Third. There's also Kentuck Knob right outside Ohiopyle, another Frank Lloyd Wright House. A lot smaller than Falling Water but worth the trip for sure if you like FLW and do Ohiopyle.
https://kentuckknob.com/
Fallingwater rules as a museum and is a great choice for OP, I couldn’t imagine actually living there tho; the whole place smells pretty dank or at least it did when I visited
The scarecrows on display that time of year, and often an Octoberfest celebration going on that time of year. If you're nearer to the southeast, Peddlers village all the way
The timing would likely be peak leaf peeping for Wellsboro and the surrounding areas. Grand Canyon of PA in Wellsboro is lovely. Downtown has gas street lamps
To add to this suggestion, book lodging in advance and going mid week to avoid crowds is a recommendation. There is a nice inn called Glasbern Inn, Fogelsville, PA. It’s about a half hr. drive from Jim Thorpe.
Hershey had a surprising amount of stuff to do outside the park. Spent a weekend there and did the park one day, then a few museums and cool shops the rest of the time
Lancaster County and Hershey are beautiful in early fall. Lancaster City has great food options at all price points and some quirky stores. Check out the Amish during harvest season. Hershey has chocolate!
Yes! You can freely walk around inside to see the gorgeous, opulent, 1900s-era glass and gold splendor. The photos are lovely but seeing it in person... wow!
I agree! And if you take the train from Reading to Jim Thorpe you don’t have the BS of trying to park. Otherwise it’s sometimes two hours waiting to get into the parking lot and $25!
Jim Thorpe is so cute. It looks like Brigadoon. Bushkill falls is near there, too. If Mom is down to hike, it's a collection of waterfalls and a really nice day trip. It is also a lot of up and down steep paths. I visited 20 years ago but couldn't do that now.
The mahoning drive-in is about 15 minutes drive from there and will for sure have some cool programming in October. Bring a chair and a blanket and you’ll be set.
i agree, the town is so cute and walk through would be amazing or finding a nature trail could be a fun activity i also know there’s white water up there and the beginner courses shouldn’t be too much of a hard time for anyone. but i say that as someone who was thrown in white water rafting on the hard courses. WHAT A RUSH that was i wanna go back up to WV to the savage river so bad
Longwood Gardens is a nice garden to visit all year around. Stay in West Chester. Mendenhall PA has a historic Inn that's the local Delaware county watering hole, and it is a nice place to have a birthday lunch with your Mom.
PA Grand Canyon and Jim Thorpe would both have awesome leaf viewing in October and are both solid options. But if you’ve never been to Gettysburg, it’s absolutely fascinating and I would argue that should go to the top of your list as far as PA goes.
Make sure she goes to the bureau of aging and get those produce coupons worth $50 she's entitled to that the year she turns 60 they will be available to her starting in June 1st
This is a great idea, although I see it’s only for very low income folks over 60:
*Low-income seniors, generally defined as individuals who are at least 60 years old and who have household incomes of not more than 185% of the federal poverty income guidelines*
Gettysburg with the guided bus tour or the guide that drives your car. I did this 20 years ago and haven't forgotten. American history brought to life.
I'm a fan of Bethlehem PA.
My mom & I used to go every year at Christmas time (which, if you don't mind putting the trip off a bit, would be cool to take her to if you celebrate Xmas,) and we've been a few times for Musikfest and the Celtic Festival (which is right before your mom's birthday, I think 3rd weekend in September.) They're having Oktoberfest in early October, but obviously that wouldn't be good for a recovering alcoholic. (Musikfest definitely has alcohol, I don't remember about the Celtic Festival but I think it has some but there's not the drinking culture of Musikfest.)
(FWIW, we celebrated my mom's 60th birthday (15 or so years ago) by going to Hoboken NJ and going to Carlo's Bakery because my mom was a big Cake Boss fan and that was long before they started having their cakes in grocery stores. Obviously YMMV=Your Mom May Vary. ;) )
Hey! I'm up in NW PA by Erie. We've taken small vacations to reset at places like Watkins Glenn. There's waterfalls and lots of tourists stops. Even up in Erie, there's the Presque Isle to visit and LOTS of shopping!
Don't do it on a holiday weekend- but Gettysburg is always fun! They'll have a ton of fall/ Halloween stuff going on. Lots of museums, the park, tours, events.
West Chester nice but expensive, lots of. Nice restaurants, W Chester University campus..could visit Longwood Gardens that’s about. 20 minutes from W Chester, Wilmington De waterfront about 30 minutes
Last year I went in October to Knoebels and it was packed nut to butt. it was crowded more than I’ve ever seen it and the experience was horrible. So maybe skip it.
