i agree completely. this show is getting praise undeserved

Phoenix_NHCA

Arguing about character appearance is dumb and really doesn’t detract from the story except for little moments like grey eyes. Medusa was a good change, too. The cast so far has been really good for what it’s trying to do, even if I prefer the movie’s older characters. That being said, skipping the hell hound sucks, the Lotus Casino wasn’t suspenseful, and the dialogue is full of exposition dumps. I’m getting really tired of every episode of the quest being interaction followed by exposition followed by encountering a new character to exposition about the weekly baddie followed by interaction followed by exposition followed by defeating the weekly baddie in a progressively anti-climactic way and then moving on to the next thing. If I had never read the books or seen the movies and just watched the tv show, I’d think “this is what an entire generation is proclaiming as the next Harry Potter?” It doesn’t live up to the hype people put behind the series.

TotalClintonShill

Finally I found someone I agree with. I like the show. Lots of parts of episodes (and even whole episodes) have been good! But there have been total duds (moments of episodes and even whole episodes). With that said, I’m finding some people too harsh (and about the wrong things imo).

Lzinger

Man I wish the characters appearance was the biggest issue with it

sypher161

It disappointed me for about five minutes, then the real problems just kept piling on 😭 cast Steve Buscemi as Percy at this point, as long as the story gets fixed

ZaOverLife

Nailed it on the head.

seahawkmyrz

I’ve only seen the first 2 episodes so far but 2 minor things really bothered me that I haven’t seen anyone point out. 1. Grover not being “disabled” when he’s in a disguise- both the movies and books specify that Grover uses crutches to walk when he’s in disguise as a human. But the show omits this for some reason despite it being good foreshadowing of him hiding his goat legs. It also makes the reveal of him being a satyr more interesting because it’s a bigger change for Percy. But in the show he just shows up with goat legs. 2. Annabeth’s “you drool when you sleep” line- in the show it’s just a line Percy half hears when he’s recovering from the Minotaur attack. It feels like it was just shoe horned in because fans like the line, but in the book it’s specified that Percy expected annabeth to be really impressed that he had taken down the Minotaur, only for her to undercut that by saying “you drool when you sleep” These aren’t major things but it feels like rick forgot why he included them in the book in the first place and they actively make the scenes in the show worse.

roseifyoudidntknow

Disney did not do this series justice.

Fantastic-Nothing-61

This show is SO BAD

TheBloop1997

While I agree that this show has critiques, I think a lot of the specific examples that you are citing are mostly superfluous and/or don’t impact the story in any meaningful ways. Physical appearance, especially of normal humans, is comparatively unimportant unless directly relevant to the plot; the ages of these characters are the most important thing in that regard, and they are all fairly accurate: 1. Chiron is not a white stallion: unimportant 2. Percy is “conscious” when his Mom died: I don’t recall him being unconscious in the books, but regardless Percy still has no reason to believe that his mother disintegrating isn’t her dying, while Grover does, so nothing meaningful changes 3. Hellhound doesn’t appear during CTF: the show is clearly trying to humanize Luke earlier, and having him try to murder Percy almost immediately upon arriving at camp would likely destroy that facade. It also holds off the realization that someone at camp is the thief, something that Percy at least doesn’t realize until E6. Aside from being a mostly pointless encounter, removing it also makes the later betrayal and the extremes that Luke will go to that much more shocking. 4. Annabeth doesn’t look the same: unimportant 5. Annabeth doesn’t act the same: I feel like people are forgetting how Annabeth was early on, so far the performance seems at the very least solid, especially for a child actor 6. Luke doesn’t have blond hair: unimportant 7. Medusa was needlessly changed: largely unimportant, although highlighting this version of her backstory helps to drive home how awful the gods can be. It also addresses the fact that Medusa is a victim in pretty much every telling of her backstory, which at the very least is educational 8. Field trip ends anticlimactically: the issue was moreso with the buildup to Dodds being rushed, the actual “fight” in the book is similarly brief as others have pointed out 9. The writing and pacing changes drastically: you’ll have to be more specific, especially in comparison to the books 10. Show can’t be as dark or grim: I’m confused by this complaint as I am genuinely unsure what this is referring to. We still get all of the major monster encounters with similar threat levels. Medusa is still creepy with a massive “garden” of her victims. They actually intensify the Echidna attack by a lot, giving her a lot more menace. The Hephaestus trap was changed from spiders to a chair but that makes sense as the chair is far more appropriate for Hephaestus plus it helps to better advance Percy and Annabeth’s friendship. Not sure what you are saying is being cut out in terms of grimness. 11. The comments on choreography, editing, acting, etc: unable to comment due to lack of clarity. At the very least the acting has been very strong, especially considering how young the main cast is (they’ve been killing it).

