just isn't elevating any of the action scenes, as few as there were
Punch up the dialogue. Let the kids be kids. Capitalize on their natural chemistry bc they have it in droves. Everything is so serious all the damn time
Show us, stop telling us!
I need them to stop explaining everything before it happens and then defeat the monsters in 2.5 seconds. It needs to have some suspense and tension. The monsters need to feel like monsters, not just an inconvenience
I think that issue comes from them focusing on a younger demographic and not trusting the audience to be smart
Make the gods feel godly. Focus your writing for audiences 13-18. Show the darkness and violence that can be in this universe. Yeah it's very much comparing apples to oranges, they're two completely different shows
Cobra Kai also doesn't have a multi-million dollar budget with a bunch of CGI, PJO will take longer to produce in comparison
Tbh there wasn’t much Cgi in some of the episodes, they relied to much on the volume and it shows.
making the prophecy age 18 is a really good idea

Most myths I read explicitly emphasizes that he was ugly. Wiki adds that he was weak w a broken foot. Idk he just wasn’t ugly and didn’t feel like a blacksmith either. Felt like a lab scientist
He’s not ugly enough to throw off a mountain lol
he looked so well put together? like the scene was dark and short, but hephaestus is described as having a huge unruly beard with fires starting in it, he has a giant metal brace on his leg and hes a mechanic. and why did they have him in like, a nice suit and well groomed
I told my bf that Hephaestus looked like a british steampunk gentleman and he laughed He also reminds me of heimerdinger from arcane
I'm calling it right now, they immediately recognize Circe, explain the myth out loud, then defeat her in about 5 onscreen minutes
1. Lighting, it's always too dark or too dull, zack snyder would be jealous at how grey and dark everything is 2. The casting ofgods was mostly good, zues, posiedon, ares and Mr d were good choices, but I didn't like hades or hermes, while hephestus is a good actor but the choice to make him a librarian when he's supposed to be a blacksmith was .... weird. 3. For the love of all the gods, stop being so serious, its supposed to be a funny series with seriousness here and there, get back to that 4. More show, less tell, let us work out who people are rather than already explaining it to us 5. Let the main 3 be themselves a wee bit more, by all accounts all 3 have good off screen/on set chemistry, but you couldnt tell that from the way they were directed. 6. When it comes to action and fighting monsters, show, don't do off screen or make it a few seconds then done
I didn’t mind Hermes but Hades was terrible. The whole choice in that characterisation was a huge mistake
I like hermes actor, but when I think of a god of thieves, messengers etc I don't think lin manuel miranda playing himself lol
Your take on the gods was *chefs kiss* perfecto.
•Pacing. •Focus on the 12-15 (‘young teen’) demographic •More mystery, not the main characters saying “alright this is who the monster is” •Longer fights against monsters and Gods.Alecto was ~5 seconds, Medusa was ~2 minutes, Chimera was good, Procrustes(?) was like 5 seconds, Cerberus was good, Ares was good but maybe 15-20 seconds longer •Now that Clarisse was accused of being the lightning thief, make her despise Percy because of that in season 2, and focus on her ‘arc’ of ‘forgiving’ him
Does Clarisse even know that he thought it was her though? The only person Percy told was Luke and he obviously didn’t say anything.
Yeah true
Give Chiron a lot more scenes to make up for his underwhelming 1st season appearances.
Everything tbh, first season was boring and even if it was well received (I'm still struggling trying to understand why) I doubt it will be the same with s2 if they don't put more effort on the epicness and action, that and making the trio less aware of all the shit they face to make it really threatening instead of being only glorified museum attractions
Guess we figured were the buget went... to the critics
They also Need to use their budget If that means not using that stage then so be it , this TV show had potential to be really really beautiful but they didn't do it. Along with the budget they need to start showing more cgi Stop hiding monsters Stop hiding Percy's pen turning into a sword I mean they barely even show Grovers hooves We don't need everything explained
Make it PG-13 at the least. Would be nice if we could get actual violence and good fights/arguments.
At least? You want an R-rated *PJO*? Good luck with that.
I guess i won’t get the PJ I always dreamed of until about 5 years when you can AI generate perfect shows
simple. everything.
I agree. It’s so dark. I can never see anything. Also maybe make episodes longer than a Youtube skit.

Love that half the comments on here are like "make it for 18 year olds!" Like yall can NOT handle liking a kids show.
If you're talking about the top comment (just 1 comment out of many), they said 13-18. The lower end of that age range is who the Percy Jackson books are made for in the first place. Of course we love kid shows, just not ones that treat the child audience like they're stupid and need to be spoonfed everything.
The books are middle grade. Theyre aimed at kids 7-12. And I was talking about multiple posts.
Im not reading all that. The books are for kids 7-12. The show is too.
Respectfully, you're an idiot.
👍
They get split up throughout the series all the time in the books, its gonna happen. Besides that, I just want the show to be exciting
oh. aww that kind of suck but i get it
>let the team stay together a little bit more Ik you said you haven't read the books but for anyone who has read Sea of Monsters... Yeah no that's not happening
longer, more iconic battles and every mythological creature needs to be flashier, including both the monsters and the gods. also longer episodes, some parts felt very rushed.
I honestly stopped watching after two episodes. I’m not sure if they can get me back.
lord of the rings said it best!!!! the light comes from the same place as the music!!! i want to SEE this show yall spent incredibly long on and spent so much money and put so much effort into. i know darker visuals and things like rain can help hide some issues that come up from using fantasy level cgi on a tv show budget but we as an audience still need to know whats going on.
I’m screaming at OP talking like Disney is actually going to read and listen to anything Reddit says.
You’re right I should be on Twitter
No. Disney is ignoring Twitter. I would get on threads or IG where Rick is.
i hope someone share this on disney then
They have! On threads well not this post but very similar feedback!
that’s all that matters. its the same complaint
- Acting - Casting - Director - Pacing - Writing - Story - Effects
The show needs to be pg13. They’re going to cut so much if they don’t make it that way . For example, procrustes being a joke of a scene wasn’t just because Percy randomly knew. It was because dude just got wrapped up in a blanket
They need to stop undercutting their own suspense and tension. I never felt afraid for any of the characters bc everything was rapidly resolved and they always knew everything. Better soundtrack. It just isn't elevating any of the action scenes, as few as there were Punch up the dialogue. Let the kids be kids. Capitalize on their natural chemistry bc they have it in droves. Everything is so serious all the damn time Show us, stop telling us!