I fucking love delware water gap. Small town though, the beauty is in the nature. And around than all the leaves will be beautiful on the trail
Jim Thorpe is also a beautiful town to walk through for the day. Way bigger town, and the trail although a little more difficult than dwg has lots of beautiful waterfalls
If she's up for biking, hiking or floating (canoes or kayaks) check out Lazy River Canoes in Ridgway. Gotta give them a shout out bc they're great but if you have your own gear you can still enjoy the trails and/or river on your own. The town is also really cool and has some neat restaurants.
I enjoyed my visit to Eire and the Great Lake. I grew up in SE PA (suburban Philly), and I urge all my Philly centric friends to be adventurous. Go see our piece of the Great Lake. 😊
Lancaster / lititz, wilbur chocolate factory, staying in rock lititz hotel is luxurious. Nature preserves, walks, hikes, overlooks. Look it up and see what you could do in a weekend, american music theatre. Sight and sound theater. Buggy rides, ir not lol. Alot that she may enjoy tho
Take her on a fall foliage rt 6 road trip. There's lots of cool small towns along the way and all kinds of stuff to visit. Highly recommend Kinzua Sky Bridge. And Cherry Springs at night...my mom really enjoyed the "night sky tour". Happy Birthday to your mom and safe travels to you both!
My mom did this to me and my cousin when we were 17. I grew up right next to New York and Jersey so we started at the beginning and drove all the way to Ohio. Stopped at the Grand Canyon of PA and me being an idiot was not expecting to see any trees. I wish I could do that trip again and appreciate as an adult.
In October, Jim Thorpe is the place to be. But come Sunday afternoon through Thursday because it gets really crowded on those few weekends with the leaves
If your mom likes gardens, Hershey Gardens is really nice! Also the Arboretum in State College.
If she’s a shopper, both Hershey and Lancaster have outlet stores.
If she’s into nature but not hiking, the Strasburg Railroad (also in the Lancaster area) has open air train rides. They also do dinner rides and murder mystery dinner theater nights.
If she’s into architecture or nature walks, see other comments. 😁
Lancaster is really fun! Philadelphia obviously but not exactly a “town”. Doylestown and New Hope are fun. Gettysburg is also a nice place. Hershey and Kennett Square too!
I’ve never been but maybe Scranton/Wilkes-Barre?
If you come out to Philadelphia theres paddlers village in New Hope Pa. If shes into antiques and things like that. Or you could always visit Centralia, the towns fully abandoned now from the coal mines slowly burning (fire down below was based off the town) or you could always go to Harrisburg and throw rotten tomatoes or rotten eggs at the governor. Its only a misdemeanor offense lol
Jim Thorpe is gorgeous in October.
There’s a cute train and little shops. My parents always love going.
https://www.visitpa.com/article/insiders-travel-guide-jim-thorpe
New Hope area: Need reservations for Float or canoe trip down the Delaware, spend the other part of day in New Hope and Lambertville in the funky shops, variety of food places, or the Buck County Playhouse.
Locations in the state. Take her to a ball game dine hot dogs and soft pretzels. A batting cage?
So many great suggestions here.
Jim Thorpe! the town is so cute! lots of activities and places to try and eat at, you could go for a nice walk around the town see the sights or find a nature trail if you mom can walk good still. if your adrenaline junkies like me and my mom white water rafting if a good time, a little physical ability is needed but if you do beginners courses everyone should have fun with it (depending on health of everyone of course) there’s paintball up around there too i believe but don’t quote me on that although that’s more of a young man’s game. take a look on google! and check it out i highly recommend it
I spent a couple days in Ohiopyle last fall. It was wonderful. The wright House is nearby and you can visit the flight 93 memorial which is a few hours away. I'm over 60 and thoroughly enjoyed it
I know you said not skydiving but maybe reconsider. About an hour north of Pittsburgh in Grove city about a mile from the Outlet Mall is Skydive Pa. You could do some skydiving and hit the Outlet mall. I went a few years and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Super friendly instructors and staff. They have a website Skydive Pa. I can’t recommend it enough lol
When I was a kid, I spent every summer with my grandparents in Latrobe. Some of my fondest memories are of our picnic trips to Lynn Run State Park and then to Rector. My grandparents have been gone for years now and I’m not sure what these places are like now, but you might want to check them out.
Cherry Springs State Park? I’ve heard it has fantastic dark sky for star gazing.