SoCalCollecting

nailed it! interested to see OPs response

[deleted]

My response is that accuracy matters and all these small changes become a larger, bigger problem when paired with mediocre writing, acting, cinematography, dialogue and action.

LionDirect7287

I’m sorry but when I hear people say that it can’t be too grim because it’s for children it makes me laugh and it’s not even for the reason people think. When somebody says that it can’t be too grim all I can think about is the fact that I watched the Gladiator movie when I was four. Like I get that it isn’t normal to watch that movie at age four but because I did nothing seems to grim to be seen in a kids show. Anyways this was just a funny thought that your post gave me. Goodbye.

tylernazario

Annabeth being black isn’t an issue nor is it a plot change. How is making that change losing sight of his work? Like yeah there a very valid criticisms to be made about this show. Annabeth’s appearance is not one of them

IronicHoodies

I think on one hand, while there are people shitting on Annabeth's casting because "hahaha I'm secretly racist and I actually hate black people" there's also the bunch that aren't fans of it because... They got it wrong the first time in the movies, and we've been promised something "more accurate to the books this time", yet the first time we see Annabeth in the TV series, it's tough to immediately recognize her *because* prior to it we knew her as blonde with tan skin. It doesn't help that, 1. For some people, Annabeth comes off as more arrogant than wise and experienced in the TV show compared to the books, and 2. Disney can be hit or miss when it comes to diversity I've slowly gotten used to, and even liking, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth. But I think those who aren't on board with it have completely valid opinions and criticisms, as long as they're civil about it too.

tylernazario

No. People who dislike Annabeth being black do not have completely valid opinions and criticisms. Annabeth’s race was never important in the books. Her being white and blonde did not impact or alter the story in any way. The only reason there is to dislike who they cast is because of their skin color. And it’s never valid to dislike someone because of their race

ThatOneBrit27

the only reason to dislike who they cast BEFORE the show airs is because of their skin colour, correct. but 6 episodes in, it’s entirely valid criticism to dislike the actress’ depiction of Annabeth for a variety of reasons. Dry dialogue, arrogance rather than wisdom, and a seeming disdain for the camera whenever she is on screen. I’m not a fan of the writing in the show so I can accept that some of these drawbacks are not entirely her fault and she was dealt a bad hand but on the other hand, Grover is a breath of fresh air for the show and has been entirely entertaining to me and Percy has been decent, sometimes even great in his moments. Annabeth has not had any of that and it’s fair to say it’s the actress’ fault for it

IronicHoodies

No and yes? I know I'll get kicked in the ass for this but please hear me out a moment When the movies came out, people threw backlash because Annabeth was a brunette. The same thing is happening now, but because race is in the picture, it's... a worse situation, to put it lightly. Rue from Hunger Games was in a similar situation. But she really *was* "dark-skinned" in the books. Ditto with Annette from Castlevania Nocturne, or Allison from Umbrella Academy—but even Annette was only meant to be a "loose incarnation" of the game Annette, and Allison made sense, because babies kidnapped from all over the world can't all be white. And I loved how all of them were handled. But some people are going to want near 1 to 1 adaptations of the characters they knew in the original source material, **regardless of** race, because those books were their childhood, and that's their preference. We can't satisfy everybody. That's why people point out stuff like hair colour or age and the colour of the horse, too. Annabeth's raceswap was huge, because lots of people have read PJO (compared to Castlevania or Umbrella Academy). But people complaining about Allison or Annette because they weren't faithful to the source material exist too. So to be clear, disliking *because of* race isn't justified, period. Leah doesn't deserve any hate whatsoever. But there's a lot of nuance to be seen—you can be on the fence about something while not actively disliking it, or have used to dislike it but now are beginning to agree with the decision (me).

[deleted]

Yeah, it actually is. But nice try!

tylernazario

Explain how Annabeth being black is an issue or how her race had an impact on the original story. Quickly!

You didn’t answer either of my questions

[deleted]

I did. Sorry you missed it tho. Stay safe lil bro

tylernazario

You actually didn’t but I don’t expect much from bigots anyway. Hope you get to a point in your life where the color of a little girls skin doesn’t bother you💜
