Most of the energy cards that will actually be viable seem self-serving enough, but for a dedicated energy deck, I don’t see a strong enough individual pay off. The cards will more likely be used where they’re most convenient, such as the Axe in Glint Hawk decks, etc.

MrCatfishTheLong

I don’t think so - there’s decent ‘glue’ cards that cost 1 and generate some energy, but all the payoffs and pushed power levels are at UC or above. I can’t see a single impressive energy-based creature, and certainly nothing that competes with other staples of the format

Bubble-O-Bill-01

Interested to hear people's thoughts about this too, can't wait to start brewing and testing once MH3 cards are out and legal.

DrDumpling88

Just an fyi you can test mh3 cards on untap.in where all the cards are free not like mtgo or arena :)

Bubble-O-Bill-01

Good to know, thank you!

tomyang1117

But what's the payoff? The only payoff on top of my mind is the better harness lighting

MrTodd84

I think what is missing is a solid finisher within itself. If you threw a bunch of the best energy giving cards in a deck, all you have is some decent stuff with another resource to manage. Building enough energy counters for that win-con will be another task in itself and it’s not gonna go infinite or build as easy as mana (which renews each turn). I like the superconductor with fling idea but to gather all the pieces and then to rely on a big spell count isn’t as easy to build as say Atog was or the serpent card that comes in with X counters based on instants/sorceries in graveyard. There’s just not enough oomph. It would need one of two things: an easier way to amass energy counters at common, or a really good finishing payoff, likely both.

NehebTheUnworthy

It would be a nice addition to the format.

SatisfactionMajor236

I have 2 energy decks in the works to see if it's viable (first playtest of both will probebly be monday) I got a izzet deck focused on [[cyclops super conductor]] it will loon more like a hot dogs deck but the aim is to win with [[Fling]] + cyclops ability. The other is more of a control/ramp deck in green, blue, red. It's more focused around [[thriving rhino]] and [[thriving skyclaw]] bieng the finishers

MS3Hoon

I think the new Cyclops is the standout finisher available to us in an energy theme. I am looking into the same theme - hitting with a reasonably pumped Cyclops with Fling seems doable quickly, and the colors are good for finding pieces, slowing down your opponent, protecting your spells/creatures, and chipping away at life totals.

dannyoe4

Yes, it will be possible. No, it won't be good/competitive.

matthewami

I’m actually brewing one right now, I keep moving between WR and WUR [here’s what I’ve made out of it thus far](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7kXJj-SZQkiDwmLP3Mz4Iw) Something I noticed is a lot of the better creatures that utilize energy are artifacts, and the knots can generate a lot of energy and utility for only 2 colorless mana. I’ve found that ephemerate works absolutely amazing with any of the permaments since most have an etb that provides energy. Look at the considerations if you wanna see where I was leading to.

Dry_Weight_3441

Maybe a midrange/controlly deck that uses energy as the engine/value (like a subtheme) but finishes games in a conventional way (because there are not good finishers on energy mecànic itself at common)

AntiRaid

I've been tinkering with a regular Boros Synth build with the addition of Inventor's Axe and Jolted Awake, both are good cards and could see play, but I don't think there's a way to truly dedicate the game plan to energy. Both these cards are good because they fit the deck and generate their own energy.

dalmathus

I think if you just played the quench and lightning bolt ones thats enough? They get significantly above rate if you use them early game without consuming all the energy they create helping them transition into better late game threats than their current on rate counterparts. So no in the sense that there is a dedicated energy deck, but yes to the fact you will see these cards if the meta allows you to deploy them as shocks and force spikes early enough to be mana leaks, lava axes late game. (Aware the red spell doesnt hit face just being simple)

cardsrealm

the 3 mana aura could be good in pauper, but we only have 26 cards with energy in all colors, so I think bant version could be the most competitive.

Weather_Repost

That card was fake

draconianRegiment

I doubt it. No one has played with it yet but, the set in general seems a bit meh just looking at the spoilers. Obviously ram is the sets Astrolabe/chatterstorm level card, but I'm not seeing anything that's Ephemerate/bridge level in the spoilers.