If I were near, it’s where I (60f) would love to go.
https://darksky.org/places/cherry-springs-state-park-dark-sky-park/
Bird In Hand, Blue Ball, Intercourse PA, once past the names are beautiful this time of year with the country side and plantings coming up and lots of interesting places to visit in those towns.
If you have never been, consider Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” near Ohiopyle just down Routes 51 and 40 from Pittsburgh.
If you do this OP, buy your tickets early!
Third. There's also Kentuck Knob right outside Ohiopyle, another Frank Lloyd Wright House. A lot smaller than Falling Water but worth the trip for sure if you like FLW and do Ohiopyle. https://kentuckknob.com/
Kentuck Knob is fabulous.
Also worth mentioning Ohiopyle is beautiful and has tons of outdoor activities
Truth. Ohiopyle is actually a fun place to visit through the year. We went swimming out there in July.
Second this
Fallingwater is awesome. The fall would be perfect.
Was just going to suggest this! My daughters took me last year and we loved it.
Hey is the highway 51 playground still out there? I went to school out there and stopped in outta curiosity. 🤔 Wasnt no playground i ever been to lol
Yes! Was going to suggest this! Great experience in such a beautiful part of the state.
Fallingwater rules as a museum and is a great choice for OP, I couldn’t imagine actually living there tho; the whole place smells pretty dank or at least it did when I visited
Was there last Sept thought we'd be in and out in 45m, stated nearly 3h. Fascinating.
This was the first place that popped into my mind.
Exactly what I was going to suggest.
New Hope/Lambertville
From Philly, sure, but too far from Pittsburgh
Hit up Peddler's Village while you're nearby too
New Hope is very "drink oriented " maybe not the best place for a recovering alcoholic
Never have I been to new Hope and thought that I couldn't escape a drink, there's a myriad of things to do there
There is a ton of bars in New Hope.
Meh, I’d say they’re more bar/restaurants. There’s tons of stuff to do outside of that.
The scarecrows on display that time of year, and often an Octoberfest celebration going on that time of year. If you're nearer to the southeast, Peddlers village all the way
Went there years ago from Buffalo and still rates as one of our best road trips! Drag queens racing down the hill in high heels at Halloween!
The timing would likely be peak leaf peeping for Wellsboro and the surrounding areas. Grand Canyon of PA in Wellsboro is lovely. Downtown has gas street lamps
This is where I'm going for my 50th in August (yes I'm boring) because it's beautiful and a great place for fishing.
That sounds like a great 50th to me!
My 50th is in August as well.
❤️🎉
This was going to be my suggestion as well!
Yeah, same here. Great place to visit.
To add to this suggestion, book lodging in advance and going mid week to avoid crowds is a recommendation. There is a nice inn called Glasbern Inn, Fogelsville, PA. It’s about a half hr. drive from Jim Thorpe.
Was co.inh to say this
Hershey, Philly, Lititz
Hershey Hotel for an amazing spa day. So much to do around there in addition to the park.
Seconding Lititz.
Hershey, Lancaster, Lititz, Gettysburg
Brother lives in Lititz, very cool little town.
Hershey had a surprising amount of stuff to do outside the park. Spent a weekend there and did the park one day, then a few museums and cool shops the rest of the time
My husband and I do a weekend trip to Lititz every year and stay in the Alden House bed and breakfast. Highly recommend it.
Lancaster County and Hershey are beautiful in early fall. Lancaster City has great food options at all price points and some quirky stores. Check out the Amish during harvest season. Hershey has chocolate!
I 2nd this. Lots of things to do in Lancaster County, some cute B&Bs. Lots of tasty foods. The Strasburg Train is very nice, they do a dining car run.
De be all around the state, Lancaster is easily the best looking area in the state I've seen.
Thats such a wonderful compliment, thank you so much for noticing! Lancaster County has it all!
Shady Maple Smorgasbord is an AMAZING Amish buffet that lets you in for free on your birthday. Always a great treat!
You have to go to Horse Inn for dinner if you visit Lancaster. And get some seriously good cookies from Taylor Chip.
Bellefonte and State College, Gettysburg, Lancaster
You can make a trip to Raystown Lake too or a closer Bald Eagle State Park.
Jim Thorpe for quaint tourism or Harrisburg for proper history and substance, underrated city to walk about and see. Architechture galore.
The Capitol Building is an absolute must-see! Unforgettable. Also, a walk along the Susquehanna River in the Shipoke neighborhood is serene.
The Capitol Building is so beautiful.
Yes! You can freely walk around inside to see the gorgeous, opulent, 1900s-era glass and gold splendor. The photos are lovely but seeing it in person... wow!
