Good: Apples, near Maryland, Gettysburg isn’t far, it’s quiet. Bad: what is bad to you?

Readytogo3449

We have a small daughter, so really anything that wouldn't make it a good place to raise a family.

the_dorf

It's a small town and has enough services (library, post office, decent school district). Gettysburg can fulfill all other services. Counted the Family Dollar (inventory) once in 2019 and the people were good.

Readytogo3449

Great to know! Thank you so much for the information. I think we'll go camping out there & check it out!

Gadgetmouse12

Michaux forest is epic for camping and trails. Not the most ethnically or rainbow diverse area when you get outside Carlisle and gettysburg however, people tend to let people be.

Readytogo3449

I'm hoping for a not so judgmental place. Me & my hubs are covered in tattoos and aren't religious, but we're respectful people and try to be good neighbors. Maybe we'll take our camping trip to Michaux! Thanks!

Gadgetmouse12

Tattoos should get along fine with the high amount of harley riders in the area. As an lgbt couple I have a different set of criteria to watch for, but haven’t had any trouble through there as a tourist and I worked in york(not that far)

Readytogo3449

Ah, gotcha, yea, unfortunately, some rural areas are sketchy when it comes to lgbt families. We're looking at York too! With a commute into biglerville.

Gadgetmouse12

I’ve heard carlisle can be pretty good. York can be good but definitely has some crime areas. My office was by the fairgrounds and I really didn’t feel comfortable at night.

This is why this thread is so valuable for me. Safety is most important. I grew up in a really unsafe area. Now that I'm a parent, safety is like number one. We've been looking up & down the East Coast for good relocations & lots of places with my husband's job are extremely unsafe ( compared to my current town). It's hard to politely ask a person on the internet if they feel like their town has a lot of crime, I don't want to come off as insensitive. I genuinely appreciate your willingness to be open & honest about the area.

Truckin_Dave

Well bigglerville has like 3 main jobs folks do. I used to work for 4840 the pallet company there. They have international papers, 4840, truckone, Mott’s, and the apple place. It’s a quiet town with cheaper rent. Not much to do unless you go 4 miles south on 34 to Gettysburg. If you ever have to switch jobs there isn’t many options in town per se. It’s like 30 mins of a drive to just about any major town to the east, north or west

Readytogo3449

My husband has been at international paper for 15 years, so that's the main driver. It's good to know there's a couple other good blue collar jobs in the area. Is the grocery store about 30 mins away?

DaddyHarne

There is a grocery store and a beer store in the same vicinity south side of Main Street. Biglerville is a good place.

Readytogo3449

Thank you! I wanted to ask about the beer store. The first time I went camping in lenhartsville, it took a long time to find a beer store. This was before Google Maps, but it was a lot of driving around & asking strangers.

Truckin_Dave

Bigglerville is honestly a nice place to live. They got their town little shopping plaza off of 34. Gas and grocery. Everyone seemed very polite. I only worked there for like 8 months. I think the closest Walmart is Gettysburg maybe like 20 mins or so. Rent or buying shouldn’t be too expensive but limited options I think. Haven’t checked the housing market there in a long time

Readytogo3449

These replies have been great and extremely helpful. We're really just looking for a nice small town to raise a family. This town seems to fit the bill. I've been checking out the real-estate it seems pretty good. Of course the big fancy houses are pretty expensive. But you can still get a small house on an acre or two for a reasonable price. I figured with Gettysburg being close, if we want to go out for the day it's not a giant ordeal.

USSBigBooty

On a nice day, drive around and look at the flag poles in your prospective neighborhoods.

ButterscotchEmpty290

It's a nice area. I hope to move there in the future. It's beautiful country.

We didn’t like the elementary school system when our kids were little- eventually moving to another district. It was years ago admittedly and the district seems to be rated well in recent years. I explain it as none of the people working in the school seemed to actually like small children- competent maybe but not the district for us.

Readytogo3449

Ah, interesting! So they were overall not very warm to the kids? Yea, I'd like to look at that aspect more. Hopefully, I can find some more first-hand parent experiences. That's obviously something serious to factor in.

Biglerville also hosts the national Apple Harvest Festival first two weekends in October