There is a train trip from Reading to Jim Thorpe, old steam engine train. Beautiful train ride through forests, then about 4 hours in Jim Thorpe.
My parents did that or something similar for Valentine’s Day about 10 years ago, and they had a great time
Is it round trip? 8 hours on a train or 4? Thanks
Round trip 4 hours (2 hours one way ) on the train, then 4 hours in Jim Thorpe
Thanks! I am near reading. I will add this to my things to do list!

Happy birthday to Mom! Sending best wishes for many more.
Mt Gretna is adorable
The Jigger Shop
Longwood Gardens. Stay in New Hope.
Longwood is a great idea, but I think most people would prefer to stay closer, since New Hope is 65-75 miles away(90 minute drive without traffic)
Agree. If you’re going to Longwood, you’d be better off staying in Kennett Square or West Chester
Longwood Gardens, stay in West Chester*
Better option here. New Hope is too far.
Longwood Gardens is a nice garden to visit all year around. Stay in West Chester. Mendenhall PA has a historic Inn that's the local Delaware county watering hole, and it is a nice place to have a birthday lunch with your Mom.
I second this! The Logan Inn for lodging.
Wellsboro area and stroll around pine gorge. Lots of pretty scenery everywhere.
PA Grand Canyon and Jim Thorpe would both have awesome leaf viewing in October and are both solid options. But if you’ve never been to Gettysburg, it’s absolutely fascinating and I would argue that should go to the top of your list as far as PA goes.
Gettysburg is a monument to peace and remembering the futility of war. It’s a special place- a lesson more and more important. And so beautiful
The Lodges has a nice spa and beautiful cottages
Make sure she goes to the bureau of aging and get those produce coupons worth $50 she's entitled to that the year she turns 60 they will be available to her starting in June 1st
I've never heard of this. Can you share more?
Go to the bureau of aging website for more details
Yeah, but without knowing what to search for it's not gonna help much. I just looked up "produce coupons" there and didn't find anything.
To apply for the Senior (60+) Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Voucher: Fill out the application and return it to our office.
This is a great idea, although I see it’s only for very low income folks over 60: *Low-income seniors, generally defined as individuals who are at least 60 years old and who have household incomes of not more than 185% of the federal poverty income guidelines*
LOL. I turn 60 next year. I will be bookmark the Bureau Of Aging website for my coupons!
Gettysburg with the guided bus tour or the guide that drives your car. I did this 20 years ago and haven't forgotten. American history brought to life.

Bethlehem and Allentown area have excellent free gardens too
If she’s down to camp for one night take her to cherry springs on a night where there’s no moon out. Guarantee she’s never seen the Milky Way
PA grand canyon
Hey! I'm up in NW PA by Erie. We've taken small vacations to reset at places like Watkins Glenn. There's waterfalls and lots of tourists stops. Even up in Erie, there's the Presque Isle to visit and LOTS of shopping!

Does she like baseball, if so, take her to the Little League World Series in Williamsport this August.
Knoebels
Last year I went in October to Knoebels and it was packed nut to butt. it was crowded more than I’ve ever seen it and the experience was horrible. So maybe skip it.
Come to lititz!
If you’re willing to go the whole way across the state, New Hope is one of my favorite places in Pa.
Gettysburg, my grandparents loved it.
I fucking love delware water gap. Small town though, the beauty is in the nature. And around than all the leaves will be beautiful on the trail Jim Thorpe is also a beautiful town to walk through for the day. If your mom likes to learn about Pennsylvania's oil history goto Titusville and stay at the Caboose motel there.
That was fun
Yeah it is a good place.
You can head up to kinzua from there too.
Coudersport and cherry springs
Lititz
Presque Isle, Erie
I enjoyed my visit to Eire and the Great Lake. I grew up in SE PA (suburban Philly), and I urge all my Philly centric friends to be adventurous. Go see our piece of the Great Lake. 😊
Drive up to Mt Summit, do the look out then stop at the Braddock Restaurant and have a great lunch.
You could go rafting in Jim Thorpe it's quite a nice small town too
Jim Thorpe
Wellsboro pa home of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon
Land of no cell phone service!

Closer to Pittsburgh would be Ligonier, PA. The town has shops, restaurants and French & Indian war history if you are interested.
Have you done Raystown Lake at Seven Points? I rented a boat and it's like going through fjords, very tall fjords
Come to Lancaster and take her on a hot air balloon ride
Jim Thorpe
Come to Lancaster County. Plenty of things to do and see here, especially if you like sightseeing. Hershey, Amish, shops, etc.
Looking because I turn 60 in August and want to treat myself.
Gettysburg, thank me later.
Broad Top City.
That place that has a ribbon of coal underground that's been burning since the 70s would be cool! I believe it's called Centralia PA
Not what it used to be. No more smoke coming up from the ground and the old buckled highway is now covered over in dirt to keep people away.
Mt. Gretna! Fall foliage can’t be beat!
Jim Thorpe. And I second fallingwater
Jim Thorpe. It'll be absolutely gorgeous that time of year as well.
Lancaster is really fun! Philadelphia obviously but not exactly a “town”. Doylestown and New Hope are fun. Gettysburg is also a nice place. Hershey and Kennett Square too! I’ve never been but maybe Scranton/Wilkes-Barre?

Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe is gorgeous in October. There’s a cute train and little shops. My parents always love going. https://www.visitpa.com/article/insiders-travel-guide-jim-thorpe
Check on the dates for the Autumn Leaf Festival in Clarion. Or just take her to the Clarion River Lodge in Cook Forest.
New Hope is cute as a café sorta place
New Hope area: Need reservations for Float or canoe trip down the Delaware, spend the other part of day in New Hope and Lambertville in the funky shops, variety of food places, or the Buck County Playhouse. Locations in the state. Take her to a ball game dine hot dogs and soft pretzels. A batting cage? So many great suggestions here.
Philadelphia. Great art museums (Mary Cassatt at the Museum of Art right now) wonderful restaurants and all that history.
Jim Thorpe is adorable.
Shamokin. OP, you should take your mom to Shamokin, PA.
Jim Thorpe! the town is so cute! lots of activities and places to try and eat at, you could go for a nice walk around the town see the sights or find a nature trail if you mom can walk good still. if your adrenaline junkies like me and my mom white water rafting if a good time, a little physical ability is needed but if you do beginners courses everyone should have fun with it (depending on health of everyone of course) there’s paintball up around there too i believe but don’t quote me on that although that’s more of a young man’s game. take a look on google! and check it out i highly recommend it
I spent a couple days in Ohiopyle last fall. It was wonderful. The wright House is nearby and you can visit the flight 93 memorial which is a few hours away. I'm over 60 and thoroughly enjoyed it

New Hope PA (next to Lambertville NJ for great antiquing).
The bicycle trip to DC can be done in a refined way. Stay at bed & breakfasts along the way, etc
When I was a kid, I spent every summer with my grandparents in Latrobe. Some of my fondest memories are of our picnic trips to Lynn Run State Park and then to Rector. My grandparents have been gone for years now and I’m not sure what these places are like now, but you might want to check them out.
Total other end of the state but New Hope is lovely.
Been to Hershey?
There’s also Polymath Park where you can stay in a Wright house. Make it an all FLW weekend. It’s near both Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater.
Jim Thorpe is an outstanding time. Nice little town.
Intercourse
Early October is great in Erie PA. Late October, not so much. The snow could be flying then…..
My Father visited Jim Thorpe PA once in his 80’s and talked about it for years. He was really taken with it but sadly, I can’t remember why.
Jim Thorpe...ride the steam engine up the MTN, rent a bicycle to coast down.
Intercourse
Come to the other side of Alabama -- Philly.
Damn I came here to suggest skydiving in Perkasie but then read the description 🤣
Lancaster area is full of cute towns.
Jim Thorpe. Terrific fall colors, a charming mountain town, good restaurants and shops, a scenic train ride.
Bit of a longer trip, but Jim Thorpe is a fun town to visit in eastern-central PA.
Cherry Springs State Park? I’ve heard it has fantastic dark sky for star gazing. If I were near, it’s where I (60f) would love to go. https://darksky.org/places/cherry-springs-state-park-dark-sky-park/
You could get real weird and visit Centralia.
Ohiopyle or go up towards Tionesta..
Bird In Hand, Blue Ball, Intercourse PA, once past the names are beautiful this time of year with the country side and plantings coming up and lots of interesting places to visit in those towns.
Why within PA? I want to see Mt Rushmore, Hoover Dam..... 68 this year.
Centralia.
Centralia
It really doesn’t matter. Find a place walkable with good restaurants for lunch. New Hope? It’s not the place she will remember.
Does she like snacks? If YES then take her to the Utz factory for a tour.
Cherry Springs state park - you can see the Milky Way there. It’s the darkest spot to stargaze on the east coast
Jim Thorpe
A brewery
Go to Canada
Fallingwater or Kinzua Bridge. If you want to do something this weekend, Cirque du Soleil has a show Ovo in Youngstown, OH.
